#NEENTREPRENEURS

Welcome

WELCOME WELCOME TO THE ENTREPRENEURS’ FORUM’S AUTUMN CONFERENCE FOR WHAT PROMISES TO BE AN AMAZING DAY OF INSPIRATION FOR NORTH EAST ENTREPRENEURS.

Now in its tenth year, Global Entrepreneurship Week (#GEW2017) brings together partners in more than 170 countries, making it the largest festival of entrepreneurship in the world. We’re proud to fly its flag in the North East, helping people like you to grow your business, come up with new ideas and meet like-minded people. Fortune Favours the Brave is very much about getting under the skin of those who take chances and finding out what happens when you do because it’s only when you step out of your comfort zone or are faced with a seemingly ‘make or break’ moment that you’re really tested.

This is your chance to hear from those who have been there and done it before. It’s an opportunity to ask questions and to both learn and share with others who are growing dynamic businesses, with the ambition to drive them further. Focusing on how being brave and staying true to your beliefs can bring huge benefits to your company, it promises to be an inspirational day and a chance to catch up with over 200 of your fellow entrepreneurs, so please make the most of the opportunity.

KAREN LYNCH Belu

@BeluWater

Having previously pursued a corporate career, Karen became obsessed with waste and a desire to make a difference beyond satisfying shareholders in the traditional way. She explored the third sector and identified the opportunity to reinvent Belu. Under Karen’s leadership, Belu has set out to exemplify environmental standards in the bottled water industry. The business also pledged to donate all profits to end water poverty through an exclusive and contractual partnership with WaterAid. Through delivery of a series of industry firsts, Belu now offers the most ethical choice in water service, whether bottled mineral water or filtration and reusable bottles and carafes. Belu’s income is all from trading and, so far, it has enabled the business to pass £2.2m to WaterAid - transforming over 140,000 lives by providing access to clean water and safe sanitation. Karen’s personal mission is to inspire other businesses and individuals that there is ‘a better and kinder way to do business’ and ‘that through business we can solve some of the world’s problems at the same time’, through sharing the Belu and her personal stories and experiences.

12

AMAR LATIF Traveleyes

In partnership with

@theamarlatif

An entrepreneur and TV personality with an astonishing track record of facing up to major challenges, due to an incurable eye condition, Amar lost 95% of his sight by the age of 19. Through sheer determination he has managed to turn an unpromising tale of loss, into one of truly inspirational achievement. Amar became known to millions through the ground-breaking BBC2 reality series, Beyond Boundaries. Screened worldwide, this was a gruelling 220-mile trek on foot across the rugged interior of Nicaragua, from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast. Amar had to ford swollen rivers, cut through dense jungle, cross waterfalls, climb a 5,000 ft. active volcano and navigate the second largest lake in Latin America. In 2004, Amar founded Traveleyes, the world’s first commercial tour operator, specialising in holidays for blind as well as sighted travellers. Traveleyes has opened the holiday travel industry to millions of blind and partially sighted people around the world, giving them the opportunity to walk with lions in Africa, sail the Ionian Sea and ski down Europe’s highest mountains. Amar continues to lead many of these group explorations himself; uncovering the countless wonders that world travel offers the senses.

18

DESCRIBE YOUR COMPANY IN ONE SENTENCE: Traveleyes is a world unique company, offering worldwide travel to blind and fully sighted travellers where the sighted travellers simply guide and describe to a different blind partner for each day of the holiday, and in return, have their holidays costs subsidised by up to 50% by Traveleyes. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE? Establishing the initial concept, finding out how to make the pairings work, and spreading the word! WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? The fact that we have now opened up the world for thousands of blind and sighted travellers, allowing people to explore the world in new and exciting ways who may not have otherwise had the chance.

#NEENTREPRENEURS

GREAT IDEAS

“I take a lot of inspiration from my father, who travelled over to the UK from Pakistan with nothing, and, despite having three blind children, managed to set up a successful business.” WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST INFLUENTIAL FACTOR IN YOUR BUSINESS’ SUCCESS? The innovative way that we operate. I identified a real gap in the market. Independent world travel has been available for sighted people for centuries, and now blind people have access to the big beautiful world out there! WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR COMPANY IN FIVE YEARS? We want to keep growing across the world, taking adventures from all over! We are also planning on increasing the work that we do with charities, corporations and international schools, raising money and taking their members to be sighted guides on our trips.
