It is with great pleasure that the Selma (AL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated welcomes you to the 26th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s Unity Breakfast. This year’s theme is “Uniting to Transform Our Community.” It was over 50 years ago that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other courageous leaders in the City of Selma sought to transform the lives of everyday citizens by seeking the basic civil liberties given through the Constitution to choose our civic leaders. Through these pivotal actions--Selma became a beacon of light and sparked a movement for civil rights within our nation.

In that same spirit of advocacy, for over 25 years the members of the Selma (AL) Chapter of The Links have strived to perform community service by providing, sponsoring and funding innovative, substantive, and sustainable programs for the community. The chapter has awarded annual scholarships, support for the performing and visual arts, and has continued to seek health equity and address health disparities within our community.

In the spirit of collaboration, the Selma (AL) Chapter decided to embark on an event to unite and celebrate, along with the community, the values of fellowship, love, social justice, and economic equality that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. championed during his lifetime. This is a day to remember and reverence him, as well as, a day for today’s emerging leaders, community change agents, and others to continue his great works and vision.

Finally, we thank you, our patrons, and supporters who have made this occasion possible each year as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.-- a spiritual leader, champion of peace, and a civil rights icon. Dr. King, Jr., said it best, “Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve.” Therefore, we must positively continue “Transforming Communities -- Fulfilling Our Purpose.”

Greetings: On behalf of the enthusiastic, dedicated, and hardworking members of the Selma (AL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, I enthusiastically welcome you to our 26th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Unity Breakfast. It is indeed a great honor to serve as the Chairwoman for this year’s event, and to continue the rich legacy of over 25 years of service to the Historic Selma community, while honoring the legacy of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year’s theme, “Uniting to Transform Our Community”, personifies our mission to provide impactful services in Historic Selma, and surrounding communities. Equally important, our current and previous supporters, have allowed us to continue to provide services in education, health and human services, national and international trends, community advocacy, services to youth, cultural enrichment, support of the arts, and scholarships to local high school students pursuing higher education.

I am humbled that you chose to share in this day with us by “Uniting to Transform Our Community”. In closing, I ask that you reflect upon this quote by the late Dr. King, “Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." Thank you for celebrating with us!

Speaker Dr. Kimberly Jeffries Leonard 17th National President of The Links, Incorporated Dr. Kimberly L. Jeffries Leonard has a life-long commitment to public service exemplified throughout her successful professional, academic and civic endeavors. Dr. Jeffries Leonard is currently the 17th National President of The Links, Incorporated and The Links Foundation, Incorporated. Dr. Jeffries Leonard serves as President and CEO of Envision Consulting, LLC, a boutique public health consulting firm specializing in strategic and innovative executive level solutions for public, private and government entities, including strategic planning, program design and implementation, and program/systems assessment and evaluation. Most recently, Dr. Jeffries Leonard was appointed Chair of the Commission on African American Affairs by Washington, D.C. Mayor, Muriel Bowser. Prior to launching her own business, she held various executive level positions within the Washington, D.C. public health sector, including federal, private and local government entities.

Dr. Jeffries Leonard has over 30 years of applied health and behavioral medicine research, evaluation, and technical assistance and training experience specializing in health promotion and disease prevention. Her broad background in public health includes expertise in minority and women’s health, and behavioral health programs, policies and related legislation; with subject matter expertise in substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, cardiovascular disease, health disparities, tribal issues and reentry. Dr. Jeffries Leonard has served as spokeswoman for federal and state government initiatives and a number of organizations with interests related to public health.

Dr. Jeffries Leonard earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Psychology from Howard University, a Master of Science degree in Psychology from North Carolina Central University and Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Fayetteville State University. She completed a National Institutes of Minority Health pre-doctoral fellowship at The George Washington University Medical School, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences examining chronic disease and family systems; a National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute post-doctoral fellowship at the Howard University Cancer Center, Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics studying cardiovascular and cancer epidemiology; and a Graduate Summer Program in Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health.

Dr. Jeffries Leonard is the recipient of numerous honors, awards and recognitions, including the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO) Alumni of the Year Award from her alma mater, Fayetteville State University, AARP “African American Change Maker” and National Health Leader, the Women in Excellence Reaching Higher Award by the Afro American Newspaper and the Chancellor’s Medallion, Fayetteville State’s highest honor bestowed on an Alum. Dr. Leonard’s extensive community service includes Director-at-Large on the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, Inc. Board of Directors, Vice President of Administration and member of the Board of Directors of the Black Women’s Agenda, Inc., an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, a member of the Washington DC chapter of Jack and Jill of America and a ruling Elder at 15th Street Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC. A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Dr. Jeffries Leonard is married to DC FEMS Battalion Fire Chief (Retired) Stephen V. Leonard and they are the proud parents of two sons, Victor and Alexander.

Sheryl Smedley Ms. Sheryl Smedley accepted the position of executive director of the Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce in July 2009, after spending 20 years in the banking industry serving in various positions including assistant branch manager, branch manager and commercial portfolio manager.

Known for her intense dedication to customer service, she was the top sales associate in her bank’s retail west Alabama division, overachieving sales goals every eligible quarter and year.

She attended Daytona Beach Community College, Selma Wallace Community College, the Alabama Banking School at the University of South Alabama and the University of Alabama.

She is a 2004 graduate of Leadership Selma-Dallas County. Recent Graduate 2017 of the U. S. Chamber of Commerce Institute of Management Southeast at the University of Georgia.

She serves or has served on the boards of Habitat for Humanity, Selma – Dallas County Historical Preservation Society, Selmont Community Development Corporation, Dallas County Department of Human Resources Task Force, Black Belt Community Foundation and the International Paper Riverdale Mill Advisory board, Old Depot Museum, Selma Children’s Choir and Orchestra and Leadership Selma and Dallas County, Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama, Business Council of Alabama, and Gear-Up Alabama.

Citizen of the Year In February 2011, she was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the Department of the Army for outstanding contributions to the City of Selma and Dallas County, June 2011 recipient of the Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds and 2013 recipient of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. Selma-Dallas County Section Community Service Award and AL.com’s 2016 Women Who Shape the State one of 30 women throughout the state who are making a difference in their community. Her career as Director of the Selma and Dallas County Chamber has been marked by true professionalism and dedication.

She serves as a volunteer tour guide for Sturdivant Hall, volunteers for the City of Selma Recreation Department’s ceramic program, and was antique show chairman for the Selma – Dallas County Pilgrimage in 2003 and 2004. She attends Church Street United Methodist Church where she was council secretary while serving on the finance committee from 2005 – 2007. She also served on the Worship Lay Ministry and as President of the Church Council 2016 – 2018 and currently serves on the Worship Steward Committee. She is a member of the Alabama Master Gardner’s Association, The Selma Exchange Club and is a sustaining member of the Selma Charity League.

Honorable Judge Collins Pettaway, Jr. Collins Pettaway, Jr. is an Alabama State Court Circuit Judge, 4th Judicial Circuit, the Largest Geographical Judicial Circuit in the State. He was a partner in the law firm of Chestnut, Sanders, Sanders & Pettaway, L.L.C. (27 years) in Selma AL and owned Attorney Collins Pettaway, Jr., L.L.C. He is a 1978 graduate of Dallas County High School as Salutatorian. He graduated from Alabama A&M University in 1982 with the school’s top academic Honor, earning straight A’s in each course each year. (a perfect 4.0 average) He is a 1985 graduate of the National Law Center, George Washington University, Washington, D.C., where he was a student representative each year and Who’s Who Among Law School Students. He has practiced law for over 28 years. He started as a Law Student Practitioner, admitted in February 1985, by the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, and worked in the United States Attorney’s Office, Superior Court Division, under Joe Diginova, U.S. Attorney and Mike Rankin (presently Judge Rankin), chief of the trial division. Collins was a noted trial lawyer and had extensive experience in diverse areas of law including civil, criminal, real property, estates, public authorities, governmental, corporate, bankruptcy and civil rights litigation. He also was a certified sports agent by the NFLPA in 1986. His trial experience has led him to handle several complex and novel issues in state and federal courts, including many instances where his position has affected the change or clarity in case law. He is a noted Alabama election law attorney. Collins worked with the Legal Services Corporation of Alabama on many pro bono projects, as well with the Circuit and District Courts in this state. He also presented cases before the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals and 2 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Citizen of the Year Among other positions, Collins has served as Board Co-chair and District President for the Seventh District of Alabama New South Coalition, the Alabama Democratic Conference and a board member for the National Conference of Black Lawyers. Collins is a member of numerous community related organizations including Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (local Chapter Basileus, District and State officer), The Pride of Alabama Elks Lodge #1170, IBPOE of W and James E. Kelley Council No. 79, Goshen Lodge No. 132, F&AM and Abraham Consistory No. 257, currently the Chair, McRae Gaines Preparatory School Board, Selma-Dallas Alabama A&M Alumni Association, served as the Vice-Moderator of the Shady Grove District Association (the only lay person to ever serve) and a Past President of the Selma-Dallas Emancipation Proclamation Committee, always keeping his eye towards the people. He is a Deacon and Music Director at Ebenezer Baptist Church, performing several community tasks. He served as First VicePresident of the Alabama Baptist State Congress of Christian Education. He was a stellar athlete in high school and college, earning an athletic scholarship. He did well academically and athletically at the same time.

He is married to the former Synethia Electa Perkins. He was attorney and advisor for his brother-in-law, Mayor James Perkins, Jr., of Selma during his election campaigns.

Collins has three children, Kendrick, Collins, III and Candice Celeste. His father, Rev. Dr. Collins Pettaway, Sr., is a noted pastor and evangelist throughout the United States, and serves as the foreign mission representative for this state. His mother, Alma Mosley Pettaway, deceased, was a gifted musician and singer. Her father, Rev. Andrew Mosley, Sr., was the rock-solid pastor of Green Street Baptist Church, Selma, AL during the forties and fifties. Her mother, Eva O. Mosley, started the first private academy school for black children in Selma, AL. Collins has four brothers and four sisters, many of whom have significant contributions to their respective communities.

As you can see, Collins has strong roots in Christian and Community service.

History of the Selma Chapter of The Links, Incorporated Attorney Patricia Russell McCloud, J.D. National President of the Links, Inc. and Dr. JoAnn Brown Nash, Ph.D., National Vice-President and Chapter Establishment Officer, established the Selma Chapter of The Links, Incorporated on April 29, 1995. The Southern Area Director was Mrs. Joyce M. Dixon. The group consisted of a cross section of women from the Selma and Dallas County areas. They came to the group from various professions, which included education, human services, music, law enforcement, government, health services, and private business. Twenty-two members were inducted into the Links, Incorporated. Mrs. L. Dale Bryant, the organizer and Interest Group President, was elected the first President of the Selma Links, Incorporated.

Targeted groups for program activities were the youth because of the assessed need to empower them with survival skills, self-esteem, and self-motivation; the elderly because of our need to remember our heritage, bridge generations and to nurture "who we are as well as who we will be"; and the community because we recognize the need to keep the community informed and focused on the assets of diversity. The organization started the Martin Luther King Unity Breakfast, with Dr. Harold Carter as the first speaker and the Late Vivian Malone as the featured speaker in 1993. Funds generated from the Breakfast and the Walk-a-Thon were given to the Don Bosco soup Kitchen for many years. The Scholarship Program started during the early years of the organization with Link Josephine S. Stokes, a native Selmian as the main contributor. The Chapter honored her by naming the scholarship in her honor. The Southern Area named Mrs. Patricia Posey the "Unsung Heroine". She is the only one to hold that honor. The Nutcracker was presented to more than one thousand students from the Dallas County School System at Tipton Middle School. Other highlights of Mrs. Bryant's presidency included: Assisting SABER House for Abused Women and Children, The Lighthouse Nursing Home and winning several awards on the Area and National Levels.

In 1998, Mrs. Gloria F. Smith succeeded Mrs. Bryant as president; however, prior to becoming president she served as vice President of both the Interest Group and the Chartering Group. As President, she continued the rich tradition of service to the Selma/Dallas County area. She initiated the concept of corporate tables for the Chapter's annual Unity Breakfast. Moreover, Link Smith envisioned the idea of a grant for services to the elderly, secured a grant of $10,000 for the Selma Youth Development Center and a subsequent $5,000 grant from the Links Foundation. Chapter programming continued to receive national recognition and awards for outstanding work. As a matter of fact, the Chapter received National and Area recognition at each level (1st, 2nd, 3rd place) in all areas of programming. In addition, under her leadership, the Chapter Partnered with African Americans Uniting for Life (Weekend Drive for bone Marrow Donors) and secured a Community Involvement Grant for the Chapter's project of Physical Fitness at the Epworth House. This much needed project was executed under the leadership of Mrs. Juanda Maxwell and her committees. Link Smith served a four year term (1998-2002) as president of this illustrious Chapter.

In the year of 2002, the Chapter elected Mrs. Juanda Maxwell as the 3rd President. Mrs. Maxwell brought a vision for more involvement in the community. Under the her leadership of the Chapter sponsored a major production of the “Nutcracker Ballet�, with over two thousand people in attendance over a two days period and raised over $5,000.00. With the support of the chapter she initiated a monthly canned goods program for the elderly with Helping Hand Ministries, initiated the only ground collection of monies from four different sites in the Selma City for Hurricane Katrina victims (over $2,000.00 raised), continued the work for senior citizens at the Epworth House (exercise for the elderly), continued Chapter support for the public schools in Selma/Dallas County, scholarships for children in the community, support for the Cancer Society, Diabetes Society, The American Heart Association, Bosco Center (feeding program for the homeless) , and Teen Summit , which brought teens from all of the area high schools together to discuss problems and issues relevant to teens today. The Selma Youth Development Center secured a 5,000.00 grant to further enhance and support youth from The Links Foundation.

History of the Selma Chapter of The Links, Incorporated The first web site was envisioned and initiated during this period. The chapter won “best practices” each of the four years of her presidency. In addition, the chapter won 3rd place award for programming (National Trends) at Area in Nassau, Bahamas and later won 3rd place award for programming (National Trends) at National Assembly in Philadelphia, PA. with an award of 3,000.00.

Lastly, upon an invitation of the chapter and Mrs. Maxwell, Dr. Gladys Vaughn, National President of The Links, Inc. was guest speaker for the Dr. Martin Luther King Breakfast with a packed audience, thusly: Mrs. Maxwell ended four years of service to the Selma Chapter as President. In 2006, the Chapter elected Mrs. Nancy G. Sewell as the 4th President, Mrs. Sewell embraced the presidency with a wealth of knowledge and experience as a leader, laced with a deep commitment to the twin pillars of Friendship and Service. During her presidency, the Chapter was one of eight chapters in The Links, Incorporated awarded the University of California at Davis’ Cardiovascular Grant of $3,500.00. This grant, implanted in two phases over a two-period, allowed the Selma Links to work with thirty-four African American women through workshops, seminars, physical fitness programs and planned dietary meals, to help stem the rising tide of obesity, diabetes and heart attacks. Mrs. Earlene Larkin, served as the site coordinator. Additionally, the National Trends and Services Facet, under the leadership of Dr. Patricia K. Robinson implemented an awardwinning program that focused on selected youth groups, ages 11-17 in Selma, Dallas, Wilcox and Perry Counties.

The program entitled, “Mission Possible: My Body, My Future” was a two-phase program that extended over a two year period. As a result of this award-winning program, the National Links, Inc. presented the Chapter a $3,000.00 check for Best Practices. Likewise, the Services to Youth Facet, directed by Mrs. Gloria Brown was also the winner of a $3,000.00 Best Practices award for its implementation of outstanding programs to youth. In addition, the Chapter won third place, $3,000.00 for its presentation of a Service Delivery Model, consisting of a power point, scrapbook and a display board, showcasing the outcomes of our varied programs the 2008 National Assembly of The Links, Inc. held in Seattle, Washington. Inspired by the Chapter’s hard work, the National President of The Links, Incorporated, Dr. Gwendolyn B. Lee, consented to serve as the 17th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast keynote speaker. Mrs. Sewell’s presidency approached the end, under the leadership of Dr. Patricia K. Robinson, the signature program, “Project Lead” was initiated and successfully implemented during a two-month period (February-March, 2010) at the Sophia P. Kingston Elementary School.

Thus, bringing closure to two terms (2006-2010) of hard work and dedication to the twin pillars of friendship and service.

Mrs. Pinkie H. Platt was elected fifth president of the Selma Chapter in 2010. Continuing the strong legacy of previous Selma Chapter presidents, a priority was placed on fostering activities that would increase the bonding of friendship among chapter members and ultimately enhance the provision of service to the Selma, Dallas County Community. National Assembly was held in Detroit, Michigan with The Selma Chapter earning third place award ($1,000) in national competition for exhibition of chapter programming. The chapter was chosen to pilot “Kids Edition” for the Southern Area focusing on Obesity Prevention. In the fall of 2011, The Selma Chapter collaborated with Selma’s First Lady, Mrs. Jeannie Evans in “Let’s Move” – Selma, promoting healthy diet and exercise for Selma’s youth. Mrs. Platt initiated an Area Chapter Dinner at 2011 Area Conference in New Orleans with 100% participation of all in attendance. Continuing its reputation for excellence, the Chapter won Outstanding

History of the Selma Chapter of The Links, Incorporated Exhibit Award 2011 for programming at Area Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. In June, 2012, seven new members were inducted into the Chapter. Those new members were: Willietta Conner, Maria S. Dale, Evelyn S. Evans, Sharon Jackson, Betty Miller, Cynthia Mitchell and Phenicia Nunn. In July, 2012, the chapter was invited to present a workshop on its Obesity Prevention Project at National Assembly in Orlando, Florida.

Mrs. Charlotte Griffeth was elected the sixth president of the Selma Chapter in 2014. As a former journalist and school administrator, she began her illustrious administration with the first Annual Walk-a-Thon held at historic Riverfront Park overlooking the famous Edmund Pettus Bridge. In keeping with the National focus of the National President, the Selma Chapter honored a well-known Selma healthcare professional and professor, Dr. Geraldine Williams Allen posthumously. This wonderful occasion drew a very large diverse crowd as the Chapter honored someone who had touched the heart and soul of many as we continued to “Build a Healthy Legacy.”

Under Griffeth’s leadership the Chapter partnered with S.T.E.M. professionals, colleges and universities to establish the first S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Career Academy for high school students and awarded the first S.T.E.M. Scholarship. The S.T.E.M. partners include Selma City Schools, Ellwood Christian Academy, Wallace Community College, Tuskegee University, Alabama State University, the University of Alabama, Alabama State University, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management and Hogg Engineering. The Chapter was recognized in 2015 and 2017 for Best Practices, received a $1,000 grant to support the S.T.E.M. program and ACT Prep from the International Paper Company. ACT Prep continued in 2017 and 2018 to assist local high school students in increasing scores to open the way for scholarships. The Chapter continues to use technology and social media as effective communications tools. In June 2017 the Chapter received 1st Place at the Southern Area Regional Conference for its exhibit of the S.T.E.M. Career Academy.

In 2017, Griffeth was successful in increasing scholarship funds which made it possible to award a scholarship to a qualified student from each area High School. In addition, the S.T.E.M. scholarship was increased from $500.00 to $1,000.00 for a qualified recipient. Communication is maintained with scholarship recipients throughout their college career and care packages are sent periodically. The Selma Chapter has joined the Southern Area in support and adoption of an Elementary School in Jamaica through its program initiative, “One Mission, One Love.” The Chapter partnered with Dr. Jerry Light and the local ministerial coalition to sponsor the Mayoral and City Council election debates. The Chapter partnered with the Panhellenic Council with “Get Out The Vote” to provide rides to the polls during two important elections. A Forum was held with all public and private school Juniors and Seniors to educate youth on the importance of voting and those of legal age were able to register to vote. The Chapter also supported the City during the 50th Anniversary of the Bridge Crossing Jubilee, the premiere of the movie, Selma, Let’s Move Initiative with First Lady Jeannie Evans, Adopt-a-Mile Cleanup, In June 2016, nine new members were inducted into the Chapter under Griffeth’s leadership and one transferred from another chapter. In 2017 four more new members joined the Chapter and began to immediately engage in Program Initiatives throughout the community. The leadership qualities brought to the Chapter by the 14 members who came in under Griffeth’s administration has brought new ideas, energy, and enthusiasm. The use of technology, social media and creative implementation of program initiatives are just some of the exciting ways the new members have immersed themselves in Linkdom. Simultaneously seven members achieved their honorable Alumnae status.

In 2017, Griffeth gained the confidence of the Area Director and was appointed as one of two individuals to review and edit the minutes of the Southern Area Conference. She is very proud that two important milestones occurred during her tenure, 1) The Chapter celebrated it’s 20th year anniversary having obtained the National Links Charter and, 2) The 25th Unity Breakfast was held.

History of the Selma Chapter of The Links, Incorporated Dorothy C. Barnes was elected the seventh chapter president of the Selma (AL) Chapter in 2018. The chapter received 2nd Place for National Trends and Services Program Award for the reporting period 2016 through 2018. The chapter received the award for creating, sponsoring and implementing the S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Program while working with 9th through 12th grade high school students. The award was received from National President Dr. Glenda Newell-Harris at the 41st National Assembly, Indianapolis, Indiana in June 2018. The chapter was awarded a monetary grant in the amount of $1,750.00 as an initiative for the chapter’s commitment to providing valuable community services to the youth and for the continuance of the S.T.E.M. Career Academy Program. This program helps students explore and pursue education and career jobs in the S.T.E.M. fields.

The chapter hosted its first Links Emerald Tea on November 10, 2018. It was a Founders’ Day celebration fostering friendship among Links, as well as, with other members of the community. The event promoted the ideals of friendship and service and gave those in attendance an opportunity to fellowship with each other, as many of the attendees discovered that they were from both interesting and varied backgrounds.

In addition, this year the chapter has expanded the S.T.E.M. initiative program. It is continuing to work with 9th through 12th grade high school students interested in the S.T.E.M. field areas. The Selma Links Chapter has chartered its first NSBE Jr. Chapter by partnering with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). This organization focuses on students in K-12th grades and pursues the goals of stimulating students’ interest in the S.T.E.M. fields and encouraging them to attend college or pursue technical degrees.
