new york COMING OF AGE IN A GLOBALIZED WORLD A city of endless energy and limitless possibilities, New York is an iconic and vibrant global metropolis full of art, culture, fashion, and finance. Envoys Thanksgiving programs enable students to come to know New York beyond the typical tourist experience, and delve into all the ‘city that never sleeps’ has to offer. Amidst this international cosmopolitan center, students consider their future role as an ambassador of the world.

10

Program Highlights 1. Explore destinations off the traditional tourist path in the world’s city. 2. Visit and tour some of the US’s most regarded universities and meet with admissions staff. 3. Stand on the floor of the United Nations General Assembly Hall, where each year heads of state from all the world’s nations convene to discuss issues of global significance.

4. Explore the complicated and historically significant tensions during industrialization as New York was on the rise in the nineteenth century.

5. Experience the vibrant and diverse culinary history of New York City.

11

Perhaps nowhere else in the United States are the effects of globalization more evident than New York City. For example, just 51% of NY households speak only English (WNYC, 2015).

1. Self-Understanding through Cultural Analysis Students will have ample opportunity to reflect on their own lived experiences against the backdrop of one of the world’s greatest metropolises. As we engage with different industries, explore history, have conversations about the future, and develop an understanding of global issues, students will ask themselves how they view their role in a rapidly changing world.

Never before has the world’s population been so itinerant, or our communities more connected through advances in technology and improvement in the quality of life. Through the lens of this ethereal city, we will explore what it means to be a young global citizen in the twenty-first century.

2. Empathy and perspective-taking Envoys’ unique pedagogical approach to immersion and global travel provides students opportunities to get out of their comfort zones and explore cultures, traditions, and norms different from their own. This is a carefullyscaffolded methodology that enables students to understand the relativity of their own experiences and fully embrace and respect those of others.

ALL ACTIVITIES WILL 1. Relate students’ lived experiences to the topics and sites we explore 2. Raise students’ awareness of global culture and economic interdependence, as well as the role of politics, business, art, and design in shaping our communities (both local and global). 3. Facilitate communication and shared knowledge amongst participants
