‘Spotlight’ and diversity winners at SAG Awards
Report counts some 2,300 journalists killed in past 25 years Page 6
LOS ANGELES - “Spotlight,” a drama about sexual abuse in the Catholic church, landed the top prize on Saturday at the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards that also saw black actors score major wins. The awards, seen as a bellwether of the all-important Academy Awards, were being closely watched as they were taking place amid a controversy over the lack of diversity in this year’s list of Oscar nominees. “Spotlight” took the prize for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture, the SAG equivalent of an Oscar. It bested “Beasts of No Nation,” a drama about a child soldier, “The Big Short,” about the subprime mortgage crisis, “Straight Outta Compton,” a biopic about the N.W.A rap group, and “Trumbo,” about the life of acclaimed screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who was the target of a witch hunt during the McCarthy era. In the acting honors, Leonardo DiCaprio won the best actor award for his portrayal of fur trapper Hugh Glass in the revenge thriller “The Revenant.” DiCaprio, 41, an Oscar favorite for the gritty survival story, beat competition from Bryan Cranston
(Trumbo), Johnny Depp (Black Mass), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl). In the best actress category, Brie Larson won for “Room,” in which she plays a kidnapped young woman living in captivity with her son. But perhaps most notable at the star-studded ceremony were the number of black actors honored as Hollywood reels from a fierce backlash over the lack of diversity in the Oscar nominations. Idris Elba scooped two awards, one for best supporting actor for Netflix’s “Beasts of No Nation,” and one for best actor in a TV series for his role as a detective in the British crime drama “Luther.” “Welcome to diverse TV,” joked
Elba, who was passed over for an Oscar nomination, as he presented an award during the ceremony at Los Angeles’s Shrine Auditorium. Uzo Aduba took home the award for outstanding actress in a comedy series for her role as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in Netflix’s prison comedy-drama “Orange is the New Black.” The TV series also won for the second consecutive year for best comedy ensemble. “Look at this stage, this is what we talk about when we talk about diversity -- different race, color, creed, sexual orientation,” actress Laura Prepon, who plays Alex Vause in the series, told the audience, referring to the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. Viola Davis meanwhile won best actress for legal drama series “How
NEW YORK - No longer part of squeaky clean One Direction, Zayn Malik on Friday reintroduced himself as a solo artist -- sexy with an urban vibe. The former boy band star, now simply calling himself Zayn, announced his first solo album, “Mind of Mine,” which will come out on March 25, and released its first single, “Pillowtalk.” A far cry from the innocent tracks of One Direction, “Pillowtalk” features sex, profanity and a racy video in which Zayn dances intimately with model Gigi Hadid in states of undress. Zayn promises in the song to “be in bed all day,” taking a lover to “a place that is so pure, so dirty and raw.” “It’s our paradise and it’s our war zone,” he sings. In a striking lyrical touch

for one of the most prominent Muslims in Western entertainment, Zayn uses religious imagery to further the song’s theme. “Pillowtalk -- my enemy, my Allah,” he sings. The 23-year-old Briton recorded the album largely in Los Angeles with the producer Malay, who is best known for his work with Frank Ocean. In a likely sign of Malay’s influence, the music on “Pillowtalk” is noticeably inspired by urban American R&B, moving away from the bubblegum pop of One Direction. The album will come out exactly one year after Malik left One Direction, the band that emerged from “The X Factor” television contest in 2010 to become one of the world’s best-selling acts. teenagers, Zayn said in an interview just ahead of the release of “Pillowtalk” that he had long been unhappy in One Direction. “I never really wanted to be there in the band,” he told Zane Lowe, the head DJ for Apple’s Beats 1 radio. “I just gave it a go because it was there at the time and then when I realized the direction we were going in -- pardon the pun -- with the music, I instantly realized it wasn’t for me,” he said. “I couldn’t put my input in, I couldn’t give my opinion on this or that, because it didn’t fit,” he said. Zayn’s former band mates in November released a first album without him, “Made in the A.M.,” and went on an indefinite hiatus, with member Louis Tomlinson last week becoming a father. (afp)

People held demonstration during a meeting to discuss the environmental impact analysis—EIA (Amdal) document, environmental management plan (RKL) and environmental monitoring plan (RPL) associated with the Benoa Bay reclamation plan on Friday.
THE MEETING to discuss the environmental impact analysis— EIA (Amdal) document, environmental management plan (RKL) and environmental monitoring plan (RPL) associated with the Benoa Bay reclamation plan, went on for about ten hours on Januray 29th at Wiswa Sabha, the Governor’s Office. The meeting started at 08:30 with an introduction of the Central Audit Commission for the EIA, the initiator of the project: high-ranking official of PT Tirta Wahana Bali International (TWBI) along with the consultants and its team of experts. The introduction lasted 2.5 hours during which time none of the community representatives that were invite to the meeting spoke. Chairman of the Central Audit Commission for the EIA Prof. Dr. San Afri Awang who led the meeting said that the meeting was meant to be the part of the process most open to the public and that input from the public was therefor very important. San Afri was often seen reading a list of participants that would get the opportunity to speak. Some of the participants that were announced to be heard from were: Deputy Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives represented, Nyoman Sugawa Korry along with Commission III, Team 9 of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI), Bali senators (DPD), Bali Environment Agency (BLH), and Head
of the Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda). San Afri then requested the meeting to be suspended and was resumed at 13:30. However, some community leaders requested to be given a chance to speak. The first opportunity to speak was given Wayan Loka, a representative of Serangan customary village. He explained that he was a victim of Serangan Island and that even without the Benoa Bay reclamation plan, he already feels the traffic congestion on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai. “This traffic will definitely become far worse if it is true that there is a plan to bring in 200,000 new workers for the project,” he said. In terms of the socio-cultural aspects of the project, Balinese people believe that Benoa Bay is a sacred area. “Let nature be as it is. If you have some capital, it is better to build on Serangan Island,” he said. Chief of Kuta customary village, Wayan Suarsa, asserted that 17 subtidal mounds (muntig) at Benoa Bay are not islands. They are never overgrown with mangroves, but there is energy of life in the area. What happens, he asked, if the sub-tidal mounds and sacred areas are backfilled? People often perform religious rituals like pakelem at the location, he explained. “The community of Kuta customary village has decided to reject the reclamation plan,” he said.
