Lititz Meals On Wheels - Still Running On Volunteer Power BY ANN MEAD ASH

eorge Nickel, president of the Lititz Meals on Wheels board, also sometimes serves as cook in the Lititz Church of the Brethren (COB) kitchen where the meals are prepared, and he is not reluctant to pepper his speech with culinary terms. “The secret to our sauce is that we are all volunteer,” proclaimed Nickel of the organization that serves more than 30,000 meals a year at a nominal per- day fee for each client. Up to seven volunteers meet at 7:30 a.m. on Mondays through Fridays at the church, located at 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. “We pack the cold lunches and the hot lunches,” said volunteer team leader Jean Steffy, who noted on that particular day the hot meal included beef chili, a corn muffin, and glazed carrots, and the cold meal featured a spring mix salad, a ham salad sandwich, cheese, a banana, and milk, among other items. The organization serves about 60 clients in the Warwick School District. Volunteer drivers handle the four delivery routes. Volunteers, especially those willing to cook, are needed.

Lititz Meals on Wheels dates back to 1973, when three local women Polly Eshleman, Jane Reynolds, and Arlene Shannon - approached Lititz COB about using the kitchen to feed 25 clients. “They saw a need to feed the community,” said Nickel. Nickel’s mother-in-law, Evelyn Helter, did not work on Mondays, so she volunteered to cook, something she continued to do regularly for the next 30 years. Later, Nickel’s brother-in-law became a cook. When Nickel retired from computer work in 2012, he joined the volunteer forces. “I came here to cook and shop,” said Nickel, who because of his background was quickly drafted to transfer recipes and menu plans to computers. Recipes for only 20 to 50 people were expanded and moved to computer files. Menu plans that were set for about a month were adjusted to more than two months. “We vary the menu,” said Nickel, who noted that favorites of the 112 rotating dishes include roast beef, spaghetti and meatballs, and crab cakes. “We find a menu we can scale up and tailor to our clients,” said Nickel. “We have added 50 good recipes in the past seven years.”

Historical Foundation Plans Holiday Events The Lititz Historical Foundation has organized two safe Christmasthemed events this year. Modifications have been made to both the annual Community Christmas Carol Sing and the Christmas Candlelight Tour to conform to COVID-19 restrictions. The annual carol sing will be held on Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. The Lititz Historical Foundation, in conjunction with the Lititz Moravian Archives, will hold the event at Lititz Moravian

Church, 8 Church Square, Lititz. The free outdoor gathering will require attendees to wear masks and remain socially distant. Organizers note that Church Square is large enough to allow attendees

plenty of room to spread out, and that attendance will be capped at 200 persons. The Moravian Trombone Choir will play while Lititzarea residents who attend engage in singing holiday classics. See Historical Foundation pg 2
