Denpasar – Tens of members of Indonesian Environment Association (Walhi) rallied in front of Bali’s Governor Office to urge the moratorium of development of tourism accommodation in Bali. “Through the commemoration of the Environment Day, we urge the government to stop the development of tourism accommodation in Bali and create a development master plan which protects the environment,” said the Internal Deputy of Walhi Bali, Suryadi on Tuesday, June 5, 2012. According to him, the current condition of Bali is already damaged so the moratorium must be done promptly and properly. “By the recommendation to build Bali International Park which is supposed to be the place for the delegates of APEC in 2013 so it has overrule the current regulation,” Suryadi said. He also stated that the government slogan regarding environment is not only political talks. During the rally, Walhi Bali also placed a banner with various writing such as “Bali Not For Sale” and stop the changing from rice paddy to housing. They handed over seven demand of Walhi regarding the effort to preserve the environment in Bali through the moratorium to Bali Government.

An environmental activist, Agung Wardana, Monday (Jun 4) said the environmental problems had not been a priority in the development, both in the provincial and regency/ municipal government throughout Bali.
