Happy New Year from the staff at Entertainment News NW

Play It Forward!

Music Education Gets New Name by Christopher Key It all started at a joint meeting between the boards of Bellingham Festival of Music and Whatcom Symphony Orchestra. Both organizations are dedicated to offsetting the lack of music education in the schools caused by continued funding cuts. The result was “The Calidore Project,” named for a string quartet from the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles. “This is a premier conservatory where every student is fully endowed,” said Karen Berry of the Festival board. “It is a school of 120 students and extremely difficult to get into therefore drawing some of the best young musicians worldwide. Our first residency was with the Calidore String Quartet, which included Jeremy Berry, born and raised in Bellingham and a product of our public schools and local music teachers. This project was so well received by our schools, students and music community that we felt it needed to continue.” Since there are already programs in place for elementary school students (Beethoven in the Schools, Musicians in the Schools), the two boards felt it was time to connect with middle and high school students. “These students are just on the cusp of deciding what they are going to do with their music education,” Berry said. “We felt if we could reach out to them with young, relevant, soon to be professionals well on their way to a

career in music, we might be able to inspire, educate and even influence them in decisions they make down the road.” Since there is a different group coming to teach and perform this year, they decided to rename the project with something that would characterize the continuing effort. Thus: Play it Forward Chamber Music Residency. Smoke and mirrors is often a derogatory term applied to politicians and others trying to avoid responsibility for their actions. It’s also the name of a fivemember group from Colburn that will be arriving in February. From their website: “Smoke and Mirrors Ensemble believes that sharing live music is an essential part of a healthy community. As supporters of music education, we have developed outreach programs, which we have performed in schools throughout Los Angeles. While we always strive to take our art forward, we never want to forget the sheer joy of banging on pots and pans like we did as children. Our outreach programs encourage students to experience the world of sound that surrounds us all, a world that SME hopes to share with the whole world.” All of this does, of course, take money and the organizations accomplish that through dedicated “Music in the Schools” fundraisers. Donations are also sought from the public, which is invited to attend a public performance at the Western Washington University Performing Arts Center on Thursday, February 7, at 7:30

WHATCOM! READS! by Christine Perkins This year’s Whatcom READS! selection has something for everyone – history, romance, a courtroom drama, a murder mystery – even a local setting. It’s Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson, and there’s still time to read it (or re-read it) before the author visits Whatcom County in February. What page are you on? Set on an island in Puget Sound in the 1950s, Snow Falling on Cedars begins in a courtroom. Kabuo Miyamoto, a JapaneseAmerican fisherman, stands trial for the murder of Carl Heine, Jr. A newspaper reporter looks on while reminiscing about his childhood relationship with the accused man’s wife. Prosecutors present the possible motive: anger over the sale of land promised to Kabuo’s father but lost while the Miyamoto family was interned at Manzanar during World War II. Whatcom READS!, now in its 5th year, is presented by every public and academic library in Whatcom County and Village Books, with financial support from the Friends of the Bellingham Public Library and the Whatcom County Library Foundation.

The goal of Whatcom READS! is to encourage everyone in Whatcom County to read and discuss the same book. Organizers have planned numerous book discussions and supplemental events to further explore topics raised in Snow Falling on Cedars. Of note this year is a panel discussion on “The JapaneseAmerican Experience During World War II” to be held at the Bellingham Public Library on Saturday, January 12. Invited speakers include people whose families were interned, a woman whose father volunteered for the 442nd infantry, a regiment consisting almost entirely of Japanese-American soldiers, and a woman whose father was a camp supervisor. For a more academic perspective, Professor Robert Keller will present “Reconciling the Past: The History, Literature and Ethics of Japanese Removal” on Tuesday, January 22 at the Fairhaven Branch Library and again on Saturday, February 9 at the Blaine Library. Professor Keller will illuminate the debate

over forced Japanese removal and its impact on how we view civil rights amidst security crises today. He asks, “How has the memory of internment affected treatment of Arab-Americans following 9/11?” Readers who also like films will enjoy a special screening of Snow Falling on Cedars at the Pickford Film Center at 7:30 p.m. on February 13. “This novel is ripe for discussion, and that is exactly what Whatcom READS! is all about,” said Suzanne Carlson-Prandini, a Bellingham Public Library staff member who will be leading an interactive book club with the author on February 19. Readers will have the chance to explore themes of racism, loyalty, and ethics with David Guterson at the Bellingham Public Library from 2-4 p.m. that day. That evening, Guterson will give an author talk at the Jansen Art Center in Lynden. On Wednesday, February 20, Guterson will speak at Whatcom Community College at 7:30 p.m. He will also present “The Art and Craft of Writing” at Western Washington University on Thursday, February 21. All events are free of charge and open to the public. For details and a complete calendar of events, visit www.whatcomreads.org. Copies of Snow Falling on Cedars may be borrowed from any library in Bellingham or Whatcom County. You can also reserve a book club kit so your book group can read the novel together before attending one of the author presentations. Alternately, you can purchase the book at local bookstores including Village Books. Join the discussion! Christine Perkins is the Assistant Director of the Bellingham Public Library. She has been reviewing fiction for Library Journal since 1998 and is a member of two Bellingham book clubs.

All That Jazz Krieger Riffs on History by Christopher Key Jazz, that most American of musical inventions, has been around for just a century in this City of Subdued Excitement. According to historian Milton Krieger, that century has been anything but subdued, musically speaking. The Less Subdued Excitement is a labor of love six years in the making and painstakingly documents “a century of jazz in Bellingham and Whatcom County, Washington.” Krieger, like most of the musicians devoted to this musical art form, isn’t going to get rich from his book. The rest of us, however, are richer for having this history at our fingertips. The author is smart enough not to get bogged down in arguments of what is and isn’t jazz. Instead, he touches on the roots of jazz from the band music of John Philip Sousa and Scott Joplin’s piano rags through trad, swing, bebop, cool, fusion and other permutations. Whatever subgenre labels have been applied over the years, the music called jazz has worked its way into the soul of this city and county and helps define who we are. Krieger is a professional historian who taught for many years at Western Washington University. This academic experience and training as a researcher infuse his book. He documents the people and places that have injected jazz into the Northwestern bloodstream with an eye for detail and an ear for the language of jazz.

The Doors: Live at the Bowl ’68 – The Lincoln Theatre presents The Doors: Live at the Bowl ’68 on Fri., Jan. 18 and Sat., Jan. 26, both at 7:30pm. Widely held as the band’s best performance ever captured on film, fans can watch the complete version in digitally re-mastered glory as the entire concert has been carefully restored from the original camera negatives to include the lost performances of “Hello I Love You,” “Texas Radio and the Big Beat” and “Spanish Caravan.” The film also includes interviews with the band about what it meant to perform at the Hollywood Bowl. More info and tickets: www.ILovetheLincoln.com or 336-8955. Nordic Movie Night – Bellingham Sons of Norway presents Hawaii, Oslo Fri., Jan. 25, 7pm, at Norway Hall, 1419 N. Forest St., Bellingham. The 2004 Norwegian submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Hawaii, Oslo is a captivating movie by Director Erik Poppe (Troubled Water). Here on one hot Oslo day, seven disparate souls are about to have fates collide (Norwegian with English subtitles, NR). Admission is

Did the legendary Jelly Roll Morton help midwife jazz in Whatcom County? Since he was based first in Seattle, then Milton Krieger. in Vancouver, it seems fairly likely he may have stopped in Bellingham at some point. If he did, the venue was probably a brothel and Krieger gives due credit to Curtis H. Smith’s The Brothels of Bellingham as source material. Perhaps more than on the music itself, Krieger builds his history around the people who played it. From pioneers like Einar Moen, Mel McKee and Art Hoeruegel to today’s luminaries like Julian MacDonough, Courtney Fortune and Tom Anastasio, Krieger documents the players. He also takes us on a tour of the places where jazz has found a home, from ballrooms and Grange Halls to speakeasies and fern bars. Imagine my delight to learn about Key’s Dancing Pavilion in Birch Bay. Educational institutions have played a lead role in making this area something of a hotbed for jazz. Krieger points to the jazz programs at Western and the leadership of Phil Ager, Walter Zuber Armstrong and Chuck Israels. Their influence trickled down

into the high and middle schools, where jazz still hangs on despite budget cuts to arts education. Several organizations that helped bring jazz to the forefront are well documented, like Musicians Union Local 451, the Pacific Northwest Jazz Alliance and Jud Sherwood’s contemporary The Jazz Project. Krieger’s writing style, like the music he documents, is somewhat improvisatory and occasionally convoluted. It’s not always easy reading, but the effort is more than worthwhile. Whether you’re a player or a listener, The Less Subdued Excitement will enrich both your knowledge of the art form known as jazz and your appreciation for the dedicated people who keep it thriving in the face of myriad challenges. Trish Harding’s exquisite painting, “The Power of Sax,” graces the cover and it’s available, of course, at Village Books. Christopher Key is an actor and director who lives in Bellingham and writes to help support his theatrical addiction.

Impressionism with Pastels – The Impressionists of France and California both strove to capture spontaneity, sunlight, color and movement in their work – a departure from staid, smooth academic paintings. They preferred patches of color blended by the eye to re-create how we actually see the natural sparkle of light. In that spirit, Janet Hamilton, instructor and artist, creates sensitive pastel landscapes that capture color, light, and atmosphere in this 2-day workshop on Sat. & Sun., Jan. 26-27, 9am-4pm, at the Whatcom Museum Lightcatcher, 250 Flora St. This enjoyable class will find you exploring your ideas through pastel. Used by many Impressionists, pastel is excellent for juxtaposing and layering colors to achieve a lively effect. Students work from their own photo material and receive personalized attention throughout the class. All levels of experience are welcome. Cost is $145 / $135 Museum members. Register by Jan. 22 through Bellingham Parks and Recreation Office at 3424 Meridian Street or by phone at 778-7000. More info: www.whatcommuseum.org.

Clan Heather Dancers start 2013 with

Jump, Jive, & Wail with Whatcom Swing by Meghan Thompson With the cold months and New Year upon us, it’s the perfect time to pick up a new indoor hobby. What better idea than to join 30 some locals for a weekly dance lesson followed by a free style dance party. Every Monday night, at the Ten Mile Grange, situated conveniently between Lynden, Bellingham, Ferndale and Everson, for $5 you’ll receive lessons in the Cha Cha, Line Dancing, East & West Coast Swing, The Samba, The Waltz, Two Step and more! What started as four friends, in search of a dance floor of their own, has quickly morphed into Whatcom County’s own dance central. All ages are welcome, as are all levels of expertise (or inexpertise). Even this rhythm-less soul was invited to join! And, don’t let the lack of a partner dissuade you from attending; there are plenty of singles in attendance. The weekly lessons are paced to include the basic foundations of each dance as well as a new move or two. The fun begins every Monday night at 7pm with new lessons each month, taught by local enthusiasts. Then from 8-10pm it’s time to show off your newfound dance moves and let loose. If you’d like more information about Whatcom Swing, you can visit their facebook page, or simply swipe the QR Code here with your smart phone for a full schedule of lessons being planned for the New Year. Meghan Thompson enjoys exploring the NW, soaking up the liquid sunshine, people watching, and blogging about her adventures. Beach Store Cafe – Take a Ferry to Dinner by Joanna Nesbit It’s easy to overlook the Beach Store Cafe on Lummi Island because, well, it’s out of the way. But the restaurant is only a 20-minute drive from Bellingham and accessible year round, offering its own little adventure with a 10-minute ferry ride and a 3-minute walk to the café when you park and walk from Gooseberry Point. Plus the restaurant has all-new menus—lunch, dinner, and weekend breakfasts—as well as the best waterfront view of Mount Baker in the county. You’re on island time now. Slow down and enjoy it.

Lummi ferry.

Last June, the Beach Store Cafe reopened under new management by West Shore Hospitality LLC, which also manages the Willows Inn. The café received a facelift with refinished floors, new tables and chairs, and a glass bakery case (now filled with house-made pastries). Under its new kitchen team, the menu has condensed to highlight Northwest seasonal and local cuisine, similar to the Willows Inn’s philosophy, but the café menu is cozy, casual, and accessibly priced. When I visited with friends, we chose salmon tacos, the house veggie burger, and a beef burger with bacon-onion marmalade, topping off with warm pear cobbler and fresh cream. The gourmet pizzas, baked in the onsite wood-fired pizza oven, were tempting. Next time.

“We have been working to build relationships with Whatcom County farmers and dairies so we can source ingredients as locally as possible as much as possible,” says manager Tess Winds-Johnson. The café also has developed a working relationship with the Willows Inn kitchen to collaborate on sources and menu content, which has benefitted both businesses, Winds-Johnson says. The Beach Store Cafe’s lead chefs are Jesse Otero and Jake Spooner, and while WindsJohnson’s title is manager, she has been taking on some baking duties alongside head baker Otero, who also makes the pasta. The three run the café as a team, along with collaboration from Anne Treat, formerly of Old Town Café and now a member of the Willows Inn management team. Winds-Johnson grew up on the island and returned in June 2012 to take a position as a manager, alongside Treat, after nine years away. As a local, she brings an awareness and knowledge of island culture and feels a strong connection to the community. Finding ways to cater to the differing needs of the community and offisland visitors is important to her, so she is excited to structure events for both. Recently, the café hosted a music night with island singer/songwriter David McAdams (a.k.a “Curly” to islanders), and Winds-Johnson says the evening was a hit. She plans to do more of the same, featuring island musicians as much as possible. Here’s a quick list of what’s coming: • Jan. 9 – Brewers’ Night with Kulshan and Chuckanut Breweries; dinner 6-8pm, music 8-11pm. Dinner is a ticketed event featuring a tasting menu paired with select beers from each brewery. The music is open to all. Reserve a dinner spot (40 available) by calling 758-2233. • Third Friday of every month, 711pm – music with islanders David McAdams and Gary MacDonald (www.davidmcadams.com).

• Weekend music – likely a musical event between Fridays and Sundays; check www.beachstorecafe.com and the accompanying Facebook page for updates and events as the restaurant’s plans unfold. The Beach Store Cafe also offers catering services (on-island only) for events such as rehearsal dinners, corporate retreats, receptions, or community events, and has a form available on its website. And coming soon are bike rentals for visitors, a convenient addition for day trippers. Stay tuned for updates on hours. In the spring, the café will return to opening seven days a week. Winter hours are Thurs., 11am-8pm; Fri., 11am-9pm; Sat., 8am-9pm; Sun., 8am-8pm. For more information about events and menus, please visit the website. Note: Ferry passenger fare is $7 roundtrip, paid on the ferry, and car/driver fare is $13 (cash or check only). Bellingham freelancer Joanna Nesbit has been writing for ENNW since 2005. Start 2013 the Right Way: With Jazz! by Michelle Wallace The Jazz Project has announced its 15th concert season, featuring the type of high caliber lineups and venues that audiences have come to love and expect. With three regular series running throughout the year and the lovely Bellwether Jazz Festival in the summer, the Jazz Project will bring local, national and international artists into our city gates this year - all of whom appreciate, share and make exceptional jazz. Formed in 1997 by local drummer Jud Sherwood, the Jazz Project has become a prominent influence in Bellingham’s jazz scene. “What I get most from my members,” Jud explained, “is a sense that they feel privileged to be able to see this quality of music.” Members have even told him that his programming is comparable to – and sometimes even surpassing in – the quality of jazz they’ve seen in New York and Europe.

• Art of Jazz Series: With exceptional artists from Vancouver BC to Portland OR (see many listed above), the Art of Jazz Series begins early this year. Come to the Amadeus Project (1209 Cornwall Ave. downtown Bellingham) from 4:00-6:30pm for monthly concerts from January through May and September through November. Jazz Project members get in free; go to JazzProject.org for info. Most concerts are on the last Sunday of the month, but the first one is early this year on January 13! • 3rd Annual Bellwether Jazz Festival: Coming this September to the Tom Glenn

And the ears of Whatcom County residents are sure in for a treat this year, with performing artists who include Seattle’s Gail Pettis (a 2010 Northwest Vocalist of the Year), Brazilian artist and Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto, saxophonist Cory Weeds from Vancouver BC’s “People Playing Music,” two-time winner of Northwest Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year title Jeff Johnson (bass), internationally touring pianist Wayne Horvitz, and Bellingham favorites Josh Cook, Chuck Kistler and Julian MacDonough with their new CD. Furthermore, the esteemed Jennifer Scott Trio will be hosting the Boundary Bay Jazz Jam series this year. Which brings me to this year’s actual events... • Boundary Bay Jazz Jam: Every first Tuesday of the month from 8:3011:30pm, Boundary Bay Brewery (1107 Railroad Ave. downtown Bellingham) presents a no-cover concert with local jazz musicians and the Jennifer Scott Trio.

Common at Bellwether on the Bay, free outdoor concerts make this late summer event a hit. Stay tuned for special features and ticketing info on JazzProject.org. • Bellingham Youth Jazz Band: Under the direction of Mark Kelly (honored in August’s Whatcom Magazine as one of five influential Whatcom County artists), the youth band performs for free throughout the county, 35 times a year. For locations and dates, visit JazzProject.org. Local artists are a staple of the Jazz Project’s programming, and Jud aims to keep local musicians playing even in a tough market. About the Art of Jazz, Jud explained that the performers “happen to live close enough that I can bring them up [here], but [they’re] also good enough that they can tour anywhere in the world.”

email editor@ennw.info • See www.ennw.info for “News, Reviews and Updates”

Most importantly the Jazz Project aims to keep jazz affordable and accessible to musicians and appreciators alike. In his signature – and obviously quite sincere – pitch line, Jud thanks members and patrons

for “supporting live music and living musicians.” So let’s keep local jazz alive – in 2013 and beyond. Attend a concert, or even consider purchasing a membership to the Jazz Project (starting at $100) for discounts and free admittance to the Art of Jazz. And what better way is there to start your new year? Information on the Jazz Project, including its events, projects and sponsors, is available at JazzProject.org or by calling Jud Sherwood directly at 650-1066. A 501(c)3 non-profit with Jud as director and a variety of sponsors and grants supporting his work, the Jazz Project lies at the perfect intersection of local flavor and international quality. Michelle Wallace has been an Entertainment News NW contributor since she moved to Bellingham in 2008. She has a literature degree and astronomy minor from Western Washington University, where she currently works, and also loves hiking and exploring in this part of the Pacific Northwest.

working together in 1998 and have been laying down the groove ever since. Carswell has played with Blues and R&B legends B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Tower of Power, and Ray Charles. Dailey & Vincent at MBT – On Sat., Jan. 19, at 8pm the Mount Baker Theatre will present two-time Bluegrass Entertainers of the Year Dailey & Vincent on the Main Stage. “The most celebrated new bluegrass act of the last few years,” says The New York Times. The International Bluegrass Music Association agrees, having presented Dailey & Vincent with 13 awards in recent years, including Album of the Year and, for two years in a row, Entertainer of the Year. The band’s 2009 album, “Brothers from Different Mothers,” debuted at #1 on Billboard’s bluegrass chart and even cracked the top 50 on Billboard’s country chart. In 2011, “Singing From the Heart” earned a Grammy nomination, while the single from that album, “Elizabeth,” won a Dove Award. Headed by Jamie Dailey (formerly of Doyle Lawson’s Quicksilver) and Darrin Vincent (formerly of Ricky Skaggs’ Kentucky Thunder), and featuring fiddler B.J. Cherryholmes, the band’s true strength lies in the uncanny harmony of their vocal trios and quartets.
