Why I Want to Be an English Teacher?

What would you like to be when you grow up? This question has followed me since I was four years old in pre-primary school. In that circumstance, I replied, “I want to be a veterinarian” because I love animals, and I thought that it could be glorious to help them, but after an accident my dog suffered, I realized that I would spend my time crying. Fortunately, that epiphany came to my mind when I was 14 years old in an English class. I remember that year was complicated for me, and many teachers were aware of my situation. They provided me with some pieces of advice and support during the whole process. I am still in debt to them. After that, I comprehended that the role of a teacher is not just only teach but being a model and a guide for their students, and through time I was able to reflect how they organize their time and are aware about our necessities. That was my confirmation to study pedagogy in English. So, that led me to the conclusion that I want to become an English teacher for two reasons. The first one is because I love languages and learning about cultures, and the second one is related to being a bridge for those who believe in their dreams. I consider that English is not just a subject but a way to achieve goals in life.

From May 13 to June 17, of the first semester of 2022, the students Valeria Alvarado, Mario Larger and Lisette Fernandez from tenth semester conducted the workshop "Speak English Defeat Anxiety" through sessions for students from other semesters of the English Teaching Program, so that they could overcome anxiety and frustration when speaking in a second language. "This workshop was born from the desire to help our classmates to have a better professional and personal development, regardless of the supposed barriers that their own beliefs made them believe'' says Valeria Alvarado.

Speak English defeat anxiety

In this regard, Bárbara Cañulef and María José Quezada from the sixth semester pointed out that the workshop was an excellent help for them, where they did fun and friendly activities that helped them to obtain confidence through positive feedback, which helps them today in their practicums. At the same time, they believe it is important that this workshop continues, especially to help the new students.

A blue family

ASD or Autism spectrum disorder is a condition that nowadays many people have to deal with. ASD can affect the daily life of a person and how the person relates with people and their own family. As a sister of someone who has this condition, I will speak and write in a close perspective about ASD because at present this disorder is full of stereotypes and even myths.

In the past autistic people had to attend special schools or go to other places where they could be because society was not prepared for them and their requirements. Now, inclusiveness is a word that has become very popular and in some way an autistic person has been involved in it. We have to consider and keep in mind that when you meet a human being with autism you have to be aware of their triggers but also limitations.

In the classroom, many teachers do not have enough knowledge to teach someone with ASD, for that reason a lot of families have to homeschool their kids. In my own experience, I can see and observe that the city of Osorno is not prepared for autistic students. The lack of schools, professionals and knowledge is unacceptable. Right now, the ASD cases are going up and I consider that only privileged people can give a proper therapy to their autistic children which is super sad and discriminatory. Furthermore, the persons in charge of Chilean education are only neurotypical people. I would like to ask them if this is inclusivity to them and also where is the neurodiversity representation.

Informative 4

Now, going into the case of the family side and situation. You can notice the big gap between someone neurotypical and someone neurodiverse, the routine, the habits, the food that you eat even where your bills go can change completely. Before my brother was born, I could never imagine or think of going to therapy because in the country I live this is a privilege. Now, I think but also analyze, in the poorest families with this condition, what do they do? In my own personal experience, I consider impossible that someone who has ASD and doesn’t have access to medical service and support can develop as a “normal person.”

Finally, I can argue that ASD communities need more representation, and also they need a more inclusive environment, not only in the schools but in all their different spaces that they can get involved in, such as jobs and medical services. Furthermore, I consider that this community should have some support from the government association as laws to protect them and autistic-friendly spaces where they can be comfortable. Also, there is a need to have more awareness, knowing that many times it is their own family that has to pay for the therapy of their children. It is not only important, but fundamental to include in our society all types of conditions. In this way, we don't have to talk anymore of inclusivity, we will have to talk about coexistence.

SONAPLES conference

It is a nationwide association of higher education teachers of foreign languages. Teachers, researchers and students of Universities across the country gather every two years to discuss meaningful topics and share experiences. The main themes of this year’s conference were interculturality, multiculturality and Decolonization in Language Teaching.

One of the main speakers was Dra Silvia Castillo Sánchez, Director of the Office of Indigenous Peoples from Universidad de Los Lagos. She presented a lecture called ‘Teaching and Learning of indigenous languages. A contribution to the exercise of cultural and linguistic rights. Her speech was fascinating, we were able to realize that we still hear some really awful racist comments in which indigenous people are considered inherently warlike.

At the beginning we cannot find the wrong side of those phrases because we have heard them so many times, but if you reflect about it, they directly allude to demeaning stereotypes of indigenous people. We can consider that this conference was an invitation to reflect on the impact that other cultures like Mapuche, Huilliche, among others from other cultures have. She considers that “languages” can be a live memory, philosophy, turf, ways to live, diversity and heritage.

One day in the theater

On July 8th of 2022 at 4 pm in the Gabriela Mistral auditorium, the university community was delighted with the theater performance “Ánimas de día claro” by Alejandro Sieveking, that was presented by the students who belong to different programs in charge of Professor Claudio Yañez, who stated that the work done by the students during one semester has been fruitful, because they entered without any knowledge about theater and with little experience, thus, watching them create a montage like this one is a great pride for everyone.

Anima de día Claro tells the story of a group of sisters who have died, and they turned into souls, spirits who need to accomplish their dreams to pass away to the other world. Luzmira desires to give a kiss of love, because that was the only thing she never aimed for in her life. This story was told in two acts by two different groups of students who belong to the theater workshop. Claudio Yañez affirms “It is so interesting that students belong to different programs, because they have diverse ways to face the problems and the performance, which is fulfilling”.

Pinning ceremony

During the afternoon of September 7th of 2022, a pinning ceremony was held at Universidad de los Lagos in Osorno. In this ceremony, the students of third year from the English Teaching Program received a pin that symbolizes the official start of their practicum in educational establishments. On the other hand, students from fifth year received their certificate of completion of their bachelor's degree in education.

At the beginning of this event, the student from fourth year of the program Marcela Lobos gave a warm welcome to the students involved and their families to start the ceremony. Then she presented professor Verónica Ormeño who talked in the name of the Director from the Pedagogy Department, professor Héctor Maturana to give an introduction of the important meaning that these processes have for the students from third year as well as the students from fifth year.

After professor Ormeño’s Speech, Miss Soledad Sandoval who is the coordinating professor of practicums of the program, gave a brief speech about the coming challenges that the students will face at the moment of starting this practicum and the competences that are expected from them to develop as future teachers during this process.

Learning comes from the inside, not the
Flavio Palma 5th year student of English pedagogy

I never thought I’d want to teach as a job, until I failed at Engineering After stumbling for almost five years with advanced mathematics, statistics and programming, I had lost the scholarship I used to study. It was a blessing in disguise, because it gave me the push I needed to say “I don’t want to become an Engineer”. I talked with my parents, and we agreed that I could stop studying to be an Engineer, but only if I continued studying something else. And that’s when I decided I was going to become an English teacher.

During those five years, I only had one class of English. It was something very basic that was only worth for programming I wanted more, I needed more. So I spent the last 2 years of my Engineering classes learning English in my free time. There were extra classes that the university offered, but I had to travel to the other side of the city in the late afternoon during winter. So I learned by myself, listening to more music and reading articles. Alongside this I started making friendships over the internet with native speakers, and I realized that learning a language is not just comprehending, but also expressing oneself in a new, different way.

There’s a saying in my family, “things always happen for a reason”. What it means is that sometimes bad things happen because they will bear fruit to something better. In that regard, losing my scholarship happened because I enjoyed English so much, I would rather stop studying Engineering and become an English teacher. Being able to teach others to express themselves in a new way makes me feel so full of energy and hope for the future, that we can say what we want to say in many ways, and nobody needs to remain silent. I used to be a very shy kid, and I wished there was someone who would help me see things the way I see them now. Well, now I can become that someone!

Some of Professor Avila’s words and opinions

“Usually, active pauses are exercises that we do to make up for the academic spaces… we try to release a bit of tensions, to stretch and flexibilize a bit our shoulders, legs and neck”

Vivian Millan with Constanza Boldt interviewed Sergio Avila Valencia, part of the department of physical activity’s science with the role of academic and chief of the program, the objective behind the interview was the initiative that has been present regarding to active pauses and the suicide prevention day.

During the month of September many activities were carried out relating to active pauses and the main responsible of this was the department of physical activity’s science together with student center of the program. The purpose of those activities was release students and teachers from that constant tension which you can feel in the classroom always, through an active pause that it is not too long, just a duration of 8 or 10 minutes, giving the possibility to stretch and breath in a better way, through this method the students even can recharge their energy and start again a class with the best disposition possible.

Fun space 18

Regarding to the suicide prevention day, the department bring a stand in the main aisle of the central hall. Where they had triptychs with meaningful information, with no mention of psychological help, they also put a bulletin board in which you could add a sticker with your motivations to keep trying day after day written

“There are many things that you can read and rescue from this activity” affirmed Professor Sergio

An activity like this had not been done before, the only thing similar to this has been done in collaboration with other pedagogical careers regarding to active breaks, managing stress through meditation.

"It is important that students, teachers and others know how to manage stress".

When the interviewers mentioned that in Chile, suicide rates are very high and among university students this rate increases, the professor answered saying that the proposed activities are necessary instances, even more considering the pandemic context we live in, with no mention, that it is necessary to give a focus to our mental health. When we asked that if he is looking for doing more things like this in the future, he affirmed, saying that he has every intention to continue with this type of activities but that it mainly depended on direction. According to the professor, his motivation to participate in these acts of help was due to his necessity of helping and that it came from his compassion, altruism and empathy.

Quoting him "I am anti-talk, I prefer concrete actions".

Professor Adams at SONAPLES and her growth in the work field

“I think that I have something good that I can’t stand out, that I like working with people and I have a very good team. I think that this is one of the keys to success. To believe in people, to be able to rely on someone. I am the lead, but I have a team and we work together and that is the thing”

Constanza Boldt interviewed Marcia Adams Monsalve, teacher of English and a master in applied linguistics, this interview was done with the purpose of knowing more about miss Marcia’s new position and about her presentation at SONAPLES event.

SONAPLES event was a successful encounter between many specialists and experts on language. Quoting Professor Adams “For us, is a very important event, a scientific event, because this is an association that has so many years. Here we have a tradition, former professors from this program have participated as members of this society, so I think that we are following a sort of tradition being in contact with the society, and also I can say that this is an important platform for professors of English to share the recent research about the language and the different languages and also the possibility to exchange ideas, to get to know new people, new members that can help us to stablish networks of cooperation and networks for collaboration in new researches and some other important ideas”

The event had a duration of 3 days where many students and teachers could learn about a lot of topics and also, make different questions about themto the presenters Miss Marcia of course, also had a presentation where she could tell the audience what they did during the process of the change from the former program to the new one. They presented some activities that they normally do (…) For them was a very nice experience, there were no problems with the audience, on the contrary, the audience congratulated them in the sense that listeners thought that it was a very good possibility, in this case, to join literature with some other aspects and specifically with one of the issues that some of the “exponents” were presenting at SONAPLES event, the one that it was connected to the decolonization of the language.

20

Miss Marcia´s presentation had an interesting topic, and everybody was into it, but according to her, the main problem during the development of the presentation was the time, following her words “I would say that time was a problem in order to fulfill as it was meant to be, but I would say that it was the only problem, not with the students, not with the process, the time. In order to finish what I wanted at the first time”.

Besides the SONAPLES event, one topic that was of interest to us was to know about Professor Adams' new role. Marcia Adams is a Ministry of Education certified mentor in the area of English. Her areas of disciplinary development include English literature, academic literacy and multimodality studies and in January 2022 she became the head of the pedagogy department. Her thoughts about the new position were “I think that perhaps all of the activities that I have done from the very beginning ´ til today it has been done with a commitment, with all the desire for my students at the beginning, but also for the institution, so I have fulfilled so many roles”.

Miss Marcia has had a long path of work, full of experiences and different moments that have enriched her in countless ways. despite all this, she was selected for such an important position, she said that her first reaction was "why? if I am not an education expert. Because, as you may know, the department is completely different, it has to do with discipline". Although, she said “I think that it has been a very nice and demanding challenge for me as a professional (…) I can say that at the beginning was not easy, it was something very stressful and demanding because it was something new, but now I can say that I have the rhythm so every day I work very hard in order to become better in my duties” one thing that she mentioned was “The only thing that I was told at the beginning not to teach, it was advisable not to teach, because this is a very demanding position, so I said “no, I can’t leave it, that’s part of my soul and I can’t leave it” ”

“Some people told me to wait, but I didn’t listen to anyone and I just jumped at the chance! It turned out that a leap in the dark can actually take you to another continent”
Camilo Toledo
5th year student of English pedagogy

Where are you studying, Camilo?

I’m studying at Universidad de Málaga, Andalucía, Spain. I’ve been here three months.

Can you tell us something about the University and the city?

It’s a beautiful historical city. Studying here has been much harder than studying here has been much harder than studying in Chile. Fortunately, I have met really cool people, true friends indeed , who have been my emotional support. About my classes, I’m taking three subjects: English for specific purposes , Discourse Analysis and Masterpieces of English Literature . I chose the last two because I’m just passionate about Linguistics and Literature. It was this insane love that helped me pass all my linguistic courses.

What was your motivation to apply to this scholarship?

I always wanted to travel abroad to study. I don’t know why I like studying so much, (and at the same time I don’t). I really felt like this was an opportunity to fulfill those dreams. I wasn’t really sure whether to do it or not. Some people told me to wait, but I didn’t listen to anyone and I just jumped at the chance! It turned out that a leap in the dark can actually take you to another continent.

How long will you be staying there?

I have three months left before going back to Osorno. My visa expires on the 13th of March and I will return on the 10th (almost beyond recommended limits, I know. But what’s the point in life if you don’t live it intensely?

Is there anything you would like to tell your fellow students from this University?

I’d like to say that it doesn’t matter in what conditions you started University, it doesn’t matter if your mental health does not let you see what you are worth, and it doesn’t matter what others say. You can do anything you want if you visualize it. When I started University, I felt really insecure, I doubted myself (I still do). However, I thrived with effort and help from the people I love and those who love me. And here I am, writing my thesis in Europe (EUROPE, can you believe it? Me neither!) pretty successfully. (I pray everyday so I don’t have a mental breakdown in the middle of my thesis defense. I’m truly in my thriving era.

Camilo successfully defended his thesis in January and he is now a teacher of English.

The Importance of Critical Thinking for Teachers and Candidate Teachers

Critical Thinking is a complex process of deliberation which involves a wide range of skills. It is kind of a skill related to "reading between the lines". It means understanding the hidden meanings and inferences from what is written and said. In addition, critical thinking has another meaning which is observing events, and perceiving what we hear and read from different point of views. We can make this definition clearer with an analogy: There were six blind men and they touched an elephant. The first man touched its body and said "it is like a wall”. Second one touched elephant's tusks and told "An elephant is like a spear". Third man touched its trunk and said " An elephant is like a snake". Then, the other three men touched the elephant. They all gave different answers to the question "What is an elephant?" So, critical thinking is similar to this story. Every person improves different ways of perceiving events around them with critical thinking.

Additionally, it can be said that having the ability to think critically is significant for both teachers and candidate teachers in many aspects: Firstly, thanks to critical thinking skills, we become better problem solvers because we are able to look at and understand things from variety of perspectives, and being a good problem solver is a must for teachers and candidate teachers since classroom is an unpredictable and a spontaneous environment.

Firstly, thanks to critical thinking skills, we become better problem solvers because we are able to look at and understand things from variety of perspectives, and being a good problem solver is a must for teachers and candidate teachers since classroom is an unpredictable and a spontaneous environment.

Secondly, critical thinking helps us in evaluating our teaching performance reflectively. It means we can raise awareness about the good sides and the sides which need to be improved. This will provide a better and more beneficial teaching style for our students.

Last but not least, if teachers or candidate teachers are capable of thinking critically, they become good listeners since they try to understand the person they are listening to more deeply and critically. It has a big effect on becoming a skillful teacher as listening comes first to understand students ' expectations and their needs to meet them.

As a consequence, critical thinking is a key qualification in order to possess successful teaching. All teachers and candidate teachers must improve their critical thinking skills and integrate these skills to their classrooms to have meaningful teaching and learning process.

It was my first day at the laboratory. People always told me that place was strange, but I never really cared. The first task that they gave me was to observe and report the behavior of the Experiment 412. They told me that I had to be careful with her because she wasn’t an average patient. I went to the room, and I saw her, she had a special thing. She had beautiful eyes, with a unique purple color. Her hair was shiny brown and her skin was white as snow. When our eyes interlocked, I felt how my body started to shake, I lost my breath and my hands started to sweat.

“I never saw you here before, who are you?” The girl said, her voice was like the voice of an angel, so harmonious and sweet. For a moment, I couldn’t talk, but with my shaking voice I pronounced some words. “H..hello, my name is Johny,” “Johny, such a beautiful name. I’m Mary… ” she started to count with her fingers. “I’m 19 years old.” she said with a sweet smile. She came closer to take one of my hands. “Could you help me to escape?”. I felt how my body was frozen and I couldn’t say no. “Yes” I said almost immediately. “Ok, I need you to do something, can you find a car? and normal clothes.”

During the week I did all the things that she told me to do. I didn’t even notice how fast things were happening but everything was ready by the time she asked for. The day of her escape had arrived, and I felt so nervous. I knew what I was doing was wrong but I couldn’t control my actions. It was time, I turned off all the electricity in the building and I moved fast to her room. She was there, waiting for me. I gave her the clothes and turned around so she could change. We did everything according to the plan and we got out of the laboratory quickly. When the electricity generator was activated, the alarm started to sound. “Mary! We need to hurry up!” I screamed while I was trying to take her arm. We started to run to find the car, but it wasn't there so we went to hide in the woods.

28
412

“All units to section 4B, I repeat, all units to section 4B. We have an escape attempt. The suspect is very dangerous, and it seems that she is not alone. We need back up immediately”… went on the voice of the operator as we listened to the radio that I had stolen the night before from a sleeping guard. The urgency, persistency of the messages only made us run faster. Strong lights started pointing at us, and the sound of sirens and screams behind us made my heartbeat rise even faster as I didn’t know it was possible. “We have identified the other suspect; his name is Johny Brown. He is 1.70 cm tall, has brown, shoulder length hair and blue eyes. The girl must be captured alive, the boy’s life doesn’t matter” A shiver ran down my spine when I heard such orders. I tightened my grip on Mary’s arm and kept running without looking back. My chest felt as if it was burning with each breath and my heart beat harder and harder. But I couldn’t slow down. I knew that if we did that, it would be the end for both of us. After a few minutes, the noise behind us started to fade and I saw the fence that indicated the end of the forest, a few meters in front of us.

We got close to the fence and to make sure that it didn’t have electricity I picked up a stick from the ground and threw it against the fence. It burned in seconds. I panicked as I heard footsteps getting closer. “Step back” said Mary while she focused on the fence. She raised her hands towards it and her eyes started shining with a bright purple. Suddenly flashing lights came out of the barrier and the electricity shut down. I didn’t have time to process what I had witnessed, so I just let out a sigh of relief and I walked closer to Mary to help her cross over the fence. Once she was safe I started to climb the fence waiting for her to help me. But it was too late as agents with guns surrounded me from behind. I looked at her with desperate eyes hoping she would do something so I could escape with her. She started to raise her hand in my direction and to my surprise she began waving at me with a smile on her face. Her eyes were glowing again as the electricity came back to the fence.

Mary’s POV

I couldn’t stop smiling. Everything went exactly as I planned. That stupid man was so easy to control, I got into his mind with no effort. I could hear him screaming in pain as I ran in the opposite direction. One small sacrifice for my long awaited freedom.

“ Consequences of the covid-19 pandemic on English language teaching students ”

This investigation’s main objective is to determine the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Universidad de Los Lagos English Teaching Program students’ learning from the third, fourth, and fifth years of the Osorno campus. The specific objectives of this investigative process are: to know students’ academic performance in a spectrum of “pre pandemic” and “while pandemic,” to identify the faculty members’ perception of the effects of the pandemic on their students’ learning, and, finally, to know students’ perception regarding the effects of the pandemic on their own learning process. Regarding the achievement of these specific objectives, the general one, the second one, and the third one were successfully achieved; the first one was partially achieved, mainly because of logistical aspects. The approach used in this investigation is a mixed one because it integrates the quantitative approach and the qualitative approach, which makes the investigation itself a mixed one. The processing of the information gathered through both of the instruments regarding the qualitative data was done by establishing a series of categories of analysis; in regards to the quantitative data, a process of graphing the data was done. Regarding the results and the conclusions of this investigative process, it can be pointed out that the main consequence of the pandemic on students’ learning was the obstacle it provoked on it. This obstacle was generated by a variety of factors, mainly because of the radical and sudden shift of the students’ learning environment and the subsequent weakening of

their mental health.
