MADRID - A Spanish court ruled Wednesday that Grammy award-winning singer Julio Iglesias is the biological father of a 43-year-old man after a protracted paternity battle with the star. The judge in the case refused to admit DNA evidence obtained surreptitiously by a private detective working for the claimant and his lawyer. But he ruled that the man’s mother had provided credible details of her affair with the singer and also cited the physical resemblance between the two men. Iglesias himself has always refused to give DNA evidence to settle the dispute. The case was brought by Javier Sanchez Santos, the son of Portuguese former ballerina Maria Edite, who says she had a brief affair with Iglesias in 1975. After examining the paternity suit, a judge at a court in the eastern
city of Valencia “declares that Julio Iglesias is his biological father”, the court said in a statement. Edite told the court that she had a one-week affair with Iglesias in Catalonia in Spain’s northeast in July 1975 and that nine months later Javier was born, said Sanchez’s lawyer, Fernando Osuna. The singer’s defence team had argued that the trial should not take place since the case had already gone to court before and was dismissed. The 75-year-old singer did not attend the trial. But Osuna had argued a new trial was justified as they had “DNA evidence” brought from the United States by a detective. (afp)

Cancellation of Minaj Saudi concert stirs online anger

US rapper Nicki Minaj arrives for the 2019 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
RIYADH - The cancellation of a concert by rapper Nicki Minaj in Saudi Arabia triggered a fresh social media storm on Wednesday, with many fans in the ultra-conservative kingdom voicing disappointment and demanding ticket refunds. The American star on Tuesday said she pulled out of the July 18 concert in a show of support for women’s and gay rights in Saudi Arabia. The announcement of her performance in the western city of Jeddah had prompted an online backlash from arch-conservatives as the kingdom pursues a contentious liberalisation drive that has loosened decades-old restrictions on entertainment. “So sad, I was preparing to do a Michael Jackson dance at the party,” one Twitter user wrote as some fans angrily demanded refunds from organisers. Organisers of the Jeddah Season
cultural festival had said thousands of tickets were sold for the concert that includes performances by British musician Liam Payne and American DJ Steve Aoki. The singer also faced a torrent of abuse for supporting gay rights in the Islamic kingdom, with one person writing on Twitter: “Cancellation of the party is good news. Praise be to Allah.” Homosexuality is forbidden in Islam. Minaj is well-known for her provocative, profanity-laced lyrics and skin-baring music videos. The singer insisted on Twitter that she did not want to perform in a country where “women have no rights”, but added that her decision was not intended to “disrespect” the Saudi government. Citing unnamed sources, a few Saudi media outlets including the pro-government Okaz newspaper insisted that it was the kingdom

that cancelled the concert as it went against local “customs and values”. Saudi entertainment authorities and the media ministry did not respond to AFP’s requests for comment. The kingdom has faced intense international scrutiny over its human rights record since last year’s killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul and the ongoing trial of women activists. Saudi Arabia is boosting entertainment that allows citizens to have fun, in what some see as an attempt to blunt public frustration over an economic downturn and high youth unemployment. The country’s General Entertainment Authority said it plans to pump $64 billion into the sector in the coming decade. The reform also stems partly from an economic motive to boost domestic spending on entertainment as the kingdom has reeled from low oil prices. (afp)
Kebon Sirih’s several hundred asylum seekers need food assistance

JAKARTA - Hundreds of asylum seekers, who had rallied and set up tents in front of the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee) office in Kebon Sirih, Central Jakarta, are in dire need of food assistance. “There is no breakfast. We only get food during the day and night,” Talib Hussain, an Afghan asylum seeker, stated at Kebon Sirih, Central Jakarta, Thursday. Hussain noted that food aid had only been received from donations trickling in from the adjoining communities. Until 14:20 WIB, they had not received any food. Some small children of refugees also appeared to be begging for food from traders and employees
around the Kebon Sirih area. In addition to desperately seeking food, hundreds of refugees fleeing war also require drinking water to overcome dehydration. “It is sad to see these children. I have considered them like my own family,” Masyudi, one of the volunteers, who helped the refugees, stated. The Jakarta Government had earlier coordinated with the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and UNHCR to provide a temporary shelter for the asylum seekers. The alternative temporary shelter for refugees is the Ex-District Military Command’s building in Kalideres, West Jakarta.Jakarta regional secretary Saefullah said the relocation of the asylum seekers dwelling in roadsides of Kebon Sirih, Central Jakarta is awaiting Foreign Affairs Ministry’s decision. He said the ministry will hold a meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on the matter. “We are waiting for the Ministry and UNHCR discussion result, on what the provincial administration
can do,” said Saefullah in the City Hall, Central Jakarta, Wednesday, July 10. According to Saefullah, there are 260 immigrants camped out in the sidewalk. So the city must take a measure since they are already disturbing public facility. But on the other hand, Jakarta must concern them for humanitarian reasons. When the ministry makes a decision, Saefullah went on, the city administration will relocate them to Kalideres area, West Jakarta near the UNHCR office in order to ease the coordination. The immigrants came from the Middle East and started to occupy
the sidewalks since last week. They claimed to have waited for four months to get a place and country to visit. One of the refugee Omid, 15, said that he hoped the Indonesian government could provide him a place. “We are poor people, our country is in war, there’s no place to live,” he said.
