Thriller “Taken 2” earns second box office win Reuters

LOS ANGELES - Liam Neeson thriller “Taken 2” won a battle between two hostage movies over the weekend, holding on to its top box office rankings for a second week with $22.5 million from ticket sales at U.S. and Canadian theaters.

Ben Affleck’s highly praised Iran hostage thriller “Argo” was as close second, earning $20.1 million from Friday through Sunday. Low-budget horror movie “Sinister” came in third with $18.3 million, according to studio estimates compiled by Reuters. Action sequel “Taken 2” stars Neeson as a former CIA agent who is captured while on vacation in Istanbul. The movie has pulled in $86.8 million at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters since its debut a week ago, plus $132.8 million from international markets. “We continue to play broadly across all demographics and it is a testament to the strength of Liam’s character and the property,” said Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution at 20th Century Fox, which released the film. With a worldwide box office total already reaching nearly $220 million, he said the film was close to equaling the final box office total of the first “Taken” movie ($226.8 million), and therefore labeled the sequel as “a much bigger movie.”

“Taken 2” sales outpaced receipts for “Argo,” a movie that Affleck stars in and directs. The film is based on a real-life CIA plot to smuggle six U.S. diplomats out of Iran in 1979 under the guise of a fake movie production. The diplomats had escaped the storming of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran at the height of the Islamic revolution. They hid at the Canadian embassy until a CIA agent came to sneak them out of the country. “Argo” is generating buzz as an Oscar contender after earning stellar marks from critics, with 94 percent of reviews collected on the Rotten Tomatoes website praising the film. Ahead of the weekend, boxoffice forecasters had predicted an opening of $15 million or more.

Lohan To Sit Down With Barbara Walters For ‘No Holds Barred’ Interview Lindsay Lohan will soon join Barbara Walters for an exclusive, revealing interview, Access Hollywood has learned. In the next few weeks, Barbara will sit down with the actress for an extensive, “no holds barred, no questions off-limits” interview, a source close to Lindsay told Access on Sunday. The 26-year-old actress has chosen to speak with the iconic journalist because she “trusts Barbara.” “[Lindsay] has a lot of respect and admiration for her, and knows the interview will be done accurately and fairly,” the source said. Additionally, Barbara spent half a day with Lindsay on the set of her Lifetime TV movie, “Liz & Dick” this summer, where the actress gave Barbara a tour of the set, while ABC filmed behind-thescenes footage and interviews with Grant Bowler (playing Richard Burton), producer Larry Thompson and the movie’s director. Footage from Barbara’s “Liz & Dick” set visit - along with Lindsay’s new interview - will air as a one-hour primetime special. Lindsay will be the only member of the Lohan family interviewed for the special.

Proliferation of limestone dredging activities at Pecatu village, South Kuta subdistrict, is considered excessive. The dredging alleged as the dredging of quarry C in a large scale has made the Bukit Pecatu pockmarked.

“The movie is like the perfect storm, everything came together at the right time,” said Dan Fellman, president of theatrical distribution for Warner Bros, noting that the combination of the film’s appeal to all ages combined with critical acclaim and awards season buzz would spell a long commercial run. “It’s going to have legs,” he said. “Critical acclaim is going to translate into commercial success.” Warner Bros. and GK Films paid about $44 million to produce the movie.

Limestone dredging rampant, Bukit Pecatu pockmarked Bali Post

MANGUPURA - Proliferation of limestone dredging activities at Pecatu village, South Kuta subdistrict, is considered excessive. The dredging alleged as the dredging of quarry C in a large scale has made the Bukit Pecatu pockmarked. From observation made near the SDN 6 Pecatu primary school, there were two large-scale quarrying activities. The dredged land area reached tens of ares. As a result, the hill looked pockmarked because the land excavated had formed a large pool with an estimated depth of tens of meters. Some heavy equipment was deployed to dig out. Location of the limestone mine is quite secluded. Only a few residents live in the surrounding area. There spreads an unpaved road section with the width of some four to five meters. At some points, the road is quite hazardous because it is not so wide and flanked by a ravine of excavation on both sides. If driving a car and passing

a truck conveying limestone, one of the vehicles had to step aside. “These are just at two locations. Meanwhile, some major excavations are located nearby. When viewed from a helicopter, Pecatu will look pockmarked,” said Chairman of Commission B of the Badung House, I Made Sumerta. This people’s representative from Pecatu revealed the limestone dredging project in the area had been going on for a long time. It was not a matter of months, but of years. Therefore, the excavation area was quite large and extensive. His party was also apprehensive about the rise of dredging that harmed the environment. Moreover, the project activities had also disturbed

the convenience of residents. “There should be a mutual respect. We can understand that limestone is needed for development, but please also pay attention to the impact of dredging if it is undertaken too massively,” he said. Meanwhile, the Mining Division Head of the Human Settlement Agency (DCK) of Badung, I Made Suka Arsana, said on Sunday (Oct 14) that his party did not know about the exact condition of limestone dredging at Pecatu, especially the location near the SDN 6 Pecatu. On that account, a team of DCK Badung would come down to location and check the condition. As scheduled, the checking would be carried out on Monday. (kmb25)

In second debate, Obama faces challenges on key issues Reuters

WASHINGTON - Losing ground to Republican Mitt Romney on a host of issues, President Barack Obama faces a serious challenge to put his re-election bid back on track when the two men face off on Tuesday in their second debate. Obama’s passive performance in their first debate two weeks ago and Romney’s subsequent surge have raised expectations for a more fiery encounter at New York’s Hofstra University. The Democratic president’s team has been encouraged by the feisty performance of Vice President Joe Biden last week in his debate against Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan. Now, with Romney having virtually erased Obama’s lead in national polls just three weeks before the Nov. 6 election, Obama is hoping to take advantage of the town hall-style format in Tuesday’s debate to make a direct pitch to voters.
