One reason Simon Ababou, fitness director with the Lititz recCenter, likes organizing the annual youth triathlon is because of the many benefits the activity offers the children who participate. Ababou pointed out that swimming, cycling, and running are all cardio workouts, but they each require different types of breathing. He added that children can learn from taking part in the triathlon as well. “(The triathlon) teaches patience, helps (participants learn) transitioning from one activity to another, (and helps children) learn to follow directions as they go from challenge to challenge,” said Ababou. The 12th annual youth triathlon will be held at the rec center, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, on Friday, Oct. 5, at 4:30 p.m. The triathlon is open to all area students
between the ages of 7 and 15, including those living in neighboring boroughs. Check-in time on the day of the event will be 3:30 p.m., and registration will be open until 4 p.m. Bicycle safety checks will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The event generally concludes by 6 p.m. The rain date will be Friday, Oct. 12. Children will begin the event with a swim in the indoor rec center pool, followed by bike laps in the rec center parking lot and a cross-country-style run on the grass around the building. Participants are asked to bring their bicycle, a helmet, a swimsuit, a towel, and running shoes to the event. Proper swimwear is required. Because there is little time to change between swimming and biking, participants may bring shorts to wear over their swimsuit. Each athlete will be marked with an entry number for timing purposes. Main St., Lititz, every Monday at 7 p.m. The Sept. 24 program will be “When Anxiety Strikes: Compassion, Peace, and Understanding.” The purpose is to help participants gain a greater understanding of anxiety and panic attacks and obtain practical tools for dealing with these experiences. The public is invited to the free community event. Don Fitzkee, director of development for COBYS Family Services, easily recalls the earliest days of the organization’s existence in 1980. “We began as a teen foster care agency with foster families in private homes,” said Fitzkee. During the last few years, COBYS has grown extensively in response to the drug epidemic. “You read stories in the newspaper about people affected by the opioid crisis,” said Fitzkee, “but you don’t read about the children involved.” Fitzkee noted that many of those children go into foster care. “COBYS is See COBYS pg 2
To meet the growing need in the community, COBYS Family Services purchased a building on Murry Hill Circle in Lancaster and moved a number of staff to that location. Christened the Murry Hill Center, the building is the site of monthly foster parenting orientation classes, as well as adoption and foster care services.
Simon Ababou (center), fitness director with the Lititz recCenter, and area youths are looking forward to the 12th annual youth triathlon, which will be held at the rec center on Oct. 5.
Landis Woods Art Show Planned By Ann Mead Ash
Jennifer Cavalcante is a photographer. “I (take pictures) of (wildlife), animals, and people,” explained Cavalcante, as she held a print of flowers so vividly hued the piece resembles a painting. “(This photograph) is printed on watercolor paper, and the paper makes (the colors) really pop,” she said. Cavalcante will be one of nearly 50 professional artists who will take part in the Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show that will be held rain or shine on the Boettcher House Museum grounds on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An art walk, which will feature about a dozen high school artists, will be open from noon until 3 p.m. on the day of the show. Items that artists and craftspeople will bring to sell at the show See Art Show pg 7
Artists and musicians who will be among many to participate in the 2018 Landis Woods Art Show on Sept. 29 include (from left) Paris Llanso, Jennifer Cavalcante, Stephen Gambone, Lisa Madenspacher, and John Beaumont.
