SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea named a brother-in-law of leader Kim Jong-il to a powerful military post on Monday and sacked its premier in moves seen as consolidating Kim’s grip on power and paving the way for his youngest son to succeed him.

Kim attended a rare session of the rubberstamp parliament, the Supreme People’s Assembly, to personally name Jang Song-thaek as vice chairman of the National Defense Commission, the North’s KCNA

Bali News Garbage heaps result in protest of residents Semarapura (Bali Post)Waste problems in Klungkung Regency are very difficult to resolve. Now, such waste problems reap complaints from residents in the area of Banjarangkan, Klungkung, especially at the main route of the Banjarangkan, exactly near the office of Logistic Services (Bulog). They do not only spread stenches, chiefly during the rainy season as today, the presence of rubbish also affect quick proliferation of mosquitoes. It includes the Aedes aegypti mosquito causing the dengue fever (DF). “Yes, some local people had dengue fever (DF). Therefore, we hope relevant parties could handle the garbage heaps as soon as possible,? pointed out one of the residents of Banjarangkan, Anom, last Sunday (Jun 6). Even, two years ago, a toddler who resided around the garbage died of dengue fever. Local residents also claimed to have complained about the problems to related authorities. However, the discarded garbage on vacant land belonged to resident was just left without any treatment. Even, the piles of garbage have continued to grow each day since 15 years ago. He also lamented, one unit of garbage truck seconded to Banjarangkan Village through a national program empowerment (PNPM) was not used appropriately. Such semi truck was even neglected and not taken advantage accordingly. When asked for his confirmation, the Head of Banjarangkan Village, Wayan Suastika, justified that the waste transporter truck was not operated. He said it occurred because of the lack of operational budget considering PNPM only provided assistance in the form of one unit of car. ?There is no assistance in the form of funds. Meanwhile, to operate the truck of course needs officer and funds as well,? he said. (kmb20)

All sidewalk iron manholes at TSO stolen:

Many tourists black and blue due to falling into water gutter Amlapura (Bali Post)? A number of tourists visiting the Soekasada Oejoeng Park (TSO) Karangasem, last Sunday (Jun 6) in Amlapura, complained as the sidewalks at tourist object becoming heritage of Karangasem kingdom was hazardous. Because, almost all iron manholes covering the sidewalk were stolen. The loss of those covering irons caused the sidewalks surrounding the TSO that was covered by manholes to be hollow. It is very dangerous to pedestrians, either adults or children, especially when their eyes were not seeing the gaping hole in front. They can fall into the hole measuring 40 cm x 40 cm, into the adequately deep sewer. Meanwhile, a number of ornaments on the compound wall of TSO have been damaged. Allegedly, the deplorable destruction was performed by irresponsible perpetrators. Last year, a number of unknown people destroyed the statues in the TSO and triggered some other incidents. Presumably, the perpetrators concerned were not satisfied with the management of TSO. Today, TSO schedules a refurbishment again after the manager is chaired by former Head of Karangasem House and former legislator of Bali House, Nyoman Matal. Hundreds of sheltering trees like ylang-ylang, mango and woody trees are already high enough and the large ones will be cut down. Last Sunday, the trees cut down and used for firewood were stacked in the area of TSO.

Dismantling villa in Nusa Penida Justiciary team summoned by Klungkung House Semarapura (Bali Post)?

Bold step of Klungkung Regency Justiciary Team to dismantle the villa built in Nusa Penida by an investor from Sri Lanka, Basudeva, few months ago, in fact, remained to leave a problem. The owner persisted in appealing his objection to such dismantling and complaint to Klungkung House over the action of Justiciary Team. Representatives of the people then responded the complaint. They summoned the judiciary team for a coordinative meeting at the Klungkung House, last Monday (Jun 7). Head of Commission A, Klungkung House, Wayan Buda Parwata, when asked for his confirmation, last Sunday (June 6), justified the agenda of the summon to justiciary team. The call was made by the House to follow up the complaints delivered by villa owner (Basudeva). In his complaint, Basudeva also asked for more time in order he could make audience with the House. ?The concerned (Basudeva?ed) sent an official letter to the House. Therefore, we should follow up by calling the related agency related for a working meeting. At least, we could get the information about the actual condition from judiciary team before we also listened to the complaints directly from the owner of the villa,? said

Buda. In addition, the representative of Timuhun origin also stayed to see selective attitude of the team in disciplining the offenders of the Regional Regulation (Perda). It was also briefly questioned by the Head of Parliament, AA Gde Anom. ?The proof, there are many unlicensed villas and they violate the green belt but are not prosecuted. One of them is a cafe at Sengkiding area, Aan, Banjarangkan,? he added. Therefore, with the calling of justiciary team the legislators would like to know to what extent the justiciary team with public order officers (Satpol PP) had enforced the rules. Buda also mentioned, currently many villas were built in Klungkung Regency under the guise of residential house. As a

result, they did not propose any permits. Demolition of the villa belonged to Basudeva in Nusa Penida was done by justiciary team a few months ago. It was based on consideration that the villa development had no permits. Before performing the demolition, the judiciary team had formally written a letter to him begun with reprimand. After the third reprimand issued, the owner remained to ignore it so the justiciary team then performed the demolition. Meanwhile, several parties called by the legislators for a coordinative meeting, included the Deputy Regent, Tjok Agung, Head of Integrated Permit Services, the Legal Division and Satpol PP of Klungkung Regency. Bantas Kaja in rage

A Resident’s House Fenced Mangupura (Bali Post)-

Banjar Bantas Kaja officials of Sibang Gede Village, Abiansemal, fenced a resident’s house owned by Dewa Putu Arsana, last Sunday (6/ 6). The banjar officials stated that Arsana has been absent in communal duties (mebanjar) since a year ago. Besides Arsana’s, there are eight more that needed to be punished with pengrajegan (confiscation of goods in the house, red.). Confirmed after the fencing, Head of Banjar Kaja I Made Kandel stated, they are forced to do it because the

resident did not pay attention to the decisions in the banjar. Kandel mentioned, Arsana is one of the nine residents that are/going to be stopped from mebanjar at Banjar Bantas Kaja even their lands are certified. The nine residents were not active for a year in communal duties since a problem occurred. Because of that, Arsana was called many times for a banjar meeting to finish it. Last Saturday night (5/6), Arsana was called again for a meeting which attended also by Village officials, Head of Abiansemal Police Sector, and Abiansemal Sub

district Secretary. In the meeting, the village official asked the Banjar to delay the fencing but the banjar officials denied and very willing to fence Arsana’s house. More of it, Arsana did not even come to sign the banjar’s agreement. “We waited until the next morning, but Dewa didn’t come to the banjar. So we are forced to fence Dewa’s house,” Kandel explained. Meanwhile for Arsana’s house and eight others were given six days to finish the problem and sign the banjar’s agreement. If it’s not fulfilled, then the banjar will do the pengerajegan pun-

ishment to their houses. “The rest that are karang ayahan desa, are given one week to finish the problem by the village officials. If the deadline is not fulfilled too, then there’ll be more punishment,” Kandel declared. The turbulent has been going on since last year as the problem didn’t get to its end. It started with the nine residents wanting to let go of their status from Bantas Kaja lead by a Sibang Kaja Village official. The reason told was that their suggestions were never taken by the banjar officials..(ded)

Do not accept selfabused children, the mother reported the case to the Directorate of Reskrim Polda Bali. Information gathered in Bali Police Headquarters, Sunday (6 / 6) yesterday, a strong suspicion that the perpetrators who come from Banjar friend, Budakeling, Karangasem, had planned the action. Because, before the victim was raped, the offender seems to have provided something those allegedly anesthetic drugs. This is evident when seeing the victim; the offender immediately drops in the palms of the hands of the victim. Then, the victim’s hand pressed to his nose. A few minutes after the palm of the hand attached, the victim was unconscious and limp. Actors began to dismantle victims clothing until naked. ‘’This incident took place at 3:00 pm. previously, agents knocked on the victim and the victim’s bedroom door opened. Well, that’s when the drug was dripped into the hands of the victim, and then pasted into the victim’s nose,’’ said a source at Polda Bali yesterday. Managed to paralyze the victim, the perpetrator acted quickly. Victims are helpless and naked middle, making exhaustively suspect peaks. Pinned the victim and perpetrator were like husband and wife relationship ensued. Satisfied with what he did, the offender attempted to flee. Unfortunately, before the escape, the victim’s mother suddenly went into the victim’s room. Amazement, the mother, saw the perpetrator and the victim naked. ‘’When caught by her mother, the perpetrator was wearing panties (CD). Meanwhile, the victim was asleep in bed in a state of limp naked,’’ said the source who did not want his identity to be published. The mother tried to wake her son, but the victim looked limp. Now, knowing this, the victim’s mother would suspect that the perpetrator drugged before being raped the victim. Furious with the actor acts, rape cases are reported to the Bali Police. (Kmb21)

Japan ruling party names new leaders AP

TOKYO – Japan’s ruling party selected a fresh leadership lineup Monday, clearing the way for Prime Minister-elect Naoto Kan to name a new Cabinet and begin tackling a host of delicate issues left over after the abrupt resignation of his predecessor. Kan, who was elected prime minister in a parliamentary vote last week, will begin his tenure with a roster of new faces in the top party positions. But he was expected to retain most of the Cabinet of outgoing leader Yukio Hatoyama. Hatoyama stepped down last week after failing to keep a campaign promise to move a U.S. military base off the southern island of Okinawa. The move was sudden but not completely unexpected — with crucial elections in the upper house of parliament scheduled for next month, many in the party felt his plunging popularity would make him a major liability at the polls. Kan was to name his Cabinet and be formally sworn in by Emperor Akihito in a ceremony on Tuesday. The biggest change in Kan’s administration will be Yukio Edano, who

served as reform minister and will take over as the ruling Democratic Party’s secretary general. That post was previously held by the powerful but unpopular Ichiro Ozawa, who also announced his resignation last week, over a funding scandal. Ozawa has high disapproval ratings among the public, and he, too, was seen as baggage going into the elections. Named to the party’s other senior posts were Koichiro Genba, who takes over as head of its policy formulation panel, and Shinji Tarutoko, a rising star who challenged Kan for the party’s top spot in elections after Hatoyama resigned. Media reports said Kan was likely to keep Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada and Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa. The finance portfolio that Kan held in Hatoyama’s Cabinet was

expected to go to Senior Vice Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda. Kan on Sunday spoke by telephone with President Barack Obama and stressed the importance of his country’s alliance with Washington, while promising to implement an agreement to relocate Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, a controversial U.S. Marine base. Under an agreement signed last month between the two governments, the base is to be moved to a lesscrowded part of Okinawa, but Kan faces intense opposition from island residents who want it moved off Okinawa completely, as Hatoyama had promised. The relocation has already been stalled for years, but progress on the base is key to a larger plan to move 8,600 Marines from Okinawa to the U.S. territory of Guam by 2014. The transfer from Hatoyama to Kan has given a much-needed boost to the Democrats, who have lost steam after sweeping to power just nine months ago by toppling the Liberal Democratic Party that governed Japan for most of the post-World War II era.

Ex-premier’s diary sheds light BP sucking up half of oil leaking from Gulf well on Tiananmen protests AFP

BEIJING (AFP) – Former Chinese premier Li Peng acted on orders from late leader Deng Xiaoping to “shed some blood” when he sent in troops to end the Tiananmen protests, the publisher of Li’s purported diary said on Monday. Excerpts from the diary by Li, known as the “Butcher of Beijing”, have caused an Internet stir for shedding rare light on the decision-making leading up to the bloodshed on the square on the night of June 3-4, 1989. They show Li followed Deng’s orders in clearing Tiananmen Square after six weeks of unprecedented pro-democracy protests. “The diary clearly indicates that Deng Xiaoping had a major role... and that he wanted to use the military from the very beginning,” Bao Pu, whose Hong Kongbased New Century Press will publish the diary June 22, told AFP. “The diary doesn’t support the popular view that Deng came to a painful decision, that Deng was somehow misled,” Bao said, adding the memoirs appeared genuine. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people were killed in central Beijing when the military violently crushed the student-led pro-

tests. In the diaries, Li, who is 81 and reportedly in poor health, argues that the protests had to be extinguished to save the country from chaos. “The unrest now in Beijing is the biggest chaos since the nation was established,” Li writes in a June 1 excerpt seen from an Internet posting. “The loss of control in this situation has gone beyond the ‘Great Cultural Revolution’,” he said, referring to the 1966-1976 radical political campaigns triggered by late leader Mao Zedong. In the diary, Li seeks to mediate

a political solution to end the protests, while overseeing the covert massing of 25,000 troops in buildings around the square — “a force surrounding Tiananmen on all four sides”. He also regularly reports to Deng on the day-to-day updates, seeking approval for his moves. “Li participated in the decision-making throughout the process and he was also the one who carried out these decisions. This all came out very, very clear in details that we previously did not know,” Bao said. The diary echoed an account by Zhao Ziyang — who was ousted by Deng as Communist Party head for opposing the use of force — published posthumously last year, he said. Bao also published that account. The diary, covering April 15 to June 24 of 1989, was also consistent with the Tiananmen Papers, a set of leaked documents covering secretive Communist Party meetings, often led by Deng, ahead of June 4. Li was vilified for announcing the imposition of martial law in May 1989 and for outmanoeuvring the dovish Zhao. These latest memoirs looked unlikely to help Li shed his “Butcher of Beijing” nickname, said Bao, who is the son of Bao Tong, a former top aide to Zhao.

GRAND ISLE, Louisiana (AFP) – Engineers hoped Monday to make more headway in their bid to contain a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico after energy giant BP announced it was now capturing about half of the oil gushing from its ruptured well. Amid the largest environmental disaster in US history, BP’s chief executive Tony Hayward said a cap fitted on the leaking pipe a mile (1,600 meters) down on the sea bed appeared to be working. “As we speak, the containment cap is producing around 10,000 barrels of oil a day to the surface,” he told the BBC Sunday. The US official in charge of the government operation, Admiral Thad Allen, agreed with the estimate, but refused to be drawn on what percentage of the leaking oil it represented. BP said a new containment effort would be launched, involving feeding pipes into the leaking blow-out preventer that could siphon more oil. Hayward said the system could be ready by next week and, despite criticisms of his handling of the disaster, said he had the “absolute intention of seeing this through to the end.” Government scientists have estimated that up to 19,000 barrels a day could be spewing into the Gulf since the April 20 explosion sank the BPleased Deepwater Horizon rig just off the Louisiana coast.

“We’re not going to know how much oil is coming out until we’re able to optimize the production, and that’s what they’re doing right now,” Allen told ABC television. “They are slowly raising production. It was 6,000 a day before and it was 10,000 yesterday,” he told CNN. He warned that the Coast Guard and clean-up teams were fighting an “insidious enemy” as they battle to keep the oil from reaching the shores, amid fears Florida’s beaches could be badly hit with tar balls already washing up in Mississippi and Alabama.

Indian court convicts 7 in Bhopal gas tragedy BHOPAL, India – An Indian court Monday convicted seven former senior employees of Union Carbide’s Indian subsidiary of “death by negligence” for their roles in the Bhopal gas tragedy that left an estimated 15,000 people dead more than a quarter century ago in the world’s worst industrial disaster. The former employees, many of them in their 70s, were sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay fines of 100,000 rupees ($2,175) apiece. All seven were released on bail shortly after the verdict. The subsidiary, Union Carbide India Ltd., no longer exists but was convicted of the same charge and ordered to pay a fine of rupees 500,000 ($10,870). India’s Central Bureau of Investigation, the country’s top investigative agency, has said the plant had not been following proper safety procedures before the disaster. Large groups of survivors and relatives, along with rights activists, gathered in the city and chanted slogans saying the verdict was too little, too late. Early on Dec. 3, 1984, a pesticide plant run by Union Carbide leaked about 40 tons of deadly methyl isocyanate gas into the air in the city of Bhopal in central India, quickly killing about 4,000 people. The lingering effects of the poison raised the death toll to about 15,000 over the next few years, according to government estimates. Local activists insist the real numbers are almost twice that, and say the company and government have failed to clean up toxic chemicals at the plant, which closed after the accident. The verdicts, which were in a local court and are likely to be appealed, came as the case crawled through India’s notoriously slow and ineffective judicial system. The Central Bureau of Investigation had originally accused 12 defendants: eight senior Indian company officials; Warren Anderson, the head of Union Carbide Corp. at the time of the gas leak; the company itself and two subsidiary companies.

Stampede From page 1 “There were supposed to be only 8,000 tickets — they were all free,” he told AFP. Police said it was not immediately clear who had distributed the tickets and FIFA said that it was nothing to do with them. “Contrary to some media reports, FIFA had nothing to do with the ticketing of this game,” its said. While a number of FIFA officials were present at the game, all refused to talk to the media and there was no customary post-match press conference. Rich Mkhondo, spokesman for the Local Organising Commit-

Seven of the eight Indian company officials were convicted Monday. The other one has since died. Anderson and Union Carbide have never appeared in court proceedings. Union Carbide was bought by Dow Chemical Co. in 2001. Dow says the legal case was resolved in 1989 when Union Carbide settled with the Indian government for $470 million, and that all responsibility for the factory now rests with the government of the state of Madhya Pradesh, which now owns the site. Last July, the same court in Bhopal had issued a warrant for Anderson’s arrest and also ordered the Indian government to press Washington for the American’s extradition. The judge did not explain why Anderson or the American chemical company were not tried in absentia. Anderson was briefly detained immediately after the disaster, but he quickly left the country and now lives in New York. It was not immediately clear if the Indian government had begun to process the Bhopal court’s request. Extradition proceedings are usually mired in a complex tangle of legal paperwork and can take years to process. Investigators say the accident occurred when water entered a sealed tank containing the highly reactive gas, causing pressure in the tank to rise too high. Union Carbide Corp., an American chemical company, said the accident was an act of sabotage by a disgruntled employee who was never identified. It has denied the disaster was the result of lax safety standards or faulty plant design, as claimed by some activists. The Central Bureau of Investigation said the plant had not been following proper safety procedures. tee, also tried to brush off the episode and instead said the only concern remained over traffic. “Our only concern is that people should park their cars at home and not clog up the streets around the stadiums,” he told Talk Radio 702. The episode served as a sharp reminder of the challenges facing the tournament which begins on Friday when the hosts play Mexico and evoked ugly memories in South Africa. Forty-three people were killed in 2001 when ticketless fans tried to barge their way into the Soweto derby at Ellis Park, a stadium in Johannesburg which is one of the 10 venues for the monthlong tournament.

An Indian court was due June 7, 2010, to hand down verdicts on the Bhopal gas leak, an industrial accident 25 years ago in which tens of thousands of people died or suffered horrific health problems. A lethal plume of gas escaped from a storage tank at the Union Carbide pesticide factory in the early hours of December 3, 1984, killing thousands instantly in the world’s worst industrial disaster.

US asks for Israel to investigate wounded citizen JERUSALEM – A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv says it has asked Israel to investigate an incident where an American woman lost her eye during a pro-Palestinian demonstration. Kurt Hoyer said on Monday the embassy has asked for details “as

soon as possible.” Emily Henochowicz, a 21-year-old from Maryland, lost her left eye after being hit in the face by a tear gas canister Israeli policeman fired during a demonstration last week in Jerusalem. Israeli military spokesman Moshe Fintzy said the army was investigating

the matter and regretted if anyone was harmed. He said soldiers faced a violent protest. Rights groups accuse Israel of firing canisters directly at protesters. An American citizen was also badly wounded last year in a similar incident.

The parliament also sacked the country’s premier, who is considered the top economic official, and replaced him with Choe Yong-rim, a member of the old guard and another confidant of Kim’s family who has been in key economic posts. The dismissal of premier Kim Yongil is likely linked to a currency revaluation late last year that, according to some media reports, incited widespread public discontent. Kim, who suffered a stroke in 2008, missed the previous session of the Supreme People’s Assembly in April, which amended the country’s constitution to strengthen his power. Some analysts suggested Pyongyang might use the occasion to issue a rebuttal of sanctions imposed by the South over the sinking of the Cheonan corvette. However, there was no mention of any hardline response to the latest actions by

South Korea, which last week took the dispute to the U.N. Security Council, demanding that the North admit to the attack. The mounting antagonism between the two Koreas, which so far has remained rhetorical, has unnerved global investors, worried about armed conflict breaking out in a region home to the world’s second and third biggest economies. The South Korean and U.S. military are expected to stage a joint exercise later this month, postponed from this week, to test their readiness against aggression from the North. The South’s Defense Ministry declined to confirm a local media report that said the delay was to avoid irritating China, the North’s key ally and a Security Council permanent member, and win its crucial support in a vote to censure Pyongyang.

North Korea From page 1 two months came amid growing momentum in the international community to punish Pyongyang for the sinking of a South Korean navy corvette in March that killed 46 sailors. Jang, who had once fallen out of Kim’s favor but has since returned to his inner circle, is the husband of the leader’s sister, and is viewed as the key figure for ensuring a smooth transfer of power from Kim to one of his sons. “Jang would be the most trustworthy person to Kim who can establish the foundation for succession to Jongun,” said Park Young-ho of the Korea Institute for National Analysis. “This is a signal that they will be moving on existing power structures, no innovation or openness or reform.”

BIAK - National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia on Monday, June 7, 2010 reopened its Biak-Jayapura route after hiatus of more than two months since May 1 this year. A Garuda Boeing 737 aircraft serving the Jakarta-Makassar-BiakJayapura route landed at Frans Kaisiepo airport here on Monday and at 8.25 am East Indonesia Standard Time (WIT) took off again with hundreds of passengers on board headed to Jayapura’s Sentani airport. Contacted on Monday morning, Garuda’s Biak branch office general manager Rosyinah confirmed that the national flag carrier had resumed its Biak-Jayapura route on June 7, 2010. “The Biak-Jayapura route was reopened on Monday morning to meet a request from loyal Garuda

customers through the Provincial Legislative Assembly (DPRD) and Biak Numfor district administration,” Rosyinah said. Meanwhile, Biak Numfor district head Yusuf Melianus Maryen also confirmed that Garuda had resumed its Biak-Jayapura service on Monday after having discontinued it since last May 1. “As the head of Biak Numfor district government, I for one warmly welcome the reopening of Garuda’s Biak-Jayapura air service,” Melianus Maryen said. He said the reopening of Garuda’s daily air service between Biak and Jayapura was great help to the Biak district administration in solving one of inter-provincial transportation problems. Garuda reopened its BiakJayapura route four days after doing the same with Jakarta-MakassarAmbon route last Thursday, June 3,

2010. In her address to the welcoming crowd at Pattimura airport in Ambon, Garuda director Elisa Lumbuan Toruan, who set foot on the soil of Ambon for the first time, said service on Garuda flights to Ambon was quite different because passengers were provided with special magazines describing Maluku’s natural beauty, culture and traditions. “We provide the magazines containing accounts of Maluku’s history and culture as our contribution to the promotion of the region’s tourism potentials,” she said. She said Garuda’s vision was to help promote Indonesian hospitality and economy. Accordingly, it would this year open routes to all parts of the country, including Maluku. Toruan said Garuda was also planning to open a Denpasar-Ambon route next year to help increase the flow of tourists to Maluku.

Foreign tourists start coming to Jayapura for FDS Antara

JAYAPURA - Foreign tourists start arriving in Papua provincial city of Jayapura for Lake Sentani Festival (FDS) scheduled for June 19-23, 2010. In Kalkote village where the festival will be held, some 20 foreign tourists on Sunday were seen enjoying the natural beauty of Lake Sentani. “Some of them hire small boats of the local people to cross the lake and visit the surrounding villages,” said Nehemia Yoku, a local resident. Nehemia said some 20 tourists from various countries on Sunday came to the lake at Kalkote village and enjoyed its natural beauty.

He said many pavilions had been set up at the festival arena to exhibit various art works and home industrial products during the cultural event. Themed “Loving Culture for Our Future,” Lake Sentani Festival from June 19 to 23, 2010, will try to attract as many domestic and foreign tourists as possible. Jayapura district head Habel Melkias Suwae said here on Sunday that preparations had been made for this annual cultural festivity. He said this year’s event would be the third since its first one held in 2008, and will serve as a year-long gateway for the tourism industry in the Indonesian easternmost province, Papua.

In 2008, the Papua Tourism Office organized the first Lake Sentani Festival from July 16 to 19 in that year to support the annual Lembah Baliem Festival in Jayawijaya district. Since then, the LSF was held to protect the culture of Jayapura district, especially around Lake Sentani. Located some 75 meters above sea level and surrounded by beautiful hills, the 3.63-hectare Lake Sentani is a perfect place for fishing, swimming, canoeing, skiing, and other water sports. “No wonder, Lake Sentani Festival will serve as a year-long gateway for the tourism industry in Jayapura district specifically and in Papua province in general,” Habel Melkias Suwae said.

The accident took place Sunday in a remote village in Aceh province, Sumatra island, district chief Ibnu Hasyim said. “There were about 37 kids gathered together on a wire-cable suspension bridge when it collapsed and they fell into a river,” he told AFP. Twenty-five children were rescued with minor injuries but 12

others, all below the age of 12, were swept away in the strong currents. The children were watching a ritual ceremony to dispel misfortune after a measles outbreak in the area. “The adults were throwing offerings in the form of chickens into the river” when the bridge collapsed, the official said.

Rare Javan rhino found dead in Indonesia Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - The carcass of a critically endangered Javan rhino had been found in Indonesia, conservationists said Monday, bringing the the world’s scarcest mammal one step closer to extinction. The remains of the male rhino were found two weeks ago in Ujung Kulon National Park in West Java, home to the species’ last viable population of less than 50, experts said. Rhino Foundation of Indonesia head Widodo Ramono said the animal could have died during the rainy season around February to March. Its horn was intact, meaning it probably was not killed by poachers, he said. “There were no signs that it had been killed or poisoned. We suspect it could have died from an illness or, since it was partly submerged in water when it died, it

could have drowned,” he added. The Javan rhino is distinguished from African rhinos by its small size, single horn and loose skin folds. Rhino horns are used in traditional Chinese and Korean medicine although most Asian countries have banned the trade. Around 44 Javan rhinos are believed to live in Ujung Kulon, an oasis of wilderness on the western edge of one of the world’s most densely populated islands. Another four or so are found in Vietnam’s Cat Loc reserve, where a rhino was killed by poachers last month. No one knows the exact numbers but the results of a survey of the rhino population in Ujung Kulon are expected by the end of the week, Ramono said. “The survey’s almost completed. We’ve placed 60 cameratraps around the park and we’re now collating the data to verify the numbers,” he said.

DENPASAR — Implementation of the 32nd Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2010 is expected to be better or more qualified than the previous BAFs. Comfort, safety and sanitation need more attentions. On that account, the artists could display his artwork maximally, while the audience could appreciate it properly. Supporting facilities, including toilets should be kept clean. This was expressed by Governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika during a plenary meeting on the 32nd BAF, last Saturday (Jun 5). Chairman of the Organizing Committee of BAF who is also the Head of Bali Cultural Services Ida Bagus Made Sedhawa and Publication Coordinator Made Santa revealed it last Sunday (Jun 6). Not only that, said IB Sedhawa, noble values contained in the art compositions staged in the BAF event taking the theme Sudamala—to comprehend the purity of conscience—should be interpreted and actualized in daily life. To realize the comfort and sanitation of Denpasar Art Center area, the venue of 32nd BAF, the committee would sterilize the area from street peddlers. If in the last year’s BAF peddlers were still given the opportunity to earn a livelihood in the area of Art Center, this time they would not be allowed to so at all. The committee would prepare special places for the community audience to buy the drinks, other than providing culinary booths. At least,

the committee would provide 20 units of beverage outlets. “Audiences do not need to worry about the thirst because committee has prepared a special place selling the drinks,” said IB Sedhawa. Meanwhile, BAF from year to year still refers to the six subject matters namely parade, competition, performance, workshop, exhibition and documentation and so does that of this year. During the month-long implementation of the 32nd BAF (June 12 to July 10, 2010) will be presented 334 events, including 116 performances, 99 parades and 72 competitions. Moreover, there will be also some performances by participants from outside Bali and overseas. If at the opening session of the 32nd BAF on June 12, 2010 the art troupe of Bali Provincial Government stages colossal Ramayana ballet entitled Duta Anggada composed by ISI Denpasar, while at the closing on July 10, 2010 will be presented another colossal ballet by SMKN 3 Sukawati Gianyar entitled Kunti Yadnya.. DENPASAR – twelve art groups throughout Indonesia will take part in the 32nd annual Bali Art Festival (BAF) which will be held started on June 12th through July 10th 2010. Ida Bagus Sedhawa, the head of Bali Cultural Department, said “there is great hope that by the performances of the artists and art groups from outer Bali will give color to the BAF and give more knowledge to the people in Bali.” The art groups that will take part in BAF are for eastern Java, Riau, western Sulawesi, Gorontalo, western Kalimantan, Tanggerang, Jakarta, Magelang, and eastern Nusa Tenggara. The schedule is already being arranged so the people can feel comfortable in watching the performance. Bhuana Kerthi:

Sanctification of universe as the theme of the 32nd BAF Art parade of the 32nd Bali Arts Festival (BAF) took the start in front of the Jayasabha Building and finishes in front of Bengkel Village Hall. The main stage was set up in front of the Jayasabha Building facing the north, unlike in the last year’s event where the main stage was in front of Village Hall of Kayumas Kaja Village. In the meantime, the second stage was built in front of the Kedaton Village Hall. The release of art parade was marked by the sticking of Kayonan puppet by the Governor of Bali. Once the Kayonan was stuck, holy water (tirtha) was illustrated to emanate from the bowel of the earth. It was then responded with a blast of 30 conch shells and bleganjur gamelan orchestra, Adi Merdangga marching band and dance performances followed by Shiva Nataraja presented by the students of SMK 3 Sukawati Gianyar. The next group displayed the Great Umbrella troops, Bandrangan (50 personnel), pennant (50), gebogan or fruit and flower arrangement (50), logo of Bali Provincial Government and branding of Bali by the Hindu Dharma Institute of Denpasar (IHDN). Balinese Culture Babi Kecap (Pork Cooked in Soya Sauce) Though Indonesia is an Islamic country, there is some pork available. It is hard to find and most restaurants don’t serve it because any restaurant that cooks pork would have to have completely separate facilities and equipment to prepare it or the restaurant would not be considered halal (clean). Yield: 4 servings Ingredients o 1/2 kg (1 1/4 lb) fillet of pork -or leg of pork o 1 tb Clear soya sauce o 2 tb Plain flour o 1/2 ts Powdered ginger o 20 g (4 oz) button mushrooms o 4 Cloves garlic o 1 sl of root ginger, about 2 cm -(1") across and 1/ 2 cm -(1/4") thick o 3 tb Dark soya sauce o Pepper or a pinch of chilli -powder o 2 tb water o 2 tb Medium dry sherry or rice -wine (optional) o 2 ts Lemon juice o 6 tb Oil or pork fat Directions This, as its name suggests, is pork cooked in soya sauce. It is a particular favourite with my own husband and children, who always know when it is about to appear on the table because the ginger and garlic frying in the sauce smell so deliciously savoury. Cut the pork into small cubes. Put the flour into a bowl and add the clear soya sauce and ginger powder, mixing them well together. Coat the pork with the mixture and then let it stand for at least 30 minutes. Clean and slice the mushrooms. Peel the garlic and ginger and slice them very thin; you can use these thin slices as they are, or cut them again into very tiny sticks. Heat the oil or fat in a wok or thick frying pan and fry the meat, half of it at a time, turning it from time to time, for 5 minutes. Repeat the process for the remaining half of the meat. The flour that coated the meat will tend to stay in the pan or stick to the bottom of it, but leave it there-it will thicken the sauce later. Now take most of the oil out of the pan, leaving only about two tablespoons which you then heat again. In this, fry the tiny slices of garlic and ginger and the mushrooms, stirring continuously, for i minute. Add the soya sauce, the water and the meat. mix well, season with pepper or chilli powder, and stir continuously for 1 or 2 minutes. just before serving, add the sherry or rice wine and the lemon juice. Serve hot. This dish keeps extremely well in the freezer, and it is worth making a large quantity from, say, half a leg-of pork, which is much cheaper than buying pork fillet. If you are going to freeze your Babi Kecap, however, do not add the sherry or lemon juice at the time of cooking. To serve from the freezer, thaw the meat out completely and heat quickly on a high flame for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring or shaking the pan well all the time. Add the sherry or rice wine and lemon juice just before serving. (http://asiarecipe.com)

Cut cross-border red tape to promote ASEAN trade Agence France-Presse

HO CHI MINH CITY - Southeast Asian nations must coordinate efforts to cut cross-border red tape and promote regional road transport as they move towards a common market, industry players said Monday. Better links among the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) could reduce transport costs while boosting intra-regional trade and economic welfare, they said.

ASEAN is working towards establishing by 2015 a single market and manufacturing base of about 600 million people. But business leaders and other experts at an international fo-

rum said there are still too many bureaucratic hurdles to a free flow of regional goods. “There is no holistic approach to the supply chain from the governments’ perspective, from any government’s perspective,” said Steven Okun, vice-president for public affairs with Singapore-based shipping firm UPS. He said “there isn’t the political will yet for ASEAN to look

at these as a group of 10 countries... If we can do it collectively, trade within ASEAN is really going to grow.” He was speaking at the World Economic Forum on East Asia (WEF), a gathering of global business leaders and regional politicians. A WEF study released ahead of the meeting said that, although Singapore leads the world

in facilitating trade, significant barriers remain in the rest of the ASEAN region. Singapore kept the top rank it held in last year’s study, but five other ASEAN members fell. Barriers to trade in ASEAN “remain many and significant”, primarily in border administration and transport infrastructure, said Thierry Geiger, a co-author of the study.

Tourism-dependent Florida braces for hit as next Gulf oil front The welcome sign to this sugar-white sand beach resort Sunday signaled the unwelcome arrival of the Gulf’s oil spill eastern front: “Do not pick up oil balls, let the clean-up crew do it.” Despite the caution, Illinois tourists Taggert and Tammy Schakelford couldn’t help themselves from strolling the water’s edge, picking up pea-sized globules of glistening black oil and depositing them in a clear plastic soda bottle. “I don’t know,” Taggert said, responding to a question of the apparent futility of his exercise, and what to do with the pickings. “Take it home, I guess. I’m kind of amazed that they haven’t closed the beaches yet.” The decision would come from the Santa Rosa County Authority, but as of Sunday the beaches remained open. Florida Governor Charlie Crist said he hoped the impact on his state would not be as severe as the oozing, toxic soup the Deepwater Horizon oil spill has created in marshlands further west. Florida’s fabled beaches are the top draw of its tourism industry, its number-one money-mover. The state attracts about 80 million visitors a year, bringing in 60 billion dollars, state data show. “Hopefully,” he said, the oil would not appear in “the way it has been showing up in Louisiana. “It is easy to clean up off the beaches, as we were able to do this past weekend in Pensacola. We were disappointed that it came on the beach at all but able to clean it up fairly rapidly,” he told CNN. “It is much more difficult is what we have seen in Louisiana, when it gets into the marshes and the

estuaries, once it gets in there, it is very difficult to clean up. We are trying to do the very best we can with the resources that we have,” he said. Taggert Schakelford said he grew up in the Pensacola area and married Tammy on the Pensacola Fishing Pier in 2004. Saturday, he surfed in waters here until his eyes began to sting and the contaminated water left a bad taste. “It’s almost like losing a family member,” he said of the idyllic setting. “You’re angry, upset — that feeling you get in your gut.” Not only brought in by the tidal waters, seaweed washing up on the beach also carried the orange-brown staining oil globules, deadly for organisms that live on it. The fishing pier here was doing below-normal business, with barely three dozen anglers on its entire length. Normally, said Mike Grobstig of Pensacola, the pier would be almost shoulder-to-shoulder with fishermen. “It will be a disaster for the whole Gulf Coast,” Grobstig said of his concern for both the tourist industry and fishing. Grobstig, a plumber who just finished work on the newly-opened Jimmy Buffett hotel Margaritaville on the beach, lamented the impending losses. “If it comes in, it’s going to mess the beaches up. You can see the white sand — you know what oil will do to that white sand.” (Agence France-Presse)

Oil prices fall in Asian trade Agence France-Presse

SINGAPORE - Oil prices fell in Asian trade Monday as a weak US jobs report continued to hurt investor sentiment, analysts said. New York’s main futures contract, light sweet crude for delivery in July, slid 83 cents to 70.68 dollars a barrel in the afternoon. Brent North Sea crude for July delivery shed 69 cents to 71.40 dollars. “Oil has continued to plunge this morning, and that is also consistent with Asian equities markets, which are tanking,” said Victor Shum, a Singapore-based analyst with Purvin and Gertz energy consultancy.

Major Asian bourses were down in Monday trade, with the Japanese stock market closing 3.84 percent lower. South Korean, Australian and Hong Kong bourses were also trending downward in afternoon trade. Prices could well drop below 2010 lows of 67.90 dollars a barrel experienced in May this year over the next few days, said Shum. “It certainly could fall to that level... right now the sentiment is to sell, and the momentum could make prices drop further,” he said. Oil and stock markets are being depressed by “disappointing US employment data,” he added. A weak US jobs report released

Friday raised questions about the strength of the US economic recovery, souring international investor sentiment. The US economy created 431,000 non-farm jobs in May — the vast majority due to temporary government hiring for this year’s census. Most experts had expected 500,000 would be added. Fears of the eurozone’s financial crisis spreading to other countries within the region was also dragging equities and oil markets south, Shum said. “Both markets are reacting to concerns on the European market of the crisis spreading to other markets,” he said.

Miley Cyrus draws crowd during first performance in Spain Agence France Presse

ARGANDA DEL REY – US teen idol Miley Cyrus performed her first concert in Spain before 36,000 people on Sunday during the third day of the Rock in Rio Madrid music festival, organisers said. Wearing a black leotard and heels, the 17-year-old sang “Can’t be tamed”, “The climb” and “When I look at you”, which is part of the soundtrack of her latest film “The Last Song” that premiered in Spain last month. The crowd consisted mainly of adults and young children, mostly girls. Many climbed on the shoulders of their parents to get a better view of the stage. While Cyrus has never performed in Spain before, she enjoys a huge following in the country due to the popularity of her television series “Hannah Montana”. As a condition for playing at the festival held at Arganda del Rey located some 20 kilometres (12 miles) southeast of Madrid, she

will not perform any other concert in Spain this year. Her performance headlined a day dedicated to the family that featured two other youth-oriented acts — British pop band McFly and Scottish singer Amy Macdonald. “I think adding Miley Cyrus to the event added a whole new dimension to Rock in Rio and attracted a different kind of audience,” Gary Bongiovonni, the president of Pollstar, a Californiabased company that provides worldwide concert tour information at its web site, told AFP. Among the other artists lined up to perform at the festival, one of the world’s biggest which wraps up on June 14, are heavy metal veterans Metallica, US rockers Bon Jovi and Colombian pop star Shakira. Rock in Rio was first held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in January 1985. This is the second Rock in Rio Madrid. The first in 2008 was attended by 290,000 music fans. Organisers expect the total audience of this edition to reach 320,000 people.

‘Twilight’ tops bleephappy MTV Movie Awards Associated Press Writer

UNIVERSAL CITY, California – The hunks from “Twilight.” A girlon-girl kiss. Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera in skimpy costumes. The MTV Movie Awards were all they could be Sunday. The irreverent pop-culture celebration, which honors the year’s films in quirky categories such as best kiss was a bleep-filled bonanza, as presenters and winners let loose with four-letter words. “Twilight” was the night’s big winner, taking five trophies. “I guess ‘Twilight’ is really awesome, and I agree,” said star Kristen Stewart. “Woo!” “New Moon” sucked up prizes for best movie, kiss, female performance for Stewart and male perfor-

mance and global superstar for Robert Pattinson. Sandra Bullock won just one trophy, but it was a big one. The 45year-old actress accepted the MTV Generation Award in her first live televised appearance since she split with unfaithful husband Jesse James earlier this year. She used her time on stage to clear up tabloid rumors — “No. 1: I’m not dead.” — and lock lips with Scarlett Johansson. “I love what I do,” vowed Bullock.

“I’m not going anywhere.” Bullock, wearing a backless, glittery black dress, was presented with the show’s highest honor by her “All About Steve” co-star Bradley Cooper, “The Proposal” co-star Betty White and inexplicably Johansson, the wife of her absentee “Proposal” leading man Ryan Reynolds. When asked why she was there to help hand over the trophy, Johansson hinted she wanted to lay one on Bullock, who awkwardly obliged. “Now that we have done that,” said a smiling Bullock, “can we please go back to normal?” The twohour ceremony at the Gibson Amphitheatre was brightened by such colorful moments.

Charlie Sheen set to appear in court in Aspen Associated Press Writer

ASPEN, Colo. – Charlie Sheen is expected to appear in a Colorado court for a hearing related to domestic violence allegations involving his wife. Prosecutors confirmed last week that Sheen reached a plea agreement in the case, but no details have been released and it’s

possible the deal will be discussed when Sheen is in court in Aspen Monday. The star of the hit CBS show “Two and a Half Men” has pleaded not guilty to menacing, criminal mischief and assault charges stemming from an argument with his wife, Brooke, on Christmas Day at an Aspen home where they were on vacation. The menacing charge is a felony that

carries a prison sentence of up to three years. Sheen agreed last month to return to “Two and a Half Men” for two more seasons. Actor Charlie Sheen smiles at the CBS summer press tour party at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, July 15, 2006.

Yahoo’s site mirrors Facebook in latest facelift Associated Press Writer

This Nov. 11, 2008 photo released by ArborGen shows a field of genetically engineered eucalyptus trees in Sebring, Fla. South Carolina-based ArborGen has received federal approval to plant about 250,000 more trees in locations around the South for use by International Paper, MeadWestvaco and Rubicon LTD.

Paper industry tests genetically altered trees Associated Press Writer

TAMPA, Fla. – The commercial paper industry’s plans to plant forests of genetically altered eucalyptus trees in seven Southern states have generated more cries from critics worried that such a large introduction of a bioengineered nonnative plant could throw natural ecosystems out of whack. ArborGen, a biotechnology venture affiliated with three large paper companies, got U.S. Department of Agriculture approval last month for field trials involving as many as 250,000 trees planted at 29 sites during the next few years. Much smaller lots of the genetically altered trees have been growing in some of the states for years. Australian eucalyptus trees grow faster than native hardwoods and produce high-quality pulp perfect for paper production, but thus far, they have been able to thrive only in very warm climates. South Carolina-based ArborGen genetically altered the trees to withstand freezing temperatures, and the idea with

the test forests is to see how far north they can now be grown. The test sites will cover a total of about 300 acres in Florida, South Carolina, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Louisiana. While genetically engineered crops such as corn and soybeans have become common, ArborGen’s experiment marks the first large planting of designer trees in the United States. The company says plantations of hearty, faster-growing eucalyptus could produce more timber in a smaller area and allow conservation of natural forests. But critics say that despite the USDA’s assurance that the trees pose no environmental threat, not enough

is known about their effect on natural surroundings. “We have many reservations about it,” said Neil J. Carman, a biologist who serves on the Sierra Club’s genetic engineering committee. “We don’t think the scientific evidence is in yet that says this is a good idea.” Anne Petermann, executive director of the activist group Global Justice Ecology Project, said eucalyptus trees are invasive, require vast amounts of water that could reduce groundwater levels, and increase the wildfire risk because they are so flammable. “This is quite a dangerous tree to be mass planting,” Petermann said. But ArborGen CEO Barbara Wells said eucalyptus trees have not proven invasive in dozens of tropical countries where they are widely grown on plantations. Also, ArborGen genetically modified the trees to limit their ability to disperse seed and spread.

SAN FRANCISCO –Yahoo Inc.’s latest facelift will include a Facebook touchup. As part of changes rolling out this week, Yahoo will import personal updates from Facebook’s social network for users who want a bridge between two of the world’s most popular websites. The Facebook link will need to be turned on by each Yahoo user. The personal updates, known as a “news feed” in Facebook’s parlance, will be available throughout Yahoo’s website, including its front page and e-mail service. Other tools will empower people to automatically let their Facebook friends know what they are doing and saying on Yahoo services such as its photo-sharing site, Flickr. The additional tie-ins follow through on a makeover that Yahoo announced late last year in an effort to make its website more compelling. Although Yahoo still commands a worldwide Internet audience of nearly 600 million, people have been hanging around for progressively shorter periods during the past few years. One of the reasons is because people increasingly congregate on Facebook to share photos, video clips and music, discuss current events and bond with their families and friends.

Yahoo, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., is betting that more of its visitors will stay on its website if they can simultaneously monitor what’s happening on Facebook. Keeping people on its site longer would give Yahoo more opportunities to sell online ads and revive its revenue growth after an extended slump that has sapped its earnings power and stock price. Connecting with Facebook is just the first step in Yahoo’s attempt to establish its website as a social hub. Later this summer, Yahoo intends to import personal updates posted on Twitter’s short-messaging service. And by the end of the year, Yahoo will begin featuring widely played Internet games such as “Farmville,” “Mafia Wars” and “Fishville,” made by Zynga. The increased emphasis on socalled “social media” could make Yahoo more susceptible to the privacy backlashes that have plagued Facebook in recent years. Yahoo is trying to ensure people don’t inadvertently share any sensitive information by simplifying its privacy controls and urging visitors to review their settings. As part of that process, Yahoo’s identify control center has been renamed “Yahoo Pulse.” It had been called Yahoo Profiles since its October 2008 debut.

New lung cancer treatment shrinks some tumors: study Agence France Presse

CHICAGO – A new experimental drug helps shrink tumors in lung cancer patients with a specific form of genetic alteration, according to results from a clinical trial unveiled Saturday. The Pfizer Inc. drug crizotinib shrank tumors in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with a specific gene alteration of an enzyme implicated in cancer cell growth, known as ana-

plastic lymphoma kinase, or ALK. According to Pfizer, around 10,000 people in the United States are affected by a lung cancer with this particular genetic mutation. About 90 percent of the 82 participants in the small-scale Phase I clinical trial responded positively, and more than half — 57 percent — saw their tumors shrink after eight weeks, said lead author Yung-Jue Bang, a physician at Seoul National University College of Medicine.

A doctor and his colleagues inspect the lung X-rays. A new experimental drug helps shrink tumors in lung cancer patients with a specific form of genetic alteration, according to results from a clinical trial unveiled Saturday.

Researchers had only expected about 10 percent of the patients, many of whom had already received three or more prior treatments, to respond to the treatment. “These results are quite dramatic, and represent an important improvement over what we would see with standard chemotherapy for patients with metastatic disease,” Bang told a news conference. Most of the NSCLC patients were former smokers or never smoked. The median duration of treatment was approximately six months. Crizotinib, which is taken orally, works by inhibiting the ALK enzyme. About one in 20 lung cancer patients in the United States are estimated to

be diagnosed with ALK-positive NSCLC each year. The genetic variation targeted by crizotinib affects about five percent of lung cancer patients. Each year, 12 million new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed worldwide and nearly eight million people die from the disease. The study was presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference, which is being held in Chicago this weekend. Pfizer has begun a late-stage, or Phase III, trial to determine whether crizotinib improves the survival rate of ALK-positive lung cancer patients compared to standard chemotherapy treatment.

Spanish press hail return of King Nadal Agence France Presse

MADRID – The Spanish press on Monday hailed the return of Rafael Nadal, who regained the French Open crown to secure his fifth title on the Paris clay and reclaim his spot atop the men’s world rankings. The Spaniard saw off Robin Soderling 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in the Roland Garros final on Sunday to avenge his fourth-round defeat against the same player in 2009, his first and only career loss at the event. Nadal “reigns once again on the Paris clay and over world tennis,” headlined the daily El Pais, under a photo of the champion stretched out on the clay of the Philippe Chatrier court just after his victory. “The match reflected the tournament during which Nadal didn’t lose a set,” and regained the number one spot from Roger Federer, the news-

paper continued. Nadal “back on his throne,” headlined the daily El Mundo. “One year on, in front of a public more generous than ever, the Spaniard returns to the summit,” the newspaper continued. For ABC, Nadal “reconquers Paris after a year of agony”. “Only Nadal himself and his entourage believed in his recovery,” the

LOS ANGELES – Somewhere during the second quarter in Game 2 of the NBA finals, Ray Allen slipped into that shooting zone only visited by reallife superstars and movie characters. newspaper added, referring to a year blighted by injury and personal setbacks for the 24-year-old star. Sports dailies AS and Marca, who rarely give over the front page to anything other than football, made an exception for the Grand Slam winner. For AS, “Paris pays hommage to the master of clay,” while Marca asserted that Nadal “is still the King”. Catalan sports daily Mundo Deportivo warned that “the great Nadal is back”. “He gave an exhibition in tennis against Soderling,” the newspaper added.

103-94 victory Sunday night. Allen’s wry smile after he hit three straight 3-pointers in a two-minute span evoked memories of Michael Jordan shrugging his shoulders during his 35-point half against Portland in the 1992 finals. Even Jesus Shuttlesworth — you know, the sharpshooting kid Allen played in “He Got Game” — would have been proud. “There’s no better place, moment, time ... to win a game, and to win in a great fashion,” Allen said. “I don’t know what record it is that people are telling me that I got, but it’s great to have, great to be able to look back on it and say I did that. This is definitely our time.” Yet Allen’s barrage still wasn’t enough to hand the defending champions their first home playoff loss of the season. All that elegant brilliance might have been wasted without Rajon Rondo, whose triple-double contained much of the dirty work necessary to even the finals. While Allen scored 27 of his 32 points in the first half with a recordsetting 3-point shooting display, Rondo completed his fifth playoff triple-double down the stretch. Taking charge after Allen cooled down, the point guard racked up 19 points — including the quick-reflex basket that put Boston ahead for good — along with 12 rebounds and 10 assists. “The best part about getting a triple-double is getting a win,” Rondo said. “That’s pretty much it. It would be pointless to get a tripledouble and lose the game.” Game 3 is Tuesday night in Boston.

World Cup giants Germany land in South Africa Agence France Presse

JOHANNESBURG – Germany were the latest World Cup giants to touch down in South Africa for the first World Cup staged on the continent. The three-time champions landed at Johannesburg international airport on a crisp, clear Monday morning after the first official flight of the national airline in an Airbus A380 jumbo. “It was a great experience to be on the first A380 flight,” coach Joachim Loew told reporters as he and his 23-man squad completed immigration details before heading for a hotel near Pretoria. “We want to show South Africans from the outset that we are happy to be in their country,” added manager and former national team striker Oliver Bierhoff. Germany finished third behind Italy and France when they hosted the tournament four years ago and were runners-up to Brazil in the 2002 finals in South Korea and Japan. They are traditionally considered title contenders regardless of the state of the national team because of their famed refusal to give up no matter how desperate the situation in a World Cup match.

Hopes of Germany going all the way in the June 11-July 11 tournament did suffer a massive blow last month when midfield conductor and captain Michael Ballack was ruled out after tearing ligaments in the English FA Cup final. The injury followed a heavy tackle from Germany-born KevinPrince Boateng, a member of the Ghana squad that also landed in Johannesburg on Monday and which will contest Group D with Germany, Australia and Serbia. Defender Philipp Lahm has been elevated to Germany captain with Bayern Munich team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger the new vice-captain of a country that conquered the football world in 1954, 1974 and 1990. Germany had glamorous company on their flight from Frankfurt in the shape of Shakira, the Colombian megastar who will feature in a pretournament concert on Thursday at Orlando Stadium in Soweto township. Other teams with first-class World Cup pedigree who have already arrived in South Africa are Argentina, England, Netherlands, France and

Brazil, with Italy and European champions Spain due later this week. Ghana have been equally hard hit by injury with midfield dynamo Michael Essien, Ballack’s Chelsea team-mate, failing to recover from a knee injury sustained last January while training at the African Nations Cup in Angola. The Black Stars, runners-up to Egypt in the African tournament despite fielding an injury-ravaged side, are captained by veteran Stephen Appiah and can call on another Italybased midfielder in Sulley Muntari from Inter Milan. Another African contender to touch down were Algeria, shock qualifiers after a 24-year absence at the expense of Egypt, who arrived at recently built Durban international airport. Slovenia, who upset the odds by snatching a ticket to South Africa at the expense of Guus Hiddinkcoached Russia, were the fourth country to arrive in South Africa on Monday. The World Cup kicks off Friday when South Africa face Mexico at 90,000-seat Soccer City stadium on the Johannesburg outskirts, followed a few hours later by another Group A clash between France and Uruguay in Cape Town.

England’s King to replace Ferdinand in World Cup Agence France Presse

RUSTENBURG – Ledley King has become the favourite to replace Rio Ferdinand at the heart of England’s World Cup defence, despite the Tottenham defender’s fears he could be risking a legacy of pain for the rest of his life. With Ferdinand ruled out of the tournament by a training

ground injury he suffered soon after arriving in South Africa, King is now in line to start alongside John Terry in England’s opening match, against the United States here on Saturday. and, he admits, could result in restricted mobility in later life. That thought occurs to him on a daily basis — most acutely when he has to tell his six-year-old son he can’t play football with him for fear of incurring an injury. King though believes the opportunity of performing at the pinnacle of his profession represents a gamble worth taking. “Everytime I get up and walk, there are restrictions; squatting can be uncomfortable, I can’t stretch my knee up to stretch my groin — I can’t grab hold of my knee in that way. “But the scans over the last two or three years have indicated it is in a similar situation to when I had the operation, if not a bit better, which is good to know. “But if it does impact on me in later life then it will have been worth it. To be here is something I will never forget, to be involved in the World Cup 23 is something I will look back on.” King played alongside Terry at Euro 2004 — for which Ferdinand was banned after missing a drugs test — but was ruled out of the last World Cup with a broken foot bone. “You are a long time retired, so you might as well do everything you can now,” he added. “That’s the way I look at it.

S.Africa airports boost security for World Cup Agence France Presse JOHANNESBURG – South Africa’s international airports have a notorious reputation for baggage theft, but officials say they have cracked down on pilfering and boosted security ahead of the World Cup. Airports Company South Africa has spent 165 million rands (21 million dollars, 17 million euros) upgrading security ahead of the June 11 kickoff, including electronic bag scanners meant to cut down on luggage theft. That will be put to the test this week as 300,000 World Cup fans begin arriving in South Africa, with about one third of them landing just on Wednesday and Thursday, according to South African football officials. “Three years ago, we used to have about 40 cases of theft reported per day,” said Tebogo Mekgoe, the assistant general man-

ager at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, the busiest in the country. He acknowledged the airport had acquired a “pretty bad” reputation for theft, with international travellers often warned of baggage handlers’ sticky fingers. The US embassy website calls theft at OR Tambo a “serious problem” and encourages travellers to secure their luggage with locks approved by the air safety agency. Britain’s embassy recommends vacuum-wrapping checked bags in plastic when travelling to South Africa — a service offered in most departure terminals. But Mekgoe said the airport authority has reduced luggage theft to “almost nothing” by hiring all new baggage handlers, creating a “baggage reaction team” and switching to electronic scanners that track bags from check-in to loading on the plane.

‘Emotional’ Dovizioso stands on home podium Italy - With Valentino Rossi sidelined by injury, Andrea Dovizioso at least gave the Mugello fans one home rider to cheer for on the podium with third place in Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix. In a race that saw Repsol Honda team-mate and pole sitter Dani Pedrosa lead from start to finish, Dovizioso rose from eighth on the grid to fourth at turn one - and was third behind Pedrosa and Lorenzo by the end of the lap. Dovi remained locked to Lorenzo’s rear wheel for much of the race, but was unable to pass the double 2010 race winner. Nevertheless, third place marked his first Mugello rostrum since 2006, in the 250cc class, and his first ever home podium in MotoGP. “It’s so special to be on the podium at Mugello in front of my home crowd because I’ve never made the podium in MotoGP here - I always had to watch it on the TV in the garage!” said Andrea. “It was a really emotional experience up there with all the fans supporting us. “I made a good start and this was really important for my race. I wanted to finish the race fighting with Lorenzo because I think it could have been a good battle on the last lap, but I couldn’t catch him.”

Dovizioso has now taken three third-places from the four races held, but still needs to find more performance to challenge for race wins, having crossed the line six seconds from Pedrosa on Sunday. “We are getting closer to the front but we are not quite there yet and we have to take the next step so that we can fight for victories,” he confirmed. “Three podium finishes is a good start to the season and is very important for the championship, and it’s thanks to the hard work we’ve done over the winter and in the first races. “I’d like to say congratulations to Dani on the win because he had an incredible pace, and this is an extra motivation for us to take that extra step forward so we can fight for the win,” he added. “Andrea did an excellent job and considering his starting position we couldn’t have asked for much more,” added team manager Toshiyuki Yamaji. Dovizioso is now fourth in the championship, 32 points behind Lorenzo, but only seven from Pedrosa and should easily bridge the three point gap to the absent Rossi next time out at Silverstone.

Pedrosa - whose lead reached eight seconds at one stage - and Lorenzo instead had his hands full to claim second place from Pedrosa’s Repsol Honda team-mate Andrea Dovizioso. “Unfortunately my pace today wasn’t as good as yesterday and I could only finish second; something happened and I couldn’t ride in the same way but in the circumstances I am happy with my result,” said Lorenzo, after his fourth podium from four races. But the championship standings made much more comfortable viewing for Lorenzo, who came into Mugello just nine points ahead of Rossi and leaves 25 points in front of new nearest rival Pedrosa. “To take 90 points from 100 is great and I am leading the championship, so I cannot ask for more,” said Lorenzo, who nonetheless wants improvements in several areas: “I need to make some improvements to my riding style and Yamaha needs to try to improve the power of the bike a bit so we have some things to work on, but I am confident about the next weeks.”
