Miley Cyrus, Beyonce join Harvey storm relief effort LOS ANGELES - Pop star Miley Cyrus and Oscar-winning actors Sandra Bullock and Leonardo DiCaprio pledged funds to help victims of storm Harvey, while Beyonce on Thursday said she was sending a team to her Houston, Texas hometown to help with relief efforts. A donation drive organized by Houston Texans NFL star J.J. Watt had reached $10 million in pledges from celebrities and ordinary people by Thursday, and singer Solange Knowles, Beyonce’s sister, announced benefit concerts in Boston and New York for September and October. A tearful Cyrus, 24, announced a $500,000 contribution in an emotional appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” “It just really makes me just really upset... I go home to my seven dogs and if I didn’t have that anymore, it would just be really hard. So I am really happy to help in any way I can. And I hope people understand and can put themselves in those people’s shoes,” Cyrus said. Some 779,000 Texans have been

ordered to evacuate their homes and another 980,000 fled voluntarily amid concerns on Thursday that swollen reservoirs and rivers could bring new flooding. Harvey roared ashore late last week as the most powerful hurricane to hit Texas in a half-century but has now been downgraded to a tropical depression. “Gravity” star Bullock, and DiCaprio’s foundation said this week they will each contribute $1 million to organizations helping people recover from the devastating floods. Beyonce, one of Houston’s bestknown celebrities, launched BeyGOOD Houston on her website. A statement said a team from her BeyGOOD philanthropic foundation was headed to the city to help with relief efforts, and the website asked fans to make donations to two local groups working there. The “Lemonade” singer, who now lives in Los Angeles, has not said whether she is making a personal donation, but her pastor Rudy Rasmus said she tends to keep her charitable efforts quiet. (rtr)

The Hogwarts Experience was launched on the fan website Pottermore.com on Friday to coincide with the Sept. 1 date when 11 yearold orphan Potter first started at Hogwarts school in J.K. Rowling’s 1997 book “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” While Hogwarts School has been created many times for mov-

ies, in art work and even in theme parks, the free digital experience allows fans to fly through the exterior of the castle, the forbidden forest including Hagrid’s hut, and the quidditch pitch. “This new feature on our website marks the first time fans will have the opportunity to explore the famous wizarding

school any time, any place and at their own pace,” Henriette Stuart-Reckling, global digital director for Pottermore, said in a statement. Rowling’s seven Harry Potter books have sold more than 400 million copies worldwide and were made into eight films that grossed $7 billion. (rtr)

Molotov cocktail thrown at Myanmar embassy in Indonesia

JAKARTA - A molotov cocktail was thrown at Myanmar embassy in Indonesian capital of Jakarta in the early hours on Sunday, Jakarta police said, causing a small fire. This comes amid mounting anger in the Southeast Asian nation, home to the world’s biggest Muslim population, over violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. A police officer patrolling a street behind the embassy spotted a fire on the second floor of the building at around 0235 AM Jakarta time (GMT+7) and alerted the police officers guarding the front gate of the embassy, according to a statement by Jakarta police on Sunday. After the fire was extinguished, police found a shattered beer bottle with a wick attached to it, the statement said, adding that the unknown perpetrator is suspected to have driven away from the scene in an MPV car. Jakarta police is currently investigating the incident, said spokesman Argo Yuwono. The police is

yet to find out the motive behind the attack. A group of activists on Saturday held a protest at the embassy calling Nobel Prize Committee to withdraw Nobel Prize from Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, state news agency Antara wrote. Protests continued on Sunday in Jakarta’s city central, with dozens of people under Islamic groups and activist groups calling Indonesian government to be actively involved in solving the human rights violation against the Rohingya community. The treatment of Buddhistmajority Myanmar’s roughly 1.1

million Muslim Rohingya is the biggest challenge facing leader Aung San Suu Kyi, accused by Western critics of not speaking out for the minority that has long complained of persecution. Aid agencies estimate about 73,000 Rohingya have fled into neighbouring Bangladesh from Myanmar since violence erupted last week. Myanmar urged Muslims in the troubled northwest to cooperate in the search for insurgents, whose coordinated attacks on security posts and an army crackdown have led to one of the deadliest bouts of violence to engulf the Rohingya community

in decades. Aid agencies estimate about 73,000 Rohingya have fled into neighbouring Bangladesh from Myanmar since violence erupted last week, Vivian Tan, regional spokeswoman for U.N. refugee agency UNHCR, told Reuters on Sunday. Hundreds more refugees on Sunday walked through rice paddies from the Naf river separating the two countries into Bangladesh, straining scarce resources of aid groups and local communities already helping tens of thousands. The clashes and military counteroffensive have killed nearly 400 people during the past week. The treatment of Buddhistmajority Myanmar’s roughly 1.1 million Muslim Rohingya is the biggest challenge facing leader

Aung San Suu Kyi, accused by Western critics of not speaking out for the minority that has long complained of persecution. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that violence against Muslims amounted to genocide. It marks a dramatic escalation of a conflict that has simmered since October, when a smaller Rohingya attack on security posts prompted a military response dogged by allegations of rights abuses.
