That's because of DNA. Our DNA contains genes that make each person in the world different – no two people look, think or act the same. We pass down our genes through generations. Scientists can test your DNA to find out which part of the world your ancestors were from.

TOPIC 1

When you look in the mirror, do you see your father’s smile? Maybe you take after your mother or look like a grandparent?

Your family’s history may be a mystery to you, but there’s a way to find out about it. It’s called genealogy, and it’s the study of the people you are related to. Genealogy helps you put together your family history. It starts with the relatives you know, such as parents and grandparents, and then you can learn about ancestors who lived and died before you were born.

Read the text given above and write T (True) or F (False) for the following questions. 1. A DNA test can show where in the world our ancestors lived. 2. You can find out the number of relatives you have in a DNA test. 3. Genealogy is the history of our past and present family members. 4. Relatives who are alive could have information about ancestors. 5. A family tree shows how you are related to other people in your family. 6. A detective can help you to find information about your family.

Coral polyps are truly the animals that helped make the world. For millions of years, tiny coral polyps have been building underwater cities. The polyps create sornething called limestone which they then live on top of.

TOPIC 3

CITIES BENEATH THE SEA

There are huge amounts of limestone under the ocean in islands and mountains. These limestone islands and mountains are called coral reefs. Some reefs are bigger than anything people have ever made. The Egyptians used it to build the Great Pyramids. We have used limestone to build many buildings, and crushed limestone is used to make cement.

A Variety of Life Living coral reefs are amazing 'cities beneath the sea' that are full of life. The reefs develop well in the warm oceans near the Equator. Arnong the world's most colourful places, coral reefs are full of brightly-coloured fish. Reef fish are an important food source for humans and many are caught for food around the world.

12

The Biggest of Them All

TOPIC 3

CITIES BENEATH THE SEA

The Great Barrier Reef, in Australia, is the largest reef in the world. It is 2,000 kilometres long. Over 400 types of coral, 1,500 species of fish and approximately 4,000 types of mollusc live in, on and around the reef. Each year, thousands of visitors come to see this remarkable world beneath the waves. However, there are rules — visitors can only visit 5% of the reef. In this way, they can still enjoy the reef while it rernains protected for future generations.

Threats to Coral Reefs In recent years, a number of dangers have threatened coral reefs and the life that depends on them. One of the biggest threats is an illegal way of fishing.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME WRITING: AN INFORMAL LETTER Student will be able to write an informal letter correctly Student will be able to understand the format of informal letter student will be able to correct contraction and expression in the letter

21

WHAT IS INFORMAL LETTER An informal letter is a non-official letter that we usually use to write to our friends, family or relatives. These letters are personal letters that are not used for official purposes. There could be many reasons for which we write these letters to our family and friends. For example, if we want to inform them about our achievement in school or college, then we write them a letter to spread our personal news

TOPIC 5

Let's read

Since, the letter is informal thus the salutation is usually given by ‘Dear’, such as Dear (name of friend/name of uncle or aunty) or Dear Father/Mother, etc. Unlike formal letters, you don’t have to mention the subject line for informal letters. But the address of senders and receivers of the letter has to be mentioned necessarily.

22

There could be many topics to write informal letters. Let us see here some of them:

TOPIC 5

Informal Letter Examples

Inviting a friend for a ceremony say for a birthday Calling a friend for a trip or holiday Asking sorry or apologizing to someone for mistakes you have done Congratulating a friend for his success or achievement Writing just to ask for the well-being of a person Invitation for a marriage Asking help from someone Informing about someone’s demise in family or friends

Based on the format given, answer all the question by scanning the qr code.

Topic Six READY, STEADY, G0 !

Student will be able to identify transforming sentences student will be able to compare between verb, noun, adverb and adjective student will be able to match a sentence usinh transforming sentence

25

TOPIC 6

How do you differentiate between a noun, verb, adverb, and adjective? A noun is a solid thing in the sentence. It could be London, Margaret or box - places, people and objects all count as nouns. You can think of the entire sentence being a tent and nouns are the pegs that keep it firmly stuck to reality.

The verb describes what the nouns actually do which is why they are patronisingly called doingwords. If Margaret jumps, then she does a jump, meaning jumps is the verb. Verbs are important because without them nothing actually happens or changes.

Adverb literally means to the verb, because adverbs describe how the verb is done. Adverbs often end in 'ly', like quickly, furiously, excitedly or dully. In the phrase he spoke loudly, loudly describes how he spoke, so is an adverb. The adjective describes the noun. It acts like an adverb but to the thing rather than the action. They can range from simple colours and sizes (the big red shoe, where big and red are both adjectives, because they describe the shoe) to metaphysical statements, like metaphysical, because it describes statement, the noun. State, incidentally, is a verb, because it is something you can do.

What Are Preposition? A preposition is a word or group of words used before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to show direction, time, place, location, spatial relationships, or to introduce an object. Some examples of prepositions are words like "in," "at," "on," "of," and "to."

TOPIC 9

PREPOSITION

Prepositions in English are highly idiomatic. Although there are some rules for usage, much preposition usage is dictated by fixed expressions. In these cases, it is best to memorize the phrase instead of the individual preposition.

Rule of Preposition? Prepositions of Direction - To refer to a direction, use the prepositions "to," "in," "into," "on," and "onto. Prepositions of Time - To refer to one point in time, use the prepositions "in," "at," and "on. Prepositions of Place - To refer to a place, use the prepositions "in" (the point itself), "at" (the general vicinity), "on" (the surface), and "inside" (something contained). Prepositions of Location - To refer to a location, use the prepositions "in" (an area or volume), "at" (a point), and "on" (a surface). Prepositions of Spatial Relationships - To refer to a spatial relationship, use the prepositions "above," "across," "against," "ahead of,"

42

Prepositions Following Verbs and Adjectives Some verbs and adjectives are followed by a certain preposition. Sometimes verbs and adjectives can be followed by different prepositions, giving the phrase different meanings. To find which prepositions follow the verb or an adjective, look up the verb or adjective in an online dictionary, such as Merriam Webster, or use a corpus, such as The Corpus of Contemporary American English. Memorizing these phrases instead of just the preposition alone is the most helpful.

that's entertainment

What is Speech Writing? Speech writing is an extremely boring task, but it becomes an interesting task if it includes humor. Usage of funny facts to have the audience agree with your point of view can go a long way in convincing them that you are right. What is an Entertaining Speech? An entertaining speech is designed to amuse the audience while delivering the message. These speeches are meant to entertain the audience and make them laugh. Like other types of speeches, entertainment speeches should communicate a clear message. However, the manner of speaking is not a formal way and slightly different from traditional styles.

Practice and read clearly in class. My life is art. Art is my life. – Jerry’s Artarama

TOPIC 10

that's entertainment

What is art? Even an art essay may struggle to fully define art. Being an artist isn’t just about putting pencil to paper, or brush to canvas. Art can and does mean so much more than that, to so many people. Art is a way of seeing the world, a way manner of expression, oftentimes our need to create art feels like a compulsion. As artists, we simply must create! Art may be a way to explore your world or your imagination. In this way, life is art. Art may inspire a beginning painter to take steps into learning a new medium, or an accomplished artist to experiment with a new technique. Art is teaching, art is learning. Art can be exciting, empowering, and an expression of love. Art can be a challenge. Art can be: both frustrating and rewarding at the same time, leading to a sense of accomplishment — or a determination to do more. Art can be a message: of politics, of peace, of brutality, or beauty. Art can be an escape, an idealization, or simply a means of play. Art can be anything and everything you let it be! Beyond what art is for the artist lays what art is for those who behold it. Countless art essays have been written about particular pieces of art. Interpreting and trying to understand the meaning of artwork can challenge even the most intuitive person. Art may have as profound an effect on its audience as it does on the artist itself. Viewing certain works of art may evoke strong feelings or cause someone to consider something they previously never pondered. While an artist may have felt inspired when creating a piece, the finished piece may then inspire those who view it. So, pick up that art paper, that pencil, that paintbrush, that pastel, and let art take you where it will. Explore and experiment, do something different: draw a picture upside-down, paint en plein air, try a new medium you think you hate, make a collaborative piece with a fellow artist — push your boundaries! After all, life is art and Art is a way to grow as a person, so take advantage!

Gerunds and infinitives can function as the subject of a sentence or the object of a verb

Infinitives and gerunds are noun forms. If used before the main verb, they are the subject of the verb; after the main verb, they are the object of the verb.
