Lyric Light Opera’s Seven Brides for Seven Brothers by Osa Hale In 1954, the film Seven Brides for Seven Brothers entertained audiences with its high-energy musical routines and fun, family-friendly story, scoring an Oscar nomination along the way. This spring, the Lyric Light Opera will be bringing the singing, dancing love story to audiences in western Washington. The story begins with Adam, a confident backwoodsman and Milly, a sassy city girl, who marry after falling in love at first sight. From there, the plot continues to thicken and the cast dances up a frenzy as Milly returns to Adam’s mountain home and meets his six rowdy brothers. What ensues is an action-packed tale of love, kidnapping, brawls and pranks. General Director Brenda Mueller said she waited to put on the production until she knew she had a cast that could do it justice. Between talented performers and strong dance numbers, Mueller said the show will be a rambunctious delight. “Casting was no easy feat. This show requires 18 triple threats (6 brothers, 6 suitors and 6 brides) plus two very strong and capable leads,” Mueller said. “We have hired one of the best choreographers in the Seattle area — Daniel Cruz. He has spent dozens of hours on the high powered dancing.” Cayman Ilika and Matthew Posner, two young and talented performers, are playing Milly and Adam Pontipee, the leading couple. Ilika has been seen in other productions by the Lyric Light Opera, playing roles such as Nellie Forbush in “South Pacific” and Maria Reiner in “The Sound of Music.” She also recently performed in a solo concert put on by Marvin Hamlisch, the writer of the well-known musical “Annie,” Mueller said. Posner, who acted opposite of Ilika in “The Sound of Music,” also has extensive acting experience, including several roles with 5th Avenue Theatre and Village Theatre.

The brothers are played by Ryan Bohannon (Benjamin), Mikey DelaCruz (Caleb), Cassidy Katims (Daniel), Jonathan Hansen (Ephraim), Brad Walker (Frank) and Jack Rogers (Gideon). The brides are Kate Mosbarger (Dorcas), Emma Ruhl (Ruth), Krista Gibbons (Liza), Elizabeth Parr (Martha), Helen Roundhill (Sarah) and Alia Thomaier (Alice).

Matthew Posner plays the part of Adam Pontipee and Cayman Ilika Jacobs portrays Milly Pontipee.

“Both have worked with me before,” Mueller said. “They are top talent and wonderful warm people. They will bring the roles of Milly and Adam Pontipee to life on the stage.” The show has much more to offer than its gifted leads. Sets are being built by the Utah Festival Opera, and the bright costumes paired with the high-spirited music will make the stage come alive before the dancing even begins, Mueller said. “Costumes will be colorful and eyecatching and music will be captivating and toe-tapping with an on-stage banjo, fiddle and accordion just to name a few,” she said, “But the capper will be the magnificent dance numbers.” “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” will be playing at McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon the second, third, and fourth weekends in March (March 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23 and 24), with Friday & Saturday shows at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday shows at 2:00 p.m. The production will be performed at Kirkland Performance Center in Kirkland throughout April (April 6, 7, 12, 19, 20, 27 and 28) with all shows at 7:30 p.m. save for one 2:00 p.m. show on the 7th. Tickets are available through the box office at each venue or through the Lyric Light Opera’s website (www. lyriclightopera.org). Brenda Mueller will be sending out special offers over email. Mueller can be contacted at lyricbrenda@ gmail.com. Tickets range from $19 to $45. Group discounts are available. “Fun for all ages, the show is going to be a musical delight,” Mueller said. “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is the perfect feel-good family show,” Mueller said. “[It’s] a must see show for anyone of any age who is interested in enjoying an energizing feel-good love story musical of the highest quality that will leave you singing and tapping your toes for a long, long time!” Osa Hale is a new contributor to Entertainment News Northwest, and a student enrolled in the Journalism department at Western Washington University. Her work has appeared on Bellingham’s KOMO News website, as well as in the Western Front. Photos by Neil Rodgers.

Christopher Key Hits 250 by Joanna Nesbit Entertainment News Northwest readers may not be aware, but ENNW staffer Christopher Key recently completed his 250th entertainment review for the magazine on February 8. The reviews which, to date, have earned seven Washington State Press Association awards, appear regularly on the ENNW blog at www.ennw.info and offer readers a comprehensive look at what’s playing in the region. Key began providing reviews in September 2008. His original vision was to review theatre productions, for which he has the most experience, but “it seems to have expanded far beyond that vision and I couldn’t be more delighted,” he says. He’s reviewed everything from stage productions to restaurants to rides in WWII planes. Along the way, he’s learned about opera, ballet, music, and many other subjects. The purpose of the reviews is not to critique but to support the performing arts in the area. Key has been criticized by readers for his “relentlessly positive reviews,” but, he says, “regular readers have learned to read between the lines and usually understand when I’m less than pleased with a performance.” That said, he does hold professional groups, such as Vancouver’s Bard on the Beach, to a higher standard and isn’t afraid to say so. Key has been involved in theater for more than 60 years and since moving to Bellingham in 1999, he has performed in many local productions (which he doesn’t review himself). He is the artistic director of Free Key Productions, a semiprofessional theater production company he formed in 2012. The blog is a labor of love and often keeps Key awake until the wee hours to get a review posted before a show opens. Let’s offer a rousing THANK YOU to Key for his loyal support of the arts community. To learn more about Key and his work, visit www.freekeyproductions. com or read his reviews at www.ennw.info. Bellingham freelancer Joanna Nesbit has been writing for ENNW since 2005. She loves learning new stuff about her town. Her work has also appeared in FamilyFun, Parenting, Northwest Travel, and Washington State Visitors’ Guide. Learn more at www.joannanesbit.com.

with a technique that she calls “flushing.” In the beginning of the painting her surface is wet which allows the pigment to be applied with soft wet edges. As the painting comes to fruition the paper surface gets drier and edges get harder. This technique helps the artist to free up the way that he/ she applies the watercolor and loosens up the painting! Family Planning and Other Funny Stories by Joanna Nesbit

Keep your eyes open on March 30 and 31 and you may see actors and filmmakers at work in Bellingham. Local filmmaker Sue Mattson and her camera crew will be shooting the first episode of her TV pilot Family Planning and Other Funny Stories, a comedy series about a middle-aged woman looking for love in the digital age, a sort of Sex in the City meets Modern Family, says Mattson. Mattson is a writer, Lorraine Wilde stars director, and producer, in Family Planning. and says this project’s inspiration came from a conversation. “The original idea for the story stemmed from a conversation I had with my oldest daughter. She told me I should date everyone and stop being so picky. I thought this was a great idea for a story.” Once the pilot is finished, Mattson will shop it around to TV networks and enter it into film festivals. Her immediate goal is to produce a quality comedy show and pay her actors and crew, even though they’ve volunteered their time. But bigger than that, she wants to make a 6-episode series that garners enough attention to put Bellingham on the map as a location for filmmakers. Capturing the attention of outside filmmakers will create opportunities for local filmmakers and actors, she says, as well as bring in potential investors to fund projects. Family Planning features local and regional comedy actors, including Bellinghamsters Lorraine Wilde and Autumn Koplin, and Seattle actors Michael Mitchell (originally from Bellingham), Conrad Wrobel, and Bill McQuaide. Mattson is also looking for extras for the pilot episode. She needs adults and kids (aged 4-8) for an outdoor soccer scene, and adults for an indoor karaoke scene. If interested, contact her at sue. mattson4@gmail.com. Part of making a film is building a fan base to attract financing. To learn more and to see a promotional-length clip, visit http://www.indiegogo.com/ projects/301635?c=home, where you can also make a donation to help fund the project.

The Lincoln Presents Janis Ian in Mount Vernon Jazz Celebration V to be held March 17 The Jazz Celebration concert series began in 2008 when Bob Storms (pictured) registered the copyrights to the last of 500 songs that he had written over his lifetime. He made books of songs in a series called “Tunes From Toneville.” Upon reaching his goal, Bob decided to have a one-man “art show” of his music by hiring the best local jazz musicians to perform his songs in a concert. He picked 20 of his favorite songs and played them to a sold-out house that awarded the composer and musicians a standing ovation at the conclusion of the concert. The music performed covered five genres of jazz beginning with ragtime and included dixieland, swing, be-bop, and progressive jazz. Other styles of music were performed as Bob also wrote jazz waltz, Latin American, boogie woogie, jazz rock and funk compositions. The concerts that followed have all used the same format and always include most, if not all, of those jazz styles in each of the concerts. Previous featured artists included Stormy Sea & the Gales; Bellingham Dixieland All Stars; Bria Skonberg, trumpet & vocals; Paul Sorenson, tenor sax, composer; Northern Lights Jazz Orchestra; The Saltwater Octet and Grooveyard. The theme for the 2009 event was “Generations of Jazz” in which the young jazz artists were in a band that followed a band of local well-known geriatric jazz players. The talented young musicians included Thomas Harris, Bria Skonberg, Geoff Knutson, Lyman Lipke and Brian Cunningham. The oldsters were Bruce & Ann Gillette, Walter Germain, Bob Sanders, Martin Van Buren and Gene Hatch. Other jazz luminaries included in past concerts are Chuck Israels, Jud Sherwood and Mark Kelly. To date, over sixty musicians have taken part in the Jazz Celebration concerts. This year, the concert’s top billing goes to the local big band called the Swing Connection under the direction of trombonist Phil Heft. Other featured performers include Burt Barr on trumpet and his wife Rose Marie Barr on piano from Seattle’s Uptown Lowdown Band. Jazz Celebration V will be held at the First Baptist Church of Bellingham, on Sun., March 17 at 7pm. Admission to the concert is $10.

Lauded in her career of nearly fifty years as a revolutionary performing artist and writer, Janis Ian has had a lasting impact on American cultural attitudes over the decades. With the 2008 release of her autobiography Society’s Child, Ian has shown the world her true self and surely inspired countless others to do the same. The Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon is lucky to host her on Sunday, April 7, as a stop on her 2013 U.S. tour. “We’re really excited to have Janis Ian coming to the Lincoln,” says Sue Ellen Heflin, Executive Director of the Lincoln Theatre. “She’s doing wonderful work and we know she will be a captivating performer.” Coming in and out of the spotlight since her debut as a young teen in the sixties, Janis Ian has been nominated for nine Grammies in total. Born into a family and era where civil liberties were a major concern, Ian has never shied away from controversial topics. The power of her work is that it explores social issues such as spousal abuse and gay rights, exposing a deep respect for individuality and true human prosperity. The same could be said about Ian’s personal life. Throughout her wideranging career, she has come to expose her own strife through her diverse work. Her 1993 album revealed her identity as a lesbian and the struggles she has faced because of the surrounding stigma. Janis Ian first asked her parents for piano lessons before her fifth birthday, soon expanding her repertoire to include guitar, organ, and more — on top of her tremendous voice. She has also done composing work for film scores and created her own record label. And as a writer, she currently works as a columnist and has published science fiction and edited an anthology. Ian’s diverse work and fan-focus is apparent in the way she manages her website with lots of free content. If fans are able to contribute, she often asks that they consider helping out the Pearl Entertainment News Northwest ~ March 2013

Foundation instead. This charity is a tribute to her mother and supports continuing education efforts for adults. Janis Ian’s exciting Mount Vernon show starts at 8pm on April 7, and tickets ($22-$28 with $2 off for members) are now available at www.iLovetheLincoln. com (click “Tickets”) or at the Theatre Box Office (712 S. 1st St., Mount Vernon). Call the Lincoln at 336-8955 for more info. Janis Ian has been known to stay after her shows to meet fans whenever possible. As not only an accomplished musician but also a public personality who cares deeply about civil liberties and individuality, her performance is sure to be an inspiration and a hit. Michelle Wallace has been a contributing writer for Entertainment News NW since 2008, when she arrived in Bellingham. Her work includes outreach writing for Allied Arts of Whatcom County and publicity for local composer/producer Curtis Cartier. She is a graduate of Western Washington University, where she studied literature and astronomy. Photos by Peter Cunningham.

“Here’s to the Ladies” – Sudden Valley Jazz Festival

Above, L-R: The series opener, on March 30, features gypsy jazz band Pearl Django and vocalist Anne Griffith. The June 7 concert features Seattle based blues singer Josephine Howell. New York based singer-pianist Laila Biali performs on September 28. Top right and direct right: Four-time recipient of Seattle’s Earshot magazine’s best jazz vocalist in the Northwest, Greta Matassa is joined by the incredible jazz tap dancer, Jovan Miller on November 9.

by Meghan Thompson What started in 2011 with a single concert featuring the Western Washington Faculty Jazz Quartet, is now a full blown concert series raising funds to benefit the South Whatcom Public Library at Sudden Valley. Last year’s series drew nearly 900 jazz fanatics over the course of four performances, and this year promises to be even bigger. The 2013 series is titled “Here’s to the Ladies,” and highlights some amazing female vocalists yielding from as far away as France, and as near as our own backyard. The series starts on March 30, with vocalist Anne Griffith, crooning along with the irresistible gypsy jazz band known as Pearl Django. Griffith will be performing a number of Edith Piaf songs, as well as other songs made famous by French singers. The second concert, on June 7, features the dynamic Seattle based blues singer, Josephine Howell. September 28 brings New York based, Canadian born, Juno Award nominated, singer-pianist, Laila Biali making her first Northwest U.S. tour. Last, but certainly not least, will be a repeat performance by the amazing Greta Matassa and up and coming young tap dancer, Jovan Miller, on November 9. Both the Greta Matassa and Pearl Django Concerts sold out last year so be sure to act quickly on reserving your seats. Tickets are $70 for all four concerts, and are available at Village Books in Fairhaven. Individual tickets for specific shows can be purchased in Sudden Valley, or via the South Whatcom Library website, and are available now. 2013 marks the 3rd annual “Jazz Builds a Library” series in Sudden Valley. Developed in 2010 as an organization looking to raise funds in hopes of creating a full service library for the South Whatcom county area that includes Geneva, Sudden Valley and Glen Haven, an area with a population of approximately 10,000, ambitious

volunteers have successfully raised $225,000, leaving them only $85,000 away from their goal. The Sudden Valley Community Association has leased to the Friends of the Library 6,500 sq. ft. of an old horse barn, located within the recreation corridor, that is to be renovated and will become the South Whatcom Public Library at Sudden Valley. Work on the barn has already begun, using mostly volunteer labor, and once the space is finished, the Whatcom County Library System will fill it with the furnishings, technology, staff, and books necessary for a full service library. For more information on the concerts, purchasing tickets, or to volunteer and/or make a donation to the “Jazz Builds a Library” organization – please visit the South Whatcom Library website at: www.suddenvalleylibrary.org. Meghan is a Whatcom County native with plans to retire young & one day make it big as a New York Times bestselling author. Her writing can be found online at www.confessionsofawordslut.com.

Bellingham’s Dance Gallery Celebrates 22nd Annual Concert by Meghan Thompson This March, come out and enjoy The Dance Gallery’s annual spring concert, featuring dance and multimedia works by local and national choreographers. With five shows on March 8, 9, 15, and 16 at 7:30pm, as well as March 17 at 5:00pm, the event includes a silent auction with proceeds benefiting the non-profit arts group. The March 17 show will also include a free reception, open to the public, after the show. The concert will be held at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center, located at 1314 Harris Ave in Fairhaven. Bellingham’s Dance Gallery is a non-profit repertory dance company that was founded in 1991 to provide opportunities to teach, learn, choreograph, perform and enjoy dance in Whatcom County. As a member of Allied Arts, Dance Gallery regularly collaborates with guest musicians and choreographers representing diverse ethno-cultural genres. With a mission to bring dance to a wider audience, the company is proud to have brought their modern dance shows to many smaller local communities including Deming, Van Zandt, and Friday Harbor. Founded in 1991, Dance Gallery was honored with the Mayor’s Arts Award in 1999, and has received grants from the Washington State Arts Commission, the Horizons Foundation, the BossackHeilbron Charitable Foundation, and a residency from Centrum. Dance Gallery and its amazing performers have been invited to perform at events such as Bumbershoot, First Night Tacoma, 12

Minutes max, Seattle Fringe Festival, and the Allegro series, as well as locales throughout Washington state and Canada. The works being performed this year are an eclectic mix of dances created by guest choreographers, previously choreographed pieces adapted for the Gallery specifically, as well as some they’ve choreographed themselves. One of the Dance Gallery’s main goals is to find choreography that suits the wide range of talents and styles for their unique members. “Do Fries Come With That Shake,” choreographed by Nancy Cranbourne of Boulder, Colorado, features an ensemble moving to a medley of Beatles songs, with custom costumes by dancer Lynn Schmidt, specially designed to reflect the music’s vivid pop vibe and shifting moods. “Pard’ner” is a duet by Dance Gallery cofounder and longtime local choreographer Dan Dalley, set to “Amazing Grace,” and moves Alona Christman performs in “House,” a multimedia piece by former Bellingham choreographer Kristin Torok.

The Circus Comes to Town! “Deadman Wonderland” Circus Premiers March 1st

Superhero Boy Band presents “Seeds of Change”

“Deadman Wonderland,” the most ambitious project to come out of the Bellingham circus scene in years, debuts Friday, March 1 at 7:30pm at the Bellingham Circus Guild. An all-star cast of six local circus performers, founders and members of the Bellingham Circus Guild and the Lookout Arts Quarry, has come together to produce a delightful show. “Deadman Wonderland” is a wonder of theatrics and magic mixed with the fun of circus. Drawing inspiration from Japanese folklore bakemono, this show presents the story of a young man

When you can’t rely on the “1%” to solve the world’s problems, to whom do you turn? The 0.0000001% – the Superhero Boy Band. Superhero Boy Band is a full-throttle inter-disciplinary performance troupe that has emerged through collaboration between Vancouver’s critically acclaimed Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret and Bellingham’s Dream Science Circus. “Superhero Boy Band: Seeds of Change” is a 90-minute musical physical comedy that weaves together original music, boy band dancing, puppetry, video, special effects, and stop-motion animation to tell a single narrative. The story takes place in the near future when a large corporation, Momsanto, aggressively tries to monopolize human reproduction. Their GMO sperm produce infertile offspring who have “immaculate complexion, disease resistance, perfect vision, and proportional perfection.” The show follows our heroes, time-shifting X-Acto (Aaron Malkin), orgasmic Magnum (Islando Bocock), and telekinetic Slip ’n Slide (Alastair Knowles), from their immaculate conception as test tube babies to becoming spokespersons for Momsanto as the immensely popular Boy Band. When a time-travel journey reveals

trapped in the world of demons. Using the beautiful spoken language of Japan and a thrilling soundtrack, the show brings the circus to light. “Japanese traditions are an inspiration for our show,” says Kai Ito, cast member and producer of the show. “We have been very careful to be culturally sensitive, rather than trying to imitate these arts exactly. We’ve incorporated and explored a few aspects and mixed them with our own creativity.” This wildly visual show takes the audience from darkness to light, humor to tragedy. Everyone will delight in this production of dazzling circus arts, juggling, acrobatics, puppetry, dance, magic and more. It’s a must see show, appropriate for all ages. “Deadman Wonderland” will run March 1-3 and 7-10 at the Bellingham Circus Guild, 1401 6th Street, Suite 101 in Bellingham (just up the street from the train station in Fairhaven). On Thursday, March 14, the show will be hosted by the historic Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon, 712 S. First Street. Shows will start at 7:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 6:30pm on Sundays. Doors open 30 minutes prior to the show. Tickets are $12 general, $10 students or seniors, $5 for kids and are available in advance at the Bellingham Food Co-op or online at www.deadmanwonderlandcircus.com.
