T
heatre is a dynamic, mutable art form. Professional attainment requires continual assessment, talent renewal and training. The ultimate test of talent and training is performance. In performance, the actor must go beyond the training and rely on instinct and imagination. In a sense they must forget all they have learned in order to live truthfully under imaginary circumstances. They must breathe life into their characters and their text in such a way as to entertain and move a living, breathing audience.
This summer we are reviving our Lunch Box Shakespeare series with our production of Measure for Measure, performed by the members of the Center for Actor Training’s Performance Intern Program. Internships are a valuable and popular route taken by many young performers looking to take the next step in their careers. Offered at regional theatres throughout the country, internships offer an opportunity for the best and brightest young actors to gain professional theatre experience straight out of drama school. This summer at Shakespeare & Company, ten Performance Interns will get that experience fully—by taking ownership of their own Shakespeare production in a professional theatre season, and all challenges and rewards that entails. Taking training into rehearsal and taking rehearsal into performance brings the purpose of playing back to it’s essence, which is “…to hold, as ‘twere, the mirror up to nature.” If you haven’t yet seen Measure for Measure, come and experience this thought-provoking play—and the joy and vitality of the Performance Internship Program!
