IT’S TIME TO CHANGE At the Antibes Yacht Show in 2012, I held a seminar promoted by both the show organisers and Nature 2000, an EU directive for the protection of threatened habitats and species across Europe. The aim of the presentation was to raise awareness of the current maritime regulations that exist to protect our fragile coastal marine environment. Six years later and, I’m sorry to say that very little has changed.

It’s not enough to be compliant. In the case of yachts, which are often in port or anchored in coastal areas, current legislation is not sufficient to protect the delicate marine ecosystems.

Yacht specific legislation is non-existent and the umbrella we sit under is not adequate.

How many yachts continue to discharge in ports and coastal anchorages? And how many yachts are still using harsh and potentially damaging chemicals on board which are in turn discharged?

Our industry is not lacking in resources, but funds need to be re-directed to protect our oceans and in turn protect our livelihoods.

He captures live specimens for European aquariums and scientific institutes. At the same time, Gérard keeps a close eye on what is happening in the marine environment

WHO IS GÉRARD CARRODANO IN THE REGION OF LA CIOTAT?

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AS ‘SENTINELLE DE LA MER’?

I’ve been a fishing skipper and professional diver for over 30 years and now I’m the 1st prudhomme de pêche (1st representative of the fishermen’s corporation) in La Ciotat. I specialise in capturing live specimens to be sold to European aquariums and scientific institutes. I also act as Sentinelle de la Mer ‘Sea Watchman’ for the French Agence de l’Eau (French Water Agency).

I provide the Agence de la Mer and local authorities with the results of what we observe below the waves and on the coastline and report on the evolution of the local marine environment. I am also a ‘whistle-blower’, exposing any kind of activity that is considered illegal, unethical, or incorrect in relation to damaging the marine eco system in these local waters surrounding La Ciotat.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN CHANGES TO THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT THAT YOU HAVE NOTICED OVER THE YEARS?

used when carrying out work on the yachts, plus little pieces of polystyrene that probably come from food delivery boxes.

I have mixed feelings regarding this question.

Generally speaking, the marine environment has been improving over the past 20/30 years.

There are fewer hydrocarbons in the water and the numbers of some species such as groupers, barracuda and fan mussels are on the increase.

However, other species such as sea urchins, hake and gurnards are becoming scarce. New types of seaweed have appeared, but for the moment they do not appear to be toxic.

WHAT IS THE CONDITION OF THE POSIDONIA MEADOWS AROUND LA CIOTAT? The overall condition of the posidonia meadows around La Ciotat is excellent and it is getting even better in the zones that were marked out about 20 years ago. However, the posidonia fields in the bay here are suffering due to ill-informed or negligent captains mooring in them.

For many years now, we have been asking the Préfecture Maritime (French maritime authority) for instructions specifying mooring points outside the 30-metre isobath, where there is no more posidonia.

It seems they are not particularly interested in this.

But it is a battle that we will continue.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT CAN SUPERYACHT CREW, MANAGEMENT COMPANIES AND OWNERS DO TO IMPROVE THEIR ROLE IN RESPECTING THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT?

90s. Environmental standards have evolved and improved, and the newer shipyards in general have been designed in conformity with the new standards. Nevertheless, we must remain vigilant.

Day-workers can be careless with some waste materials, while local businesses are generally more respectful of their environment.

The superyacht industry is quite unique, and captains can have very different behaviours. It is up to us and to the companies working for the superyachts to advise them on the correct conduct to have. This often does happen… but not always.

We need to establish a code of good conduct applying to the special nature of our bay and give it to all the boats that arrive onto the platform here. Some companies like Monaco Marine have employees responsible for environmental issues, with whom we are in regular and positive contact.

OVER THE PAST YEARS, LA CIOTAT SHIPYARDS HAVE CHANGED GREATLY. HAVE THEY INCLUDED ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES IN THEIR DEVELOPMENTS? Absolutely. Pollution from the luxury yachting industry is nothing like the pollution from commercial shipbuilding between the 70s and

Local marine businesses should have a nominated person responsible for overseeing environment issues within the business.

Insist that delivery companies take back surplus packaging, especially polystyrene boxes, to reduce the quantity of waste that could accidentally enter the sea.

WHO IS JON SPILLER?

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN REGARDING HANDLING OF GARBAGE ON BOARD YACHTS?

My obsession with all things water-based began as a boy sailing with my family in a variety of small boats on the Irish Sea. I later joined the Merchant Navy as an Engineer cadet and after 10 years, left with a Class 1 Chief Engineer’s qualification. I felt the need to reconnect with the water, so went sailing again. Eventually “yachting” called and I worked my way up the ranks and across the departments.

I have been sailing as Captain for over 20 years, currently working on board a 59m S/Y.

I am ashamed to say when I started out as a cadet it was normal practice to throw all waste “over the wall” i.e. into the sea. At the time there was a lot of talk about oil pollution, but garbage and air pollution was not taken seriously. After 30 years I think we have the oil side under control due to regulations and strict penalties. The same awareness has been coming for all pollution categories, but we are now in a serious hurry.

VIEWS FROM THE HELM Drinking ship’s water and using a soda stream for bubbles saves a huge amount of plastic. It also saves a great deal of effort lugging it aboard and storing it, even before we need to dispose of it.

HOW ARE PORTS AND MARINAS HANDLING THE GARBAGE SITUATION?

plants; it is essential that this continues. Grey water is still a massive problem given the amount yachts produce. It’s imperative we mitigate these discharges by limiting chemicals, and move to those proven to be marine friendly. Older yachts are compromised as to what is possible. But we can at least hold onto waste in coastal and port areas, all vessels should be able to do this to some extent these days. Marinas need to supply shore discharge facilities into the town sewers.

We are starting to see facilities being put in place ashore to recycle garbage, which is great. However, consistency is lacking from one marina to the next and from country to country. More needs to be done, waste oil, light bulb and battery recycling facilities for example.

All crew should be sorting, cleaning and storing the packaging and plastics from food and drinks. It takes a little work but once it is routine, life gets easier and it becomes second nature. If we can manage our waste until reaching a capable shore facility it would help a lot.

YOU HAVE BEEN CRUISING GLOBALLY OF LATE, ANY THOUGHTS THERE? I recently returned from a cruise in Panama’s beautiful San Blas islands, and was horrified by the amount of plastic on some of the beaches. We attempted a beach clean, but it would take a lot more than our efforts that day to fix the problem.

LET’S TALK ‘BLACK AND GREY’: Black water is treated on board but yachts are often still too small to fit full aerobic treatment plants, which are very effective and a natural solution.

We need large, dedicated cool, or better, frozen storage to avoid unhealthy conditions. Food waste can be ground down and discharged when offshore. These are just a couple simple ideas, but we need to be accountable and responsible, come up with lots more ideas. Sounds a bit corny but I think it fits perfectly: “Take only photos, leave only footprints.”

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOARD TO HELP? If yachts are equipped with good silver ion and / or UV lamp sterilisation plants, as well as sand and carbon filters, then water-maker water will be safe to drink, in your own personal bottle. Fresh water on board is checked during the biannual sanitary inspections. Drinking ship’s water and using a soda stream for bubbles saves a huge amount of plastic.

It also saves a great deal of effort lugging it aboard and storing it even before we need to dispose of it.

You will be surprised once the initial shock is put aside- “no bottled water” (?!) Crew and guests love this feature on our yacht. Lobby your management to make these changes.

WHAT WE CAN DO BLACK WATER Black water is treated on board but yachts are often still too small to fit full aerobic treatment plants, which are very effective and a natural solution.

GREY WATER This is still a massive problem given the amount yachts produce. It’s imperative we mitigate these discharges by limiting chemicals.

Use fewer chemicals and always marine-friendly ones where possible.

Older yachts are compromised as to what is possible. But we can at least hold onto waste in coastal and port areas, all vessels should be able to do this these days. Marinas need to supply shore discharge facilities into the town sewers.

Take an interest in leaving the lowest carbon footprint. We offset the fuel we use on global green projects, by purchasing carbon credits approved

by Lloyds. It’s surprisingly cheap, and the owners can give themselves a pat on the back for doing something significant which required no effort at all!

BIN BAGS Bin bags nowadays are getting even more confusing than trying to choose which packet of Haribos to buy! If you want to be 100% eco the deckhand will scream at you as you walk the bin bags off the yacht leaving a trail of liquid drops on the nice clean teak deck. So what is the answer?

The 50/50 eco way is to buy bin bags that are made from over 50% recycled plastic. They can be very thick which is more practical for yachts. The main advantage is that you can ‘single-bag’, reducing plastic and ensuring they do not leak.

Compostable bin bags do not really work for yachts as they start to disintegrate on contact with liquid and air, when you start to throw waste into them! They have a well-defined degradable time frame. Okay for a home, but not really for a yacht.

Biodegradable bin bags are the other eco-solution. They are made from natural plant materials, usually sugar cane in Europe. They biodegrade in the presence of certain microbes and are less likely to leak than compostable bags.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE ALONG THE QUAYS BETWEEN THE 1970S AND TODAY?

David, a former merchant seaman began his sea time in 1963, and joined yachting in 1967 as mate aboard what was an enormous yacht in those days: the Trawler Yacht MOBY DICK, all of 28 meters long. In 1968, David skippered a 14m Hatteras from the UK to France via the North Atlantic, subsequently moving up through the ranks to skippering 50m+ superyachts. He finished his yachting career in 1985 when marriage and children changed the tides. Today, David is logistics and delivery manager for EYS. He also runs ECOCREW charity, which is supported by EYS.

The very early days of yachting did not know the ‘mega beasts’ that we see today. In fact, such giants would have been unthinkable. I remember when Saint Tropez was really a fishing village and mostly unclaimed swampland. Antibes was just a small port where the main basin was also swampland. When it was dredged to build the port, a lot of ancient coins were discovered. The IYCA quay as we know it today was a fuel tanker discharging berth and it backed onto a small shipyard with a slipway known as the Chantier Navale d’Antibes, managed by an 80

On my delivery days I enjoy the chance to meet and chat with crew members and have noticed the growing recognition of the environmental issues surrounding the industry. Unfortunately, whereas in the early days, harbour waters were pristine clean and clear, they look very dirty green or brown on hot days now, and there is often a smell of murky sewage. This can also be identified by the grey/brown watermark that surrounds the perimeters of every marina, big or small. This is due to the discharge of greywater that carries phosphates etc. that destroy the marine environment. Also, we always used to clean the teak decks by soap, scrubbing and elbow grease. Modern deck cleaning chemicals do the job, but contributes to water pollution.

WHAT ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS HAVE YOU SEEN IMPROVE?

Technology brings us highly technical marine sewage treatment plants on yachts, better refuse collection points in harbours, and plastic separation plants ashore. All this is being implemented quickly, but still not really fast enough. I notice how delicate and

I must admit that generally skippers and crew had little knowledge or understanding of budgets and environmental constraints. It was common practice to throw your plastic waste bags overboard whilst on passage. As awareness came to the industry so did certification, training and working disciplines. I also remember my first home in the French Alps where the local village rubbish tip fed into the rivers and streams that led to the sea!

INDUSTRY COMMENT Shouldn’t we also have an independent association to monitor the environmental aspect of our ports and coastline?

WHAT ECO-CRIMES DO YOU SEE NOW? HOW TO AVOID THEM?

HOW CAN WE ENSURE THAT CHANGES ARE IMPLEMENTED?

What really makes me cringe today is when yachts anchor in the Posidonia fields, trawling and ploughing the plants to destruction, after years of painfully slow growth, never to revive.

We have MYBA (Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association), which protects owners and charterers.

We have PYA (Professional Yachtsman’s Association), which protects and assist crew. Shouldn’t we also have an independent association to monitor the environmental aspect of our ports and coastline?

We need to look after this fabulous industry and ensure that our future generations can also enjoy this wonderful way of life.

I sometimes ask myself: Do they not know that more than 50% of the oxygen that we breathe comes from the sea? Posidonia has been called “the lungs of the Mediterranean” because it is one of the most important sources of oxygen on our coastal waters.

The charity ECOCREW tried to raise awareness of this problem but was advised by ruling authorities NOT TO upset the yachting industry, as we all need their tourism and spending power. This is understandable, but nevertheless we should be able to inform and react when it’s quite obvious that this is not good seamanship.

WHAT WE CAN DO

HOW DO YOU SEE CHANGES BEING IMPLEMENTED?

In my opinion, owners and management companies need to acknowledge their responsibility regarding the environment and recognise that they need to give their crew both the means and the encouragement to implement marine friendly procedures onboard. Crew should have the possibility of refusing products that are going to poison the oceans. People throughout the world use the oceans for work and for pleasure. It is our duty not only to protect the world’s waters, but to enable others to protect them too.

When yacht budgets are scrutinised and cut back, and the environmental argument is dismissed, I wish that profit would not blur the eyes from seeing the reality of the lessons our industry still needs to learn.
