‘Wonder Woman’ Repeats Box Office Victory, Tom Cruise’s ‘The Mummy’ Misfires

LOS ANGELES - Different weekend, similar story: “Wonder Woman” is box office royalty. The Warner Bros. and DC Comics standalone will have earned $57.2 million from 4,165 theaters by the end of its second weekend, putting it solidly in first place. That’s only a 45% drop from its opening weekend, giving the film an estimated $205 million domestically in two weekends. The Gal Gadot-starrer will also make more during its second frame than did both “Suicide Squad” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” despite those films having larger opening weekends than “Wonder Woman” ($133.7 million for “Suicide Squad” and $166 million for “Batman v Superman”). Unlike those two films, Patty Jenkins’ has critical support -- a current 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Universal’s “The Mummy,” meanwhile is counting on a strong overseas total to make up for less impressive domestic earnings. As of Sunday morning, the film is eyeing $32.2 million from 4,035 locations. That’s a slow start for the film intended to launch an extended universe of monsterrelated titles. Overseas it looks to fare better with $141.8 million, lifting its anticipated global take to $174 million. “We would love to see more gross domestically,” said Nick Carpou, Universal’s president of domestic distribution, who asserted that “a lot of the attention that ‘The Mummy’ garnered here, aggregated to the international total.” Carpou cited the 75-foot-tall sarcophagus unveiled at the intersection of Hollywood and Highland, and the movie’s VR experience as potential buzz generators. Alex Kurtzman directed “The Mummy,” a revival of the franchise spawned by Universal’s 1932 original and re-popularized by Stephen Sommers’ 1999 fright-fest starring Brendan Fraser, and the three other Mummy films that followed. In the 2017 update, Cruise plays a freelance treasure hunter who resurrects a princess (Sofia Boutella). Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, and Russell Crowe are also in the mix. “The Mummy” was announced as the kick-off to a “Dark Universe” of monster movies. 2014’s “Dracula Untold,” it turns out, is not canon. The studio that was built on classics including “Dracula,” “The Wolf Man,” and “Frankenstein” has already slated a “Bride of Frankenstein” movie for 2019 with half a dozen or so others in the works. LOS ANGELES - Katy Perry is ready to bury the hatchet on her long-running feud with pop rival Taylor Swift, calling her a “fantastic songwriter” and saying she thinks both can be examples of strong women in the music industry.

But Swift, 27, had yet to respond to the olive branch on Sunday and end the bad blood between two of pop music’s biggest female singers. “I am ready to let it go,” Perry said in a global podcast on Saturday to promote her new album “Witness.” “I forgive her (Swift) and I’m sorry for anything I ever did, and I hope the same from her. I love her, and I want the best for her. And I think she’s a fantastic songwriter,” Perry, 32, added.

The feud, which started as a dispute over back up dancers, has dominated the personal and professional lives of the two singers for more than three years and played out in their songs. Swift on Friday released her back catalog to streaming services, after eschewing most such platforms for three years, on the same day that Perry released her new album “Witness” in what was widely seen as a bid to steal Perry’s thunder. Swift’s 2014 single “Bad Blood” was believed to be directed at Perry.

Perry described her new single, “Swish Swish,” released last month, as “a great anthem for people to use whenever somebody’s trying to hold you down or bully you.” In her Saturday podcast, Perry said she hoped both she and Swift “can be representatives of strong women that come together despite their differences.” “I just really truly want to come together in a place of love and forgiveness and understanding and compassion,” Perry said. Swift, who has not released an album since 2014’s best-selling “1989” and has adopted a low public profile in recent months, stayed silent on her social media accounts at the weekend. (rtr)

Macron’s likely landslide lifts markets, low turnout clouds celebration

PARIS - A first-round parliamentary election result promising President Emmanuel Macron a crushing majority in parliament lifted investor sentiment on Monday though the lowest voter turnout in modern history clouded celebration. Pollsters said Macron was on course to win as much as three quarters of National Assembly seats in the June 18 second round after 28 per cent of those who voted in Sunday’s first round chose his Republic on the Move (LREM) party. That would be France’s biggest majority in decades, and effectively leaves only the powerful trade union movement as a potential obstacle to the pro-business reforms ex-banker Macron has promised to introduce in a bid to boost growth and jobs. French borrowing costs fell on Monday, tightening the gap over benchmark Germany. France’s 10-year government bond yield fell 3 basis points to 0.62 percent, outperforming other higher-rated euro zone peers. The gap over benchmark German Bund yields tightened to around 36 basis points from around 39 bps late on Friday. But fewer than half of the

47 million voters turned out in the first round - the lowest level by far in a legislative election in the 60year-old fifth Republic. Macron was a political unknown three years ago and is heading a startup party, but as the scale of his likely victory emerged on Sunday, his opponents saw a danger to democracy. Just a month after the 39-year-old won a bitter and drawn-out battle for the presidency, some questioned whether he had a mandate to pursue a pro-business reform agenda. The spokesman for Macron’s government recognised the challenge that lies ahead. “We have to restore trust,” said Christophe Castaner, who is also minister for parliamentary relations, on Monday. “It is the government’s responsibility, that of the president, that of the prime minister, to restore trust in the election process,” he told France 2 Television “We don’t want a majority to have an easy time of

Arrangement of slums hampered by land ownership

DENPASAR —The central government’s Ministry of Public Works and People’s Housing (PUPR)’s program as set forth in the national mid-term development plan (RPJMN) 2015-2019, mandates that the universal access target be reached by 2019. The target is to achievement 100 percent access to drinking water, 0 percent slums, and 100 percent access to proper sanitation. One of the targets that has become difficult to achieve in Denpasar is the elimination of slums as certain slums in this culturally-oriented city are on contracted or private land. Chairman of the Special Committee XII of the Denpasar House of Representatives, I Wayan Suadi Putra, when contacted on Sunday (Jun 11) admitted that his was an issue. The special committee which is currently working on a regional bylaw draft for the Prevention and Quality Improvement of Slum House and Slums also recognized that there are no regulations that allow for either the regional or central budget to be used for the arrangement of individual or contracted slum settlements. Suadi Putra said that in Sidakarya there is a large contracted land area where dozens of semi-permanent houses have been built and turned into slums. Village funds cannot be used to arrange the area. “The obstacle that we face in making improvements to the slums here lies in the fact that the settlement is built on contracted land” he said. Similar claims we made by the head of the Bali Working Unit for Slums, Ketut Suastika. He said that many slums in Denpasar are on private land. His division had identified a slum area in Monang-Maning, but up in investigation it was found to be private property. The same is true in Jematang on Badung Riverbanks, where many slums built up with semi-permanent houses are on contracted land. Suadi Putra added that the typology of slums in Denpasar is different from other regions, such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Semarang and other big cities. In Denpasar, the slums are on private land. None of the slums in Denpasar are found on government land. “It is difficult for us to manage. We need to find a legal basis for entering privately owned land” explained Putra. According to the Denpasar Mayoral Decree No. 88.45 / 509 / HK / 2012, slums in Denpasar cover some 18 hectares. Within three years, this number increased to 167 hectares as a result of verification and identification by the central and provincial governments. Of the 167 hectares, most slums are in North Denpasar covering approximately 54 hectares with another 50 hectares in South Denpasar, 35 hectares in West Denpasar and 27 hectares in East Denpasar. Fuel consumption increases up to 35 percent

Facing Ramadhan and Lebaran 1438 H, Marketing Operation of Pertamina for Region V (MOR V) takes preparatory measures to anticipate the increasing of fuel consumption, LPG, and Aviation fuel in East Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara region. Marketing Branch Manager of Pertamina for Bali and NTB Region, I Ketut Permadi Aryakuumara, said that Pertamina is ready to guarantee the availability of fuel, LPG, and aviation fuel in order to meet the needs of community estimated to increase during the moment of Lebaran this time. On that account, it established a taskforce centered at Pertamina’s office for Bali and NTB Region at Jalan Sugianyar 10. The taskforce is also available in TBBM (fuel terminal) at Pesanggaran, Manggis, DPPU Ngurah Rai and fuel terminal in NTB. The taskforce commenced its duty on June 10 through July 11. Every day, there are two personnel on duty from the morning to night as well as in the depots. “Possibly, depots will also be opened longer than usual hours,” he added. The main duties of the taskforce is to monitor and ensure that all the distribution of fuel, LPG and aviation fuel runs smoothly and there are no significant obstacles encountered in the field. “In principle, we in

NASA experiment to color the skies over the U.S. East Coast

A high-flying science experiment may color the skies above the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast with bluish green and red clouds on Sunday evening, as NASA seeks to learn more about charged particles at the top of Earth’s atmosphere. A small rocket carrying 10 canisters of barium and other chemicals is due to lift off from Wallops Island, Virginia between 9:04 and 9:19 p.m. EDT. About five minutes after launch the canisters, which are about the

size of soda cans, will release blue-green and red vapors that will gather into artificial clouds potentially visible from New York to North Carolina. The luminescent colors are due to sunlight interacting with the

chemicals barium, strontium and cupric-oxide, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration said on its website. Although the flight will last about eight minutes, the colorful clouds could linger for 20 minutes, depend-

ing on atmospheric conditions. NASA ground stations at Wallops Island and Duck, N.C., will track the clouds so scientists can learn more Earth’s ionosphere, a layer at the top of the atmosphere of charged particles that shoot out into space, creating effects including auroral displays over the planet’s polar regions. Scientists want to learn more about how the ionosphere interacts with

other layers of the atmosphere. “The ionosphere is both shaped by waves from the atmosphere below and uniquely responsive to the changing conditions in space,” NASA said. Sunday’s launch will be delayed if skies are not clear over at least one of the tracking sites, NASA said. The launch could be rescheduled for any time between this week and June 18. (rtr)

Abandoned for years

Pool in Kubu utilized for fishing pond BANGLI — The existence of swimming pool in the Kubu educational center, Bangli, denoting an asset belonging to the government of Bangli, is still left dormant until now. A number of residents take advantage of the pool established by the government with state budget funds of the ministry of education as a fishing pond. As seen on Sunday afternoon (Jun 11), in the area there are two large enough swimming pools. Other than the swimming pool, there are also two buildings functioned as a dressing room and toilet as well as two gazebos located in the south and north side of the pool. Unfortunately, though condition of swimming pools and gazebos is quite sturdy and good, the pool area looks very shabby and unkempt. Pool water that should be clear looks dirty and brown. Wild grass and shrubs are seen to be allowed to grow up around the pool and even clears away into the building in the southern part of the pool. Besides, the entrance gates always padlocked all this time has looked damaged and broken so that it is easily entered by people. From recent observation, a number of children looked busy fishing in the pond. One of them admitted that the pool is used as a fishing spot because it contains many tilapias. Fingerlings were deliberately stocked by children last month. Related to that condition, a member of Commission III of the Bangli House of Representatives, Made Sudiasa, admitted to deeply regret because the pool asset is still left dormant. He also questioned about the commitment of Bangli government, in this case the education agency, to manage the asset. Sudiasa explained that in order that the swimming pool can be utilized well by the community, his commission already held a meeting with the education agency last year. In the meeting, the education agency once stated that it would soon manage the pool. “However, until now there has been no follow-up,” he said. Sudiasa claimed not to know exactly about the constraint faced by the education agency in managing the pool. To that end, his commission is going to invite the education agency again in a special meeting to discuss about the management of the swimming pool. “Later on, we will ask the commitment of the education agency related to the pool management plan. I do not know what problem faced so far that the swimming pool has not been properly managed, whether it is related to budget or others,” he said. This politician from Undisan village, Tembuku, really hoped that the pool whose management has been handed over by central government to district government can be immediately managed and functioned properly. Climate change is invisible Among industrialized democracies, the U.S. has long been an outlier on climate change, hosting a higher proportion of climate change deniers. No one would say, however, that America is a nation of cave

dwellers, who suspect science and eschew technology in favor of some bare-bones premodern existence. I would argue there is some hypocrisy afoot. Millions of Americans who happily doubt the scientific consensus behind climate change then avail themselves of the fruits of science, which are, one might argue, worthy of suspicion or doubt. Many people happily gamble with pharmaceuticals, for example, which may offer the most trivial of benefits, while they disregard or ignore alarming side effects. If a person’s life is on the line, he or she will eagerly accept and experiment with the strangest theory or cure, even if it offers only

modest success. But these same people may not as easily believe the facts on climate change. Why are so many unwilling to make sacrifices for the climate – even on the chance that human geography and life on Earth will be profoundly changed? Many say that selfishness is at fault. We are simply unwilling to make the requisite sacrifices that climate change action implies, such as curtailing individual energy use. But I suspect there is something else also going on. Climate is a special object of knowledge – unlike any other. It is always changing; it is immense, elusive and in its most accessible

form to all of us – the weather – subjective and variable. Climate change is a form of pollution that is tricky to rally around, because it is impossible to pinpoint or identify neatly and succinctly. What’s more, climate seems variable among people’s perception; what is warm to me may be cool to you. Other forms of pollution or environmental degradation have proven easier calls to action, because they had very visible, tangible implications. Consider, for example, the Cuyahoga River fire in 1969 – when, because of abysmal water pollution, this river in Cleveland literally caught on fire – and galvanized action that helped create the Clean Water Act. BNNP raids two nightspots in two districts DENPASAR - After ransacking Denpasar and Badung, the provincial national narcotic agency (BNNP) Bali this time combed nightspots in Buleleng and Negara on Friday (Jun 9) and Saturday (Jun 10). Officers searched nine nightspots and conducted urine tests to 78 lady companions. The result indicated that one is positive to have consumed ecstasy. Furthermore, the lady companions were directed to the assessment at the BNNP Bali office on Jalan Kamboja, East Denpasar. Dancers hack fire without having burn injuries

BANGLI - Sanghyang Jaran dance is one of Balinese dances remaining to be preserved by the community up to these days. The dance belonging to sacred category has its own uniqueness that is not owned by other dances. In the performance, the dancers having been possessed by the spirit of jaran (horse) will jog around and step on the piles of embers with bare feet. Not long ago, Sanghyang Jaran Dance was presented by Sanghyang Geni Astu art troupe from Siladan hamlet, Tamanbali, in front of the Captain Mudita Monument, in a series of the 813th anniversary of Bangli. The Sanghyang Jaran dance performance featuring the Sunda Upasunda storyline was able to draw the attention of hundreds of audience. The audience was amazed by the attraction of the dancers who did not suffer any burns despite licking hot iron with their tongue and stepping on embers of fire with bare feet. As the name implies, the two dancers are riding a horse made from coconut leaves. When dancing, they are accompanied with a sacred song and gamelan of Sanghyang Jaran. Chief of the Sanghyang Geni Astu art troupe, Ida Bagus Oka Munadi, when met on the sidelines of the performance revealed that Sanghyang Jaran dance is one of several types of Sanghyang dance in Bali. Based on its history, Sanghyang Jaran dance first existed and developed in Nusa Penida, Klungkung. Over time, Sanghyang Jaran dance expanded widely to other areas and districts in Bali. Sanghyang Jaran dance is admitted to have a uniqueness compared to other dances. During the staging, the dancers will experience trance after the ritual of calling on the spirits. Unconsciously, the dancers will walk around and hit the piles of embers to scatter. “This dance begins with a calling on spirits. After the spirits coming into the body of the dancers, they will dance on fire,” he explained. (kmb40)

One farmer from Bayunggede village, Kintamani named Wayan Widya, said on Sunday (Jun 11) that with the arrival of the dry season, farmers are facing a severe lack of water for their crops. He and others like him are forced to buy large amounts of water for their the plants in their fields. “We face a water crisis every

During the rainy season, there is enough rainfall for our fields, but when the rains stop we have to buy water from the tank trucks” said Widya, who added that on average he has to buy water four times each dry season. This represents a substantial investment as each time he must shell out IDR 180,000 (per

tank load). “Farming requires a substantial amount of water. Households needs are not nearly as much”, he said. Widya explained that there is in fact a spring in his village but it is located quite a distance from the agricultural fields. “Besides we cannot rely on water form the spring for farming because, during the dry season the amount of water being discharged from the spring is not sufficient. BUSINESS Fear of losing blueberry growers as prices drop, crop soars

PORTLAND — Members of Maine’s agriculture industry and state government fear the possibility of losing blueberry growers due to a depression in prices that has made growing the beloved crop a less reliable way to make a living. Wild blueberries are a Maine tradition on par with lobsters and lighthouses, but prices to farmers have plunged from nearly a dollar a pound (0.45 kilogram) in 2011 to around 25 to 30 cents per pound (0.45 kilogram) last year. The number of farmers and acreages is holding steady, but other measures show a decline in effort on farms, state officials said. For example, bees are imported to Maine to pollinate blueberry fields, and the number of beehives coming into the state declined by about 20 percent from 2015 to 2016, said David Yarborough, a horticulture professor at the University of Maine. Industry members said they are likely looking at another year of low prices, and some farmers are using less of their fields in anticipation of a tough summer. “These are challenging times for the blueberry industry,” said Homer Woodward, vice president of Jasper Wyman & Son, one of the Maine blueberry industry’s major players. “Everyone is trying to rethink their farm management plan.” Gov. Paul LePage, a Republican, has submitted a state budget proposal that would use $2.5 million in state money to market agricultural products such as blueberries. He and others have said the state needs to find new buyers for the blueberries to try to spur demand and

buoy prices. State officials say wild blueberry growers in Washington and Hancock counties, the heart of blueberry country, are seeing annual losses of $70 million. One of the reasons for the drop in prices and profits is a multi-year boom in harvest that has led to surplus. The U.S. Department of Agriculture stepped in last year and allotted up to $13 million to buy surplus Maine blueberries and help stabilize prices. But excess supply remains. Another problem is that Canada also produces wild blueberries and it’s difficult for Maine companies to compete with the country economically because of the weak Canadian dollar. Wild blueberries are not as common in stores as the fatter cultivated blueberries, but fans of the fruit tout its unique flavor profile and higher level of antioxidants. About 99 percent of the crop is frozen, and it is widely used as a food ingredient, such as in smoothies. Canada and Maine, the U.S.’s sole significant

wild blueberry state, have both churned out high levels of the crop in recent years, Yarborough said. The two jurisdictions produced 400 million pounds (181.44 million kilograms) of wild blueberries last year, Yarborough said. The norm is around 250 million pounds (113.4 million kilograms), he said. Regardless of the size of this summer’s crop, prices are unlikely to surge back to higher levels quickly, Yarborough added. “This particular situation isn’t going to resolve itself in a year or two, it might take longer,” he said. The drop in prices to farmers hasn’t trickled down to retail customers yet, except in the form of occasional sales and coupons, Woodward said. He said growers and processors are hoping the state’s push to more aggressively market the blueberries will attract new interest outside the state. SHANGHAI - China and Hong Kong stocks started the week on a bearish note, as tech plays in both markets tracked the sell-off in U.S. counterparts, with sentiment also hurt by the prospect of renewed China slowdown in the second half amid tighter credit. China’s blue-chip CSI300 index fared better than small caps, slipping just 0.1 percent to 3,573.39 points by the lunch break. The Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.5 percent, to 3,144.30 points. In Hong Kong, both the Hang Seng index and the Hong Kong China Enterprises Index lost more than 1 percent, to 25,712.55 points and 10,480.33 points, respectively. Both China and Hong Kong-listed tech shares dropped sharply, following a sell-off on Friday in technology stocks on Wall Street that was triggered by concerns about Apple’s new iPhones and

a cautious Goldman Sachs report about the sector. China’s tech-heavy growth board ChiNext lost nearly 1 percent, while the CSI TMT Index fell 1.1 percent, both underperforming the broader market. Selling was more intensive in Hong Kong, where stocks are more vulnerable to Wall Street fluctuations. An index tracking IT shares tumbled 2.6 percent, led by Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings Ltd. Elsewhere, investors dumped cyclical stocks amid rising concern that China’s economy would suffer from an expected credit tightening in the second half. Quake rattles Indonesia’s capital, but no damage apparent JAKARTA — A strong earthquake rocked western parts of Indonesia’s main island early Monday, causing panic but no immediate reports of damages or casualties. The National Disaster Management Agency said the earthquake shook wide parts of western Java island including the capital, Jakarta. It said residents in some cities ran out of houses in panic. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-5.6 quake was centered in the Indian Ocean, about 97 kilometers (60 miles) south-southwest of the West Java town of Cibungur with a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the quake was a stronger magnitude-6.3 but had no potential to cause a tsunami. Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago, is prone to the seismic upheaval and tsunamis due to its location on major geological faults known as the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” In 2004, an extremely powerful Indian Ocean quake set off a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in a dozen countries, most of them in Indonesia’s Aceh province.(ap)

PARIS - Rafa Nadal says winning a French Open-Wimbledon double for the third time in his career will be “complicated” but is highly motivated to have a go as he prepares for the grasscourt season. Macedonia poured their energy into chasing another goal but it never came. The win means Spain remain top of Group G on goal difference ahead of Italy, who comfortably beat Liechtenstein 5-0 in Udine. “We knew it was going to be a complicated game,” defender Sergio Ramos told Spanish broadcaster TVE. “The aim was to get the three points and we knew it was going to be difficult.” Spain somehow failed to convert a huge amount of possession into goals, despite coming in behind the Macedonian defence seemingly at will in the first half. On the few occasions they lost the ball, the Spaniards won it back quickly and resumed their patient probing of the Macedonian defence but too often the final ball let them down. Defending deep for much of the game, the Macedonians made a few forays forward on the counter-attack but they rarely managed to trouble David De Gea until Ristovski’s frenetic charge from the halfway line ended with him firing into the top right corner.
