Samuel Foote – The return of a Truronian This year sees the launch of a three-year project for Truro Festival focusing on a forgotten Truronian from the 18th century. In his day, Samuel Foote was the first stand-up comedian and known as the funniest man in London. He was a Cornishman with a larger-than-life personality, who wowed audiences at his tea parties in the fashionable coffee houses of Covent Garden. A specially commissioned installation has been created by artist Emilia Wharf to reintroduce the extraordinary life of Foote to Truro and many of the festivals events are aimed at celebrating and educating audiences about the first ever stand-up comedian! There will also be a display of archive material courtesy of Cornwall Record Office.

SATURDAY 2 APRIL 11 Kernow King

‘Minority Rapport’ 8pm

Salon Du Chocolat ‘Women only event’ 7pm

When chocolate was first brought to England in the 1600s, it was considered a taboo substance, enjoyed only by the scandalous and elite in private salons. Some of our finest literature was also once considered too provocative for public consumption and was heard in similar salon environments by only the boldest of ears! Scary Little Girls invites a female-only audience to join them for a stimulating and intimate evening of storytelling celebrating the relationship between salons, chocolate and forbidden literature! Expect tales which explore female desires from authors such as Daphne du Maurier, Ariana Franklin, John Keats and Nancy Mitford and of course enjoy chocolate treats too!

Where : Festival Marquee Cost : £10 Tickets available from www.crbo.co.uk or from Truro Tourist Information Centre, Boscawen St

Wherever there is a majority, there is a minority lurking quietly around the corner, waiting to get bigger and bigger until it grows enough to become top dog, king of the hill, the group everyone wants to belong to. Rebel armies, the pub darts team, political parties, chaps who drive Audi TT’s, religion, Cornwall, knitting clubs, men who wear crocs with socks…minorities are everywhere (there are also sub minority categories in minority groups, but that’s another show). Kernow King’s latest show, ‘Minority Rapport’ is (of course) about Cornwall and more of a Cornishman’s outlook on the rest of the world and where he and minorities fit in amongst a world of gigantic majorities. It answers many questions that you didn’t even know you wanted answering!

He was elected to The Royal Academy in 2013 and made a Fellow of The Royal British Society of Sculptors and a Fellow of Falmouth University the same year. He has undertaken a number of public commissions including the Rites of Dionysus for The Eden Project and The Drummer for Lemon Quay. Truro’s totally brilliant 2016…!

Mr Foote’s Other Leg: Illustrated talk by Ian Kelly May 26th An evening with actor and director Ian Kelly, fresh from the West End production of the hit play ‘Mr Foote’s Other Leg’. Ian will give an illustrated talk about his research into the life of the enigmatic Samuel Foote. For ticket info visit www.trurofestival.co.uk “Truro’s Sam Foote is one of the greatest ‘lost’ heroes of British culture - a wit and dangerous satirist, but so much more than that: a one-off hero in the history of comedy, history of medicine and even of crime writing – it’s wonderful, 250 years after he lost his leg and gained a Theatre Royal License - one of only three in the whole history of the London stage, that his hometown should celebrate what a Cornishman can do when faced with a challenge.” Ian Kelly

In a compact city centre, this strong and diverse mix is unique – Truro is not a clone of other towns. Its intriguing and eclectic offer of bars, restaurants, nightclubs, a cinema, the Hall for Cornwall, Truro Cathedral and the Royal Cornwall Museum make it a year round destination for those who live, work or visit the city. A Business Improvement District (BID) is a precisely defined geographical area of a town, city or any other commercial district where ratepayers have voted to invest collectively in local improvements that are in addition to those already delivered by the local authority.
