Singer Bryan Adams cancels Mississippi show to protest same-sex law

MISSISSIPPI - Canadian singer Bryan Adams has canceled a show in Mississippi to protest a new state law that will let people with religious objections deny services to same-sex couples, the second major concert scrapped in the U.S. South over discrimination concerns. On Friday, rock star Bruce Springsteen called off a weekend concert in North Carolina to show his opposition to a new law there barring transgender people from choosing bathrooms consistent with their gender identity. The cancellations come as U.S. states consider legislation seen as restricting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. Supporters of the measures say they are needed to keep women and children safe in restrooms and to protect religious freedom after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year legalized same-sex marriage.

Adams, who was set to perform on Thursday at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, called the state’s measure “extremely discriminatory.” “I cannot in good conscience perform in a state where certain people are being denied their civil rights due to their sexual orientation,” Adams wrote on his website. The law signed in Mississippi last week allows people with religious objections to deny wedding services to same-sex couples and permits employers to cite religion in determining workplace policies on dress code, grooming and bathroom

and locker access. Ninety-five Mississippi writers, including best-selling author John Grisham, signed a letter released on Monday calling for a repeal of the law before it takes effect in July. “There have always been people here battling injustice,” the letter said. “That’s the version of Mississippi we believe in, and that’s the Mississippi we won’t stop fighting for.” In North Carolina, several hundred people rallied in Raleigh on Monday in support of that state’s law, the first in the nation to require transgender people to choose bathrooms and locker rooms that match the gender on their birth certificate. LOS ANGELES - The cast of “Game of Thrones” played down rumours fan-favourite Jon Snow would live on in the hit fantasy series at the season six premiere on Sunday, insisting the heroic character was dead. Stars Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) walked the carpet at Los Angeles’ TCL Chinese Theatre but Kit Harrington, who plays Snow, was a notable no-show. Snow appeared to be killed off at the end of season five of the popular drama based on novels by George R.R. Martin but HBO sent fans into a frenzy last year when it tweeted a season six teaser poster with a shot of his bloody face. “Listen, my only reply is the man’s had about 25 knives in his chest - how much steel does he need to have in his body to be confirmed dead? He’s dead, dead as a doornail,” Liam Cunningham, who plays Davos Seaworth, told Reuters. “It’s so sad. He’s gone, gone ... Such a shame. Such a nice young man,” added Iwan Rheon, who plays Ramsay Bolton. The fifth season finale, which saw Snow stabbed repeatedly and appearing to bleed to death, drew the show’s largest U.S. audience with some 8.1 million viewers, according to reports. Japan prepares for release of tritium from Fukushima plant

TOKYO — To dump or not to dump a little-discussed substance is the question brewing in Japan as it grapples with the aftermath of the nuclear catastrophe in Fukushima five years ago. The substance is tritium. The radioactive material is nearly impossible to remove from the huge quantities of water used to cool melted-down reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, which was wrecked by the massive tsunami in northeastern Japan in March 2011. The water is still accumulating since 300 tons are needed every day to keep the reactors chilled. Some is leaking into the ocean. Huge tanks lined up around the plant, at last count 1,000 of them, each hold hundreds of tons of water that have been cleansed of radioactive cesium and strontium but not of tritium. Ridding water of tritium has been carried out in laboratories. But it’s an effort that would be extremely costly at the scale required for the Fukushima plant, which sits on the Pacific coast. Many scientists argue it isn’t worth it and say the risks of dumping the tritium-laced water into the sea are minimal. Their calls to simply release the water into the Pacific Ocean are alarming many in Japan and

elsewhere. Rosa Yang, a nuclear expert at the Electric Power Research Institute, based in Palo Alto, California, who advises Japan on decommissioning reactors, believes the public angst is uncalled for. She says a Japanese government official should simply get up in public and drink water from one of the tanks to convince people it’s safe. But the line between safe and unsafe radiation is murky, and children are more susceptible to radiation-linked illness. Tritium goes directly into soft tissues and organs of the human body, potentially increasing the risks of cancer and other sicknesses. “Any exposure to tritium radiation could pose some health risk. This risk increases with prolonged exposure, and health risks include increased occurrence of cancer,” said Robert Daguillard, a spokesman for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The agency is trying to minimize the tritium from U.S. nuclear

facilities that escapes into drinking water. Right after the March 2011 disaster, many in Japan panicked, some even moving overseas although they lived hundreds of miles (kilometers) away from the Fukushima no-go zone. By now, concern has settled to the extent that some worry the lessons from the disaster are being forgotten. Tritium may be the least of Japan’s worries. Much hazardous work remains to keep the plant stabilized, and new technology is needed for decommissioning the plant’s reactors and containing massive radioactive contamination. The ranks of Japan’s anti-nuclear activists have been growing since the March 2011 accident, and many oppose releasing water with tritium into the sea. They argue that even if tritium’s radiation is weaker than strontium or cesium, it should be removed, and that good methods should be devised to do that. Japan’s fisheries organization has repeatedly expressed concerns over the issue. News of a release of the water could devastate local fisheries just as communities in northeastern Japan struggle to recover from the 2011 disasters. (ap)

SAN FRANCISCO — The robots are coming — to help run your life or sell you stuff — at an online texting service near you. In coming months, users of Facebook’s Messenger app, Microsoft’s Skype and Canada’s Kik can expect to find new automated assistants offering information and services at a variety of businesses. These messaging “chatbots” are basically software that can conduct human-like conversation and do simple jobs once reserved for people. Google and other companies are reportedly working on similar ideas. In Asia, software butlers are already part of the landscape. When Washington, D.C., attorney Samantha Guo visited China recently, the 32-year-old said she was amazed at how extensively her friends used bots and similar technology on the texting service WeChat to pay for meals, order movie tickets and even send each other gifts. “It was mind-blowing,” Guo said. U.S. services lag way behind, she added. Online messaging has become routine for most people, offering more immediacy than email or voice calls, said Michael Wolf, a media and technology consultant. Messaging services are now growing faster than traditional online social platforms such as Facebook or Twitter, according to research by Wolf’s firm, Activate. And experts say messaging bots can handle a wider range of tasks than apps offered by retailers and other consumer businesses. In part, that’s because bots can recognize a variety of spoken or typed phrases, where apps force users to choose from options on a drop-down menu. Reaching a chatbot can be as simple as clicking a link in an online ad or scanning a boxy bar code with a smartphone camera. A specialpurpose app requires a download and often a new account sign-up. “Bots are the new apps,” Microsoft

CEO Satya Nadella said last month. Microsoft has just created new programming tools for businesses to build bots that will interact with customers on Skype, the Microsoft-owned Internet voice, video and messaging service. Facebook is widely expected to unveil similar tools for its Messenger chat service at the company’s annual software conference starting Tuesday. It’s already partnered with a few online retailers and transportation companies so consumers can use Messenger to check the status of a clothing purchase from online retailer Zulily, order car service from Uber or get a boarding pass from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. At those services, automated chatbots handle some interactions, with supervision from human operators. Similarly, Facebook has been testing a digital assistant called “M’’ — sort of like Apple’s Siri or Microsoft’s Cortana — that can answer questions or perform tasks like ordering flowers in response to commands on Messenger. It uses a combination of artificial intelligence and input from human overseers. Another messaging service, Kik, which is popular among U.S. teenagers, opened a new “bot shop” last week. Kik users can talk to bots that will answer questions about the weather, show funny videos or help with online shopping. Slack, a messaging service used by businesses, has partnered with Taco Bell to introduce a “Taco Bot” that helps Slack users order ahead for meals at a local outlet. In Asia, many smartphone owners are used to playing games and buying items through messaging services like WeChat, which claims 700 million active users. One in five WeChat users has added bank or credit card information so that person can check balances, pay bills or send money to friends, according to the Andreesen Horowitz venture capital firm. The waterfalls located under the Putung hills should be well organized and promoted as a tourist attraction considering the snakefruit agrotourism in the area is underdeveloped. A legislator of the Karangasem House of Representatives, Wayan Suparta, delivered the matter on Sunday (Apr. 10) in Karangasem. He stated the road to the location is pretty good and has been paved. He said the waterfalls are quite large and matchless. Uniquely, there are two waterfalls, one runs from the north while another from the south. When getting to the quite large waterfall, the pathway remains pristine with views of the cliffs and verdant hills. He said that all this time the residents at his village used it as a place of invoking holy water for ritual. Besides, local residents also believe that the waterfall is a good place for purificatory rite or malukat after suffering disease or other distress. There are also people invoking holy water or doing purificatory rite for

recovery. All this time, only the residents of local village make a visit to the waterfalls. It happens because the waterfalls are not widely known yet, while the location is also quite far or it will take people about one hour. However, added this former headman of East Duda, it is great for trekking path and when arriving at the location it can be resumed with a holy bath. He added the trekking attraction to the waterfall is potential to be developed. AMLAPURA - Lately, the price of rambutan in Karangsokong Subagan has gone way down with fruit on the stalk goig for IDR 4,000 per kg and destalked fruit going for just IDR 2,000 per kg. Housewife Kadek Maryati said that she brought her rambutan at Karangsokong Market for IDR 2,000 per kg. In traditional village markets like the one in Culik village, good waulity rambutan are being sold for IDR 4,000 per kg. “Rambutan is abundant because it is the harvest season in Karangasem which makes the price go way down”, said Nengah Balik, a rambutan grower in Karangasem. Meanwhile the price of sugar apples is more of a relief for famers, with prices at IDR 2,000 apiece because although it is also harvest season for this fruit, there are simply not very many sugar apples available and school children love them as witnesses in the cafeteria of SDN 2 Tulamben elementary school in Kelod hamlet, Tulamben. Iceland finance minister says won’t resign over Panama Papers leaks

LONDON - Iceland’s Finance Minister Bjarni Benediktsson said on Tuesday he would not resign over the Panama Papers leaks, which showed he was once had a stake in an offshore investment firm in the Seychelles. Asked by reporters in London whether he would quit, Benediktsson answered: “No”. The statement came a week after Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson resigned as prime minister over the leaked documents which showed his wife owned an offshore company that held debt from failed Icelandic banks. The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which saw the leaked papers from Panamanian lawyers Mossack Fonseca, said they showed Benediktsson and two Icelandic businessmen had power of attorney over a shell company called Falson & Co. created in 2005 in the Seychelles. The Consortium reported that Benediktsson had confirmed he owned a third of the company and had said it was set up for investing in four apartments in a building which was being built in Dubai, but that the company had been wound down in 2009. The wider revelations have triggered a political maelstrom in Iceland, further undermining confidence in its political and financial elite. Monkeys descend on Pikat village cemetary SEMARAPURA - An unsual sight took place in the cemetery of Pikat village, Dawan, Klungkung last Thusrday. Dozens of monkeys descended from the mountains in groups looking for food in and around the cemetery. It is believe that the monkeys came down from Muntig Hill because they were lacking food. As observed on Saturday, dozens of monkeys arrived in groups but quickly disperse as they entered the cemetery where they scrambled to get at the food offerings left by local residents on the tombs of their relatives. Strangely, the monkeys that descend to the Pikat village cemetery did not disturb any people. In fact the monkeys waited politely as residents finished presenting their offerings before snatching the fruits from the tombs. Only after the people had finished their rituals did the monkeys spread out to collect the offerings. Another strange thing is that the monkeys did not linger in the cemetery. After two hours of snacking on the offerings, the monkeys returned to Muntig Hill. Nengah Sutaryajana ,Chief of Sente Hamlet, Pikat, explained that these monkeys have in fact been coming down for get food in the cemetray since 1995. “Usually the monkeys come to the cemetery around 10:00AM and then leave two hours later” he said. Sutaryajana also explained that the monkeys never disturb anyone or interfere with religious activities in the cemetery even though they clearly come looking for food. They also never disturb any village crops. Likewise the people of Pikat also do not dare to disturb the monkeys and to the contrary place offerings in Anggara Kasih Tambir on the shrine of the Taman Beji located on the slope of the Muntig hill with the desire to preserve the wildlife there. “In 2014, one of the villagers shot a monkey dead but fell seriously ill shortly thereafter. Since then, no one dares to disturb them”, said. Sutaryajana guesses that the monkeys come down to the village because they lack food in the hills – especially in the dry season. This herd of monkeys lives in the Muntig Hills but also to the north IBP/net in Muncung Hills. “Probably, the population reaches hundreds of Dozens of monkeys descended from the mountains in groups looking for food in and around the monkeys (at Muntig and Muncung hill). Turkish leader files complaint against “insulting” poem read on German TV

BERLIN - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has filed a complaint against a comedian who recited a satirical and sexually crude poem about him on German television, complicating Berlin’s attempts to get Turkey’s help in dealing with Europe’s migrant crisis. The issue pits freedom of speech values that are core to Western Europe against recent moves in Turkey by Erdogan that critics say crack down on dissent. The public prosecutor’s office in the western city of Mainz said Erdogan had filed the complaint via lawyers against Jan Boehmermann for insulting him. Boehmermann is the host of the late-night “Neo Magazin Royale” on the public ZDF channel. In a programme broadcast on March 31, Boehmermann had recited a poem about Erdogan that contained crude sexual references and accusations that Erdogan repressed minorities and mistreated Kurds and Christians. Before reading it, Boehmermann referred to a satirical song broadcast on NDR television that had mocked Erdogan for his authoritarian treatment of journalists. That show led Turkey to call in Germany’s envoy to provide an explanation, although Germany rejected Turkish protests. Suicide blast in Yemen’s Aden kills four - sources ADEN - A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden belt near a football stadium in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden on Tuesday, killing at least four people, witnesses and a security source said. Ten people were wounded in the attack, which appeared to target young army recruits waiting for buses outside a military checkpoint in the city’s north, the witnesses and source added. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but jihadist militants have carried out similar suicide bombings in Aden in the past. BUSINESS UK inflation rises to highest level in 15 months LONDON — Britain’s inflation rate has risen unexpectedly to its highest level in 15 months, driven by higher air fares over the Easter period. The Office of National Statistics said Tuesday the annual inflation rate rose to 0.5 percent last month, up from 0.3 percent in February. It was slightly higher than consensus forecasts of 0.4 percent. The rise was driven by air fares,

Hertz seeing a glut, trims revenue outlook; shares tumble NEW YORK — Hertz is cutting its revenue expectations for the year, saying that the rental car market is suffering from excess capacity. The news sent shares of Hertz tumbling 9 percent Monday in midday trading, and it dragged down rival Avis Budget Group by more than 7 percent. There were implications that the industry was under pressure. Avis had previously predicted flat pricing for the year. “Overall, we are not surprised to see continued pricing pressure and overcapacity concerns weighing on the business given similar

SAN JUAN — Puerto Rico’s government released a new proposal Monday for restructuring part of its $70 billion debt to buy time to implement a fiscal plan as multimillion-dollar payments loom for the U.S. territory facing dwindling cash reserves. Government officials proposed to exchange $49 billion of debt into up to $28 billion of base bonds and nearly $2 billion of tax-exempt capital appreciation bonds. They said the voluntary exchange would allow creditors to recover the full principal they invested regardless of future economic growth rates. The plan also includes a special clause for those who live in Puerto Rico and hold certain bonds. Officials said that group could receive up to $8 billion of local holder base bonds that repays the full principal they originally invested at a 2 percent interest rate. Government officials said Puerto Rico could cut $12 billion to $16 billion from its debt load under the new deal. They said this would allow the island’s government to keep providing essential services, pay back local vendors and suppliers, boost liquidity and fund retirement systems, among other things. “The fact is that we will only

be able to address these issues by working together,” said Secretary of State Victor Suarez. Investor groups have proposed tougher terms. They did not respond to a request for comment on the new plan, which could mean a loss for some. Puerto Rican officials said they discussed the plan with investors’ advisers in late March. David Tawil, co-founder and portfolio manager of New Yorkbased Maglan Capital, said bondholders would likely not consider the deal aggressive enough, but said it was a smart move by government officials amid uncertainty of how courts and U.S. Congress will respond to the island’s economic crisis. “This is a good-faith effort in the sense that it’s holistic,” he said in a phone interview. “It provides for varying types of recovery depending on whether you want to be part of (Puerto Rico’s) future or whether you want to go ahead and cash out in your investment immediately.”

A group of investors and the Assured Guaranty insurance company, which together hold nearly $6.5 billion worth of general obligation bonds, have offered to defer repayment of nearly $2 billion in principal for the next five years to help the island avoid a default in July. The investors also offered $750 million in liquidity through another general obligation bond sale. Puerto Rico’s government rejected the deal, saying it would only incur more debt and lead to cash shortfalls. Government officials said their proposal would reduce the debt service-to-revenue ratio on taxsupported debt from 36 percent to 15 percent. They noted that is still higher than the most indebted U.S. states. Creditors, however, have questioned the validity of financial statistics that Puerto Rico’s government has provided. The plan comes as Puerto Rico urges the U.S. Congress to approve a debt-restructuring mechanism. U.S. House Republicans are seeking consensus on a bill that aims in part to create a federal fiscal control board to audit the island’s government. JAKARTA - The attorney general office has accused the Corruption Eradication Commission of breaking the procedure when raiding and sealing the high prosecution office of West Java. “As far as I know it was against the procedure,” Junior Attorney General for Supervision Widyo Pramono, said here on Monday. The Caught Red handed Operation on two prosecutors of the West Java prosecution office was also against procedure as the arrest was made without official order, Widyo said. Widyo referred to the arrested of two unnamed prosecutors of the West Java high prosecution office earlier on Monday on charge of accepting bribery. This constitutional state has to be protected with proper law enforcement,” he said. Unconfirmed reports said one of the two prosecutors arrested by KPK task force has an initial of D who handled corruption case in Subang. Moi Tin said prostitution has been rampant in Sorong resulting in high rate of HIV/AIDS cases as well as violence on women in the city. “In order to save people of the younger generation the Malanu location and the massage parlors should be closed,” she said. She question the need for forming a special committee by the city council to study call for the closure of prostitution centers. “We appreciate the decision of the city administration to ban sales of alcoholic drinks. We hope the government also close prostitution houses,” she said. Sorong Mayor Lambert Jitmau said his administration also wanted to close prostitution centers but it could not be easily done as prostitutes also need income to live on like any other people. “PSK (prostitutes) also want to live , therefore, plan to close prostitution centers has to be prepared so that no body is hurt,” the mayor said. He said the city administration has studied and discussed the prostitution issue with the city council to find a right solution, whether the places have to be closed or moved away from the city center. ATHENS - Keen to clear the decks for its lucrative summer tourist season, Greece is trying to clear thousands of migrants out of its biggest port where they are sleeping rough by persuading them that they are better off in organised reception centres. More than 50,000 migrants have been stranded in Greece because of multiple border closures across the Balkans to the north, sealing off a land corridor to wealthy northwestern Europe used by a million people before them fleeing conflict and deprivation in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The port of Piraeus is the main gateway to Greece’s Aegean islands beloved of tourists - but also for an annual exodus of Greeks from the main-

AUGUSTA - The ecstasy of Danny Willett’s three-shot victory at the Masters on Sunday will forever be linked to the eye-popping agony of Jordan Spieth’s stunning collapse on the back nine at Augusta National. Brocchi becomes Milan’s fifth coach in little more than two years. Indonesia, currently serving a FIFA ban, are one of the four countries vying to host the 2023 Asian Cup, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said on Tuesday. The AFC Competitions Committee said they had received expression of interests from China, Thailand, South Korea as well as Indonesia, banned almost a year ago for political interference in the local football association. The quartet who met the March 31 deadline will now have to provide government guarantees, legal opinion on their bids and enter into a bidding agreement, the AFC said after a meeting in Kuala Lumpur. United Arab Emirates will stage the 2019 Asian Cup after they edged out a bid from Iran to host the tournament, which will feature 24 teams for the first time after expanding from 16 in Australia last year. Greece tries to coax camped-out migrants into centres as tourist season nears

ATHENS - Keen to clear the decks for its lucrative summer tourist season, Greece is trying to clear thousands of migrants out of its biggest port where they are sleeping rough by persuading them that they are better off in organised reception centres. More than 50,000 migrants have been stranded in Greece because of multiple border closures across the Balkans to the north, sealing off a land corridor to wealthy northwestern Europe used by a million people before them fleeing conflict and deprivation in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The port of Piraeus is the main gateway to Greece’s Aegean islands beloved of tourists - but also for an annual exodus of Greeks from the main-

land to celebrate Orthodox Easter. So Greek officials, anxious not to scare off the travellers’ trade so vital to the debt-ridden country’s cash-starved treasury, are at pains to stress to migrants camped out there that Piraeus is not a home. To that end, they are circulating a pamphlet, in Piraeus and other areas of Greece with impromptu migrant camps, showing the beaming face of a child, a man using thumb and forefinger to show a loveheart and a

It reads: “The boards (borders) to other European states are now blocked from all directions and unfortunately there is no hope that they are going to open in the foreseeable future.” The pamphlet, published by the Greek coastguard in Arabic, Farsi, English and Greek, is a gentle undertaking to coax migrants to head to organised reception centres. “The Greek people will always be your friend,” it adds. BUSINESS UK inflation rises to highest level in 15 months LONDON — Britain’s inflation rate has risen unexpectedly to its highest level in 15 months, driven by higher air fares over the Easter period. The Office of National Statistics said Tuesday the annual inflation rate rose to 0.5 percent last month, up from 0.3 percent in February. It was slightly higher than consensus forecasts of 0.4 percent. The rise was driven by air fares,

which climbed 22.9 percent, and by clothing, which rose 1.7 percent. Despite the increase, the rate remains well below the Bank of England’s 2 percent target. Hertz seeing a glut, trims revenue outlook; shares tumble NEW YORK — Hertz is cutting its revenue expectations for the year, saying that the rental car market is suffering from excess capacity. The news sent shares of Hertz tumbling 9 percent Monday in midday trading, and it dragged down rival Avis Budget Group by more than 7 percent. There were implications that the industry was under pressure. Avis had previously predicted flat pricing for the year. “Overall, we are not surprised to see continued pricing pressure and overcapacity concerns weighing on the business given similar

commentary by Avis earlier in the year,” wrote Citi analyst Manish A. Somaiya. Hertz CEO John Tague says that overflow will likely moderate heading into the peak summer season. Hertz Global Holdings Inc. now expects U.S. car rental revenue to range from flat to dropping by 1.5 percent. The company had previously projected growth between 1.5 percent and 2.5 percent. SAN JUAN — Puerto Rico’s government released a new proposal Monday for restructuring part of its $70 billion debt to buy time to implement a fiscal plan as multimillion-dollar payments loom for the U.S. territory facing dwindling cash reserves. Government officials proposed to exchange $49 billion of debt into up to $28 billion of base bonds and nearly $2 billion of tax-exempt capital appreciation bonds. They said the voluntary exchange would allow creditors to recover the full principal they invested regardless of future economic growth rates. The plan also includes a special clause for those who live in Puerto Rico and hold certain bonds. Officials said that group could receive up to $8 billion of local holder base bonds that repays the full principal they originally invested at a 2 percent interest rate. Government officials said Puerto Rico could cut $12 billion to $16 billion from its debt load under the new deal. They said this would allow the island’s government to keep providing essential services, pay back local vendors and suppliers, boost liquidity and fund retirement systems, among other things. “The fact is that we will only

be able to address these issues by working together,” said Secretary of State Victor Suarez. Investor groups have proposed tougher terms. They did not respond to a request for comment on the new plan, which could mean a loss for some. Puerto Rican officials said they discussed the plan with investors’ advisers in late March. David Tawil, co-founder and portfolio manager of New Yorkbased Maglan Capital, said bondholders would likely not consider the deal aggressive enough, but said it was a smart move by government officials amid uncertainty of how courts and U.S. Congress will respond to the island’s economic crisis. “This is a good-faith effort in the sense that it’s holistic,” he said in a phone interview. “It provides for varying types of recovery depending on whether you want to be part of (Puerto Rico’s) future or whether you want to go ahead and cash out in your investment immediately.”

A group of investors and the Assured Guaranty insurance company, which together hold nearly $6.5 billion worth of general obligation bonds, have offered to defer repayment of nearly $2 billion in principal for the next five years to help the island avoid a default in July. The investors also offered $750 million in liquidity through another general obligation bond sale. Puerto Rico’s government rejected the deal, saying it would only incur more debt and lead to cash shortfalls. Government officials said their proposal would reduce the debt service-to-revenue ratio on taxsupported debt from 36 percent to 15 percent. They noted that is still higher than the most indebted U.S. states. Creditors, however, have questioned the validity of financial statistics that Puerto Rico’s government has provided. The plan comes as Puerto Rico urges the U.S. Congress to approve a debt-restructuring mechanism. U.S. House Republicans are seeking consensus on a bill that aims in part to create a federal fiscal control board to audit the island’s government. Komodo exercise to strengthen Indonesia`s maritime culture: President

PADANG - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) expressed hope that the Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo (MNEK) would help to strengthen Indonesias maritime culture. The non-combat exercise would also boost cooperation among navies of the countries in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, Jokowi stated in his opening remarks at the International Fleet Review (IFR) 2016 held to coincide with the biennial MNEK 2016 here, Tuesday. The delegations of the Komodo Exercise 2016 are scheduled to organize humanitarian activities such as free medical services and assistance to construct public facilities and infrastructure. “This exercise is also expected to promote common understanding on the protection of marine natural resources, regional cooperation, and the improvement of human resources in the maritime sector,” the head of state

The Indonesian Navy is hosting the MNEK 2016 coinciding with the IFR 2016 and the 15th Western Pacific Naval Symposium in Padang and Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra Province from April 12 to 16, 2016. Fifteen foreign countries have sent their 20 warships to participate in the events. The participating countries are Bangladesh, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, the United States, Japan, France, Russia, China, Sri Lanka, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam. JAKARTA - The attorney general office has accused the Corruption Eradication Commission of breaking the procedure when raiding and sealing the high prosecution office of West Java. “As far as I know it was against the procedure,” Junior Attorney General for Supervision Widyo Pramono, said here on Monday. Widyo referred to the arrested of two unnamed prosecutors of the West Java high prosecution office earlier on Monday on charge of accepting bribery. This constitutional state has to be protected with proper law enforcement,” he said. Unconfirmed reports said one of the two prosecutors arrested by KPK task force has an initial of D who handled corruption case in Subang. Moi Tin said prostitution has been rampant in Sorong resulting in high rate of HIV/AIDS cases as well as violence on women in the city. “In order to save people of the younger generation the Malanu location and the massage parlors should be closed,” she said. She question the need for forming a special committee by the city council to study call for the closure of prostitution centers. “We appreciate the decision of the city administration to ban sales of alcoholic drinks. We hope the government also close prostitution houses,” she said. Sorong Mayor Lambert Jitmau said his administration also wanted to close prostitution centers but it could not be easily done as prostitutes also need income to live on like any other people. “PSK (prostitutes) also want to live , therefore, plan to close prostitution centers has to be prepared so that no body is hurt,” the mayor said. He said the city administration has studied and discussed the prostitution issue with the city council to find a right solution, whether the places have to be closed or moved away from the city center. If the places is to be closed, the city administration has to find a way to be fair to the women living from commercial sex , he added. AMLAPURA - Lately, the price of rambutan in Karangsokong Subagan has gone way down with fruit on the stalk goig for IDR 4,000 per kg and destalked fruit going for just IDR 2,000 per kg. Housewife Kadek Maryati said that she brought her rambutan at Karangsokong Market for IDR 2,000 per kg. In traditional village markets like the one in Culik village, good waulity rambutan are being sold for IDR 4,000 per kg. “Rambutan is abundant because it is the harvest season in Karangasem which makes the price go way down”, said Nengah Balik, a rambutan grower in Karangasem. Meanwhile the price of sugar apples is more of a relief for famers, with prices at IDR 2,000 apiece because although it is also harvest season for this fruit, there are simply not very many sugar apples available and school children love them as witnesses in the cafeteria of SDN 2 Tulamben elementary school in Kelod hamlet, Tulamben. During break time, the students scrambled to purchase sugar apple for IDR 2,000 each. The price of snakefruit in Karangasem is now soaring as the har-

vest season draws to a close. At traditional market in Karangasem, snakefruit are now being sold for around IDR 6,000 to IDR 10,000 per kg. Sugar snakefruit are even more rare and thus expensive with prices reaching as much as IDR 15,000 per kg. Iceland finance minister says won’t resign over Panama Papers leaks

LONDON - Iceland’s Finance Minister Bjarni Benediktsson said on Tuesday he would not resign over the Panama Papers leaks, which showed he was once had a stake in an offshore investment firm in the Seychelles. Asked by reporters in London whether he would quit, Benediktsson answered: “No”. The statement came a week after Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson resigned as prime minister over the leaked documents which showed his wife owned an offshore company that held debt from failed Icelandic banks. The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which saw the leaked papers from Panamanian lawyers Mossack Fonseca, said they showed Benediktsson and two Icelandic businessmen had power of attorney over a shell company called Falson & Co. created in 2005 in the Seychelles. The Consortium reported that Benediktsson had confirmed he owned a third of the company and had said it was set up for investing in four apartments in a building which was being built in Dubai, but that the company had been wound down in 2009. The wider revelations have triggered a political maelstrom in Iceland, further undermining confidence in its political and financial elite. Monkeys descend on Pikat village cemetary SEMARAPURA - An unsual sight took place in the cemetery of Pikat village, Dawan, Klungkung last Thusrday. Dozens of monkeys descended from the mountains in groups looking for food in and around the cemetery. It is believe that the monkeys came down from Muntig Hill because they were lacking food. As observed on Saturday, dozens of monkeys arrived in groups but quickly disperse as they entered the cemetery where they scrambled to get at the food offerings left by local residents on the tombs of their relatives. Strangely, the monkeys that descend to the Pikat village cemetery did not disturb any people. In fact the monkeys waited politely as residents finished presenting their offerings before snatching the fruits from the tombs. Only after the people had finished their rituals did the monkeys spread out to collect the offerings. Another strange thing is that the monkeys did not linger in the cemetery. After two hours of snacking on the offerings, the monkeys returned to Muntig Hill. Nengah Sutaryajana ,Chief of Sente Hamlet, Pikat, explained that these monkeys have in fact been coming down for get food in the cemetray since 1995. “Usually the monkeys come to the cemetery around 10:00AM and then leave two hours later” he said. Sutaryajana also explained that the monkeys never disturb anyone or interfere with religious activities in the cemetery even though they clearly come looking for food. They also never disturb any village crops. Likewise the people of Pikat also do not dare to disturb the monkeys and to the contrary place offerings in Anggara Kasih Tambir on the shrine of the Taman Beji located on the slope of the Muntig hill with the desire to preserve the wildlife there. “In 2014, one of the villagers shot a monkey dead but fell seriously ill shortly thereafter. Since then, no one dares to disturb them”, said. Sutaryajana guesses that the monkeys come down to the village because they lack food in the hills – especially in the dry season. This herd of monkeys lives in the Muntig Hills but also to the north IBP/net in Muncung Hills. “Probably, the population reaches hundreds of Dozens of monkeys descended from the mountains in groups looking for food in and around the monkeys (at Muntig and Muncung hill). BERLIN - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has filed a complaint against a comedian who recited a satirical and sexually crude poem about him on German television, complicating Berlin’s attempts to get Turkey’s help in dealing with Europe’s migrant crisis. The issue pits freedom of speech values that are core to Western Europe against recent moves in Turkey by Erdogan that critics say crack down on dissent. The public prosecutor’s office in the western city of Mainz said Erdogan had filed the complaint via lawyers against Jan Boehmermann for insulting him. Boehmermann is the host of the late-night “Neo Magazin Royale” on the public ZDF channel. In a programme broadcast on March 31, Boehmermann had recited a poem about Erdogan that contained crude sexual references and accusations that Erdogan repressed minorities and mistreated Kurds and Christians. Before reading it, Boehmermann referred to a satirical song broadcast on NDR television that had mocked Erdogan for his authoritarian treatment of journalists. That show led Turkey to call in Germany’s envoy to provide an explanation, although Germany rejected Turkish protests. Boehmermann said the NDR broadcast fell under the right to artistic freedom, press

freedom and freedom of opinion and said his poem was an example of impermissible “abusive criticism”. Prosecutors said Erdogan’s complaint would be examined as part of a pending procedure. They had already begun investigating Boehmermann on suspicion of the crime of “offending foreign states’ organs and representatives” after more than 20 people filed complaints. On Monday, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman said Berlin was examining a formal request made by Turkey for it to prosecute Boehmermann and a decision would be made in the next days. Merkel, who has spearheaded EU efforts to secure Turkey’s help in dealing with Europe’s migrant crisis, has told Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in a telephone conversation that the poem was “deliberately offensive”. If the government decides to decline the Turkish request to prosecute Boehmermann, she risks a worsening of diplomatic relations with Turkey, Wolfgang Kubicki, senior member of Germany’s business-friendly FDP party, told NDR radio. “If the government were to support the move, there would be a huge backlash domestically,” he said, adding that in his opinion as a trained lawyer the poem was “distasteful” but within the limits of artistic freedom. Suicide blast in Yemen’s Aden kills four - sources ADEN - A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden belt near a football stadium in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden on Tuesday, killing at least four people, witnesses and a security source said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but jihadist militants have carried out similar suicide bombings in Aden in the past. Japan prepares for release of tritium from Fukushima plant

TOKYO — To dump or not to dump a little-discussed substance is the question brewing in Japan as it grapples with the aftermath of the nuclear catastrophe in Fukushima five years ago. The substance is tritium. The radioactive material is nearly impossible to remove from the huge quantities of water used to cool melted-down reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, which was wrecked by the massive tsunami in northeastern Japan in March 2011. The water is still accumulating since 300 tons are needed every day to keep the reactors chilled. Some is leaking into the ocean. Huge tanks lined up around the plant, at last count 1,000 of them, each hold hundreds of tons of water that have been cleansed of radioactive cesium and strontium but not of tritium. Ridding water of tritium has been carried out in laboratories. But it’s an effort that would be extremely costly at the scale required for the Fukushima plant, which sits on the Pacific coast. Many scientists argue it isn’t worth it and say the risks of dumping the tritium-laced water into the sea are minimal. Their calls to simply release the water into the Pacific Ocean are alarming many in Japan and

elsewhere. Rosa Yang, a nuclear expert at the Electric Power Research Institute, based in Palo Alto, California, who advises Japan on decommissioning reactors, believes the public angst is uncalled for. She says a Japanese government official should simply get up in public and drink water from one of the tanks to convince people it’s safe. But the line between safe and unsafe radiation is murky, and children are more susceptible to radiation-linked illness. Tritium goes directly into soft tissues and organs of the human body, potentially increasing the risks of cancer and other sicknesses. “Any exposure to tritium radiation could pose some health risk. This risk increases with prolonged exposure, and health risks include increased occurrence of cancer,” said Robert Daguillard, a spokesman for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The agency is trying to minimize the tritium from U.S. nuclear

facilities that escapes into drinking water. Right after the March 2011 disaster, many in Japan panicked, some even moving overseas although they lived hundreds of miles (kilometers) away from the Fukushima no-go zone. By now, concern has settled to the extent that some worry the lessons from the disaster are being forgotten. Tritium may be the least of Japan’s worries. Much hazardous work remains to keep the plant stabilized, and new technology is needed for decommissioning the plant’s reactors and containing massive radioactive contamination. The ranks of Japan’s anti-nuclear activists have been growing since the March 2011 accident, and many oppose releasing water with tritium into the sea. They argue that even if tritium’s radiation is weaker than strontium or cesium, it should be removed, and that good methods should be devised to do that. Japan’s fisheries organization has repeatedly expressed concerns over the issue. News of a release of the water could devastate local fisheries just as communities in northeastern Japan struggle to recover from the 2011 disasters. (ap)

SAN FRANCISCO — The robots are coming — to help run your life or sell you stuff — at an online texting service near you. In coming months, users of Facebook’s Messenger app, Microsoft’s Skype and Canada’s Kik can expect to find new automated assistants offering information and services at a variety of businesses. These messaging “chatbots” are basically software that can conduct human-like conversation and do simple jobs once reserved for people. Google and other companies are reportedly working on similar ideas. In Asia, software butlers are already part of the landscape. When Washington, D.C., attorney Samantha Guo visited China recently, the 32-year-old said she was amazed at how extensively her friends used bots and similar technology on the texting service WeChat to pay for meals, order movie tickets and even send each other gifts. “It was mind-blowing,” Guo said. U.S. services lag way behind, she added. Online messaging has become routine for most people, offering more immediacy than email or voice calls, said Michael Wolf, a media and technology consultant. Messaging services are now growing faster than traditional online social platforms such as Facebook or Twitter, according to research by Wolf’s firm, Activate. And experts say messaging bots can handle a wider range of tasks than apps offered by retailers and other consumer businesses. In part, that’s because bots can recognize a variety of spoken or typed phrases, where apps force users to choose from options on a drop-down menu. Reaching a chatbot can be as simple as clicking a link in an online ad or scanning a boxy bar code with a smartphone camera. A specialpurpose app requires a download and often a new account sign-up. “Bots are the new apps,” Microsoft

CEO Satya Nadella said last month. Microsoft has just created new programming tools for businesses to build bots that will interact with customers on Skype, the Microsoft-owned Internet voice, video and messaging service. Facebook is widely expected to unveil similar tools for its Messenger chat service at the company’s annual software conference starting Tuesday. It’s already partnered with a few online retailers and transportation companies so consumers can use Messenger to check the status of a clothing purchase from online retailer Zulily, order car service from Uber or get a boarding pass from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. At those services, automated chatbots handle some interactions, with supervision from human operators. Similarly, Facebook has been testing a digital assistant called “M’’ — sort of like Apple’s Siri or Microsoft’s Cortana — that can answer questions or perform tasks like ordering flowers in response to commands on Messenger. It uses a combination of artificial intelligence and input from human overseers. Another messaging service, Kik, which is popular among U.S. teenagers, opened a new “bot shop” last week. Kik users can talk to bots that will answer questions about the weather, show funny videos or help with online shopping. Slack, a messaging service used by businesses, has partnered with Taco Bell to introduce a “Taco Bot” that helps Slack users order ahead for meals at a local outlet. In Asia, many smartphone owners are used to playing games and buying items through messaging services like WeChat, which claims 700 million active users. One in five WeChat users has added bank or credit card information so that person can check balances, pay bills or send money to friends, according to the Andreesen Horowitz venture capital firm. The waterfalls located under the Putung hills should be well organized and promoted as a tourist attraction considering the snakefruit agrotourism in the area is underdeveloped. A legislator of the Karangasem House of Representatives, Wayan Suparta, delivered the matter on Sunday (Apr. 10) in Karangasem. He stated the road to the location is pretty good and has been paved. He said the waterfalls are quite large and matchless. Uniquely, there are two waterfalls, one runs from the north while another from the south. When getting to the quite large waterfall, the pathway remains pristine with views of the cliffs and verdant hills. He said that all this time the residents at his village used it as a place of invoking holy water for ritual. Besides, local residents also believe that the waterfall is a good place for purificatory rite or malukat after suffering disease or other distress. There are also people invoking holy water or doing purificatory rite for

recovery. All this time, only the residents of local village make a visit to the waterfalls. It happens because the waterfalls are not widely known yet, while the location is also quite far or it will take people about one hour. Singer Bryan Adams cancels Mississippi show to protest same-sex law

MISSISSIPPI - Canadian singer Bryan Adams has canceled a show in Mississippi to protest a new state law that will let people with religious objections deny services to same-sex couples, the second major concert scrapped in the U.S. South over discrimination concerns. On Friday, rock star Bruce Springsteen called off a weekend concert in North Carolina to show his opposition to a new law there barring transgender people from choosing bathrooms consistent with their gender identity. The cancellations come as U.S. states consider legislation seen as restricting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. Supporters of the measures say they are needed to keep women and children safe in restrooms and to protect religious freedom after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year legalized same-sex marriage.

Adams, who was set to perform on Thursday at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, called the state’s measure “extremely discriminatory.” “I cannot in good conscience perform in a state where certain people are being denied their civil rights due to their sexual orientation,” Adams wrote on his website. The law signed in Mississippi last week allows people with religious objections to deny wedding services to same-sex couples and permits employers to cite religion in determining workplace policies on dress code, grooming and bathroom

Snow appeared to be killed off at the end of season five of the popular drama based on novels by George R.R. Martin but HBO sent fans into a frenzy last year when it tweeted a season six teaser poster with a shot of his bloody face. “Listen, my only reply is the man’s had about 25 knives in his chest - how much steel does he need to have in his body to be confirmed dead? He’s dead, dead as a doornail,” Liam Cunningham, who plays Davos Seaworth, told Reuters. “It’s so sad. He’s gone, gone ... Such a shame. RIO de JENEIRO - A congressional committee in Brazil has recommended the ousting of the country’s embattled president Dilma Rousseff. The committee’s vote - 38 to 27 in favour of impeachment - is not binding but sets the stage for a crucial vote in the country’s lower house.

Ms Rousseff is accused of breaking fiscal laws to mask the dire state of the budget during her re-election in 2014. If the impeachment measure was to move to the Senate, they would then decide whether to open a trial, something that would see Ms Rous-

seff suspended from office for up to 180 days during proceedings. If Ms Rousseff was eventually impeached, the reins would pass to her vice president Michel Temer. On Monday, a recording was released via a newspaper of Mr Temer rehearsing the speech he is preparing for when he takes over. His team said the leak was accidental but which Ms Rousseff’s supporters say it is evidence of a “coup”. The road does not appear smooth for him either, however: while a poll shows that 61% of Brazilians favour impeaching Ms Rousseff, 58% think Mr Temer should suffer the same fate.
