Shakespeare Theatre Association of America 2009 Annual Conference Hosted by Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Massachusetts January 28–31, 2009

Welcome to Lenox! We are delighted to finally bring our many colleagues and long time friends together on our campus, in the heart of the wintry but wonderful Berkshires. A bit of history: Shakespeare & Company was founded in Lenox, and has been an actively involved and committed member of our neighboring communities for 32 years. We moved to this thirty-acre property in 2000. The campus was founded as the Lenox School for Boys in the early 1930s, which closed in the early 1970s. The grounds then had assorted owners, all with ambitious ideas but limited wherewithal. Little work was done, maintenance became spotty, and by the time we acquired the buildings, many had fallen into grave disrepair. Upon arrival we converted a basketball court and gymnasium into Founders’ Theatre and Josie’s Place. Over the next several years we managed to salvage most of the buildings, and last year began major rehab and renovation on a 70,000-square-foot field house and hockey rink, turning it into a 30,000-square-foot production center and the Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre. We warmly welcome you to our home. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to help make Revolutionary Shakespeare a defining event. We know that 2009 will be a challenging year for all of us, that there are problems to be met and solved before they become unsolvable, and that the continued vitality of STAA and the future of Shakespeare’s theatre will in some large way be determined by what we do and learn here. Your participation in STAA and at this conference is important to where we go as individuals, as theatre companies and to where we can take Shakespeare’s theatre in the coming years. Now let’s get down to the business at hand and come up with some revolutionary thinking! Sincerely,

Tina Packer Artistic Director Shakespeare & Company

STAA Members, Welcome to the annual STAA conference! The theme of this year’s gathering is “Revolutionary Shakespeare”, an idea that Tina Packer suggested to me last year in Utah. The more I listened to her talk about it, the more I liked it—a conference focused on the ways in which our namesake was, and remains, a revolutionary. How was he revolutionary in his own time? How has his work inspired others in their work—artistic and otherwise—in the centuries since? How are theatres today approaching the plays—and their work in general—in non-traditional ways? These are the kinds of questions we asked as we worked on the conference—and we hope we’ve managed to create panels which address them in interesting and unexpected ways. It must be acknowledged, however, that these are unusual times. Many of our theatres have been ravaged by the effects of the global economic meltdown, and some have even come close to shutting their doors; some of our colleagues can’t join us this year, as budget cuts have caused them to stay home. Given this, we have made some last-minute changes in order to accommodate a discussion of how our field is addressing the new economic realities. I hope that, in the end, we can agree that we need to continue to be revolutionaries in how we confront painful choices in the months and years ahead—and that Shakespeare will continue to guide and inspire us to the levels of imagination and creativity we need to survive in tough times.

Philip C. Sneed President Shakespeare Theatre Association of America

Dear Friends, On behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, I welcome you to the 2009 Shakespeare Theatre Association of America conference hosted by Shakespeare & Company of Lenox. William Shakespeare was the master wordsmith. The issues, characters, personal conflicts and civil concepts he identified relate to who we are, how we live and how we answer the challenges facing us today. Shakespeare’s words are one of our greatest treasures and they will resonate throughout time. As you gather this week for Revolutionary Shakespeare, I hope you get the chance to enjoy the beauty of Western Massachusetts and encourage you to visit and enjoy our many museums, historic sites and fantastic restaurants. Please accept my best wishes for a successful and informative conference. Best regards,

Deval Patrick, Governor of Massachusetts

Hello and welcome! The Berkshires Visitors Bureau is pleased to welcome the Revolutionary Shakespeare conference to the Berkshires, and we hope that you’ll spend some of your free time exploring the cultural treasures and natural beauty we call home. The surrounding area is steeped in artistic and literary history and every exploration is made even more memorable by the natural beauty. You’ll understand why we say the Berkshires are where nature and culture exist in harmony, and we hope that you’ll take the sense of harmony home with you. Thank you for selecting Shakespeare & Company as the site for your revolutionary event. Shakespeare & Company is a vital, dedicated and much-loved member of our business and cultural community, and plays a decisive role in the quality of education in our schools and quality of life in our towns. The art presented on these stages is integral to the character of the Berkshires. We are proud to have Shakespeare & Company as one of several theatre companies who call the Berkshires home, and welcome you as their colleagues. Once again, please enjoy your visit to the Berkshires. Stay warm, be productive, and bring your friends and family back for a visit soon! Warmly, Lauri Klefos President & CEO, Berkshires Visitor Bureau
