Gyllenhaal chases crime shots in ‘Nightcrawler’ Agence France-Presse
TORONTO - Jake Gyllenhaal becomes a blood-thirsty crime photographer who rushes to scenes of gruesome murders, home invasions and robberies in order to sell the footage to local television stations in “Nightcrawler.” The American actor who shot to fame in Ang Lee’s epic film “Brokeback Mountain,” about two men in love, and reaffirmed his acting chops in last year’s “Prisoners” is back at the Toronto International Film Festival this year to promote Dan Gilroy’s directorial debut, appearing leaner and meaner. He plays Lou Bloom, a loner and petty thief who trolls the Los Angeles night before happening upon so-called nightcrawlers in action. He buys himself a cheap video camera and a police radio scanner and joins in, going head-to-head with seasoned professionals such as Joe Loder (Bill Paxton). He thrives in this new line of work, with some help from television producer Nina, played by Rene Russo (“The Thomas Crown Affair,” “Thor”). If a crime scene doesn’t quite tell the story Nina wants, he moves bodies around to enhance the photo. Screenwriter-turned-director Dan Gilroy (“Freejack,” “The Bourne Legacy”) received a warm reception
from the audience at the world premiere of his film. “I didn’t know when I wrote the script that I would direct it later,” he told the audience. But after working for a long time in the film industry, he added, “I thought I was ready for that.” In the end, “We all made the film we wanted to make -something rare and special,” he said. The film’s completely twisted protagonist does not appear to have a past, a family or even friends. He is chatty and does not like to be contradicted. “He is a chilling metaphor for filmmakers,” said Toronto film festival artistic director Cameron Bailey. Commenting on the role, Gyllenhaal said he used to cross paths with coyotes growing up in Los Angeles. “Lou is like the coyotes in the streets. Los Angeles at night, the wilderness begins, all the animals come out,” he said.
The comedian detailed in her 2012 book “I Hate Everyone ... Starting With Me” that she hoped for “a huge showbiz affair with lights, cameras, action” and “Hollywood all the way.” Instead of a rabbi talking, Rivers asked for “Meryl Streep crying, in five different accents” and “a wind machine so that even in the casket my hair is blowing just like Beyonce’s.” The actual event Sunday may be slightly more muted. Funeral services at Temple Emanu-El in Manhattan will be private and neither the temple nor Rivers’ personal publicist would give further details or divulge a guest list. It was not even known what time the funeral would start. But cameras and a media presence was very likely. Rivers, who died Thursday at 81, was a trailblazer for all comics, but

especially for women. The raspy-voiced blonde with the brash New York accent was a TV talk show host, actress, a fashion critic, and she sold a line of jewelry. The cause of death was being investigated. Rivers had been hospitalized since Aug. 28 when she went into cardiac arrest during a routine procedure at a doctor’s office. The New York state health department is investigating the circumstances. In her book, Rivers joked that dying of natural causes was boring. “It’s the grand finale, act three, the eleven o’clock number — make it count. If you’re going to die, die interesting! Is there anything worse than a boring death? I think not.” Her publicist said that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to God’s Love, We Deliver; Guide Dogs for the Blind; or Our House.

Bali agriculture slumps
Farmers must be educated to be entrepreneur
Bali Post
DENPASAR - Rapid land conversion in Bali has adverse impact on the sustainability of the agricultural sector. Unsurprisingly the sector absorbing much labor turns obsolete. Such dark portrait was seen in the Agricultural Census 2013 where the number of farming household in Bali last year reached 408,233, a decline of 17.09 percent or with the average reduction of 1.70 percent per year since 2003 that was originally recorded to reach 492,394 households. Not only that, of the 404,507 farming households that were formerly cultivating their land in Bali Province, a total of 63.58 percent or 257,181 farming households were categorized into smallholder. Chairman of the Indonesian Tourism Scholars (ICPI) of Bali Chapter, I Putu Anom, argued that the government and stakeholders should create a new breakthrough by educating farmers not only on how to grow crops, but also how to educate them to be entrepreneurs. On that account, this sector could be improved and demanded again by the public.
“It’s time to educate farmers in order they can become agricultural entrepreneur whose products are ready to compete in terms of quantity and quality. As a result, more and more people will pursue the agricultural sector,” said Putu Anom. According to him, this time farmers are learning how to produce a quality product to meet the market
demand, particularly in the tourism sector. However, they do not have the ability to manage the abundant post-harvest product. “Indeed the government needs to make regulation to require tourism industry in Bali so that it serves local fruits and teaches them how to market their products. As a result, the price of products will not slump freely when the harvest is
abundant,” he explained. He said that central and local government should continue to work with universities to conduct a research and assessment on local products. The effort was made to improve the quantity and quality of local products, so that they could compete in international market. “The government should keep an eye on the products imported and local product in order to still comply with the quality standard, product validity, licensing, health standard and others,” he said. Meanwhile, the Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali, Panusunan Siregar, explained that based on the results of the Agricultural Census 2013, the average income of each farming household
sourcing from the agricultural sector in Bali amounted to IDR 11.97 million each year or about IDR 997,420 per month. From the income, in terms of the agricultural sector, the largest average income sourced from livestock namely at IDR 3.60 million each year or about 30.04 percent. Then, it was followed by plantation business at IDR 2.54 million (21.26 percent), rice crop at IDR 2.32 million (19.41 percent), horticulture at IDR 2.03 million (16.99 percent), marine fishing at IDR 409,000 (3.42 percent), crops at IDR 315,000 (2.63 percent), forestry crops at IDR 291,000 (2.43 percent), marine fish cultivation at IDR 151,000 (1.26 percent) and fish cultivation in ponds or freshwater at IDR 133,000.
