Brickerville United Lutheran Church, 340 E. 28th Division Highway, Lititz, invites the community to its fall fun celebration, which will take place around a bonfire in the church picnic grove on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. In addition to the large bonfire, the event will include children’s games, a costume contest, and free food and beverages. When Carley Bilindabagabo, events coordinator with HOPE International, was asked about the speaker for the 2018 HOPE International breakfast, she responded with enthusiasm. “We have someone special this year: Alex Nuñez, president and CEO of Esperanza International, our partner program in the Dominican Republic,” said a smiling Bilindabagabo. The 2018 breakfast will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Doors will open at 7 a.m., and check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. This year, the event will be held

on the same day as the Extraordinary Give, Lancaster County’s largest day of online giving. In the Dominican Republic, where about 40 percent of the population lives below the poverty level, Esperanza provides a branch of HOPE that supports associates as they help themselves in an effort to alleviate poverty. Through savings groups, Esperanza can provide capital in a commitment to end poverty and foster transformation to those the organization serves. Nuñez began serving Esperanza in March 2012, when she became vice president of public affairs and Caribbean investment. See HOPE Breakfast pg 7

When the Rotary Club of Lancaster/ Franklin & Marshall (F&M) College Charitable Basketball Extravaganza started nearly 40 years ago, the idea behind the event was to fill an empty spot in the January F&M basketball schedule. Bruce Holran, then F&M director of public relations, approached then school athletic director Dr. William Marshall with the idea to establish a four-team men’s collegiate basketball tournament early in January. The event would bring people to the college and raise funds for a local nonprofit organization. Since that time, the event has grown dramatically, now including eight top men’s and women’s NCAA Division III See Basketball Tournament pg 12
