s we go to the press packing within the covers of AIP 'how life can be made comfortable and aesthetic' we are reminded of Sanganer which may have been on the outskirts of our home town once but not any more. It is sad that this part of Jaipur should have been witness to anger followed by destruction that is difficult to imagine.

K. Vikram Rastogi The world is shrinking into little pockets where population tends to get concentrated. Though the way to small focuses of large populations has been shown by the developed countries the rest of the world has traveled much faster along this way to extremely crowded cities. In the United States, New York has many high rise buildings and is a crowded city but traffic flows more freely than it does in the Thai city of Bangkok. A traveler by road from Newark Liberty International Airport, New Jersey, to John F. The incident raises basic questions regarding a city. How does a city come about and what can be done to make our larger home secure and beautiful? Here we try to answer some questions. People Sprawl, their Habitats Shrink The world is shrinking into little pockets where population tends to get concentrated. Though the way to small focuses of large populations has been shown by the developed countries the rest of the world has traveled much faster along this way to extremely crowded cities. In the United States New York has many high rise buildings and is a crowded city but traffic flows more freely than it does in the Thai city of Bangkok. A traveler by road from Newark Liberty International Airport, New Jersey, to John F. Kennedy Airport, New York takes about forty-five minutes (depending on the traffic) to go through New York and reach the JFK airport. But in Bangkok the commuter trying to reach a destination cannot tell how long the traffic will keep him on the road so he carries a bottle with him in the absence of his access for long to a restroom. In the two cities mentioned above the common thing is that the time spent on the road cannot be anticipated yet notice the difference between the requirements of the

two travelers in the two cities. Thus the developing parts of the world are rapidly carving out an increasingly urbanised world from what used to be basically a pastoral earth. Similarly the developed parts too are doing the same thing although at a slower pace. The slower pace can be attributed to greater development of the entire region as compared to the developing countries where the rural parts may lack basic infrastructure like electricity or piped water supply or a school system or a regular bazaar. The lack of infrastructure and absence of industry and market lead to poor savings and low capital is formed. Thus there is not much to invest; jobs are few so people are in a flux of migration. In other words they tend to sprawl, stretching from the rural to the urban regions. Gradually more and more find steady sources of livelihood and set up stable urban homes. As a result cities and mega cities have sprung up in the developing parts. With a continuous in pour the cities are bursting at the seams. There is congestion of people, of vehicles, of food stalls, of shops. Schools, hospitals, colleges, hotels, guest houses, institutions and hostels increase manifold. And industries become a big base for employment as the recent migrant learns new skills. Some migrants bring their skill set along with them to find better remuneration. Greater demand on the urban land raises the value of urban real estate. Sharing the expensive land among the larger numbers makes more economic April 2013

EDITORIAL sense so high rise construction becomes the trend. There is further concentration of people in small spaces. The need for recreation centres, children's playgrounds, public baths, water fronts and their improvement and sports facilities bring abo u t a l l t h e s e g r e e n creations. Yet more are needed. The requirement of land of the city rises so it needs extension fast. If the authorities cannot act with speed the problems of high density of population will be aggravated. The city has to have a proper model. Generally a grid pattern where streets cut at right angles, or a radial pattern where streets conve r g e t o s o m e c e n t r al point, is established. Jaipur is one of the earliest planned cities; the Maharaja followed the grid pattern to make his capital an outstanding example not only for that old world but the planned city of jaipur has continued to be 'a talk' of the modern world today as well. Some of the waste is inert like stone dust or stone pieces from construction. These can be used to make the city aesthetically attractive a n d s o o t h i n g s o that there is some escape from the day's tension. A great example is

Chandigarh's Rock Garden designed by Nek Chand. In cities and probably else where too a lot revolves around economy while social reasons have receded to the background. The worst is t h a t a p e a c e f u l a n d calm mind that derives from deep tranquility born from a devotion to higher Self even though every Indian is so particular in having His presence in office and at home for worship. The result is that tolerance has become a casualty. Inconsequential happenings have become capable of igniting sparks that wound fellow h u m a n s a n d b u r n p r operties. In Sanganer factories were burned just over parking a motorcycle, the reports say, parking by another community but the question arises Is not every community of humans? The teachings of ancient seers and saints of India have to be brought out from our pujasthans and put into practice. Some people will hav e t o m a k e t h i s b e ginning and rebuild the social fabric where merit finds its due place and morality is the code of conduct. All will be well once more.

Berger Paints - Making competition see red Berger Paints (Berger), second-largest in the Indian decorative paints industry, has been expanding EBITDA margin 25-30bps since FY09 through aggressive branding. Realisations too are on an uptrend (up 100-200bps) with the proportion of premium products rising in its portfolio. We expect earnings to rise at 21.5% CAGR in FY1315, and initiate coverage on the stock with Buy. Concerted branding initiatives. Berger has expanded its product kitty to include high-margin exterior paints and emulsions, two fastest-growing segments of the industry. Moreover, it has curtailed discounts on products (from 4.9% to 3.6%) and is focused on creating a strong brand value. Over FY03-12, it hiked

ad spend from 3.1% to 5.3% of net sales. 'Paints' a structural growth story. Per-capita paint consumption in India is a meagre 1.3 litres (global average 7.3 litres). Over 50% of the 220m households in India do not use paints. With pucca houses rising at 5.4% CAGR in the past decade, we foresee the Indian paint sector growing ~1012% in volume and ~4-5% in prices over CY12-20. Also, the auto industry has reported 13% volume CAGR in CY01-12. Berger, with its extensive product bouquet and established position in the traditional categories (enamel and emulsions, accounting for 50% and 17% respectively of the industry), is poised to capitalize on the same. Investments to pay back now. Over FY05-12, Berger expanded capacities at 13% CAGR, and also took to outsourcing (14% of sales) to tap the growing demand. By FY16, it plans to add 0.41m MT of production capacity to 0.28m MT now. These initiatives, together with an expanded distribution network, have resulted in higher cost. However, revenues will follow soon. Our take. We value the stock at a target price of Rs.228 and PE of 26x Sept 14e earnings. In the past 12 years, it has traded at 34% discount to Asian Paints. We, however, expect this discount to narrow to 10% on Berger's market share gains and better RoE. Risks. Higher raw material prices.

Natural Stone vs. Porcelain Tile

Are you planning a home remodel project? Maybe you need to update the flooring throughout your home or remodel your kitchen or bathroom? Today there are so many materials to choose from. The most popular in hard surfaces is natural stone, and porcelain, a man-made material. Many man-made materials look like natural stone, there are just a few differences to consider. Here are a few tips to help you decide which one to prefer. What is the difference between natural stone tile vs. ceramic/porcelain tile? Both materials are of excellent quality and durability. Natural stone is varied in color and no two pieces ever look the same. It is unique and timeless. Many ceramic/porcelain tiles are made to mimic natural stone. They are a bit controlled in the range and variation, however, many people have difficulty distinguishing between natural stone and ceramic/porcelain tile due to the advanced technology used today. Natural stone requires periodic maintenance, as it needs to be sealed once a year, and it is more expensive to install due to the fact that each piece has different thickness, therefore, it needs to be carefully installed by "floating" the material. Ceramic/porcelain tile requires no extended upkeep, is virtually maintenance free, and is less expensive to install.

Natural Stone vs. Porcelain Tile

How should I decide which type of product to use? The application (for use in a bathroom shower, floor, etc.) and the traffic levels it will experience will determine the type of tile you should select. Be sure to research what’s the best application for your remodel project - Is the design project you're doing a residential or a commercial remodel? There are different levels of wear and durability - ask your interior designer to guide you properly. How big of a grout joint should be expected for tile/stone? For non-rectified tiles, 1/8 is the smallest grout joint we recommend for ceramic/porcelain tile. For stone that has a straight edge, 1/8 to 1/16 grout joint is recommended. If the stone is tumbled, then your grout joint will be larger. Many factors determine the size of the grout joint, therefore it is important to discuss this with your tile installer. Will setting tile on a diagonal require more material? Yes, typically more material is required when tile is set on a diagonal versus a straight-set. Approximately 20% should be allowed for a diagonal tile design. Standard rule of thumb is to order at least 10% on top of what you need to allow for cuts. What is the best way to maintain my granite/marble/stone/tile? For everyday cleaning, simply use a Ph-balanced natural stone cleaner to care for your stone. Natural stone needs to be sealed after installation. There are many sealers on the market that are made specifically for natural stone as well as companies that specialize in sealing and maintaining natural stone. Should I be concerned about radon in granite? No. Scientific studies have found that granite countertops pose no significant radon or radiation risk. While it is true that some types of granite do emit radon gas, the studies have shown that even the most active test samples of granite most commonly used in US countertops contribute emissions that are below the levels requiring EPArecommended remediation. And most fall below what the EPA would consider "background levels" of radon.

Natural Stone vs. Porcelain Tile

Do I need to seal my granite countertops? Yes, granite countertops should be sealed periodically. In a new installation, ask your installer if the countertop has been sealed and what product was used. If it has not been sealed, then use a penetrating sealer made for granite. Sealing granite will provide a barrier that will give you time to clean up spill before it penetrates the stone. On an average your granite surfaces should be sealed every one to three years. Higher traffic areas may need to be sealed more often. How do I keep the grout clean? Grout cleaners are available for stubborn stains. Remember to have your installer seal your grout after installation to keep a barrier from spills and stains. How do I repair cracked tile or grout? Cracked tile will need to be replaced. This is another reason to order additional tile to store in case one piece cracks. It's also important to use material ordered from the same dye lot to ensure that the colors match. Cracked grout can be removed with a grout saw and then re-grouted.

Can the holes in travertine be filled? Yes, and it is recommended to fill the holes to prevent cracking in natural stone. When the installer sets your floor, they will fill the voids with the grout color of your choice.

A modern home with white interior and minimalist design in Varna, Bulgaria Here is an inspiring project from Varna, Bulgaria. Varna is a major city and it is located on the Black Sea. This comfortable and modern home with white interior and minimalist design, which we show is intended to serve as a second home owners in the summer. In fact, the unique design of the house is determined by two main factors. First, it is located near the sea. This implies that the apartment will be used during the vacation months. Architects by INDESIGN bet on a funny accent. Here you can find a great solution for the interior, which combines living, bedroom and hallway in an open plan, using minimalist design. In fact, residents have chosen a more refined interior, less furniture, open spaces and predominant white colour for the walls. The illuminated ceiling used integrated LED lighting, and furniture is in white mat. Also in the same colour are blinds, switches and sockets. The ideal contrast is achieved thanks to the natural wood flooring oak. You can also enjoy the abstract paintings that fit perfectly in the minimalist design. A sliding door separates the bedroom from the other areas. The kitchen focuses on island, which has a square-shaped.

The dimensions are 1.6 to 1.6 meters. There is a sink, dishwasher and washing machine in the room. The table can be hidden under the kitchen island after a meal. The wardrobe, which has an additional function to divide the living room and hallway, can also be used on both sides. Thanks to the fact that the water heater is built into the wall, there is more space in the bathroom. In fact, the boiler can be turned on from the living room, as the switch is located in a cupboard. The living room is also very nicely furnished; it has a coffee table, which is assembled from two pallets with glass top. Naturally, the coffee table is in white. As you can see from the pictures, this home really predispose to an amazing holiday and pleasant emotions. April 2013

It is about Cobra Towers, which was to be built in Kuwait - a truly spectacular project, which represents two majestic towers, wrapped around each other in a form of large snakes. Unfortunately, the photos that now we show you are nothing more than a computer generated concept, but according to some sources, it comes to a legitimate project from 2008, which, however, never has been implemented.

It is said that the building was originally designed for the corporate giant Infosys and that it had to be built to rotate and thus it can recreate an incredible effect, similar to a moving spiral. What is happened, however, that this project has not been started; it remains a mystery to this day. Photos of the "ghost tower", however, still circling the Internet space and arouse interest and admiration. Who once is "saw" Cobra Towers he cannot forget it easily. It is high time from Infosys to unravel the mystery, and, of course, the best option, it is the project really to be realised.

DECORATING

Wallpaper Decorating Tips How to Choose Wallpaper for Home What type of wallpaper will be best suited for your home? We will try to help you answer this question with some wallpaper decorating tips. According to many of the designers, the wall, to which the window is located, should stand out from the other walls in the room with different colour wallpaper. This rule is especially appropriate when the window is smaller and it does not take much of the area of the wall. If the window is the only source of daylight in the room, then the wall remains in the shadows and appear darker. That is why, on this wall is better to put wallpaper in light colours. In the rooms where the walls have more bends and angles, as for example in the attics, it is most appropriate to use

wallpapers with smaller and not very bright patterns. In addition, in terms of rooms with a north statement or dark rooms, the appropriate wallpaper colour schemes are the ones with warm and cheerful hues such as yellow, orange, and red. Thus, the interior is more comfortable and 38

generally is more pleasant to the senses. However, when choosing the colour of wallpaper for rooms in which we permanently live, it is better to choose more unsaturated shades of these colours. Here are some facts. The use of bright shades of yellow colour in the living room will make you nervous and unbalanced. Of course, not talking about children's rooms, where these tones are strongly recommended. When you need to choose wallpaper for rest rooms, here talking about mostly the sleeping areas, it is better to use pale pastel colours. Their effect is calming and relaxing. Avoid the colour red because it can cause insomnia. Unlike red, the blue colour works well in a bedroom interior. Blue is known for its calming effect. Pastel shades of yellow, green, turquoise, or bright shades of violet. When selecting wallpaper with saturated colours, you should approach with caution. It is known that dark colours always make rooms to look smaller and closer. The same effect is of saturated hues of yellow, orange, or bright blue. If you want to feel more relaxed in your home, then you can bet on green. Nevertheless, be careful, because people who spend too much time in such an environment are able to acquire pale tan face! WORKS WITH COLOR

The husband-and-wife team of Katarzyna and Tomasz Widawscy favor minimalist, white interiors. But their clients, a married couple with two young children, asked that bright color figure prominently in the 970-square-foot Warsaw apartment Widawscy Studio Architektury was designing for them. So, the architects negotiated a happy medium between monotone and polychrome with a few graphic elements inspired by Pop Art. But first, the layout needed tending to. The architects merge dliving functions into a single loft-like space: Cooking, dining, socializing, work, and play commingle in the brightly lit public half. The private half is given over to the master suite and children's bedroom and bath, along with numerous closets. A small entry hall terminates in a mirrored wall that bounces daylight throughout the compact apartment. The envelope is predominantly white walls and red oak flooring. Color is introduced gently at the entry via dove-gray porcelain floor tiles, which reappear to demarcate the kitchen. Bolder hues turn up in small doses: The lime green of a pair of stools in the foyer is echoed in the two cabinets above the kitchen sink, the living area's rug, and the wall tile in the kids' bathroom. Pattern emerges through wallcovering selections: a swath of exuberant stripes in the living area, a convoy of toy trucks in the children's bedroom, a black-andwhite cityscape in their bathroom, and soothing damask in the master bedroom. "It has a glamorous vintage style," Katarzyna Widawscy says of the latter. The entryway's graphic wallpaper pleases everyone: it has the subtle color palette Widawscy Studio likes, while its words are helping the clients' children learn English.

Porcelain tiles, custom wallcovering, and a ceramic basin outfit the children's bathroom.

COMMUNITY HOSPITAL IN MCCOOK, NEBRASKA The Omaha, Nebraska-based HDR Architecture, which ranked #1 in Modern Healthcare's 2012 Annual Construction & Design Survey of Healthcare Architects, had more than just adaptability in mind when designing the Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska.

The Omaha, Nebraska-based HDR Architecture, which ranked #1 in Modern Healthcare's 2012 Annual Construction & Design Survey of Healthcare Architects, had more than just adaptability in mind when designing the Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska. "In today's healthcare reform environment, the most challenging facility design issue is adaptability to changing models of care delivery," says Hank Adams, AIA, ACHA, EDAC, the firm's Director of Healthcare. "Well-designed healthcare facilities should serve as a flexible platform, where the changing clinical and functional needs can adapt with minimal cost and impact to operations. A modern healthcare facility will likely be repurposed and

renovated multiple times during its full lifecycle." The Community Hospital has 25 private rooms with residential-like laminate wood floors, and paneled headwalls to store staff supplies and equipment. Flatscreen HDTVs on walls painted in soft shades of green and rust blend with the wood accents. And there's ample family and caregiver space, including sleeper couches in each room and lounge areas stocked with snacks and drinks. Patient rooms are positioned in a symmetrical rhythm along a long corridor. Located directly outside of each patient room is a viewing window with blinds allowing nurses to monitor two rooms at a time, while working from a small recessed desk. Decentralized caregiver workstations can be found throughout the facility. Safety and security features are in place everywhere, monitored by key card access. Carpeted public hallways are flanked with stone accents while caregiver areas are designed with color-coded laminate wood floors. Staff-only areas used for surgeries are on floors made with a mix of poured tile without seams to prevent bacteria from lodging in the cracks. “In this new era of healthcare reform, our clients are clearly seeking greater value from their investments in new healthcare facilities," says Adams. Valued measure by return on investment, not just construction cost. "This places emphasis on creative design solutions which truly maximize operational efficiency, space utilization, and functional flexibility while maintaining a distinctive patient-centered environment. Great healthcare design finds the right balance." April 2013

CREATIVE OFFICES

CREATIVE OFFICES!

Ogilvy & Mather office by M Moser Associates, Jakarta Global advertising firm Ogilvy & Mather recently consolidated its various Jakarta offices into a single, seamless, creativityinspiring office environment with the help of M Moser Associates. The Needs And The Plan Ogilvy & Mather was scattered throughout Jakarta and made the decision to take over two consecutive floors of Sentral Senayan III, a modern 28-storey office tower in Jakarta's central business district. M Moser Associates' Kuala Lumpur team, led by Ramesh Subramanium, began the project by investigating the needs and observing how O&M employees worked. Subramanium notes that, "In terms of planning, they needed two distinct types of space to support their ways of work: one very open, and the other more segregated. There was also a need for a large, multipurpose area that could be used for everything from dining and relaxation to intimate discussions, or even large 'town hall' meetings with all staff members." The reception and open-plan work area would be located on one level, while the cafe and other work areas would be located on the other. 54

CREATIVE OFFICES

A Calming Interior An important aspect of the office's design was to create a calm and stress-free environment where employees and guests can escape.

"The whole idea was to create a sharp contrast to what's outside," says Ramesh. "Outside, the traffic might be really bad, and maybe it takes a long time to get to work. You might be stressed out before you even get to work. But when you enter this reception, there's a sense of calm. Your blood pressure drops, and it's like you just walked into a spa." Wooden tones set against white walls and modern fixtures set a minimal yet warm tone throughout the boardroom, reception, and work areas.

CREATIVE OFFICES

A Place For Everything Though the office has standard features, M Moser Associates provided a large, fun, and open meeting space near the cafe that can be used for dining, collaborating, and talking. The space also accommodates larger town-hall style meetings and has a slide of course. The architects note: "Whether they have strolled or slid down, upon landing in the cafĂŠ, users can choose from a wide variety of settings, each offering unique qualities to suit their needs and purposes. For those who require a modicum of privacy for their discussions, a circular timber platform with seating for six beckons. Curved panels of fabric mesh slide along a ringshaped overhead rail to partly enclose the space on demand. Not far away is a long, narrow space enclosed on three sides and presenting the option of cosy, cafĂŠ-like seating. For those who simply need a place to take a breather and relax, a series of 'daybeds' are located against the window wall, complete with fabric curtains which drop down from the ceiling to shield them from the rest of the space." Though the office was mainly intended to organize staff into a central location, it ended up providing an inspiring space where employees can not only work, but thrive.

Beautiful and Relaxing Bathroom Design Ideas Relaxation can be achieved in a variety of forms. For today we put together a collection of 30 amazing bathroom designs that are meant to release pressure. Whether it is the shape of the bathtub that makes a difference, the inspiring decorative objects or the view that can be admired, these bathrooms all have something in common with relaxation. Some interiors are rich in green arrangements, which add freshness and invigorate the place. We also tried to find a few bathroom designs that have a special color theme. We noticed that wood has a great effect in modern decors- take the first picture for example- as it adds authenticity and personality. Windows are also of major importance, as they have a huge influence on the aesthetics and atmosphere of a room. Diagonal windows add a dramatic touch and are welcomed in case there is an inclined wall near by. Most of the bathrooms in the pictures below are modern, but you will also notice a few classic elements that combine perfectly with the contemporary arrangements. Have a look and tell us what you think about this collection of bathroom designs. Take your time, as each interior has a lot to offer.

Imposing Sustainable 28-Storey Tower in Hong Kong: 18 Kowloon East

18 Kowloon East is a massive tower integrated in the skyline of Hong Kong, designed by Aedas and serving various space and living purposes. According to the architects, "the project is a 28storey mixed-use building with offices, retail spaces and a car-park. With the building located in a community with dense industrial blocks, instead of providing another office tower entirely wrapped in a coolly glazed skin, the design investigates the possibility of providing an environmentally sustainable design in such an industrial area. A design with efficient office floor plates and a rational box were requested by the client. With 'green' as the theme, the final design introduces extensive planting at the car-park floors located at the lower portion of the tower. In addition to the visually greening effect to the neighborhood, the planting also filters the air and improves the air quality within the car-park. Hopefully, the suspended particulates in the air can be reduced and the design is able to provide car-park users a more pleasant experience". How would you comment on this building's design, considering its context.

World's Largest Underground High-Speed Rail Station

Meant to connect Hong Kong to Beijing, the Express Rail Link West Kowloon Terminus is said to become the largest underground high-speed rail station in the world. This stunning modern concept was designed by Andrew Bromberg of international architecture studio Aedas and its completion is programmed for 2015. In three years time, the huge 4,628,481 square feet (430,000 square meters) contemporary terminal in central Hong Kong will be prepared with 15 tracks for high-speed trains reaching maximum speeds of 124 mph.

Helping travelers get from one city to the other in 48 minutes opposed to the current 100 minutes train ride, the dazzling terminal is also an example of how far technology and architecture have come together. Starting with the first impression, this undulating building will change the city's face - promising to proudly display Hong Kong's bold and vanguard character. Rising 148 feet high above the surroundings, the structure's roof line acts as dynamic-shaped pedestrian trails alongside green spaces. This park/terminal hybrid fabricates a promised view of the future we can't wait to see it finished and on-line.

Incredible Underground Residence in Switzerland

Have you ever thought how it would be like to live in a bunker or an underground tunnel? Well, today we bring you the upgraded version of that, which is an all-equipped underground home. Situated in the Swiss village of Vals, deep in the mountains, the house is very hard to spot, which makes for a perfect gateway. The unusual architecture plan comes from SeARCH and Christian Muller Architects, and includes all the facilities a common house has, such as a guest room, an entertainment area, but also "specialized" interiors like an underground pathway. The entrance is a wide oval opening that you are driven to by some traditional stairs made in stone. Large windows make it noticeable and draw attention to the inside dĂŠcors- that is when the people living there are up for some company. April 2013

Earth House Estate L채ttenstrasse

E

arth houses is a project designed by Peter Vetsch and are based on the interpretation of an environmentally conscious, ecological and progressive architecture. The pictures from this post are with a house named Earth House Estate L채ttenstrasse, that is located in Dietikon, Switzerland. Compared to traditional residential houses built on the ground, the aim of building an earth house is another: Not to live under or in the ground, but with it. The earth-house concept uses the ground as an insulating blanket that efficiently protects it from rain, low temperatures, wind and natural abrasion. An earth house does not have to be built under the ground, it can be placed onto naturally grown terrain.

The earth house is a flexible construction which can be built according to the wishes of its owners, fulfilling the need for individuality, environmentally friendly construction and energy saving. They stand out due to their closeness to nature and allow an experience beyond the usual four walls and their right angles. The earth house concept uses its surroundings as an advantage - the surroundings are not adapted to the building, the house is shaped in order to preserve the natural environment.

Vastushastra

About Vastu 'Vas' means 'to dwell' or 'to occupy'. Vastu means 'dwelling place.' Vastu Shastra is the set of guidelines prescribed by the Rishis or learned men of ancient India for planning and constructing our dwelling places which range from our homes, 72

cities, states, countries and eventually extend to our planet and the universe! Nature consists of Panchabhutam, the five elements - Akasham or Sky, Vaayu or Air, Agni or Fire, Bhumi or Earth and Jalam or Water April 2013

VASTU

The shastras or the ancient Indian texts on science tell us that cosmic energy has a specific influence on living beings.

vastu in its pure form and also to pacify skeptics who question the efficiency and validity of vastu shastra. Plants and animals live in perfect harmony with nature. But we human beings, the superior beings that inhabit the earth, have forgotten how to keep peace with our surroundings. If we can modify our homes to harness the energy of the cosmos in such a way that our homes are in complete harmony with our bodies it can help us to succeed in all our endeavors. Due to the magnetic properties of the earth, the needle of a compass always points to the north. Since vastu is based on the permanent property of the earth namely inclination towards the north, the effect of vastu is universal. Plan Your Home Everyone dreams of owning a home. To make this dream a reality, we should first consult an experienced architect and plan the house. We should then approach a good Vasthusasthram consultant and adopt necessary changes in the plan of the prospective site. Some points to be kept in mind while planning your home There are eight directions - East, West, North, South, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and southwest. lThere are specific positions for everything including jewelry and money. lWhile sleeping, the head should be placed towards the South for good health or the East to be blessed by God. Never place your head towards the North. lKitchens, bedrooms, dining rooms, prayer rooms, store rooms etc. have specific positions. lAll plants have medicinal value if used correctly. In the garden, plants like the holy Basil (tulsi), Neem, the Bael (vilwa) etc have to be placed as per Vastu shastra. l

Bed Rooms Everyone sleeps for an average of 8 hours per a day. i.e. 1/3 of a day. This would mean that we spend roughly 240 hours of a month sleeping, that is 10 days. In a year, we would sleep for 120 days or 4 months and that would amount to 20 years of sleep in 60 years! Hence the bedroom is the most important room in a house.

Five elements reside in nature in specific proportions. Vastu Shastra involves the alignment of these five basic elements according to the law of nature. The effects of these five elements have to be studied to appreciate the science of April 2013

Market Overview - The ideal office.... With the newly unveiled 2012 Oman Budget, the real estate industry in the Sultanate is clearly in for a prolonged spell of buoyant growth. Investors and developers are taking their cue from the Omani government's decision to ramp up spending this year to a record $10 billion - an increase of 8.7% over the previous year's total spend. Estimated expenditure over the current 8th Five Year Plan (2011-2015) is also projected at a staggering $54 billion, which is up 26.4% over the initial plan estimates. These figures point to one unmistakable fact: the promise of a strong uptrend in economic growth, which in turn will drive investment in, among other areas, the construction and real estate sector, and most notably the commercial office arena. As is well known, a growing economy inevitably triggers an influx of foreign firms, while fuelling the expansion of local businesses. Demand for office space across all market segments is projected to surge as the Omani economy enters a phase of energetic growth. 79
