WELLINGTON — They may not have lost themselves in the music or the moment but a judge and nine lawyers in a New Zealand courtroom did listen politely to Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” as a copyright trial involving the country’s ruling political party began Monday.
The Detroit-based music publishers for Eminem are suing New Zealand’s conservative National Party, alleging the soundtrack for a 2014 election campaign ad copied the rapper’s acclaimed 2002 song. Titled “Eminem Esque,” the track has the familiar urgent, pulsing beat of the original. The party has previously said it purchased the track through an Australianbased supplier and doesn’t believe it has infringed anyone’s copyright. In 2014, when the case was filed, lawmaker Steven Joyce said he thought the use of the song was “pretty legal,” and that Eminem’s team “are just having a crack and a bit of an eye for the main chance because it’s an election campaign.” That response was widely ridiculed, including by comedian John Oliver on his show “Last Week Tonight.” “Pretty legal? That’s not a concept
that exists. That’s like being sort-of dead,” Oliver joked on the show. Spokespeople for both Joyce and the National Party said Monday they wouldn’t be commenting while the case was before the court. Garry Williams, the lawyer for Eminem’s music publishers Eight Mile Style, told the High Court in Wellington that the National Party had wanted a song that was edgy and modern but showed the party was dependable. He said the music fared better with focus groups than a classical piece. He quoted from National Party emails, including one in which the song is described as an Eminem “sound-alike” and another in which an agent for the party wrote “I guess the question we’re asking, if everyone thinks it’s Eminem, and it’s listed as Eminem Esque, how can we be confident that Eminem doesn’t say we’re
ripping him off?” Williams said the emails showed it was “utterly clear” the party knew it was using a copyrighted song. Speaking outside the court, Joel Martin, a spokesman for Eminem’s music publishers, said he was surprised the two sides hadn’t settled and that going to trial against an entity like a governing political party was unusual and extraordinary. “The bottom line is we would never have permitted the use of the song in any political advertisement,” he said. Martin said the publishers are seeking both a cash settlement for an undisclosed amount and an acknowledgement by the court that the National Party breached copyright. He said that by pursuing the case, they are showing they take copyright infringement around the world seriously. (ap)
Tokyo jeweler offers gold Darth Vader masks for $1.4 million
TOKYO — “Star Wars” fans with deep pockets might consider it a golden opportunity. A Tokyo jewelry store is offering life-size Darth Vader masks made of 24-karat gold at a hefty price of 154 million yen ($1.4 million) to mark the 40th anniversary of the release of the first “Star Wars” movie. The creation measures 26.5 centimeters (10.4 inches) wide and 30 centimeters (11.8 inches) high. The Ginza Tanaka store says the masks are not designed for wearing — at about 15 kilograms (33 pounds), they would be too
heavy, and they have no opening for a head. While the masks are its most expensive “Star Wars” memorabilia, the jeweler has made pricier products. In 2013, a gold Disneythemed Christmas tree was priced at 500 million yen ($4.5 million). Marketing manager Hirotsugu Tsuchiya said it took 10 goldsmiths three months to mold and assemble the prototype. “The most difficult aspect was that each section of the mask was created by a different gold craftsman and then assembled to make one Darth Vader mask,” Tsuchiya
said. Orders for the mask can be made at its main store in the glitzy Ginza shopping area where the prototype is on display. Customers will have to wait three months after ordering. For those looking for less expensive options, gold coins engraved with Yoda or Luke Skywalker will also be available starting at 132,300 yen ($1,200). They will go on sale Thursday, which is May 4, celebrated by some fans as “Star Wars” day because “May the fourth” evokes the film’s iconic line, “May the force be with you.” (ap)

NEW YORK - Labor unions and immigrant advocacy groups will lead May Day rallies in cities across the United States on Monday, with organizers expecting larger-than-usual turnouts to protest the immigration policies of President Donald Trump. The demonstrations could be the largest by immigrants since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, activists say, and some immigrant-run businesses plan to shut down for some or all of the day to protest the administration’s crackdown on immigrants living in the country illegally. “To me, it’s offensive the policies this president is trying to implement,” said Jaime Contreras, vice president of the Service Employees International Union’s 32BJ affiliate, which represents cleaners and other property service workers in 11 states.
“It’s a nation of immigrants, and separating immigrant families because of their immigration status, it goes against what we love about this wonderful country.” May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, has typically been a quieter affair in the United States than in Europe, where it is a public holiday in many countries. In New York City, immigrant-run convenience stores and taxi services in upper Manhattan will close during the morning rush hour between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., in a protest
reminiscent of those staged on “A Day Without Immigrants.” At lunchtime, fast-food workers will join elected officials at a rally outside a McDonald’s restaurant in midtown Manhattan, calling for more predictable work schedules. In the early evening, organizers expect thousands of demonstrators to gather at a rally in Manhattan’s Foley Square for musical performances and speeches by union leaders and immigrants living in the country illegally. In Los Angeles, organizers expect tens of thousands of people to gather in the morning at MacArthur Park before marching downtown to a rally before City Hall. Heightened precautions were also
in place in Seattle, where officials were on the lookout for incendiary devices and gun-carrying protesters after a January shooting outside a political event and an incident during May Day 2016 when a protester threw an unlit Molotov cocktail at police. Some Trump supporters said they would also turn out on May Day. Activist Joey Gibson said he and other conservatives will travel to Seattle to defend against what he described as communist and antifascist groups who have in the past faced off with police in the evening, after the conclusion of the usually peaceful daytime marches. “We’re going to go down there to help build courage for other people, especially conservatives,” Gibson said.
England Revellers in the English university city of Oxford took part in the annual May Morning festival on Monday an event famous for its centuries-old cultural traditions, as well as some rowdier modern ones. The festival features traditional music and dancing and frequently attracts crowds in the tens of thousands.
