With a Scandi style aesthetic, and hand carved from ash wood, the design of the Nguni Heads was inspired by the horns of the indigenous Nguni cattle that wander the South African coastline. The horns have a minimalist appeal and can be used as a feature piece of wall art or as a functional wall hook with a twist. Adored for their artful versatility, Nguni Heads adorn the walls of many stylist’s homes. Visually stunning as a single feature, and spectacular when hung as a series. The small and medium Nguni Heads are available in both Natural and Ash Black.
EKTA Nguni Heads designer John Vogel has a design background in architecture and started making furniture as a student.
“I most enjoy exploring organic, nature inspired form, and the idea of form as an intuitive language which evokes an emotive response. After exploring work approaches in many materials I have chosen wood as my primary medium, I love the connection it has to the natural world and the fact that good forestry management can ensure a sustainable supply.
My design process involves moving to prototyping as early as possible, and evolving the design and production process alongside each other.”
Our work is all produced in our factory in Woodstock, Cape Town. We have a people oriented approach which includes training new staff from scratch and up skilling our workforce from handwork to management. Vogel is a family design and maker business run by husband and wife team John and Terri Vogel.
We strive for a closed cycle metabolism by designing smaller products that are made from our factory offcuts, minimising our waste outputs, as well as contributing towards tree planting.”
EKTA Firekeeper designer Knud Holscher graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1957. From 1960-64, he worked as a partner in the office of Arne Jacobsen as associate architect for the realisation of St. Catherine’s College, University of Oxford.
Knud has attracted international attention with products like d-line, a series of architectural fittings, spotlights for FLOS and the German light manufacturer ERCO, the bus shelters for JCDecaux and the Geberit sanitary products. Many of these iconic designs have become part of everyday life for people around the world.
Crafted from stainless steel with a matte black textured finish, and measuring a commanding 67cm in length, the FireKeeper is an attractive and ingenious tool for starting and tending fires in woodburning stoves, open fireplaces and outdoor grills. The idea comes from the American Indians who discovered how to invigorate a fire by blowing into the embers through a tube. The ‘fire keeper’ was the person who stayed behind in the camp while others went hunting or gathering food. The FireKeeper can be used as a fire blower as well as a poker. It performs the same function as a traditional bellows as it allows you to blow air through the tube directly into the embers. When not in use, the FireKeeper can be displayed on its magnetic holder that can be attached to the wall next to the fireplace.
Expertly crafted with beautiful weight and balance, its aesthetic appeal makes it ideal to showcase, like a piece of art.

The precision of Krynauw’s design aesthetic meets an intriguing connective illusion in these side tables. The Danish aesthetic is wholly present in the simplicity of the lines and forms that make up the design. The connective intricacies of the table legs add an element of intrigue and character. EKTA Holmes designer David Krynauw grew up in one of the largest forestry regions in South Africa. Being constantly surrounded by trees and timber, he developed an immense passion for the medium and started experimenting with it from a young age. In 2008, David decided to start his own furniture manufacturing business on his family farm in Piet Retief. His business grew steadily, and he moved to Johannesburg where he developed his own design language and method, enabling him to create anything – from a chair to a building – using parts and joining them in ingenious ways.
Krynauw’s work pushed the boundary in every possible way, and there is more to his designs than meets the eye. His attention to detail in the way his pieces are designed and created offers evidence of the mastery he holds over his craft. The accolades he has won creating bespoke wooden décor throughout a distinguished career speak volumes for the high regard in which he is held by the international design community. He now employs around 60 people, creating a wide variety of furniture pieces and architectural structures. David’s simplistic approach, ongoing passion, energy and love for his medium and craft is what sets him apart.

The Scala series - beautiful carpentry details Meticulous attention to detail has resulted in several attractive features: a slight upward curve of the corners an a narrow slit in the seam to hold an optional cushion in place. Another indication of the product's artisanal nature is the tenon-and-mortar appearance of the four legs on the surface of the bench.
