Activist Rose McGowan claims drug case is attempt to silence her LOS ANGELES - Actress Rose McGowan, who has emerged as a prominent voice speaking out against sexual assault in Hollywood, said a months-old warrant for her arrest on drug possession charges was an attempt to silence her. McGowan is one of more than a dozen women who have accused movie producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault or sexual harassment. The felony drug charge stems from an investigation of personal belongings that tested positive for narcotics after being left behind on a United flight arriving at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia on Jan. 20, according to police. “Are they trying to silence me?” McGowan said on Twitter on Monday. “There is a warrant out for my arrest in Virginia. What a load of horseshit.” The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department said in a statement on Monday that on Feb. 1 it had issued the war-
rant for possession of a controlled substance. “The Airports Authority police have attempted to contact Ms. McGowan so she can appear in a Loudon County, Virginia, court to respond to the charge,” the statement said. McGowan, who on Twitter has accused Weinstein of sex assault, was linked publicly to him following reports by the New York Times and the New Yorker. She was the keynote speaker Friday at a women’s conference in Detroit, where she urged attendees to speak out on sex assault. McGowan, whose acting career included a featured role in the 1996 horror film “Scream,” also has tweeted regularly about the subject on Twitter with the hashtag #ROSEARMY. The Times reported that Weinstein, 65, had reached eight previously undisclosed settlements with women who accused him of sexual harassment and unwanted physical contact. (rtr)

Netflix suspends ‘House of Cards’ production after Spacey allegation
LOS ANGELES - Netflix Inc indefinitely halted production of political drama “House of Cards” on Tuesday following an allegation of sexual misconduct against series star Kevin Spacey.

Producer Media Rights Capital and Netflix “have decided to suspend production on House of Cards season six, until further notice, to give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew,” a statement said. A day earlier, Netflix had said the groundbreaking show about a ruthless political power couple would conclude with season six. Representatives for Spacey did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. On Sunday, “Star Trek: Discovery” actor Anthony Rapp told Buzzfeed that Spacey made an unwanted sexual advance toward him in 1986 when he was just 14 and Spacey was 26. Spacey, a two-
time Oscar winner who is now 58, said he did not recall the incident. But in a tweet he said that if he did behave as Rapp described then he apologized and it would have been due to “inappropriate drunken behavior.” Rapp told BuzzFeed he felt compelled to come forward after dozens of women recently accused movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and several other Hollywood figures of sexual assault and sexual harassment. Weinstein has denied having non-consensual sex with anyone. Spacey’s apology sparked a backlash because he also used the statement to come out as a gay man. Many social media users saw it as a damaging conflation of sexual misconduct and being gay.
On Monday, Netflix and MRC called the allegation against Spacey “deeply troubling.” “House of Cards” became Netflix’s defining show when it launched in 2013, upending traditional television viewership by making all episodes of each season available online at the same time. Earlier on Tuesday, the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences said it was revoking a planned award for Spacey that he had been due to receive in New York on Nov. 20. Spacey was to have received the 2017 International Emmy Founders Award, but the Academy said in a statement that “in light of recent events it will not honor Kevin Spacey” as planned. (rtr)

Sayfullo Saipov, the suspect in the New York City truck attack, is seen in this courtroom sketch appearing in Manhattan federal courtroom in a wheelchair in New York, NY, U.S., November 1, 2017.
Trump calls for death penalty for Uzbek man charged in NY attack
NEW YORK - U.S. President Donald Trump called for the death penalty on Wednesday for an Uzbek immigrant accused of plowing a truck down a New York City bike path, killing eight people, describing the man as a “terrorist.” Sayfullo Saipov, 29, who was hospitalized after he was shot by a police officer and arrested, told investigators he had been inspired by watching Islamic State videos and began planning Tuesday’s attack a year ago, according to a criminal complaint filed against him on Wednesday. “NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room. He killed 8 people, badly
injured 12. SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY!” Trump tweeted. Saipov was charged with one count of providing material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization, specifically Islamic State, and one count of violence and destruction of motor vehicles causing the deaths of eight people. Manhattan acting U.S. Attorney Joon Kim said the first count car-
ries a maximum penalty of life in prison, while the second would make Saipov eligible for capital punishment if convicted, if the government chose to seek the death penalty. Additional or different charges could be brought later in an indictment, Kim said. Vehicle assaults similar to the New York attack took place in Spain in August and in France and Germany last year, claiming dozens of lives. Saipov confessed to authorities that he made a trial run with a rental truck on Oct. 22 to practice turning the vehicle and “stated that he felt
good about what he had done” after the attack, the complaint said. The 10-page charging document said Saipov waived his rights to remain silent and avoid selfincrimination in agreeing to speak to investigators without an attorney present from his bed at Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan. The complaint said Saipov had requested permission to display the flag of the Islamic State militant group in his hospital room. It said he was particularly motivated by seeing a video in which Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who led the
campaign by Islamic State - also known as ISIS - to seize territory for a self-proclaimed caliphate within Iraq and Syria, exhorted Muslims in the United States and elsewhere to support the group’s cause. Continued to page 6
