SPOLIGHT

Special Scoop with Pr. Aziz KOUR

Introduction & Background

I am Professor Aziz Kour, a full professor at ENSIAS specializing in Moroccan cultural identities through both visual and textual analysis, with extensive publications in this field. Beyond academia, I am also a creative fiction writer who has published two short story collections: "Reflections of a Lone Man" offering philosophical insights on ordinary Moroccan life, and "Nothing Stays Forever the Same" (2023), which presents my mature perspective on modern Morocco. I am currently working on two projects simultaneously: a memoir titled "A Teacher of English Made in Morocco," chronicling my experiences as a teacher of English, and a short novel called "Entangled Lives" .

Career Journey

My teaching career began with eight years as a middle school teacher of English, followed by three years in high school before joining ENSIAS. Throughout my twenty-two years of teaching English in Morocco, I've embraced learning from mistakes, noting that "what is experience? It's the name we give to our mistakes."

A key insight I've gained is that Moroccan students are exceptionally smart when their intelligence is respected. I identify a fundamental issue in our education system: sidelining learners when they should be central to the teaching process. I advocate for a learner-centric approach that aligns teaching methods with students' thinking and values their feedback.

Writing & Literary Pursuits

Books Recommendatio

"to fail is not to fall, but to

My passion for writing emerged in my late teens and early twenties, beginning with poetry in Arabic, French, and later on English. I describe writing as "more of a let-go experience" that started in the late 1980s and early 1990s through diaries, poems, and reflections capturing my perspective as a young Moroccan student. For me, writing served as an "escape strategy" and form of therapy when facing problems I couldn't share, allowing me to feel heard even if only by paper. Balancing creative pursuits with academic responsibilities is challenging - I prioritize family and teaching first, typically writing in quiet coffee shops after lunch or during summer holidays, sometimes while listening to music I enjoy or simply to my own bones so to speak.

mendations

emain where you fell."

Writing & Literary Pursuits

I offer a diverse list of book recommendations for engineering students:

1."The Holy Kuran " (recommending reading it with understanding of its deeper meaning)

2."Sophie's World" for those interested in philosophy

3."The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People"

4."The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck"

5."The Magic of Thinking Big"

6."Your Fast Lane to Wealth"

7."The Paradox of Choice"

8."The Cemetery of Forgotten Books" (a fantasy novel recommended to me by a student, which I enjoyed)

9."The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho

10.A collection of short stories by Abdelmajid Benjalloun entitled "Wadi Addimae"

11."Libérez votre cerveau" (in French)

Writing & Literary Pursuits

I advise students to focus on character building and emotional intellignence alongside technical skills. Many struggle with self-awareness and value others' judgments too highly - I encourage them to filter constructive feedback from destructive criticism. I emphasize having faith in oneself, developing a positive self-image, and practicing selflove, reminding them "you are better than you think you are."

For success, I prioritize discipline first, followed by smart and hard work, with luck playing a small role. I advocate for steady progress, noting "anything that comes overnight goes overnight." For students struggling with academic pressure, educators should show more empathy and coordinate better to avoid overburdening them. I believe professors should view students as people in the process of growth—not making their journey easy, but helping them develop slowly and surely.

Entrepreneurship Experience

While not disclosing the specific nature of my business venture, I share key lessons from my entrepreneurial experience, which spanned from the early 2000s until 2019, ending with the COVID-19 pandemic. I emphasize that entrepreneurship is not easy, and success requires significant effort, strategic thinking, a great team, perseverance, capital, and a refusal to give up.

I encourage viewing failure as part of the process rather than an endpoint, stating that "to fail is not to fall, but to remain where you fell." I also note that entrepreneurship is not as glamorous as it's sometimes portrayed, mentioning that only about 5% of business students successfully start businesses.

Closing Thoughts

In my closing remarks, I emphasize the importance of reading, stating that "a leader was once a reader" and that "leadership is a twin to readership."

I express appreciation for the ENSIASMAG team's work, noting that while challenging, their efforts could lead to significant future growth, potentially taking the magazine international. I suggest creating a website to expand its reach. I conclude by emphasizing the value of diverse voices, stating that "the voice of everybody matters, and the voice of our students truly matters."

I believe that when people can read what various professionals think, humanity becomes more aligned, and I hope my spontaneous ideas will inspire students.

FASHION

SERVES

AS A MEDIUM FOR INDIVIDUALS TO ARTICULATE THEIR DISTINCT IDENTITIES AND PERSONALITIES.

<Step back in time and immerse yourself in the world of vintage fashion.=

Erasmus+ is the European Union's initiative designed to support education, training, youth, and sport across Europe and beyond. It provides young people and students with incredibleopportunitiestostudy, volunteer, andengageincultural exchange experiences. A significant benefit of the Erasmus+programisitsfinancial support, with grants often covering costs such as flights, visa fees, and accommodation. This financial support significantly reduces barriers, makinginternationalexperiences moreaccessible.

Nada EL Annasi,
Software Engineer at ENSIAS,

Erasmus+ offers several pathways for you to gain international experience: Short-term Mobility (Mobilité Internationale): This allows students at Moroccan higher education institutions (public or private) to spend 2 to 12 months studying or interning in Europe as part of their degree. It's open to Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD students, covering costs like flights, visa, and accommodation if there is an agreement between your university and a European institution.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM): For holders of a higher education degree, this program allows you to study a full Master's in Europe over 2 years. The program involves mobility between at least three universities in a minimum of two different countries. It covers tuition, travel, and living costs and is open to all specialties with no age limit or rigid CGPA requirements.

European Solidarity Corps (Volontariat): Young people aged 18 to 30 can volunteer or work on aid projects in Europe. Expenses are covered, providing an opportunity to make a difference and broaden horizons.

Youth Exchanges (Échange de Jeunes): This program brings together groups of young people aged 13 to 30 from different countries for 5 to 21 days to meet, live together, and work on common projects through various activities. These exchanges are also expense-paid.

The efforts and experiences of inspiring individuals demonstrate that participating in Erasmus+ leads to significant academic, professional, and personal growth. It truly confirms that, once Erasmus+, you are forever Erasmus!.

Lazy and Dumb?

A Software Engineering Perspective from Morocco

HOW CAN MOROCCAN STUDENT OVERCOME THIS OVERWHELMED PRESSURE OF AI ?

From my experience, AI tools have significantly simplified many academic tasks for Moroccan students. While this efficiency brings obvious benefits, I've noticed several concerning patterns that deserve consideration:

The research by Abbas et al. (2024) aligns with what I've observed— excessive reliance on ChatGPT correlates with memory loss and procrastination. Many of my classmates who depend heavily on AI for academic work display a reduced ability to retain information and develop critical thinking skills.

However, this isn't simply about AI being harmful or helpful. The key factor is how students engage with these tools. When used thoughtfully as an assistant rather than a replacement for learning, AI can enhance education. The problems arise when we allow AI to think for us rather than using it to augment our thinking.

In the Moroccan context, where educational resources have traditionally been limited, AI offers unprecedented access to knowledge. Yet I've also witnessed students using it to bypass essential learning processes, requesting complete solutions rather than guidance.

The solution isn't rejecting AI but developing a balanced approach. We need to integrate AI literacy into our curriculum, teaching students to use these tools strategically while maintaining independent thinking.

As McGehee's (2024) research suggests, combining AI as both a tool and facilitator yields better results than either approach alone.

As AI continues to evolve, we must ensure it enhances rather than diminishes our cognitive abilities. The goal should be using technology to elevate our intelligence, not outsource it.

As a Software Engineering student at ENSIAS, I've observed AI's massive impact on education in Morocco over the past three years. Morocco has emerged as the second-largest userofChatGPTglobally, trailing only India. This trend raises important questions about how AIaffectslearningandcognition.

PSYCHOLOGICAL PRESSURE AMONG ENGINEERING STUDENTS_ NAVIGATING STRESS, EXPECTATIONS, AND MENTAL HEALTH I

This issue is packed with inspiring articles, exclusive interviews, and style tips to keep you ahead of the fashion curve. Enjoy!

Engineering stands as a beacon of prestige and opportunity for many high school graduates in Morocco. Its promise of stability, social recognition, and lucrative career prospects makes it an attractive path despite its notorious rigor. Students often choose this discipline based on family expectations or societal pressure, perceiving it as the ultimate validation of their academiccapabilities.

The journey, however, comes with significant psychological challenges. Engineering students frequently experience chronic stress, anxiety, perfectionism, and eventual burnout. The continuous pressure to excel creates a competitive environment where self-worth becomes dangerously entangled with academic performance. Many students report feelings of inadequacy, exhaustion, and isolation as they struggle to meet both internal and external expectations.

Sami Chakour Sami

The Challenging transition to higher education

These challenges intensify dramatically during the first years in Classes Préparatoires aux Grandes Écoles (CPGE). This period represents a jarring transition marked by a ranking-based grading system that fosters relentless competition. Students face a grueling schedule of constant assignments and frequent high-stakes examinations. The CPGE environment's intensity is reflected in research showing that engineering students experience stress levels comparable to medical students, with approximately 5% requiring clinical intervention. The stark contrast between high school's structured support and CPGE's demanding independence leaves manystudentsfeelingoverwhelmedandunprepared.

Persistent fear fo failure

Thisacademicpressureoftencreatesapersistentfear of failure that follows students throughout their education. The hypercompetitive atmosphere encourages unhealthy social comparisons, where students constantly measure themselves against peers.

According to Festinger's social comparison theory, this perpetual self-evaluation against others can lead tochronicfeelingsofinadequacy.

Many students develop what Seligman identified as learnedhelplessness, believingthatregardlessoftheir efforts, successremainsunattainable.

Finding balance in engineering edication

As we examine the demanding path of engineering education in Morocco, we must ask: How can educational institutions create rigorous academic environments that prepare students for professional challenges while still protecting their psychological well-being?

A What balance between competition and support would foster resilient, innovative engineers without the lasting scars of academic trauma?

Not Just History It’s a Wound Still Bleeding.

Palestine’s story begins over 5,000 years ago with the Canaanites — the first known inhabitants of the land. Across centuries, it became home to many civilizations: Egyptian, Babylonian, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic.Inthe7thcentury,Islam reached the land, and Jerusalem — already sacred to Christians and Jews — became the third holiest city in Islam, hometoAl-AqsaMosque.

From 1516 to 1917, Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire. Then came British colonization after World War I. In 1917, the Balfour Declaration promised a Jewish homeland in Palestine, withouttheconsentofitsnative Arab population. Tensions escalated.

In 1948, the State of Israel was declared. For Palestinians, this became the Nakba ("catastrophe") — over 700,000 Palestinians were expelled, more than 500 villages destroyed, andapeopleturned intorefugeesovernight.

In 1967, during the Six-Day War, Israel occupied the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza — territories still under military occupation today. Settlements have expanded illegally, walls havedividedcities, andmovement isrestricteddaily.

Since2007,Gazahasbeenunder asuffocatingblockade.Repeated wars have devastated it, but nothing compared to what began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack and Israel responded with overwhelming force. Over 35,000 Palestinians have since been killed, most of themwomenandchildren.Gaza’s infrastructurecollapsed:nowater, no electricity, no hospitals. Entire neighborhoods, like Shujaiya and Beit Hanoun, were flattened. Famine spread. In December 2023, the UN warned that 1.1 millionpeoplewerestarving. Al-Aqsa Mosque has seen repeated violations — especially during Ramadan and Jewish holidays — with Israeli police stormingprayerhallsandarresting worshippers.

In 2025, the violence deepened. In May, Israel launched a full ground invasion into central Gaza. Over 400 Palestinians were killed in a single day, and reports emerged of Israel planning to reoccupy Gaza and displace its people. Humanitarian aid was blocked for weeks. Babies died from hunger. Civilians were buried under rubble, often with no one left to dig themout.

Meanwhile, in the West Bank, settler attacks, arrests, and military raids surged. Over 500 Palestinians were killed thereinjustthepastyear.

Dear Gazzah,

I write to you with a trembling soul, knowing you now lie upon your deathbed ; not in peace, but beneath the roar of jets and the thunder of bombs.

I know they broke their promises, as they always did

But you held on , not from trust, but from the absence of choice. You clung to the shards of hope not because hands reached out to you, but because none did.

You bore the impossible, alone, in an era where every heart beats only for itself.

They could have stood by you. If only they gathered as one, faced the tyrants, and cast their faith in Allah Al-Qawiy . But instead, they scrolled past your wounds, distracted by comfort and blinded by silence. You saw bodies fly not with dreams or wings, but with the blast of merciless rockets, tossed tens of meters in the sky.

You cradled infants who never opened their eyes, or whose first sight of this world was fire and rubble.

We celebrated Eid with warmth, scent of sweets, and laughter around our tables . While you whispered goodbye to your mother beneath a collapsing roof. You buried your brother in your Eid clothes.

We are sorry !

I am sorry for the newborns whose lullabies were sire

For the toddlers whose first words were cries for w

For the ten year old boy who became a soldier overn

Shielding his baby sister, knowing that in seconds he

But know this, beloved soul:

Allah does not forget.

He never turns from those whose hearts beat with sabr and tawakkul.

You were chosen for this trial for martyrdom crowned with eternity, for gardens shaded by the Throne, Where laughter will never be silenced again.

You, who fasted with an empty stomach and broke your fast on grief, You, who prayed under skies that rained fire , You are the ummah's unshakable pulse.

Even as the world looked away, Allah gazed upon you withMercy that never ends.

Remember always:

Justice will come ; like a storm from the unseen, And every child's scream will echo in the heavens until it’s answered.

Your blood waters the soil of dignity. Your name is etched in the Book of the Brave. And one day, the world will weep for not standing by you.

But by then, you’ll be in gardens rivers flow beneath Smiling.

HAUNTING EXPLORATION OF SOLITUDE AND REVENGE FROM ENSIAS'S CREATIVE MINDS

The talented Oneshot Cell at ENSIAS has released "Hollows," a thoughtprovoking fictional narrative under the leadership of the visionary ELGARCH Youssef and the brilliant Amal ELKADIRI. As co-leaders of the creative team, they've guided a collaborative effort that examines how isolation and vengeance can transformthehumanspirit.

"Hollows" centers on a mysterious grandmother concealing a sinister secret from her children—something beyond human or puppet—forcing readers to question appearances and intentions. The story masterfully illustrates how profound loneliness, when coupled with revenge, can drive peopletocommitunimaginableacts.

"Our team wanted to explore the psychological darkness that emerges in isolation," notes ELGARCH, who alongside Amal directed the project's creative vision while working with fellow ENSIASstudentstobringtheconcepttolife.

This compelling oneshot demonstrates the diverse talents flourishing at ENSIAS, where technical education meets artistic expression. Through their leadership, ELGARCH and Amal have orchestrated a narrative that proves engineering students can construct not only technological solutions but also intricate psychologicallandscapesthatreflecthumancomplexity.
