At Harvest Fest, LCS Will Display Its Enrichment Process

In the fall, producers harvest what they’ve spent time watering, feeding and nurturing.

At Lititz Christian School (LCS), they’re harvesting community servants, lifelong learners and productive citizens.

LCS’ upcoming event is designed to provide a glimpse into the school’s growing process.

“We’re equipping minds, enriching souls and empowering lives,” said Maegan Jones, LCS’ marketing director. “We take kids through rigorous academics, and they’re based in the Bible. We provide a great education, and we’re preparing students from kindergarten on up so they can be successful adults.”

LCS will host its fifth annual Harvest Fest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the school, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. The community outreach event is free to attend, and all are invited.

The rain date for the Harvest Fest is Sunday, Oct. 19, from 2 to 6 p.m.

LCSA Seeks To Put Graduates to Work

Preparing local students to be valuable employees in an ever-changing work climate is not a job for one individual, one group or even one institution.

It takes an alliance. It takes a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) alliance. It takes Lancaster County STEM Alliance (LCSA).

“In the business community, there was a lot of talk that students were graduating and needed to

Andora Is Right Back Where It Started From

They got the band back together.

Formed in 1975 while students at Hempfield High School, members of the group Andora reunited in 2022, and it feels so good.

Andora consists of Lancaster Township resident Thomas Richards, who sings and plays the rhythm guitar; Ron Sharpe of Millersville, who plays the bass and sings; East Earl resident David Chambers, who does vocals and plays the guitar; and drummer Curt Ruhl of Denver. Richards and Chambers started playing music together in East Petersburg when they were approximately 10 years old. “We had the entire band packed in a little red wagon,” said Richards. “It was one drum, one cymbal, (Chambers’) amp, and a guitar.” Sharpe and Ruhl joined about six years later. “I don’t know how we all got together, but I do remember that the first big thing we played was a Battle of the Bands at Hempfield High School,” Richards said. “We had a very unusual rehearsal spot. We rented a storage unit at a place called Stowaway. I think they had one plug for power, no heat. But we’d rehearsed there, and we rehearsed at somebody’s house. We played a Battle of the Bands, and we won.”

The group settled on the name Andora, but the details are a bit fuzzy. Sharpe pointed out that on the television show “Bewitched,” Samantha’s mother’s name is Endora. There is a country on the Iberian Peninsula named Andora.

“Somehow we got to talking and came up with Andora instead of Endora,” said Sharpe.

Andora performed together for 18 months. Then, as Journey sang in 1983, the members went their “separate ways.” Some members even sold their equipment while others performed in different bands.

The quartet mostly kept in contact, and Richards reached out to his bandmates after seeing an advertisement for an open mic night. As Jake Blues said to his brother, Elwood, in the movie “Blues Brothers,” “Hey, man, we’re getting the band back together.”

“Once you’ve played, you always have the bug to play,” Richards said. “Once you perform, you always want to perform. I thought maybe we could get together for the open mic night.”

He went to work. “I knew where Dave was, so I called Dave, and I knew how to get hold of Ron,” Richards recalled. The three met at the Hurricane Grill & Tavern in Columbia, fitting since Andora has been rocking people like a hurricane ever since. “We decided on three or four songs that we still remembered, and we played,” said Richards. “It was fun as usual, and then the phone calls started. Do we want to do this again?”

The answer to that question was the same as the correct response to “Who sang ‘Owner of a Lonely

Heart?’” - Yes.

Andora traveled to the beat of a different drum(mer) during the first show back. “When we did the first open mic, we hadn’t contacted Curt yet,” Chambers said. “We didn’t know where he was, so we had a stand-in drummer just for that open mic night. Then we decided we’re going to get hold of Curt and we’re all going to get together.”

Andora members met at Chambers’ house to review music, brainstorm, and play some tunes. Ruhl didn’t have his drum set with him, so he used baby toys as shakers to keep rhythm.

Sharpe said the band members agreed they would go back to their (grass) roots. They concluded, “Let’s live for today, but play music from our youth. “We wanted the band to be nothing but the ’70s, what we experienced in our high school days,” Sharpe said. “We did incorporate a few of the songs that we played back then, but we wanted to be nothing solely but ’70s classic rock, because that was basically what we listened to during our teenage years. We’ve stuck to that, and our followers know when they come, they’re going to take a trip down memory lane and they’re going to hear ’70s classic rock. We try to give them all the songs that are sing along and danceable. You know the lyrics; you can dance to it. You’re going to have a good

Postcard Club Sets Meeting

The Lancaster County Postcard Club will hold a meeting at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The program for the afternoon will be “Mohnton and Shillington in Berks County,”

presented by club member Kerry Mohn. The postcard competition will be “Advertising.”

The meeting is open to the public. For more information, call 717-413-6882 or follow “Lancaster County Postcard Club” on Facebook.

Women’s Group To Meet

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Oct. 21, from 9 to 10:45 am.

Carol Cool will speak on “Being the Friend I Need.” She will discuss how to find friendships and how to become the friend others need. Carol’s presentation will focus on the life of Jesus and how to create lasting, meaningful relationships.

Carol is the author of “Finding Balance in the Circus of Life” and lives in Bally with her husband, Les. She enjoys encouraging others to discover who they were created to be and to find balance by living authentically and joyfully. She is a lover of Panera

time. Granted, our key audience is 50-plus. But I think classic rock spans the generations.”

Richards added, “It’s been said of the band that we are like a time machine.”

Some of their equipment remains from the first iteration. Chambers still plays the same 1970 Gibson SG guitar he was gifted by his dad at the age of 14.

Ruhl’s father helped him purchase a new set Ludwig blue Vistalite drums. He sold them after the group disbanded. “I wanted to get another set of Vistalites to go back in time, like we did, with our performances. I finally found another set (in Pittsburgh), and that’s what we use today. They’re getting hard to find. That means a lot to me, those drums.”

Andora has monthly shows planned into the spring. “We try to limit it to one performance a month for three reasons,” Sharpe said. “One, we hope we can remember enough music to play

one performance a month. Two, can our knees take the loading and the unloading for more than one performance a month? There’s a lot of gear that we move in and out, even at our age, and that’s the other one, our age. If the gig goes past 9:30 (p.m.), we all get sleepy.” Andora will play Friday, Oct. 17, from 8 to 10:30 p.m. at Red Pin Bar & Grill, 1495 Millport Road, Lancaster; Friday, Nov. 21, from 8 p.m. to midnight at Riverside Camping Association, 730 E. Strawberry St., Lancaster; Friday, Jan. 23, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Elizabethtown Moose Lodge, 126 Maytown Road; Friday, Feb. 6, from 8 to 11 p.m. at Ephrata Amvets, 614 S. State St.; Friday, March 20, from 7 to 10 p.m. at New Holland American Legion, 35 S. Hoover Ave.; and Saturday, April 18, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Christiana American Legion, 219 Newport Ave.

Visit the group’s Facebook page, “Andora,” for additional information.

be totally trained,” said Lauren Miller, a Manheim Township resident who is the executive director of LCSA. “We saw that the teachers were working their tails off, so there was this disconnect. We needed to be aligned. We didn’t want our talent to grow here and then leave because they didn’t think there were career opportunities here. The business world is changing so much and so quickly that we still need to have these tricky conversations.”

Headquartered at 23 E. King St., Lancaster, LCSA is a consortium dedicated to helping Lancaster County students to become workforce ready by the time they graduate from high school. The organization’s 25-member advisory board meets four times each year to brainstorm, analyze data, set goals and implement policies.

“To collectively impact, that’s been the whole purpose of why we exist,” said Miller. “No one person can solve our workforce challenges. That’s where the power happens. We say, ‘Join the movement.’ No one organization has all the resources or all the answers. We have to be leveraging each other’s strengths.”

Each September LCSA conducts its Workforce 2030 Summit, an annual conference designed to make Lancaster County a workready community by 2030. This

year, more than 250 educators, business leaders, representatives of nonprofits and community partners attended.

LCSA also engages in grant-giving, programs, projects and learning platforms like apprenticeships, internships, job shadowing, company tours and mentoring.

“To me, the term STEM is all about creative thinking, problem-solving and all the things that make you successful in the workplace,” said Miller. “It’s the Lancaster County STEM Alliance’s belief that all Lancaster County students should be graduating with basic STEM skills. STEM jobs pay well, and the demand for them is growing.”

LCSA is a collaborative network of dozens of local organizations similar to the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 and the United Way of Lancaster County. LCSA also works closely with the county’s 16 public school districts and 15 non-public schools located in Lancaster County.

“We’re hyper-focused on Lancaster County,” said Miller. “I think the people who are involved with the Lancaster County STEM Alliance are civically minded community leaders who are committed to Lancaster County residents having life-sustaining wages. They want to make Lancaster better. They’re

willing to invest their capital and resources to ensure people have jobs that are meaningful.”

In 2024, 23,000 individuals participated in LCSA programs.

“We’ve always needed essential life skills,” said Miller. “But work has become more technology driven. The world of work is no longer fac tory based, and work has required us to do more thinking. Jobs look very different today.”

Miller and foundation program coordinator Andrew Garner make up LCSA’s two-employee staff, but the organization relies heavily on the contributions of numerous volunteers. LCSA’s work is almost entirely funded through the Stein man Foundation, whose mission is to ensure quality of life for all the citizens of Lancaster County.

“We have a committed group of people who are trying to prepare the workforce of tomorrow,” said Miller. “It’s not just the sole responsibility of parents or educators to prepare the new generation for work. We all play a critical role in a student’s education. We really need the community to open doors to the education system.”

LCSA was established in 2015. A year later, the organization was recognized nationally as a STEM ecosystem.

“I think a large majority of the community doesn’t even know we exist,” said Miller. “But we have definitely grown quite a bit over the last three years. We’re only as strong as the network of people who are supporting us. There are a lot of ways to get involved in the Lancaster County STEM Alliance.”

Harvest Fest

get people inside our building,” said Jones. “Our main purpose is to give back to Lititz and surrounding communities. Our kids are required to be out in their community and serving. That’s a huge component of our students’ time at Lititz Christian.”

The Harvest Fest will feature face painting, bounce houses, games, balloon animals, barrel rides, photo opportunities, a dunk tank, touch-a-truck and a firepit for creating s’mores, as well as foods like chicken barbecue, hot dogs, hamburgers, funnel cakes, soft pretzels, beverages and coffee.

Donations to the school will also be accepted.

Lititz and surrounding areas are expected to attend.

“I think the Lancaster County area knows about us,” said Jones. “There are a million schools in the county. I think Lititz Christian is widely known in our area. We care about families. We care about kids and their education. That’s the biggest piece for us.”

“There are tons of great biblical schools in Lancaster County,” Jones added. “One of the things that Lititz Christian embraces is students’ individuality. When we have students coming here, we want them to be seen and known and do what they’re good at.”

200 children enrolled in LCS’ two early learning centers.

LCS, which is funded through tuition, grants and donations, employs approximately 90 workers, about 60 of whom are teachers.

“It’s families who are enjoying a biblically focused, small-town education,” said Jones. “Our team focuses on our kids’ strengths and weaknesses, and we’re trying to come alongside them. They’re families enjoying something a little different than a homeschool

or a public school education.”

LCS, which was founded in 1978, opened its second early learning center at Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, in September. LCS’ original early learning center is located at 29 Acre Road, Lititz.

“The church was looking for a school to come in,” said Jones of the new location. “We didn’t really have to do anything except bring some supplies.”
