At Invitational, Hospitable Warwick Will Play Gracious Host

When improvement is the goal, the next performance is always the most important one. For the Warwick marching band, this pursuit of excellence is both a journey and a destination.

That’s the real significance of the Warwick band’s upcoming home show, The Legend of the Warrior Invitational.

“I’m sure (the student members) would love to win the highest honor,” said Aimee Taylor, vice president of the Warwick Band Parent Organization (WBPO) and the chairperson of the home show committee. “But I know they’d be happy to beat their previous week’s score. For the kids, they enjoy making memories hanging out all day together. I don’t know if it puts more pressure on them or not.”

Song, dance, cuisine, accessories, culture. What’s not to like?

Not only does the One World Festival bring people out, the event brings people together.

“Personally, I think people are more similar than they are different,” said Deepa Balepur, the chairperson of the nine-member One World Festival committee.

“At the end of the day, we’re all human beings striving to be good citizens of the world. One world, many cultures, shared future.”

Not unlike beauty, art is in the eye of the beholder.

Art is what you make of it. Art is where you find it. Art moves us all, each in our own unique way. Interpretation will abound at the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Arts Show.

Rotary Fall Festival Will Deliver Family Fun

“The Rotary Fall Festival is a great opportunity for families to enjoy outdoor fun and learn more about the important organizations that help support the Lancaster community,” said Bill Weik, treasurer of the Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise. “They can see firsthand the positive results from organizations working together.”

The festival will be held on Sunday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Aberdeen Acres, 495 Mark Drive, Elizabethtown.

The Uptown Band will provide live music from noon to 6 p.m. A kids’ area and mechanical bull riding will be offered during the festival.

“The Kids Zone is a combination of items from Big Bright Bounces in Elizabethtown - bounce house and 90-foot obstacle course,” Weik shared. “There will also be pony rides for the kids.”

Hachet and ax throwing will be featured from noon to 5 p.m., and members of the Millersville University equestrian club will be on-site to provide riding demonstrations at 3 p.m.

A silent auction will run from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the event will feature a live auction portion beginning at 4:30 p.m.

“We will have a food truck all day, and kids’ and adult beverages are provided by Altana,” Weik said. “Lori’s Lattes will also be on-site.”

This is the club’s sixth fall festival, he noted, explaining that the event began during the pandemic after the club lost its two major fundraisers at the time due to the shutdown. Since people were permitted to hold outdoor

gatherings, the club members pivoted and held a festival the first Saturday in October during the Preakness Stakes.

“We did well and continued it forward,” he noted.

The festival will be held rain or shine, and people are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

Along with offering a fun day for families, the fall festival is also a fundraiser for an organization supported by the Rotary Club.

“Forty thousand dollars of the proceeds will support the Lancaster County Food Hub’s new Outreach Center,” said Beth Mack, fall festival chair and board member of the Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise, directing people to learn more about the project at www.lancasterfoodhub.org. “Proceeds will also support student scholarships, local community grants and international projects.”

Volunteers from the Wittel Farm, which is located directly behind Aberdeen Acres, will be on-site at the festival, sharing how their crops support the Lancaster County Food Hub and encouraging guests to consider volunteering.

Weik said that since the first fall festival, the club has provided more than $257,000 in support of local initiatives.

“Some of the larger items supported a hot/cold transport van for Meals on Wheels Lancaster; a van for Off The Streets Lancaster to support getting the homeless into permanent housing; equipment to fully furnish the Bench Mark Program’s Women’s Strength and Fitness Center; literacy projects for Manheim Township School Dis -

Singers Sought for “Messiah” Performance

St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, will host two performances of Handel’s “Messiah” on Sunday, Dec. 14, and community members are invited to join the chorus.

Singers will have the opportunity to perform part one of “Messiah” and additional choruses with professional soloists and a full orchestra. People of all ages, from high school to senior adults, are welcome to participate. No auditions or prior knowledge of the music are required, but singers should be able to read music.

Rehearsals will be held at St. Peter’s on Thursdays

trict; and other small projects to support Girls on the Run, Anchor Lancaster, Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning, Power Packs, KPETS, Arch Street Center, Second Grace in Mount Joy and others.”

He shared that the club also supports projects outside of the local area as well as outside of the country.

“Most notable is our continued support annually to the Budapest Rotary Club - they have been instrumental in assisting with the various needs with Ukraine - as well as Amigos De Honduras, where we have been providing financial support with building schools and clean water initiatives,” he said. “We have a member who goes there annually to support these efforts.”

Weik encourages everyone to come out to the festival for fall fun.

“It’s a great family day for family fun! If they want to be outdoors, relaxed, listen to a great band and have activities all day for kids and adults, they will want to be here,” he said. “There are many live and

silent auction items. For example, we have tickets to the Washington Commanders vs. Philadelphia Eagles game, several tickets to Penn State football games, vacations and more. Plus, all the proceeds support a great cause!” Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise meets on Thursdays at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz.

“We are a breakfast club, so the morning starts bright and early at 7 a.m.,” said Weik, who lives in Elizabethtown. “Our club is open to members all over the county who share the passion of Service Above Self.” To learn more about the club, visit www.lancastersun riserotaryofpa.com.

Local Man Seeks Kidney Donor

Douglas Seaman, who was diagnosed with kidney disease in August of 2020, is seeking a kidney donor. Seaman, age 62, is a life-long resident of East Hanover Township in Dauphin County.

Seaman is currently on the transplant list at UPMC Harrisburg. However, due to the number of people on the trans -

plant list at this time, it may take five or more years to obtain a kidney for transplant. Seaman noted that healthy adults may donate one of their kidneys and still have a long life.

For more information about becoming a kidney donor, call UPMC Harrisburg at 717-2318757. Contact Seaman directly on his Facebook page.

Landis Woods

it takes all kinds,” said Alex Van Pelt, who’s been the environmental education program manager for the Manheim Township Recreation and Parks Planning (MTRPP) department for eight years. “Everybody sees different value in different works. That’s the beauty of the show.”

MTRPP’s 27th annual Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Arts Show will be presented from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Landis Woods Park, 2369 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. The rain-or-shine event is free to attend, and free parking will be available at Neffsville Mennonite Church, 2371 Lititz Pike, Lancaster.

“The art show is a unique event because it’s entirely outdoors,” said Van Pelt. “It’s an art show set in nature. There will be centrally located music that you can hear throughout the park. The artists’ tents are spread out, and there’s a nice outdoors feel to it. It’s just a nice day in the park.”

The Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Arts Show will feature the works of 25 mostly Lancaster County artists in mediums like watercolor, oil, acrylics, sketching, woodworking and metalworking. The artists will offer some of their works for sale.

Several cash prizes will be awarded to the pieces of art, including best of show.

“A lot of these artists have studios,” said Van Pelt, “and for a majority of them, it’s their living.

It’s not a hobby.”

“For me personally, I like the wood working booth,” continued Van Pelt. “A lot of the artists are actively working throughout the show. It’s enjoyable to me to watch someone make something out of a piece of wood.”

The art show’s vibe will be supplemented by music and hot and cold food items made available by the Neffsville Mennonite Church youth group. But the artistic atmosphere will be inspired by trees, nature and early fall weather.

“It’s very laid back,” said Van Pelt. “You have visitors of all ages, and some people like watching the bands all day. It’s well attended. It’s a nice outing for residents.”

The Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Arts Show will present audio art from Stone Soup String Band from 9 to 10:30 a.m., Jim Sorrentino Jazz Band from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Lancaster County Folk Music and Fiddle Society from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and the Steve Barth Band from 2:15 to 3:45 p.m.

“Lancaster is an interesting area, and there are a lot of art shows here,” said Van Pelt. “(The Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Arts Show is) an opportunity to see a lot of different artists, and this one is held in the woods, which is one of the most unique settings for an art show in Lancaster County.”

The outdoor fine arts show was established in 1999 through

the efforts of former Manheim Township supervisor and art lover Roy Baldwin. Since its inception, the show has gained popularity by capturing the imaginations of local residents.

“(The show) has had a pretty decent history in Lancaster,” said Van Pelt. “There have certainly been ebbs and flows. But the community has varying interests in art. It’s always been a little different.”

In addition to the art show, MTRPP also sponsors a pair of Halloween carnivals near the end of October, a holiday open house in early December, a groundhog’s day celebration in early February, a community egg hunt in April and now an Earth Day festival near the end of April.

“Over the last five or 10 years, the rec department has put more energy into community events,” said Van Pelt. “We’re just trying to have as many events and programs

Highland Preforming Arts presents STEVEN COURTNEY

Welcoming Families and Children of all ages to this FREE concert

Sunday October 5 3:00 PM Highland Presbyterian Church 500 E. Roseville Rd. Lancaster

“We might have different customs and flavors, but we are all living in this one world,” said Jenny Schulder Brant, a member of the One World Festival committee. “We do need to interact, and we have to find that common thread that unites us. We have people from all over the world living in this community. We all send our kids to school together. It’s nice to be able to celebrate that.”

This year’s One World Festival will feature 12 musical/dance performing groups, including ones from the Indian, Latin-American, Irish, Greek, Middle Eastern, traditional German and Jewish communities. On the average, each performance will last about 20 minutes.

Also featured will be seven food vendors offering Asian, Indian, Latin, Egyptian, Italian and Greek cuisine and one offering international desserts. In addition, the festival will include a dozen global merchandise vendors.

The family-friendly event will also include a kids’ area complete with arts and crafts, activities, face painting, balloon animals and caricature drawing.

“There’s a lot of energy,” said Kris Bradley, One World Festival’s marketing director. “From the first (musical) performance it’s amazing, and then it’s just one after the other. You’ve got to go just to see the performances.”

“It’s very festive,” said Balepur. “It’s just a great time for everyone. To see Lancaster County come together, it’s uplifting.”

More than 4,000 local residents are expected to attend from com-

“They are people who are looking to have fun and have a family experience that’s also educational,” said Schulder Brant. “It’s amazing being part of a community of like-minded people who are looking to understand people who are ‘different’ than them. Everyone in that room is choosing to be there with an open mind.”

“They are people who are genuinely interested in learning about different cultures,” said Balepur. “We have observed that, and there is a lot of genuine conversation. Last year, someone told me, ‘This is as close as I’ll get to visiting these countries.’”

Following periods of discussion and planning, the One World Festival was established in 2022. The concept was met with initial enthusiasm, and the event has just kept gaining momentum since.

“It started off with a bang and a couple of thousand attendees, and it’s stayed like that,” said Balepur. “We’re really receptive to community feedback. We heard the community when they said, ‘We had a great time, but why not try …’ When we all come together, share our traditions and learn from each other, we build a stronger community for all of us. That’s what makes Lancaster County such a special place.”

“I think the core values are really very similar,” said Schulder Brant. “They’re people who want the best for their families, like they want the best for their communities. It’s people who are taking care of their families and being part of a great event. There are similarities in our humanities, but everybody’s different, and seeing those differences is a positive thing.”

The 48th annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center and Fairgrounds, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26 and 27, beginning at 9 a.m.

The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided nearly $20 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims and support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding efforts from disasters such as earthquakes in Haiti and tornadoes and floods in Pennsylvania.

Separate auctions will include a main auction, a children’s auction, a quilt auction, a theme basket auction, two silent auctions, a heifer auction, a coin auction, a sporting goods

Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A children’s store will offer quality used items at reasonable prices, as well as face painting. A balloon artist will create balloon animals for the children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides and pony rides, the latter of which will be offered for a nominal donation.

Food options will include Amish soft pretzels and doughnuts, a cafeteria, a buffet breakfast, chicken potpie, chicken barbecue, and a food stand. Other auction activities will include an area for arts and crafts and a farmers market with fresh produce and baked goods, including homemade pies.

To find out more about the auction, visit www.brethrenauction .org, call 717-823-2745, or pick up an auction booklet at many local retailers.

Warwick Band

and WBPO will present The Legend of the Warrior Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the high school’s Grosh Stadium, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz. Gates will open at 11 a.m., and the preliminary performances will kick off at noon.

There are fees associated with admission to the invitational.

“It’s a big deal,” said Taylor. “The purpose is to give students a chance to perform, compete and improve. It’s a challenge for them. It continues a long tradition of hosting a band competition at Warwick.”

Warwick will be one of 16 high school marching bands from Lancaster County and central Pennsylvania competing that day. All 16 bands will perform during the afternoon session, and the top eight units - based on the quality of their music, visuals and overall effects as judged by a panel of 10 adjudicators - will advance to the evening’s final round of competition.

The top performances will be recognized with prizes and awards.

The Warwick marching band’s 2025 field show is titled “A Night in the Cathedral.”

“Overall, it’s a vibe of excitement,” said Taylor. “Everyone is outside and excited to be there. The students like to watch the other bands perform.”

The stadium’s concession stand will be open, there will be food trucks on-site offering hot and cold food and the band parents will also be conducting a bake sale. While the invitational is a true competition, all the visiting bands are made to feel welcomed and comfortable.

“I think we have a reputation for hosing a really nice event,” said Taylor. “So, every year we get asked to do it again. To see it all come together is great to see. On the day of, it’s an all-hands-ondeck approach. It’s a lot of work. But when it all comes together, it feels good.”

The Legend of the Warrior Invitational represents one of 17 performances that the Warwick marching band will stage this fall. The invitational is the only competition that Warwick hosts.

“In my opinion, the (Cavalcade of Bands) Championships at the end of the season is the most important event,” said Taylor. “The kids compete almost every weekend, they get a score and they want to improve themselves. The kids get excited when they hear their score. There are so many good bands. The competition is high quality.”

“Every week at rehearsals, (the band is) adding new elements to their show,” continued Taylor. “They’re constantly adding. I can’t say how far they’ve come (since the beginning of the season).”

The members of the Warwick marching band are student performers, and many performers relish the act of performing. Audience participation can serve as inspiration for those performers.

“We always have a cheering section at every competition,” said Taylor. “I imagine it’s inspiring to the kids. I don’t want to say how important it is to the kids, but they do have a big following, that’s for sure.”

More than 20 WBPO members will be present on the day of the invitational, a showing that can be interpreted as a sign of support.

“There’s a dedicated group of band parent volunteers,” said Taylor. “There’s a lot that goes into (the invitational); everyone has a role, and everyone steps up. There are a lot of things going on at the same time. We’re just there to support Mr. T. (band director Matthew Tenaglia), support the kids and give them whatever they need to have a successful season. We want them to concentrate on their performances and their shows.”

Attendees must be age 21 or older. Online registration will open on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 9 a.m.

A free indoor concert will be presented by Rizzetta’s Tones, a Celtic American band, on Oct. 18 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Online registration will begin on Saturday, Oct. 4.
