The congress will be held until Thursday, June 9, 2011 in Aston Hotel Denpasar and attended by more than 200 members of SPS
throughout Indonesia. On the occasion, the Governor said that the congress themed “the future of digitalization and interdependency
of media” will become the awakening of the media in applying the value of Pancasila. There is also great hope that the SPS institution can become the place to uphold the freedom of press and developing the healthier press industry. Mangku Pastika said that press hold a strategic position in the society. As the partner of the government, press could
help in the effort to develop the country. “Indonesian press must be active and work hard to make a conducive condition which can create a mentally strong and healthy society. This is very important to face the globalization which reduces the local values,” the Governor said. Continued on page 6
Abrasion become a problem in Bali Antara
Denpasar – Bali Environment Association (Walhi) noted on the abrasion which happen on several beach in Bali that is not tourism destination. “The government is only focusing on handling the abrasion on the beaches which are visited by tourists while the one that is not, is being neglected,” said the Head of Bali Walhi, Wayan Suardana. During the discussion held by Walhi entitled the Irony of Paradise Island, he said that the government seemed to forget the beach which is not tourism site. “However, the government doesn’t real-
ize that the effect of the damage on the neglected beaches could lead to the same problem in the tourism site beaches,” Suardana said. He is giving example on the Candikusuma Beach, Cupel and Perancak which suffer 20 meters of abrasion each year. Based on the data in 2009, from 437 km of Bali’s coastline, 181 km of it already suffer from abrasion. Meanwhile, the Vice regent of Jembrana, Made Kembang Hartawan, said that it is very difficult to handle the abrasion. “We hope that the Indonesian Government also assists us in handling the problem,” he added.
