An active angel investor, Fiona founded Gabriel Investors in 2011 and to date has invested in several healthcare, consumer goods and food manufacturing businesses. Most recently, Fiona invested in global pharmaceutical PR, digital and design agency, ramarketing and is now working to support its growth ambitions in the US.

Today, Fiona chairs the Community Foundation, the largest in the UK, which over the last 30 years has given away over £100m to people and communities in Tyne and Wear and Northumberland. Alongside this, Fiona is also a trustee of the International Centre for Life. Having started her career as a pharmacist before establishing The Specials Laboratory, which in less than ten years was sold to United Drug Plc for over £20m, Fiona later became non-executive chair at SCM Pharma.

Fiona will be sharing the lessons she has learned in over 25 years of starting, scaling and supporting North East businesses.

Five years ago Alice Hall spent her lunchtime fulfilling eBay orders at the Post Office. Now, as leader of a fashion business, she finds herself sat alongside Gareth Bale, Rosie Huntingdon-Whitely and Emeli Sande as one of Forbes’ 2017 ‘30 Under 30, Europe’. From humble beginnings, the Pink Boutique fashion empire is a truly inspiring North East success story. The Group ships more than 4,000 products globally every day, with around 70 people employed at the 30,000 sq. ft. warehouse in Newcastle. Over dinner, Alice will be sharing how she spotted a gap in the market for glamorous outfits and has turned an initial investment of just £90 into sales of more than £22m, with the help of social media. Attributing almost 95% of sales to their social media channels, Pink Boutique has well over 1m

followers and a growth strategy that will keep them at the forefront of online developments for years to come. Of course it’s not all perfect, but being listed in the Fast Track 100 for a third year (this time at number 24) and with the vision to become a globally recognised brand, we’ve no doubt there’s a lot more to come from Alice in the next five years too.

One of the North East’s leading entrepreneurs, David Harrison has over 40 years of experience in business, employing well over 1,000 people. In 1997 David founded financial advice firm Positive Solutions. He grew the business to become the largest of its kind in the country, representing 1,900 independent financial advisors and generating a turnover of £114m, with profits in excess of £1m a month.

Never one to rest on his laurels, 2017 has been one of David’s busiest yet. Co-founder of northern business think tank Policy North, David also set up the Harrison Centre for Social Mobility, to give local people a hand-up towards achieving their potential. 2017 saw David honoured personally with awards for Tyneside and Northumberland Business Executive of the Year and North East Entrepreneur of the Year, while True Potential joined the Deloitte ‘Technology Fast 50’ list and was crowned European Business of the Year.

A chance conversation with his now business partner set the wheels in motion for the first of many business ventures. In 1992, Simon left the daily grind to begin building Lincoln & York, now the second largest private label coffee roaster in the UK. The Pipers story began in 2004 when Simon joined forces with farmers Alex Albone and James Sweeting in a quest to produce great tasting, quality crisps using local potatoes.

A farmer’s son and self-confessed ‘difficult’ teenager, Simon Herring began to find his feet at Oxford Polytechnic where an HND in Business was enough to land him a job with Cargill, the food, agricultural, financial and industrial products giant. Working as a trader on the ‘Futures’ floor, Simon moved into the coffee industry, via freight and cocoa, but after six years realised corporate life wasn’t for him.

Pipers has grown to become a significant business. Based in rural Lincolnshire, it employs over 90 local people, sells to 32 countries worldwide and has been named both in the Grocer’s 2017 Fastest 50 list, as well as being identified by the London Stock Exchange as one of ‘1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain’.
