Within the second year of my three years of study, this project was one that required me to take the existing shell of a building and transform not only its interior structure but also the purpose, as a concept store, also relevant to its surroundings.

The main concept behind ‘Scene’ is a Salon and Barber within a nocturnal setting.

The word relates directly to the establishment as it is intended to be not only an environment where people are able to fulfil their needs for maintenance but also a unique experience that also allows the user to immerse in ‘action’ that is night life.

The intent behind making it both a salon and barber was in order to make it gender neutral. Furthermore, In order to achieve this ‘nocturnal’ setting it is dimly Lit only with LEDs. However it is understood that a lack of light may raise security concerns, Therefore the glass instalment within the middle of the store is placed as a means of complete visibility through-out.

Clients served with drinks, Open bar to purchase drinks. A Unique experience for customers where they are able to purchase any hair products and equipment used whilst styling, whilst also having access to the bar on the ground floor.

From initial observation it’s clear that the market square within this contemporary setting is a very busy area with a buzz, within the area itself local salons and barbers range within (4.7-5) miles whilst bars ranged within the same radius to the Waterloo House. Therefore demonstrating how the addition of this concept, despite being a unique instalment, will not be completely alien within its envi-

THE FLOOR PLANS The glass instalment within the middle of the building not only provides visibility through-out but also provides a walkways around for people to be able to view every floor.

The original Waterloo House consists of five floors, three of which would be renovated for the purpose of this project.

The basement which is not shown on plan is also included with the intent for storage.

On each floor there are 10 pillars that go through all of these floors, that have not been removed or reconstructed due to overall construction of the building.

Therefore the renovation of the building and design was thought of based around the existing elements within the building itself.

The interior layout of the ground is done with the purpose of being, upon entry, a lounge and club with a bar enclosed by the glass installation in the middle. The overall layout was intended to encourage circulation and encourage people to venture further into the establishment, upstairs to both salons.

Section of First and Second Floor

This project took an existing industrial area, the Northampton Gas Lights building is situated at the front of the Towcester road roundabout, with a rich in history in being a pivotal moment in the way energy was supplied through-out Northampton within the 19th century.

The plans presented are to renovate it into a local nature reserve a “Shelter” for the local wildlife in Northampton. People who come for the experience will have access to a variety of animals and wildlife, whilst also having access to retail stores within the site also itself.

Guests are also welcome to stay within the hotel on the site.

Sustainability is at the core of the project, the aim of the nature reserve/ park is to not only protect natural heritage but to also help the economic development of the property, as it is a property where customers are required to pay for the facilities. Also with the use of a display room will provide access to environmental awareness and education.

The hotel is completely solar panel powered, the excessive placement of windows enables the hotel to be naturally ventilated, parking though on the site is limited to only people who have disabilities and staff of the park, a bicycle rack provided to encourage guests to use more eco-friendly ways of transport. The train station is also 16 minutes by foot and 10 minutes away by driving with alternative areas for parking on local sites.

Despite the fact that the Northampton Gas Lights building was not listed, therefore it not being necessary to keep components of it, the front detailing was so intricately done that it would be a shame to completely disregard it. Hence why the front of the Gas Light House including its details were kept within the proposed design along with the brick work. The challenge was now to create a design that not only incorporated the original building but had contemporary components too, suitable for a nature reserve and hotel also.

Hotel: Accommodation. Reception. Information Desk. Entrance and Exit to site. Catering/ Cafe.

Site: Viewing Platforms. Parking. Outdoor Catering. Public Toilets. Interactive Area for Woodland Animals. Interactive Area for Riverside Animals. Gift Shop. Information Panels and Maps.

The concrete that makes up the majority of the park is also within the sustainable standards of the park using “Green Concrete” it uses waste material and debris in it’s manufacturing and its production process does not lead to environmental destruction. The porous nature of it also allows for plants to grow as a result.

03 MODEL MAKING

Upon using Vectorworks I was able to model up a consulting desk that would be a significant detail within a perfumery. As this was necessary for workers to consult with clients about the products they had made.

The overall design was changed on the physical model due to the fact that I wanted the worker to be able to switch between two tables if needed for a second client perhaps, or the second table could also be of use to hold documents and products the worker may want separate from clients.

This project was restricted to replicating a kiosk (Made in Hull) where it was a requirement to follow the exact dimensions and structure whilst also replicating it’s functionality, which in this case was the opening doors.

The purpose of creating this model of the nature reserve site was in order to see the heights of the building in scale to one another.

This was also necessary to demonstrate how the site would come together with 3D components. Also to see the viewing platforms sizes in comparison to the building sizes and how certain areas would be closed off with fencing.
