O.J. Simpson freed on parole - AP, citing Nevada prison official NEVADA - Onetime “Trial of the Century” defendant O.J. Simpson was released early on Sunday from the Nevada prison where he had been held since 2008 for a botched armed robbery at a Las Vegas casino hotel, the Associated Press reported. The AP cited a Nevada prison official as having confirmed Simpson’s release. No details on Simpson’s whereabouts or destination were reported, and authorities could not be reached to verify the report. Simpson, 70, won his freedom from a Nevada parole board in July after nine years behind bars, at a hearing that did not take into account his 1990s trial for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and a friend, Ron Goldman. He reportedly left prison shortly after midnight local time. Simpson, a former pro football star turned actor and TV pitchman, was found not guilty in 1995 following his sensational, 13-month trial in Los Angeles, which was televised live daily, transfixing much of the country. A civil court jury subsequently found him liable for the deaths and ordered him to pay $33.5 million in damages to the victims’ families, a judgment that remains largely
unpaid. Simpson’s ultimate destination remains unclear. He told parole board members he hopes to move to Florida, where he has friends and family, a plan that must be approved by probation authorities there. Florida corrections officials say they had not received a parole transfer request for Simpson and had not been contacted by their counterparts in Nevada. Simpson is a native of California, born in San Francisco, and played his final years as a pro football player for that city’s team, the 49ers. He lived in Los Angeles at the time of the murders. But California corrections officials say he has not filed papers to live in that state either. At his parole hearing, Simpson, known during his football career as the “Juice”, said he was ready to spend time with his children and friends outside prison and could handle the public attention he would get. Among reasons the commissioners gave for their decision was that Simpson had complied with prison rules during his incarceration, had no prior criminal convictions and posed a minimal safety risk to the public. Beyonce remixes Latin hit ‘Mi Gente’ to aid disaster relief efforts Beyonce
LOS ANGELES - Beyonce has released a new single and video to help with relief efforts following the recent natural disasters in the Caribbean and Mexico. “Mi Gente (My People),” a remix of the Latin hit by J. Balvin and Willy William, marks the R&B singer’s first new music since giving birth to twins in June. “I am donating my proceeds from this song to hurricane relief charities for Puerto Rico, Mexico and the other affected Caribbean islands,” Beyonce said on her Instagram page on Thursday. “We’re heartbroken by the hurricanes and earthquakes that have devastated families around the world. There are many ways to help,” she added in a message on her official website, where she
directed followers to a number of disaster relief organizations. Hurricane Maria, the most powerful storm to hit Puerto Rico in nearly 90 years, has killed at least 16 people on the island and more than 30 across the Caribbean. In Puerto Rico, most of the island’s 3.4 million residents have been 10 days without power and residents have complained about the slowness of official U.S. recovery efforts. The original Spanish-language “Mi Gente,” released in June, has been a No. 1 hit in much of South America and in many European
nations, and has been viewed 893 million times on YouTube. The remix by Beyonce, featuring home videos of ordinary people dancing, is expected to push sales higher and by Friday had already been viewed more than 1.8 million times.Beyonce also lent her support to relief efforts in her home town of Houston, Texas, sending a taped message to a charity telethon earlier in September that raised more than $44 million for the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. “Natural disasters don’t discriminate. They don’t see if you’re an immigrant, black or white, Hispanic or Asian, Jewish or Muslim, wealthy or poor ... we’re all in this together,” she said at the time. (rtr)

History of Mount Agung eruption in 1963
Eruption occurred when Eka Dasa Rudra was going on at Besakih
MOUNT Agung last erupted in 1963. At that time, many people experienced the impacts of Mount Agung eruption. Now, they are faced again with similar situation and the villages within disaster-prone areas III, II and I have evacuated. However, currently the Mount Agung remains in warning status and is waiting for eruption. At that time, the residents becoming the eruption victims of the highest mountain in Bali reached hundreds of people. Besides, Besakih Temple was still organizing Eka Dasa Rudra or centennial ritual. Live witness of the Mount Agung eruption in 1963, Jro Mangku Sueca, 75, said that at that time Besakih residents were still doing activities as usual when the mountain erupted. He said that at that time there was no sophisticated device as we see today. Today, prior to the eruption, people have been instructed to evacuate in
order to anticipate the occurrence of casualties. “At that time, people are not as panicky as they are now because there were no sophisticated devices as used today, so they did not know if Mount Agung would erupt,” he said. This priest of Penataran Agung Temple added that when Mount
Agung erupted in 1963, the Eka Dasa Rudra ritual was still going on at Penataran Agung Temple where the eruption occurred early morning. At that time, Besakih residents were still busy paying devotional works at Penataran Agung. Although the mountain already erupted, the community, especially that of Besakih,
were still working. According to Jro Mangku Sueca, at that time Besakih was hit by the rain of ash, sand and stones. Customary clothes of the pilgrims saying prayers at that time were showered by ash rain. The black ashes afflicting their clothes could not be cleaned though having been washed. In the meantime, if the skin is hit, it will be hot and itching because the ashes are still hot. Then, meru shrines at the temple were entirely covered with ashes so they were not visible. Nevertheless, it did not cause temples or meru shrines to be damaged.
“When the ritual would be closed, then Besakih residents flocked to evacuate. Prior to evacuating, residents remained to pay devotional works (ngaturang ngayah) and said prayers,” explained Jro Mangku Sueca.
