PRESIDENTIAL GREETINGS Dear Greyhound Nation, Fall 2019 was a busy time, and Eastern New Mexico University got off to a strong start across campus and in our athletic programs.

• The campus celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month and Native American history, traditional highlights of the fall.

• ENMU Choirs and the Symphonic Band gave superb standing-room-only performances in October, • Classrooms are buzzing with students’ projects, faculty research and collaborations.

• Our new Educators Rising was named “chapter of the month” by the Educators Rising organization.

As of Nov. 1, as I write this letter, our football team is 5-3 after putting up a good fight in a tough Wagon Wheel game. Our men’s soccer team got off to a fast start and at one point was ranked No. 9 in the country. They are 9-4-1, a tremendous improvement under second-year coach Jon Fridal. Our baseball team, under new coach Riley Price, is set to make great strides in the Lone Star Conference in 2020. The women’s cross-country team under head coach Jeff Kavalunas is also looking strong and finished third at the conference championships.

This year’s freshman class remained steady at 558 (the same as fall 2018), but more students are coming to Eastern from out-of-state this year. Our student body is still mostly New Mexicans, followed by Texans, naturally, in the lead for out-ofstate students. We also attract a good number of students from Arizona, California, Colorado, and even Wyoming! After recent years of enrollment growth, we have another large senior class this year, promising a record number of students graduating in December.

During Eastern’s 85th Anniversary year, we are celebrating this milestone with a campaign to raise $85,000 for student scholarships. We are off to a good start with $30,740 raised as of Nov. 1. Gifts range from $8.50 (no gift is too small) to $8,500!

I would encourage all Greyhounds to donate whatever they can ($8.50, $85.00, $850.00, or even $8,500) to this campaign to support the 85th Anniversary and our deserving students.

As the beautiful Ginkgo tree in front of Administration Building turns brilliant autumn gold, the cooler days arrive and the campus’s annual Native American Thanksgiving banquet approaches, I am grateful for all ENMU offers our students, employees and the community. I am grateful for you, our alumni, and friends who support the University in so many ways. Many, many thanks.

Weaving Tradition With Wool and Time

Seventh Generation Master Weaver Irvin Trujillo creates designs uniquely his own Story by Noelle Bartl

T

he winding roads in northern New Mexico to picturesque Chimayó will take travelers on a reflective journey that intertwines the past and the present in the

weavings made by Master Weaver Irvin Trujillo (AS 74) and his wife Master Weaver Lisa Trujillo.

As a seventh-generation Rio Grande weaver living in Chimayó, Irvin’s work has evolved from the traditional styles of his forefathers. He incorporates design ideas from historic Rio Grande weavings of Northern New Mexico while adding his own aesthetics that reflect his own experiences and today’s times.

“What I want to do is design themes that are important to my life,” Irvin said. “One piece I wove documented Chimayó’s only bank robbery.”

Raised in Los Alamos, New Mexico, Irvin spent weekends in Chimayó, working in the family apple orchard and on the farm where they grew chile and corn. Young Irvin enjoyed playing drums and was first taught the family weaving legacy at the age of 10.

“My father showed me how to carry a design. He didn’t draw pictures or sketch his weavings,” Irvin said. “He didn’t even take pictures of his weavings. I only had verbal instructions from my father.”

Irvin always felt as if he grew up outside his culture. At the same time, he struggled to imagine himself succeeding like all the Los Alamos National Laboratory researchers.

“In Chimayó, everyone spoke Spanish so I clearly wasn’t one of them, but in Los Alamos my Spanish

surname seemed foreign, so I wasn’t one of them either. I was stuck somewhere in the middle,” Irvin said.

ENMU offered Irvin a music scholarship, but he turned it down to study machine design and civil technology. “I was drawn to the smaller friendly campus,” remembers Irvin. “My ENMU professors, like Robert Pendergraft and Merle Quisenberry, engaged with all of us students. In fact, I recall Mr. Pendergraft sending us out in the countryside in the middle of the night to learn how to survey using only the stars. It was fun and fascinating.”

Returning to Los Alamos for employment at Los Alamos National Laboratory found Irvin at a drafting table all day long in a high-security windowless vault. He yearned for more, but didn’t know exactly what was calling him.

The ENMU alumnus went on to earn a civil engineering bachelor’s degree at the University of New Mexico, where he also met his wife, Lisa. He started working for the Corps of Engineers before the need to weave became too great to resist. The idea of his working in a cubicle for 30 years was not in his plans for the future.

“I hated it. I longed for the brilliant, ambient light; the openness and fresh air of Chimayó where I would return to weave for extra cash over the semester breaks,” Irvin stated.

The degrees Irvin earned from ENMU and UNM were vital to his success as a master weaver and business owner. Dying yarns involves chemistry. Descriptive geometry and drafting are used to build his many looms – especially his 12-foot-wide loom. Math is necessary to calculate materials needed for each weave, the time to make the item, and the costs involved in running a flourishing business. “My process is very much about all kinds of variations of logic and math, color and energy,” explained Irvin.

In fact, it was his father Jacobo Ortega Trujillo who helped Irvin and Lisa with developing their business plan. It seemed only fitting to establish the business on the family farm in Chimayó and name it Centinela Traditional Arts in honor of the generations of Centinela Weavers of Chimayó.

When Irvin and Lisa began researching traditional Hispanic designs and techniques, they learned that Irvin’s father was actually well-known for his weavings. Irvin began spinning and dying yarns from his father’s notes.

Irvin dyes his yarns using natural ingredients; cochineal for reds, cota for orange/yellows, chamiso and peach leaves for yellows and yellow/greens, black walnut for tans, madder root/black walnut for orange/brown, indigo for blues, indigo over chamiso for dark greens and blue/ greens, to name a few. As I developed my unique weaving voice, the vocabulary for my distinctive designs evolved,” acknowledged Irvin. “Weavers start with a ‘cartoon’ as the pattern to execute a specific image. Not knowing the final outcome makes each weaving a journey.”

“Weaving in Northern New Mexico existed for generations and is just as important as other traditions.” Irvin is doing all he can to preserve the tradition and pass along his knowledge to the next generation. His daughter Emily is an eighth generation weaver based out of Albuquerque. Irvin is documenting his designs, techniques and the dying methods in numerous binders stored in the family safe. He teaches apprentices in his studio.

Irvin earned the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellow Award in 2007, the highest accolade honoring folk artists. In 2015, he received the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. Although his list of awards over the past 35 years is numerous, his tapestries speak for themselves.

Many of his tapestries have been included in permanent collections and exhibits in museums around the world including the Smithsonian American Art Museum (“The Hook and the Spider” tapestry) and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.

“Weaving is a wonderful art form,” Irvin said. “It is a means of expressing ideas in the same way that painting, sculpture or photography can. It’s important for me to keep learning and expressing what I’ve learned.”

This year’s festivities were a major success, with alumni coming back to ENMU from across the state and country. Here’s a look at a few who returned.

“A lot of my work is gathering information from departments in order to share it with the public, whether through graphics, videos or general posts,” Thalia said. “I create content for the city social media channels – Instagram and Twitter mostly – purchase ads, and develop marketing plans and content for events and different department programs.”

Othick Scholarship for Educators honoring Terry Othick (MBA 70, BBA 68) for his years of dedicated volunteer service. Briana Beaudoin Plans to Help Children as an Adoption Center Agent

International Student Finds Success at ENMU

Briana Beaudoin wants to be a positive force for children. “I had a hard childhood, and one thing that my life taught me was that we need more caring, competent social workers in the world,” she said.

“I chose my field of study because I am interested in the processes in and on the Earth,” says Ivar Moinat, an international student at ENMU pursuing a bachelor’s degree in environmental science.

“I hope to enhance the lives of the clients I encounter; and I love children, so I believe that I can be a positive force for children in need.”

“Right now, I want to go into urban planning, which is a little different than my field of study,” stated Ivar, who plans to graduate in May 2020. “I want to be involved in big projects, like building new neighborhoods and more specific projects. I don’t really want to work on the technical side, but the planning side.”

The ENMU social work major has short-term plans to be a child welfare social worker, but hopes that she can pair children with good families as an agent for an adoption center one day.

“I want to make a difference in the lives of my clients throughout my career,” Briana explained. “I want to be the kind of social worker that someone remembers as the person who changed their lives in a positive way.”

Briana chose to attend ENMU because of financial aid access and the proximity to her hometown, Roswell, New Mexico. “I am from a very low-income family, and it has been very hard for me to navigate college life because of that, but the resources I’ve had at Eastern have made it all possible,” she shared.

“I loved the community and support that I felt on the ENMU campus and felt that the staff and faculty here would guide me through my college journey in the way I needed as a first-generation college student.”

Born in Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands, to parents Hans Moinat and Carolien Edwards, Ivar came to ENMU as a freshman. His parents and his brother, Maxim Moinat, now live in a smaller town named Hoofddorp. Ivar credits his father, who competed in the 400m hurdles, for his running ability.

Ivar, who was named Greatest Greyhound (Men) and recieved the Greyhound Club Track and Field/Cross Country Scholarship this year, has been on the Dean’s List for six semesters. He took a leap of faith when choosing to attend ENMU. “I was attracted to the Environmental Science Program, and I had a good opportunity to be on the track team. It was hard to choose a school from far away because I was not able to visit, but it has been a great choice,” he said.

2019 HOMECOMING AWARDS

The ENMU Foundation and ENMU Alumni Association officially inducted these honorees at the 44th annual ENMU Foundation Homecoming Breakfast in September

Business of the Year Wienerschnitzel James Hailey, Jr. (attended) is a Clovis native, attending New Mexico State University before transferring to ENMU. While in Las Cruces, he managed his parents’ business, Der Wienerschnitzel.

Before long, Jim returned to Clovis in 1976 to take over the Clovis restaurant. He is known for his generosity to the Portales and Clovis communtities and schools. Jim and the Wienerschnitzel team have provided thousands of hot dogs for concession stands at ENMU, Clovis, Portales and Texico schools to help with fundraisers during the basketball and football seasons.

When ENMU began building a new football stadium on campus, Jim was among the first to donate with an annual $10,000 corporate sponsorship. Jim is also proud that his father James (attended), brothers Douglas (BBA 84), Michael (BS 98) and sister Lendra Hailey (MED 97, MA 97, BS 83) are all Eastern Alumni as well.

ENMU Foundation Honorees Volunteers of the Year Jacob and Janie Moberly Dr. Jacob (BS 55) and Janie Moberly (AA 55) have proven to be one of the most civically active couples you may be fortunate to meet. The pair met in first grade in Fields, New Mexico, and have been married for more than 67 years. Following graduation and Jake’s four years of dental school in Kansas City, the couple returned to New Mexico and the volunteer spirit struck. They began by asking for $50 donations for ENMU from everyone they knew. They were soon promoting Eastern throughout the state. In the late 1970s, Janie became a founding member of the Friends of Eastern Foundation. She served as vice president for 29 of her 41 years as a board member. Janie also served as an ENMU Regent for 12 years, while Jake and other dentists in Clovis began free dental services for underprivileged children. He also served on the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranch Board and Clovis Community College Foundation Board. Jake earned the Oustanding Alumni Award in 1970 and a Distinguished Service Award in 1987.

Philanthropist of the Year Dr. Gay Su Pinnell Dr. Gay Su Pinnell (BA 66) is Professor Emeritus in the School of Teaching and Learning at Ohio State University. With extensive experience in classroom teaching and research, she is well known in public education for developing and implementing comprehensive approaches to literacy education.

In 2017, Dr. Pinnell funded a $300,000, three-year grant to enhance the ENMU Child Development Center, adding a new classroom for 2- to 3-year-olds and giving ENMU students the opportunity to work with this younger age group as required for NM liscensure.

The Gay Su Pinnell Education Foundation funds her numerous grants, including providing Portales Municipal Schools with a K through grade 5 literacy grant that includes a three-day training. She provides similar support to schools in Columbus, Ohio and fundraises as a board member of the Columus Symphony and the Dublin Library.

outstanding alumni awards Karen Salb As an ENMU undergraduate, Karen Salb (BS 76) represented Portales in the 1968 Miss New Mexico Pageant, and in September of that year represented New Mexico in the 1969 Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey, bringing home the Miss Congeniality Award. She later was awarded the President’s Award, Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges, and Outstanding Young Women in America to round out her college career.

Karen opened a dance studio in Hobbs, New Mexico, building the Maciolek School of Dance with her husband, Dr. Thomas J. Salb (MS 72, BS 70). The Hobbs Jaycees named Karen the Outstanding Young Woman of Hobbs in 1980, as she was instrumental in sponsoring several ballet companies to perform there. In 1989, she founded the Maciolek Fine Arts Scholarship Trust.

Karen has served on the board of directors for the Southwest Symphony, Viva Santa Fe Productions, Hobbs Rotary Club, Miss New Mexico Scholarship Pageant, Lea County Commission for the Arts and the Salvation Army. She became a Rotarian in 1990, earning numerous honors from that international service organization.

Dr. LaWrence Minks Dr. Lawrence Minks’ (BA 70, BBA 69) journey from student to president emeritus was made possible through the love and support of late wife, Joan and his children Laura, Amanda, Joy and Aaron. Dr. Minks has been involved in higher education for more than 40 years, mentoring thousands of students and promoting economic and community service, organizational change and leadership development.

After graduating from Eastern, he spent a year as an instructor at Ohio Northern University, moving to corporate management with Miles Laboratories for five years. Minks earned a doctorate in business teaching (1980) from the School of Business at the University of Northern Colorado.

He returned to higher education in 1976, advancing from assistant professor to president working in Ohio, Virginia, Kentucky and Oklahoma. Dr. Minks served as president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University from 2009–14.

Upon retirement in 2017, he formed Lawrence C. Minks and Associates to continue his commitment and dedication to transformational leadership and change.

Donald Bonner Donald Bonner (BBA 62) came to Clovis as an airman in the U.S. Air Force in 1954, later attending ENMU. Don’s early career started at New Tex Outdoor Advertising in Clovis.

He later acquired the Clovis Pepsi Cola Bottling Company and then took on a Dr. Pepper and Seven-Up plant, operating both for many years before selling.

Bonner later purchased two New Mexico ranches and operated both for several years, turning them into first-class operations.

Don and wife, Gustenia, have generously supported Clovis Community College and the Lighthouse Mission.

Both organizations honored the couple with buildings named after them. They are very active in the First United Methodist Church, and until recently, Don volunteered by driving a van for after-school kids’ programs. Don assists the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home in Portales with many of the organization’s projects and plans to continue doing so for many years to come.

Former ENMU men’s basketball player Chukuka Emili (attended) recently inked a professional contract with RSV Eintracht Stahnsdorf in Germany. Emili becomes the ninth Greyhound in the last four years to sign a professional contract upon completing their college career.

The New City, New York native played just a single season at Eastern after transferring from Houston Baptist, but he finished his career with the third most blocks in program history with 60 in just one season of play.

“This really is just a dream come true,” Chukuka said. “I started playing basketball really late so I always felt like I was really behind everybody else. To be able to sign a professional contract now is just such a great feeling. I think I might be the only person from my hometown to ever sign a professional contract, and for me that just shows that I have come such a long way.”

The 6’8“ forward flourished in Coach Tres Segler’s high-pressure defensive system and finished 2018–19 with the third most rebounds in a single season in ENMU Men’s Basketball history with 214 for the year. The 60 blocks Emili accumulated is a program record for a single season as well.

Leroy Chavez (BS 74) competed on the Eastern New Mexico Cross Country team during the years of 1970–74 and earned NAIA District 7 All-District honors all four years of his collegiate career. Leroy was a vital member of the record setting 1973 NAIA National Championship and 1971 NAIA National Runner-Up teams and was inducted into the New Mexico Track and Cross Country Hall of Fame in 2016.

Jessie Poku (BAAS 12) holds school records for touchdown receptions in a career (26), and receptions in a season – 86 during the 2010 campaign. Jessie was named D2Football.com Honorable Mention All-American following that 2010 season in which he hauled in 86 catches for 932 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season. That same 2010 season, Jessie was also named to the Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Super Region Four Third Team and was selected to compete in the 2011 Cactus Bowl upon season’s end. Poku was named First Team All-Lone Star Conference in 2010 and 2009 and was an Honorable Mention All-Lone Star Conference selection in 2008.

Norma Stroik (BUS 99) has been synonymous with ENMU Athletics for more than 30 years and served as the department’s administrative office coordinator for 16 years. Norma has regularly attended and coordinated multiple athletic events in that time.

Jeff was named Second Team All-LSC following the 2000 season in which he hit .363 for the year and totaled 37 RBI while also serving as the team captain. Jeff’s play on the field and leadership in the clubhouse helped guide the Greyhounds to a 25-21-1 record and a third place finish in the 2000 Lone Star Conference South standings

Tennis 1998–02 Layla Turner (BSE 02) was a two-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American and named the 1999 Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year after winning the singles and doubles title alongside Julie Stiles (MS 02 BS 00) at regionals.

Layla went on to place sixth in singles and fifth in doubles at the National Tournament. Her outstanding play continued into her sophomore season as she led ENMU to a win at the regional tournament and a qualification into the NCAA Division II National Championships.
