‘Spotlight’ takes top Academy Award, #OscarsSoWhite other big winner

LOS ANGELES - Catholic Church abuse movie “Spotlight” was named best picture, the top award at Sunday’s Oscars ceremony, after a night peppered with pointed punchlines from host Chris Rock about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy that has dominated the industry. In a ceremony where no single movie commanded attention, Mexico’s Alejandro Inarritu nabbed the best directing Oscar for “The Revenant”, becoming the first filmmaker in more than 60 years to win backto-back Academy Awards. Inarritu won in 2015 for “Birdman.” “The Revenant” went into Sunday’s ceremony with a leading 12 nominations, and was among four movies believed to have the best chances for best picture after it won Golden Globe and BAFTA trophies. The ambitious 20th Century Fox Pioneer-era tale, shot in sub-zero temperatures, also brought a first Oscar win for its star Leonardo DiCaprio, who got a standing ovation from the A-list Hollywood audience. “I do not take tonight for granted,” DiCaprio said, taking the op-

portunity in his acceptance speech to urge action on climate change. Yet voters in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chose Open Road Films’ “Spotlight,” which traces the Boston Globe’s 2003 Pulitzer Prize winning investigation of child sex abuse by Catholic priests, for best picture. The movie also won best original screenplay. “This film gave a voice to survivors, and this Oscar amplifies that voice, which we hope can become a choir that will resonate all the way to the Vatican,” said producer Michael Sugar. Rising star Brie Larson, 26, took home the statuette for best actress for her role as an abducted young woman in indie movie “Room,” adding to her armful of trophies from other award shows. (rtr)

Online applicationbased transport services Await decision

Denpasar - Issues related to online application-based transportation services arose during the Governor of Bali’s open house, that took place at the Wantilan Hall of the Bali Parliamentary Building on Saturday (Feb. 27). At first, Chief of the Rental Transport Association, Nengah Wirayasa, objected to the suspension of GrabCar’s operations. This online application-based transport service from Malaysia not only benefits rental vehicle drivers like him, he said, but also contributes to the development of the rental vehicle business in general in terms of reasonable profit sharing. “So, we hope that the Governor and Deputy Governor will allow us to continue working with the GrabCar online application as it allows us to earn money to support our families. If we have engaged in some practice that has adverse effects, we are ready to discuss the matter to see how we can fix it” said Wirayasa.

50 shades of dreck? Steamy “Grey” film tops Razzies as Hollywood’s worst LOS ANGELES - The erotic box office hit “Fifty Shades of Grey” led the pack on Saturday for the annual Razzie Awards, “honoring” Hollywood’s worst films, while “Rocky” star Sylvester Stallone punched his way to a special Redeemer award for his Oscar-nominated turn in “Creed.” “Fifty Shades of Grey,” based on the best-selling E.L. James novels, dominated the tongue-in-cheek awards announced annually on the eve of the Oscars ceremony. Stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson took their whacks for worst actor and actress, as well as IBP/net worst screen combo. tied with sci-fi adventure “Fantastic Four” as worst film. Stallone, 69, who is seen as an Oscar front-runner on Sunday for reprising his iconic role as Rocky Balboa in “Creed,” won the Razzie Redeemer Award, going from an “all-time Razzie champ to 2015 award contender.” Stallone was not alone in being lauded by both the Razzies and the Oscars in the course of a single weekend. He was joined by Eddie Redmayne, who was named worst supporting actor for the scifi film “Jupiter Ascending.” Redmayne who won the best actor Oscar last year, is Oscar-nominated again on Sunday for “The Danish Girl.” “Fantastic Four” was also dubbed the year’s worst remake, rip-off or sequel,

while Josh Trank copped the worst director prize. “Big Bang Theory” star Kaley Cuoco took worst supporting actress for her roles in both “Alvin and the Chipmunks 4: Road Chip” and “The Wedding Ringer.” The 36th Razzie nominees and winners are selected by 943 voting Razzie members in 48 states and more than 20 foreign countries. Anyone can sign up to vote, with memberships starting at $40. Winners, if they choose to accept, are given a handcrafted, golf-ball-sized raspberry mounted atop a mangled reel of Super 8 film. Spray-painted gold, it is said to have an estimated street value of $4.97. But that, of course, doesn’t account for its potential value on eBay. (rtr)

DENPASAR - The Depasar district of Bali sentenced Margariet Megawe to lifes imprisonment for murdering her six year old adopted child, Engeline. “The suspect was found guilty of premeditated murder, abusing and discriminating against child,” the presiding judge Edward Harris Sinaga said here on Monday. The sentenced was the same as demanded earlier by the team of public prosecutors. Margariets lawyer Hotma Sitompul said the
