hen people learn that I’m the Editor-in-chief of Entrepreneur Platform Magazine, they often ask, “How do you find such great entrepreneurs from around the world to feature and spotlight?” In this editor’s note, I will briefly explain just how. You see, as I go about my day, I interact with people because I’m interested in them. My goal is to get to know them and learn what they are passionate about. What about life excites them? Everyone has a story that if heard, could save a life, help move someone to a new level in business and ultimately change the world. Most of the time I find that they either own a business as an entrepreneur, want to become an entrepreneur or they’ve tried it and it didn’t work. From there, I focus on purpose, vision and execution. All entrepreneurs want to be recognized and want to increase their presence both locally and globally. One thing about entrepreneurs is that

we love to support one another. When I’ve featured one in the magazine, they always recommend someone else who would be a perfect fit and wants more global presence. As an example, in this issue you will travel all the way to India to meet International Model, Actor, Producer and Athlete, Mikki Koomar. This young man is truly impacting the world. I met Mikki through Lacie Cupani, our Jan/Feb cover feature. Mikki reached out to me and I immediately fell in love with his passion for life and people. It’s all about collaboration. I’m sure I will meet many more amazing entrepreneurs the same way. If you’ve been dreaming of becoming an entrepreneur, the stories in this magazine will inspire you to go for it. We are here as a community of new and seasoned entrepreneurs to support you in your endeavors.

Facing Your Giants OPHELIA NIXON UKE

W

Don’t allow your giants of 2019 to become your setbacks of 2020

e all have our own personal giants that we cannot escape, and must one day come face to face with. For some of you, your giant may be in the form of a person, or insurmountable problems, insecurities or doubts, that seems to rise continuously

You’ve got to utilize every resource you have available to you… with no end in sight. It almost begins to feel like the more you try the more you fall, or are destined to fail. Your giant is a roadblock that is designated to keep you in a place of depression, defeat, feeling oppressed, or bound to fears, which will hinder you from experiencing any type of positive growth. You’ve got to learn how to recognize the strategies and movements of your giants, because your giant is curtailed to fit your movements and your worries. Whereby breaking free becomes almost next to impossible, 4 | ENTREPRENEUR PLATFORM MAGAZINE | March/April 2020

because whatever it is that you are feeling is now heightened as it wreaks havoc on the way you begin to think, behave and even perceive things. Your giants will tell you that you aren’t qualified enough for the job or position you were seeking. It will cause you to be alienated from those who truly want to help in the attainment of your reaching to newer and higher heights. This means, it will make everything positive seem negative, turning your friends into foes, and your wins into losses. Your giant will make you begin to question your worth, it will have you comparing yourself to others, wherein you are comparing your worst to their best, which is never on an equal playing ground. It will even make you a people pleaser as you develop the mindset of, “this is the only way to have others see me as one of value”. But, I want to remind you of is that others can’t add value to you. Your value stems from confidence and self-worth, plus your unwillingness to be defeated by challenges and obstacles. Open up your eyes and see that within your hands lies the power to destroy what doesn’t work for you. Realize the time is now to choose your weapon, if your intention is to get rid of what hasn’t proven to work to strengthen you thus far, and whatever reinforces your insecurities or weaknesses. In this season we are no longer playing small, we are stepping out with the heavy artilleries, so we can play to our strengths,

whereby utilizing what we have in our hands. Quite frankly, we can’t continue to let old struggles reignite new warfares. Pull from your inner warrior and be aggressive, letting nothing or no one alter your vision, stop the progression of your destiny, or out the flames of your fire which is the onset of a legacy in the making. Take back the power from whatever your giant is. They or it, has no right to determine if and when you show up, or if you even show up at all. In this New Year we have to leave our mark on everything, holding nothing back. Wield your sword and begin to take down your Goliath’s one by one.

This is not a game of “patty cake, red light green light, or hide and go seek”. This is your future, the thing you’ve long dreamt of. You’ve got to utilize every resource you have available to you, so you walk away more empowered at the end of your battle than you were at the beginning.

Now, what tactics are you prepared to use to protect what you’ve planted for your Harvesting Season of Success?

THIS IS HOW YOU DEAL WITH YOUR GIANTS, YOU TAKE AIM AND NEVER STOP FIRING?

1.

4.

2.

5.

Make sure you show up for your battles ready to fight, you might not have a choice in what the battle is or who & what it’s against, or the time of it’s happening… however, you have the power to make sure you have the win! Be aggressive in taking back what the enemy has robbed you of…so whatever situation you approach go forth with a mindset of an expected return & then some!

3.

Be ready to battle in and out of season, because the enemy doesn’t take breaks, nor does upcoming problems care about what you may already be facing!

Stop running & giving fear free roam of your life..Your choosing to continuously run in the midst of your fight won’t make you victorious. It will only make you a prisoner of war or a casualty for the enemy & your naysayers!

Learn this…the opinions of others don’t matter. Only you alone are responsible for what you do or don’t do. Remember this every one will come with an input, but if you fall not one person will care enough to help you fight!

6.

Your co-workers may hate you, your family might despise you, understand that their dislike for you is merely based on the fact that your success has become a reflection of what they seemingly lack! Chaplain Ophelia Nixon-Uke

G. BRIAN BENSON

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE & HIGHLY APPRECIATED G. BRIAN BENSON

“P

atience is a virtue they say,” harrumph! “I want it done now,” I say! Luckily, I have never suffered from a lack of motivation and I will say that I was proud of myself as I surrendered into the process of creating and coordinating the layout and launch of my first children’s book “Steve The Alien” a few years ago. But it wasn’t always easy. And surrender doesn’t always mean that

I want it to put a smile on people’s faces and I want it to make them feel good… I am able to rid myself of the low level anxiety that runs through my system as I try to have everything come together, especially with a deadline looming. Working with others wasn’t very easy for me to do in the beginning. There were times during the creative process where I have had to wait for others to do their part of the job before I could continue with mine. My illustrator and layout person both had incredibly important and somewhat time-consuming tasks. And in the past, waiting could sometimes be really hard for me… because when I have a clear vision of how I want something to be, I want to 6 | ENTREPRENEUR PLATFORM MAGAZINE | March/April 2020

move like the speed of light until I get there. I get lost in the excitement of creating and the possibility of the idea. It’s like I am carried by a wave of creative energy that could at times be too much for others because they operate at a different speed. What I have learned throughout the years though, it’s these times of letting others do their job and giving them the space to do it, is where the true surrender comes into play for me. And you know what? They will do much better work not feeling like they have to rush a job. I realize sometimes there is a deadline, but more often than not that deadline was created by myself and my driven nature. What do I do to make it easier on myself? I love to hike the anxiety out of my system, not only does the exercise help, but being in nature also helps ground me. It’s the perfect combination. There are many other things we can do though. Work on a side project to stay occupied, take a few days off to refill your cup or go visit some friends you haven’t seen for a while. And you know what else? I am ok with some of this anxiety. It means that I care and it also means that I am excited. I am on the verge of sharing something that really means a lot to me and that I feel is really good. I want it to put a smile on people’s faces and I want it to make them feel good and I want you all to dig it because it was a joy to create. I was really proud of that story, the illustrations and it’s potential. It’s been a dream come true for me to share positive, fun and inspirational media with the world and that book was another step in that direction. Continued on page 7

PARANDA DAVIS

COMMON CREDIT MYTHS PARANDA DAVIS

T

he media, newspapers, and internet are full of information, but sadly, much of the information concerning credit is inaccurate. Let’s check out some common credit myths:

Credit Myth 1: “Opting out will increase your credit score.” This is something that goes back a long time, so let’s discuss what opting out is. “Opting out” refers to a method where you can choose to

…credit bureaus cannot sell your data. not have your information sold for prescreened offers. You’re familiar, of course, with prescreened offers – that’s when you get something in the mail that says, “You’re approved for this credit card!” We all get them every week. I imagine you generally respond by rolling your eyes and throwing them away, like most people do. The credit bureaus resell information in bulk to credit card providers. This system allows credit card providers to make offers in the mail to multiple people. Bear in mind, these credit card providers don’t actually get to see your individual files. The credit card companies 8 | ENTREPRENEUR PLATFORM MAGAZINE | March/April 2020

will give a generic example of what they want. They want people with an average FCRA score of “X” and have a set amount of credit cards existing. Then the credit bureaus will send the data to a third party on behalf of the credit card company for mail distribution. The credit card company never sees your data. They only know if you fit a certain demographic profile that they are targeting with that particular offer. If you opt out of prescreened offers, that has wide-reaching effects. It ultimately means that the credit bureaus cannot sell your data. If they can’t sell your data, well, your data is really not worth anything to them. So many people in the past thought they saw an increase in their credit score after an opt-out, but as someone who’s been in the middle of this industry for many years, there’s been nothing to prove that that’s ever actually taken place. There was, however, at least a reasonable-sounding premise behind this myth. It goes like this: if you’re opting out, saying that you don’t want credit, that you have enough credit, and you’re responsible for credit, therefore they’ll give you more on your credit score. But it was never calculated in your credit score that way, and it was never proven to be a fact that way. We’ve never seen any relation to that, and believe me, we watch everything VERY closely in this industry. We do, however, feel that opting out can help you when disputing, because we feel that there’s a potential for credit bureaus to segregate data that’s not worth anything to them - a “scrap pile,” if you will. We have seen an increase in the deletion rate for dispute rates for opting out. So, opting out is something that we definitely encourage you to consider.

PARANDA DAVIS

Credit Myth 2: “FRCA scores are locked in for six months, and they change every six months.”

Credit Myth 4: “Checking your own credit report harms your credit score.”

This is a complete myth. The FRCA score is based on the data that was available right then and there - from exactly when your report was pulled. In other words, it’s dynamic and constantly changing. The calculation is recalculated every time that the credit score is pulled, so it’s not good for any set length of time.

Most everyone at one point believed this myth, and more than likely you have as well. Most people do not realize the difference between a hard inquiry and a soft inquiry. A hard inquiry is processed by a lender to evaluate whether or not they want to give you new credit. That is the type of inquiry that will hurt your score; or that will affect your score. However, you can pull your credit report as much as you want, and it won’t affect your credit negatively at all. That’s a “soft inquiry,” and you can do this at any time without hurting your credit score!

Credit reports for lending, depending upon the lender, sometimes have a period of time that the lender will utilize the same credit report without pulling it again.

• Credit Myth 3: “I don’t need to check my credit report if I pay my bills on time.” Believing this one can really hurt you! The reality is that nearly eighty percent of files contain errors, so whether you pay your bills on time or not, you do need to check your report for errors, as well as any potential identity theft. After all, these errors are usually the fault of either the data furnishers or the credit ratings agencies themselves, and in no way reflect your own financial discipline and responsibility.

• Credit Myth 5: “Consolidating into a low interest credit card will increase your score.” Unfortunately, the interest rate of your card has no effect on your score at all. This is because of the communication ecosystem that the Credit Ratings Agencies run: this is data that simply never gets passed along and thus never has a chance to affect your credit score either way. We look forward to helping you to achieve your goals, and provide better opportunities for you and your family. Give us a call. We are standing by, ready to help!

KAREN ALBERT

3 Reasons Why Social Media Isn't Working for Your Business KAREN ALBERT Here are some of the most common missteps that I see: 1. You don’t know your audience This is crucial, because not having this part figured out means that you’re trying to talk to everyone, which means you’re really just shouting into the void and hoping that somebody might hear. If you’re unable to make a connection with people, then don’t count on being able to sell them anything. Understanding who your target audience is - what they want, what they need, where you fit in, etc. - is critical to maximizing your social media marketing performance. Once you are able to identify your audience, you can then also identify all the other businesses and/or loca establishments that cater to that same audience. Not necessarily a competitor, but rather one that attracts your audience. As an example, if you provide a service that caters to the edlerly, consider what other businesses cater

12 | ENTREPRENEUR PLATFORM MAGAZINE | March/April 2020

to the elderly. Locate those other businesses via your social media platforms and begin a virtual collaboration. Share their content on your social media page(s), refer their business to your community. These are all ways that will help you to increase your engagement with your audience.

2. You are not consistent In this new world of social media algorithms - and really, all along - being consistent is key to growing an audience. But to clarify, this doesn’t mean that you need to publish every single day. Being consistent means coming up with a schedule that works for you - then most importantly, sticking to it. Even if it doesn't feel like you're getting immediate results, posting regularly gives your audience a reason to keep coming back to your profiles, while it also helps to have fresh, relevant content when someone looks you up or comes across your business. The key to maximizing your social presence is strong messaging, and content that’s aligned with what your audience needs to see. Post regularly, keep your audience informed, and over time, you will gain more trust and credibility.

KAREN ALBERT

3. You are just trying to build a following

The Key Differentiator

Without being intentional, and thinking about whether you’re building an audience that’s right for your business, you’ll just have a room full of bodies. Numbers might look pretty, and make you feel good, but unless those people are likely to become paying customers, they're not helping your cause.

Here's the thing: The difference between people who say that social media doesn’t work and the ones who are gaining clients, making sales, and consistently growing their audience with quality leads from their social media profiles is simple. They have a process that works.

Building numbers also ruins your data - a major benefit of social media marketing. If you have 1000 Page followers, but 900 are, realistically, never going to spend money with your business, that means that all your analytics and audience insights are useless, making it even harder to establish a clear understanding of what your audience needs.

They’ve figured out what their audience wants to see, they deliver it on a consistent basis, and they are constantly observing and tweaking.

Yes, it takes time to establish brand awareness and build a following, but a following of people who are actually engaged in your message is far more valuable than chasing numbers in an effort to maybe, hopefully, impress somebody that comes across your profile. Audience numbers can be faked, which most consumers are now widely aware of. It's the content and quality of your business that's far more important, and will deliver better results in the long-run.

Although this may sound like a ton to do, it’s not. Here is a great online scheduling tool for only $10/month CINCHSHARE In reality if you’re spending more than an hour on social media a day, you’re probably just wasting time with “busy work”… and that's not beneficial for anyone. Break down the key tasks you need to complete each day, map out a schedule, formulate a plan based on your audience data. Then deliver, according to that. The key differentiator for those that are seeing social media marketing success lies in planning, and establishing a clear understanding of what your audience needs. i, my name is Kaelyn and I am the CEO of DBK. We make fizzy bath bombs and handmade bubbly soaps for children, teens, women and men.

I started my business because I have sensitive skin and as I get older my mommy tells me about how I need to care for my skin. I really liked getting bath bombs from the store however they would always irritate my skin or stain our bathtub. That experience gave me the idea to make my own soothing bath bombs that I could enjoy without the staining or skin irritation. I began to focus more on making all natural bath products that people can really enjoy. I love to create things that make people smile so I feel good knowing that my bath bombs and soaps not only smell good and makes your skin soft, they also make people smile. I am also learning about the different ways that essential oils can make your bath time relaxing and healthy as well.

About Me

1.

I am eleven years old and I love making things with my hands. I create and make everything from the latest slime combinations to jewelry to bath bombs and I even like building robots. As a member of the Destination Imagination STEAM team at my school, I always like to choose engineering or chemistry themed projects so that I can build and create something new and exciting for the judges.

2.

I love to read and I enjoy coloring. My favorite thing to ask for are crayons, colored pencils and markers. When we have book sales at our school, outside of the new books that I buy, I always get a new set of markers to color with.

3.

Chocolate is not my favorite sweet. I enjoy ice cream, and baking cakes, cookies and cupcakes but I am not a fan of chocolate. You should see the looks that I get when people find out that I have never eaten a chocolate Easter bunny. I also don’t eat a lot of meat. I get laughed at during lunchtime at school because I actually like to eat my vegetables.

4.

I created a PURSES for a PURPOSE collection drive where I collect used purses, clean them up, add positive messages to them and donate them to the battered women’s shelter in my neighborhood. These purses help with the back to work program at the shelter.

KAELYN CLARK-MIDDLETON

5.

I really enjoy making bath bombs and soaps because I can work with my hands and use chemistry to combine essential oils and other natural ingredients to create a mini spa at home! I think that almost everyone may be in need of relieving stress or just to relax so I started selling my bath bombs to help solve that issue. I also realized that anyone can start a business if they want to but they should make sure that the business is something that they enjoy.
