For Scouts, Camp Mack Is a Destination
BY JEFF FALK
Trustworthy and loyal, Scouts always remain true to themselves. No matter where one goes, a Scout is always a Scout.
But never is a Scout more a Scout than when she or he is camping at J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation.

“I’m sure there are some places where kids can make crafts or practice archery,” said Matt Klutzaritz, the Scout executive for the Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Scouting America, which oversees the operation of Camp Mack. “But to be able to do it all in one spot is kind of our attraction. Kids earn advancement through progression. One thing we

know about kids is that you don’t want to rain on their advancements. That keeps them in the program.
Their parents see them becoming good people. What we’re doing is building the leaders of tomorrow.
Building Bridges for Brianna Inspires Hope
BY CAT SHANNON
Matt Dorgan took heartbreak and turned it into hope and healing. On Dec. 3, 2020, his 15-year-old daughter, Brianna, died by suicide after a long struggle with mental health.
“Her passing shook us to our core,” he said, noting that close friends rallied around him but he knew he could not just simply move on. “As we shared our grief, we realized a painful truth: Every one of us had lost someone we loved to mental illness. And now, we had lost Brianna. We knew something had to change. We had to do something.”
In those first raw moments of heartbreak, the idea for a mental health festival was born, he recalled.
“We wanted to raise money, yes, but more than that, we wanted to raise awareness and build a real support network for those in crisis,” Dorgan shared. “Then came the words that changed everything: ‘We need to build the bridge.’ And just as quickly, someone shouted back, ‘For Brianna!’”
Just weeks after Brianna’s death, on Dec. 27, 2020, Building Bridges for Brianna began.

Collin Goshert is a quick study, a fast learner. The 18-year-old resident of Warwick Township thrives in a nurturing and supportive educational environment.
What Goshert has been able to accomplish in 10 short months is nothing short of amazing.
“National champion” has a certain ring to it.
“From my perspective, I didn’t think it was difficult to learn to operate,” said Goshert.
“For some, it’s more challenging. It’s not hard to learn if you have the right teachers and the right support. There’s operating and doing it proficiently; there’s a difference.”
Near the end of June, Goshert took top honors in the heavy equipment operations category at the fifth annual SkillsUSA

“Since that day, we’ve been committed to knocking down barriers to mental health care,” Dorgan explained. “When we see a wall in services, we don’t walk away. We find a way over it, around it, under it or straight through it.”
Describing his daughter, Dorgan noted that he could talk forever.

full of love for people and animals alike,” he remarked.
Born in Key West, Fla., Brianna soon demonstrated a desire to help others, Dorgan said, sharing stories of Brianna’s giving spirit.
A passionate animal lover, Brianna constantly lobbied to turn her home into a zoo, her father joked, noting that she wanted a monkey or a pig as a pet but happily settled for a pet dog, Emma, who she brought home just one week before her death.
An eighth-grader at Dallastown Area School District when she died, Brianna had a close-knit group of friends.
June of 2021. More than 1,500 people attended. Dorgan remembers open conversations about mental health and organizations completing realtime intakes and scheduling therapy sessions on the spot.
“That night, I spent nearly two hours answering emails, messages and phone calls from people thanking us for creating a space like that,” he said. “That was the moment we knew this couldn’t be just one event. It had to become a movement.”
located in Dallastown.
Dorgan, who works full time as a probation officer for the County of York in addition to running the nonprofit, emphasized the organization works hard to provide care quickly, eliminating the red tape that can cause months-long delays via traditional routes to help.
Community support is needed in a variety of ways, from donating funds to volunteering, attending events or simply being there for someone who’s struggling.

While cleaning her room after she passed, Dorgan found a simple white T-shirt with a powerful message: “Keep Fight;ing! I Believe in You You are a Star.” The semicolon and phrasing were exactly how Brianna wrote it, he said.
“That message - raw, honest and filled with hope - has become the motto of Building Bridges for Brianna,” Dorgan commented. “It speaks not just to who Brianna was, but to the mission she unknowingly helped create: to remind people that they are not alone and they are worthy of love, support and healing.”
Building Bridges for Brianna, which serves all of Pennsylvania, held its first mental health festival in
The organization soon became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and began paying for co-pays; providing coping tools; offering Question, Persuade, Refer prevention training; and speaking publicly about mental health. Still, Dorgan always believed he could do more.
In its third year, the organization received a donation that helped to open the first office, hire licensed social workers and therapists and offer free or reduced-cost mental health care. Within six months, the organization had outgrown the space.
Moving into a much larger office, the organization continued to grow.
“Since opening the new center, we’ve helped more than 400 people in our community get the mental health support they need,” Dorgan said of the headquarters

Lancaster Printers Fair Will Be Held Sept. 20
20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike.
The organization’s signature event, the Bridge Building Festival, is held every September in honor of Suicide Prevention Month. This year’s festival will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Dallastown Community Park, 50 S. School Place.
“What started in 2021 with 35 vendors and 1,500 attendees has grown into a vibrant, community-powered event with over 100 vendors and more than 5,000 attendees,” Dorgan said. “The festival includes music, food trucks, local vendors, mental health organizations and a powerful sense of shared purpose.”
Also every September, the organization leads a Purple Light Campaign to raise awareness of suicide prevention, encouraging people to change their outdoor lights to purple ones to reflect one of the movement’s official colors.

Although the festival is the organization’s biggest event, Dorgan emphasized that the nonprofit works year-round to promote positive mental health.
“Mental health isn’t a one-time conversation. It’s an everyday commitment. And we’re here, year-round, building the bridge between pain and healing, isolation and community, hopelessness and hope,” Dorgan said. “Brianna’s legacy is the bridge we’re building: one that connects people to the help, hope and healing they deserve.”

Championships in Atlanta, Ga.
Goshert scored 866.5 out of a possible 1,000 points in 22 judged competitions over two days to best 24 other high school students from 18 states.
Goshert had qualified for the SkillsUSA Championships with a first-place showing at the Heavy Equipment Pennsylvania Skills Competition near Shippensburg on April 2 and 3.
Goshert is currently employed full time as an operator assistant at B.R. Kreider & Son, a paving and excavating contractor located at 63 Kreider Lane, Manheim.
“On that Friday night, (SkillsUSA Championships officials) had an awards ceremony at State Farm Arena,” said Goshert, a 2025 graduate of Warwick High School. “I was like, ‘Well, I made it to nationals anyway.’ They took us backstage, and when they brought us out on stage, they announced the thirdplace finisher, the second-place finisher and then finally the winner. I didn’t know I won until then, so that was pretty nerve-racking.”
“I was pretty happy with how I did,” continued Goshert. “There were a couple of tasks I knew I
didn’t do so well, and there were others where I was pleasantly surprised. I couldn’t have done much better than first place.”
At the national event in Atlanta, the competition tested both operating skills proficiency and the knowledge of heavy equipment through written evaluations.
“Heavy equipment is just really big toys that have built the world we live in,” said Goshert. “There’s no one way to operate it. It’s about the instructor showing you how to do it. It’s about how you learn and how you practice it. There’s a lot of hand-eye coordination that goes into it. Some of it is knowing what you’re going to be doing with that machine.”
Goshert spent his entire senior year of high school at the Brownstown Campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, 231 Snyder Road, Ephrata. Before enrolling in instructor Justin Findley’s class, Goshert had little experience with heavy equipment operations.
“Surprisingly, I had no prior experience,” said Goshert. “Maybe a little with a John Deere riding mower, but nothing as big as I got to run in class or at work.”
“From his first time operating a wheel loader to becoming not only a state champion, but a national champion, Collin showed his determination to be the best that he could,” said Findley. “His hard work has paid off, and as his instructor, I’m very proud of him and his accomplishments.”
Over a period of two months before the competitions, Goshert received some formal instruction from Findley and B.R. Kreider trainers Lawrence Hershey and Heath Kreiser to prepare himself for the event. But when the chips were down, he leaned on the overall skills that he had been developing since last fall.
“I think (the success was a result of) a couple of different things,” said Goshert. “I think having a lot of general knowledge helped. My teacher at CTC (Findley) helped me a ton. I wasn’t into this stuff before I took his class. That helped. Everyone I work with on a daily basis helped me, and our two trainers (Hershey and Kreiser) showed me how to operate equipment. I think it’s better to learn by watching.”

HUNTING & FISHING DAY
Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 11 A.M. - 5 P.M.

Camp Mack
We’re building good people, we’re building good parents and we’re building good employees.”
Located at 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown, in Elizabeth Township, on the border between Lancaster County and Lebanon County, J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation is 1,100 Furnace Hill acres of trees, wildlife, nature and the great outdoors. The facility includes a lake, a pool, 25 miles of hiking trails, a shooting range, a dining hall, 11 camp sites for tenting under the stars and five cabins.
“The kids love the pool, especially in the middle of the summer,” said Klutzaritz. “If you asked five kids what their favorite thing about Camp Mack is, at least three of them are going to give you different answers. In Lancaster County and Lebanon County, we have natural resources. But kids who live in towns and cities don’t get a chance to do this stuff; they don’t
get a chance to be in the woods.”
Among the favorite activities at Camp Mack are fishing, boating, swimming, archery, BB-gun shooting, crafts, human foosball, bike riding, pedal cars and campfires. There are no televisions at Camp Mack, and the cell phone reception is spotty at best, but the facility does offer Wi-Fi.
J. Edward Mack is open yearround but mostly visited during the warmer months.
“Throughout the year, things are happening there,” said Klutzaritz, a resident of West Hempfield Township. “Primarily, the use of that property is for our Cub Scouts. Some of the Cub Scouts are camping for the first time.”
At the height of the summer, as many as 250 Cub Scouts - boys and girls from kindergarten to fifth grade - frequent Camp Mack each week. Overall, thousands of people visit Camp Mack each year,

available for sale and supplies that we’re selling out of our overages,” said Kulakowsky. “We got a lot of donations, and after we get doubles and triples and so forth, we try to get it into the hands of hobby printers who would like to continue on with the printing process.”
Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the craft. “If they have if they want to find out what print making and letterpress printing is about, this is the place they should go,” Kulakowsky said. “There are multiple approaches of the same process. And you always say it’s not your grandfather’s printing press anymore. The stuff that people are doing now with printing, it’s not commercial printing. It’s more all art and hobby printing

including Boy Scout troops and other groups from all over Lancaster County and Lebanon County and as far away as Harrisburg and Allentown.
The J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation is the only Scouting America camp in Lancaster County and one of only a handful in the central Pennsylvania region.
“These young people are boys and girls,” said Klutzaritz. “They’re simply youth who have decided Scouting has a program they want to participate in. They’re learning some skills they don’t even realize they’re learning. They’re learning through fun activities.”
The J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation was established in 1969 through a donation by Lancaster County businessman J. Edward Mack, himself a former Eagle Scout. It has been estimated that Camp Mack has impacted nearly 200,000 young lives in a
wholesome manner during its existence.
“I want people to know we’re here,” said Klutzaritz. “When I talk to people about Scouting, if they know about it, they have a very high opinion of Scouting. But there are a lot of people who can’t tell you anything about Scouting.”
The Pennsylvania Dutch Council, which is headquartered at 630 Janet Ave., Lancaster, is one of 248 Scouting America councils in the United States. The local chapter serves over 2,000 youths from Lancaster County and Lebanon County.
“Scouting helps young people become productive and valued members of society,” said Klutzaritz. “Scouting teaches you how to be a well-rounded person. Scouting teaches you things that schools can’t.”

and very specialized printing that’s being done by individuals. And the commercial aspect of it has long gone for letterpress printing. But as far as the printing of personalized items and specialty items, it’s still very viable.”
The Printers Fair is the group’s major fundraising project. “It used to help us fund the Letterpress Printing Center (on the campus of Thaddeus Stevens College), which was closed down in 2023,” Kulakowsky said. “We’re still trying to find a new location and not having much luck right now. That’s why we’re trying to raise more money so we can have money to reopen it. It was all hands-on activities for school kids.”
The .918 Club previously hosted Scouts and school groups at the Letterpress Printing Center. “They wanted to know about the history, and we do the history of communications,” Kulakowsky said. “If you have a group that’s studying this the Civil War and you want to know how communications and printing was done in the Civil War, we can show them, and we used to be able to have them actually set up type and print.” The museum located at 346 N. Queen St., Lancaster, is now big enough to do that.
The .918 Club’s name is derived from the way printing was done. “The letters are put together one at a time to form words and sentences,” Kulakowsky said. “Even though there are different sizes, they have one size that’s the same for both pieces, and that’s the height, which is 0.918 of an inch. So anything you have to use for printing, all the presses are set up that all the type is
0.918 of an inch high.”
Sept. 18 (9/18) is National Letterpress Appreciation Day, so the fair is always held on the Saturday closest to that date, Kulakowsky explained.
The .918 Club meets the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at The Studios in The Candy Factory, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, which is in the same complex as the museum.
Everyone is welcome, and the .918 Club is always seeking vol -
unteers. “We’re looking for people who want to help here in the museum,” said Kulakowsky. We go through a couple orientations. We don’t put them out by themselves, naturally. We will mentor them for a while to see until they feel comfortable about running the museum.”
The museum is staffed by volunteers from noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays and on First Friday nights.

Volunteers invite
to Susquehanna Old Fashioned Field Days.
Each year, the Old Fashioned Field Days spotlight themed antique and collectible items.
“We’re featuring Sears and Roebuck home and garden items and soda advertising and collectibles,” said Ron Bernhard, a member of the event committee.
Both days will also feature opportunities to explore hit and miss gas engines and antique tractors and see a wide variety of demonstrations.
“We’ll have a blacksmith, someone pressing apple cider, shelling corn demonstrations,” he noted, adding that war re-enactors will also be on-site. A variety of craft vendors will also be featured.
Lots of activities will be offered for children as well, said Tonya Bernhard, a member of the organizing committee.
“We have barrel train rides for the kids,” she said. “We have a pumpkin patch they can ride a wagon to and pick out a pumpkin, one pumpkin per person. There is a kids’ zone run by Word of Life Church with games for kids to play, and that’s all free.”
Food and music will also be featured.
“All of our food is from civic organizations and local churches,” Tonya said, noting that the entire event is sponsored by the Conoy Lions Club.
Summit Hill will provide live music on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
At 3 p.m. on Saturday, a benefit auction will be held, with proceeds used to fund future field days.
“You never know what you’re going to find at the auction,” Tonya shared. “It’s donated goods, so we don’t know what’s going to be there until a few days before it happens.”
For the church service on Sunday morning, all of the churches in Conoy Township come together to worship, Ron said, highlighting the community aspect of the field days.

PLACE AN AD
Both Ron and Tonya have been helping to organize the event for decades, and they look forward to it every year. They are joined by a committee of volunteers that includes their son, Mitchell, along with Kevin and Sandy Baker.
The overall atmosphere of the Old Fashioned Field Days is relaxing and inviting, Tonya said, and people are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets and spend the day, or both days, at the event.
“There’s something for everyone, and there is so much to see and do,” she said. “People who have no interest in gas engines and tractors will still be there all day. There’s lot of things for kids to do.”
The festival draws thousands of people each year, many of whom have been coming since they were children and now attend with their own kids.
“A lot of people come for both days,” Ron said. “It’s just a good,
