Berlin film fest opens with Clooney -- and eye on refugees

BERLIN - George Clooney will be in town on Thursday when “Hail, Caesar!” opens the annual Berlin Film Festival, and Meryl Streep is the competition jury president, but the politically attuned showcase hopes to attract refugees as well as film fans this year. The festival that began in 1951 when Germany -- and Europe -- was recovering from a war that had uprooted millions of people is making an extra effort to welcome the latest wave of refugees who have fled war in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere. Refugees will be taken behind the scenes of the festival, some accompanied by NGO workers who are helping them to adjust to life in Germany, and there will be a refugee-staffed food truck serving up Mediterranean fare with the aid of a celebrity chef, the festival said in a statement. Dieter Kosslick, the festival’s director, told Reuters in an interview that without losing sight of its primary goal of presenting the best of world cinema, this year’s Berlinale is programmed in part to show why people become refugees. “If you lose your homeland you don’t lose it because you want to leave your house, you want to leave your garden, your flowers, your family,” Kosslick said. “You want

to be happy, and you are leaving because you are not happy and this is the way you can see the whole Berlinale.” Germany has taken in more than a million refugees over the past year, the largest number of any European country. One of the competition films, “Fuocoamare” (Fire at Sea) by director Gianfranco Rosi, whose “Sacro GRA” won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival in 2013, is a documentary about refugees piling up on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa. “La Route d’Istanbul” (Road to Istanbul), in the festival’s Panorama programme, is a drama about a mother trying to rescue her daughter from Islamic State militants in Syria.

willing to marry her if the opportunity arose. His lawyers called him to testify in his own defense in the felony stalking case. He sent Paltrow 66 messages and packages between 2009 and 2015, but none of the recent correspondence included pornography. A judge has said the earlier messages could be important to understanding Paltrow’s fear of Soiu. Paltrow testified Monday she was afraid of Soiu and began crying when she expressed fears about her children’s safety. Deputy District Attorney Wendy Segall questioned why Paltrow would want to marry him after he had sent her so many lewd messages and she had to testify against him. “I was

“POLITICAL CORRECTNESS”?

Jay Weissberg, a Europe-based critic for trade publication Variety, said it was no surprise that the Berlin festival would make refugees a theme at a time when Europe is wrestling with how to deal with the millions fleeing to its shores. “My problem with it basically ... is it just smacks a little bit too much of the Berlinale showing off its political correctness,” Weissberg said in an interview. “At the same time I want to say, ‘Why not?’Aren’t we acknowledging Syrians in Syria went to film festivals and now that they’re in Germany why aren’t we also trying to normalise their lives -and perhaps this is a way to do it.” Weissberg was more enthusiastic about the breakthrough this year for Arabic language films. Competition film “Inhebbek Hedi” (Hedi) is about a young Tunisian man about to be married who falls in love with a tourist guide. “Barakah yoqabil Barakah” (Barakah Meets Barakah), in the Forum strand, is described as a Saudi romantic comedy. trying to show I had changed and I had become a different person,” Soiu said. “I wanted to show a new face towards her.” Soiu said he didn’t want to scare the actress, but he was intent on her responding to him. “I wanted her to say flat out, ‘I don’t want to marry you,’ “ he said. “That way I would have a definite response from her.” He said he wrote to many public figures, including President Barack Obama, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin offering counsel on world affairs and solutions to problems. He conceded that his notes to Paltrow were the only ones that expressed an interest in marriage. “Oh, no, I don’t want to marry

Accused Paltrow stalker discusses desire to marry actress

LOS ANGELES — An Ohio man charged with stalking Gwyneth Paltrow testified Wednesday that he sent her dozens of messages in the hope she might want to marry him despite her testifying against him in a previous stalking case. Dante Soiu testified that he wanted his messages to show her unconditional love and friendship and that he had no animosity toward her over the earlier case, which sent him to a mental institution for several years. That case involved 500 messages, including sex toys and pornography, Soiu sent Paltrow in 1999 and 2000. Soiu told jurors he wanted to let Paltrow know he was available and

Putin,” Soiu said. Soiu was found not guilty by reason of insanity in 2000 in the previous case involving pornographic messages he sent to Paltrow. He was re-arrested last year after sending the actress new correspondence. He said he was addicted to pornography at the time but said he is now on medication and considers himself healed. The recent batch of letters described Soiu’s intention to marry the actress as well as a pair of earrings he sent her in 2009 as a Christmas gift, some secondhand clothes and a Weight Watchers cookbook. He has also sent her religious books, and forwarded her letters he has sent to President Barack Obama and actress

Angelina Jolie. One letter described Paltrow “bowing to death,” a reference the actress said she found disturbing. Soiu, a self-described born again Christian from Columbus, Ohio, said he was referencing spiritual, not physical death, in his letters. He said he hoped the Oscar winner would write him back if she wanted him to stop. “I wanted her to at least be a pen pal or at least say something,” Soiu said. Soiu testified he believed he had an understanding with Paltrow’s lawyer that he could write to the actress until he was told to stop. He conceded that he never spoke or corresponded with the lawyer to reach that agreement. (ap)

Many of the DKLP personnel were asking a day off to celebrate Galungan. This condition made the garbage was taken to the final disposal place one step at a time. “There are also some problems with the trucks because 10 of them are being repaired. It makes us work longer,” he added. Wisada said that currently, they have 30 trucks to carry the garbage throughout the city. The number of garbage was increasing dramatically because the Hindus in Denpasar was celebrating Galungan and the leftover of the ceremony made it pilling up. Responding to Benoa Bay reclamation

Bugbug firmly rejects, Jasri still hesitates

Amlapur a — Vi l lages on the east coast of the Island of Bali begin to react against the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. Other than the customary village of Ujung Hyang, Karangasem, similar rejection came from the Bugbug customary village. As one of the old villages in Karangasem, it expressly rejects

the Benoa Bay reclamation, while the people of Jasri still hesitate to determine their attitude. Chief of Bugbug customary village, Jero Wayan Mas Suyasa, said on Monday that God has created the island as a whole complete with its natural potential. He asked that investors should not try to change the Bali mainland with reclamation. Bali cannot be equated with advanced regions with reclamation

area. Balinese people are known to honor the sea, so that its sustainability should be maintained and not even covering up to 800 hectares. “God has created the Island of Bali in complete condition. Never make the nature of Bali unbalanced with reclamation,” said Mas Suyasa. He considered the rejection by the majority of Balinese people is a form of natural reaction that the nature of Bali rejects against such

a plan. Reclamation is very horrible for Bali, not only for the location of the reclamation, but also for the other parts, especially in the coastal territories due to disruption of natural balance of Bali. Abrasion will obviously threaten the eastern coast of Bali, especially Karangasem that has been damaged due to the impact of previous abrasion. Mas Suyasa admitted to be very concerned with the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. By

thinking more about the negative impact on the natural balance of Bali, the plan should be undone. “Obviously, our coastal residents are worried. But this is just a matter of process. Seeing the rejection of Balinese people, I have confidence that the reclamation cannot be realized,” he said. Bugbug Continued on page 2...
