A Sense of Home (ASOH) is a nonprofit organization that creates first-ever homes for youth aging out of foster care This unique service and program model provides physical and emotional support to these young adults at a critical point in their lives As volunteers and community partners donate furniture and home goods, they are transforming the lives of these individuals by ensuring a safe, healthy home In Los Angeles County, 50% of those experiencing homelessness are former foster youth A Sense of Home works to prevent homelessness for foster youth by building connections and community
ASOH was founded in 2014 by Georgie Smith after a random act of kindness She created a home for a 21-year-old man who had been released from the foster care system into a subsidized apartment with no furnishings, arriving with nothing but black plastic trash bags of his personal belongings What she thought was a one-off random act of kindness became a weekly ritual of community members renting trucks to collect donated furniture and home goods, creating up to four homes every Sunday By October 2015, Smith formed a board and by March 2016, A Sense of Home was a 501c3 As of today, A Sense of Home has created 800+ homes placing over 2,000 young people in beds
Because of its deeply impactful and transformative results, the Sense of Home program model is now expanding to major cities in the US and internationally As the founder and current CEO focuses on these scaling efforts, an Executive Director is needed to take over leadership for the Los Angeles Chapter
A Sense of Home is growing and expanding to major cities within the US and internationally Given the success of the model operating in LA, the founder and CEO will be focused on scaling and the formation of ASOH HQ which overseas all growth The incoming Executive Director (ED) will be leading the Los Angeles operation as its own chapter This position will report to the CEO/Founder as well as the Chapter’s Board of Directors The ED is responsible for ensuring that the chapter operates in accordance with established organizational policies, procedures, and guidelines
The Executive Director is mission driven, passionate and an excellent communicator who can share the vital way A Sense of Home is working to prevent homelessness The ED will activate and engage staff and board as brand ambassadors as well as strengthen partnerships with aligned organizations to enhance community engagement This position will be able to identify new fundraising sources (as well as grants) to further broaden the work of A Sense of Home The ED will reach out to current donors so they are able to establish themselves as well as look at potential prospects for future opportunities
The Executive Director will directly and indirectly manage a team of no less than eight including a Development & Communications Director, Operations Directors, Resources Director, Recipient Advocate, Community Engagement Coordinator, Content Coordinator, Home Coordinator, Community Engagement Coordinator, and the Logistics Coordinator The ED will focus on continually improving the chapter's best practices and processes with a lens of promoting racial and gender
The ideal candidate has managed programs, built and led effective teams, and played a lead role in fundraising As the face of the Los Angeles Chapter, the incoming leader embodies the organization's values, demonstrating strong ethics and a keen understanding as to how diversity, equity and inclusion translates into action, systems, and operation This person will be a team player, collaborative in every sense of the word As the lead relationship manager, the Executive Director will cultivate critical partnerships with corporations, foundations, individual and major gift donors, with a hands-on role in fundraising events and grant procurement
The future Executive Director embraces their critical role in the organization's vision for scaling and is dedicated to growing the Los Angles Chapter to meet the needs of today's foster youth Since this is a new leadership structure, the ideal candidate will be skilled in leading staff through transitions, building organizational culture, as well as setting and meeting goals
