DIRECTOR'S NOTES Directing any play is a journey, but directing a world premiere is an exquisite adventure. It’s exciting to create something that will be spoken and sung for the first time. It’s thrilling to work through the rehearsal process to see where the cast takes the characters and how the music ties things together. I have had the luxury of working with Joe McDonough and David Kisor for many years, so working with writers you've have come to know creataes a shorthand in communication. We have history to rely on for inspiration and I treasure the trust between us. The cast of The Dancing Princesses, some of whom are new to the ETC stage and some you've come to know, are all united to bring this story to life to you. The goal for you, our audience, is to tell a story and create a moment in time unlike any other. Directing, for me, means being a questioning audience, someone who challenges points of the story as well as performances. As we open this newly renovated theatre we wanted a world premiere to occupy it for the holidays. New works, works new to the region, and works with a social conscience are all at the heart of our mission, so what better way to celebrate the renewed ETC than to put that message onstage, particularly at this time of year. This season is a special time of year. We both reflect on the present and leap forward to the future. This show is about looking back at what makes us who we are and looking towards what we can become. It’s about unity, understanding, forgiveness and, yes, love. It’s about our world today, united inside the castle and our need to look beyond both physical and emotional barriers. The Dancing Princesses is also a joyous respite from our daily duties. I hope you will enjoy your stay in the world of this play and the world of Ensemble Theatre. Best wishes for a great holiday season and a remarkably wonderful New Year! -D. Lynn Meyers

DANCE AND SPIN by Alexis Jade Colón

A long time ago in a land far, far away (modern-day Germany, to be exact), folk stories and fairy tales were told to pass the time while workers spun flax or sat around the fire. These enchanting stories about princes and princesses, ghosts and goblins, witches and woodland creatures, were passed around from town to town. Each storyteller would “spin” the tale their own way just for fun: adding local landmarks, inside jokes, and even characters based on their audience members! One day, in the early 19th century, two brothers decided to collect these folk stories and fairy tales to preserve the culture of their people. They collected over 200 fantastical stories and published them as Fairy Tales by The Brothers Grimm. One of these fairy tales was "Die Zwölf Tanzenden Prinzessinnen" ("The Twelve Dancing Princesses"). For their version, the Brothers Grimm spun it this way: An old soldier returns from war to find a frustrated king. The king’s disobedient daughters somehow slip away each night, wearing out their dancing shoes. The old soldier disguises himself with a magical cloak received from an enchantress to follow the princesses through forests of silver, gold, and diamonds. At a faraway castle, the king’s disobedient daughters dance with delinquent princes from other places. The old soldier reveals the secret of the dancing princesses, and they are punished, while the king rewards the old soldier by making him the heir to the throne. However, the Brothers Grimm only published their version of the story. All throughout the land, people told their own tales of dancing princesses— the number of princesses often varied, the reasons they were locked up were reshaped, and the gloomy Brothers Grimm ending was often traded for a “happily ever after.” Today, in this old German town of Cincinnati, we spin this fairy tale our own way, too. In our version, we sing and dance toward happily ever after, celebrating acceptance and second chances. 16 •
