ESS is having something of a growth spurt. This September’s event has expanded by over 30%, making it comfortably the UK’s largest environmental gathering. When the doors open at Birmingham NEC on 17-18 September, visitors will find a show that’s evolved in scope.
The expansion reflects how environmental challenges have become increasingly interconnected – and how the industry has responded by bringing different specialisms under one roof.
CARS Expo makes its ESS debut this year, creating a dedicated space for vehicle recyclers, dismantlers, and metal recovery specialists. It’s a natural fit given the automotive industry’s push toward circularity and the growing complexity of end-of-life vehicle processing.
GEO Expo builds on the success of our Contamination & Land Remediation Expo, giving geotechnical professionals their own area to explore site investigation, remediation techniques, and emerging monitoring technologies.
The big acquisition news is WWEM and AQE – the established air and water quality events that now call ESS home. This collaboration creates a single platform where environmental monitoring professionals can access everything from atmospheric sensors to water treatment innovations.
The live demonstration area returns with more machinery, equipment, and real-world testing than ever before. There’s something compelling about watching technology actually work rather than just hearing about it in presentations.
The new Tippers & Tankers Zone focuses on the transport side of waste and materials management – an area that’s becoming increasingly important as operators look to optimise logistics and reduce their carbon footprint.
Need a break between sessions? Head to the Inn on the Green, ESS’s own onsite pub—complete with live music both days and plenty of networking opportunities in a relaxed setting.

The speaker lineup tackles real challenges rather than theory. Alex Sobel MP brings energy case studies from the coalface of Net Zero policy, while National Gas’s Doug Millington-Smith explores hydrogen’s practical role in the clean energy transition.
Liverpool Football Club’s Rishi Jain might seem like an unusual addition until you consider that sports clubs are becoming serious players in sustainability. He’ll share how one of the world’s most famous football clubs is embedding sustainability and circularity across operations and fan engagement.
Mike Reader MP takes on construction decarbonisation – a sector that struggles to deliver meaningful carbon savings. Meanwhile, Hitachi Energy’s Raul Montano to make large-scale infrastructure projects less complex and more cost-effective.
TV presenter Michaela Strachan headlines the programme, bringing decades of environmental storytelling experience talking about conservation and climate change case studies.
This year’s Environmental Monitoring Awardsnow hosted at ESS - received a record-breaking 200+ entries. Winners will be announced at a celebratory evening event at The VOX on 17 September – limited tickets available, so move fast if you want to celebrate with the sector’s finest.
The 35 Under 35 and Environment 100 recognition events spotlight both rising talent and established leaders. In a sector facing skills shortages, these programmes matter more than ever so be sure to check them out!
With eight additional content theatres this year, ESS offers its most comprehensive learning programme yet. Air quality, circularity, biodiversity, net-zero, water, waste – if it’s environmentally important, there’s probably a dedicated session.
The challenge won’t be finding relevant content – it’ll be choosing between competing sessions that all sound essential to your work.

The recycling industry landscape is shifting, and nowhere is this more evident than in the decision to bring the Complete Auto Recycling Show (CARS) and Metals Recycling Event (MRE) under the ESS umbrella for the first time.
For vehicle dismantlers and metal recyclers who have attended these events as standalone shows, the integration promises a different experience entirely. Rather than operating in their traditional silos, attendees will now rub shoulders with waste management professionals, environmental consultants, and sustainability experts from across the sector.
The numbers tell part of the story – around 2,000 specialist visitors from the automotive and metals sectors will join 13,000 other environmental professionals, with 70 exhibitors showcasing everything from ELV processing equipment to battery recovery technology.
One of the most anticipated features is the expanded Live Demonstration Area, where visitors can witness machinery and processes in action rather than simply viewing static displays. For an industry where operational efficiency and safety improvements can make or break margins, seeing technology perform in real-time conditions offers genuine value.
The conference programme reflects the challenges currently facing both sectors. CARS will address the practical implications of the new ELV Code of Practice – a topic that’s been causing headaches for many operators trying to navigate compliance requirements. David Cresswell from ABP Club and Mark Wells from The Institute of Automotive Engineer Assessors will walk through what the changes actually mean on the ground.
The automotive sessions also dive into the operational realities of ELV processing, with Dave Pickering from Eladene Systems joining representatives from SYNETIQ and Autospares & Salvage to discuss how yards are adapting to changing market conditions. Eddie Longworth from e2e Total Loss Claims Management will chair what’s likely to be a frank discussion about the evolving relationship between recyclers and the insurance sector.
Perhaps most intriguingly, the “From Charge to Reuse” session will explore EV battery recovery – a topic that’s moved from theoretical future concern to immediate operational challenge as electric vehicles begin appearing in yards in meaningful numbers. With experts from Nissan, Altillium, and EMR on the panel, attendees should get practical insights into what’s actually possible with current battery processing technology.
The MRE programme takes on equally pressing issues, starting with “Price vs Policy” – examining how global trade tensions, environmental regulations, and market volatility are reshaping metal recycling operations. Senior figures from the London Metal Exchange, Worldsteel, and Bureau of International Recycling will discuss how recyclers can navigate an increasingly complex international landscape.
The UK steel industry session promises to be particularly relevant given ongoing uncertainty about domestic production capacity. Representatives from Tata Steel, UK Steel, and MPIUK will explore where recycled materials fit into the sector’s future – crucial information for scrap processors trying to understand long-term demand patterns.
For ESS organisers, the integration represents a significant expansion of scope. For CARS and MRE attendees, it offers access to a broader ecosystem of potential partners, customers, and suppliers. Whether this cross-pollination delivers genuine business value will likely depend on how effectively the programming connects different sectors and how willing attendees are to step outside their traditional networking circles.
The recycling and waste industry is evolving fast – tighter regulations, more complex materials, and greater pressure to cut downtime and stay competitive. And the risks are real: poor dust control in recycling work environments can damage equipment, disrupt processes, threaten safety, and cause fires or explosions.
That’s where we come in.

The Wybone roadshow is coming to RWM 2025, and you can find us on stand CT-H280.
This year we’re bringing our newest and best litter bins, wheelie bin covers, bin hubs and Mr Fill products, helping councils & local authorities with on-street and residential litter collection.
We’re also bringing our market leading internal recycling bins for offices & businesses, helping you comply with new GOV.UK Simpler Recycling.
Come and say hello and hear about all things Wybone, and leave with both the solution to your waste collection needs, and a famous Wybone chocolate bar!
