Adele’s ‘25’ continues reign atop Billboard 200 chart
LOS ANGELES - British singer Adele once again kept her reign at the top of the weekly U.S. Billboard 200 album chart on Monday, holding off albums by Rihanna and Justin Bieber. Adele’s “25, the top-selling album of 2015, notched another 100,000 units last week in album and song sales and streaming activity, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan. Her album has sold more than 8.3 million copies in the United States since its November release
and has spent ten non-consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. The singer last week also swept the BRIT Awards, the top music honors in Britain, with four wins including album of the year. R&B singer Rihanna’s latest album “Anti” climbed one spot
to No. 2 with 80,000 units sold, while Canadian pop star Bieber’s “Purpose” dropped one spot to No. 3 with 63,000 units sold. Rapper Yo Gotti’s “Art of Hustle” at No. 4 was the only new entry to debut in the top ten of the Billboard 200 chart this week. On the Digital Songs chart, which measures online song sales, Rihanna’s steamy duet with Drake on “Work” climbed one spot to No. 1 with 169,000 copies sold. (rtr)
LOS ANGELES - Comedian Chris Rock launched his return stint as Oscar host on Sunday by immediately and unabashedly confronting the racially charged elephant in the room - the furor over the all-white field of performers nominated for Hollywood’s highest honors. In an opening monologue peppered with biting commentary about what he described as “sorority”-style discrimination pervading the film industry, Rock set the stage for a night of running gags that repeatedly returned to themes of racial politics. In doing so, he transformed a glittering awards show long known for self-reverential pomp into a 3 1/2-hour live ABC telecast punctuated by withering satire riffing on issues of inclusion and diversity raised by the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite social media campaign and the Black Lives Matter movement. But the issue of race was just one element that made the 88th edition of the Academy Awards likely to go down as one of the most socially conscious shows in Oscar history. Messages ranged from Vice President Joe Biden’s special appearance urging a stand against sexual violence on college campuses to best actor winner Leonardo DiCaprio’s impassioned appeal to take care of the planet. The difference in tone was evident from the start. Strolling on stage in a white dinner jacket and bow tie, Rock welcomed the audience to a show “otherwise known as the white People’s Choice awards,” adding, “You realize if they nominated hosts, I wouldn’t even get this job.” From that moment on, it was clear Rock would be pulling no punches, and that his no-holds-barred message could help the film Academy come to grips with its diversity problem. Boston Globe uncovered a massive scandal of child molestation in the city’s archdiocese. The Osservatore Romano said the film did not take a hostile position against the Church. It gives “a voice to the shock and profound pain of the faithful who
confront the discovery of this horrible reality”, said an opinion piece by columnist Lucetta Scaraffia. “It’s by now clear that in the Church too many were worried about the image of the institution and not the gravity of the act.”

GIANYAR - When Ubud was first introduced to foreign travelers, it offered an exotic landscape. It had a unique religious lifestyle that could be seen in the rituals and arts practiced by people here. Armed with the marketing techniques of the late Tjokorda Gede Agung Sukawati, local people were able to accelerate the growth of tourism in this region. The rapid development of tourism in Ubud created a tourism village. Tourism supporting facilities, from hotels, bungalows, restaurants, and art shops to bars offering premiere services continued to increase. The creation of such facilities seems to have been left to mushroom without any clear nor firm government restrictions. The face of Ubud has significantly changed as a result of such conditions. For instance, many road-side buildings in Ubud predominantly reflect modern architecture with only a handful that use Balinese architectural components. Of course, this is very much deplored given that Ubud’s popularity is based on the concept of cultural tourism. Ubud... continued on page 2
