Warwick Marching Band Is Open to Interpretation

Every band is different. Each band goes about its business differently. Each band is composed differently. Each band performs differently. Confident. Precise. Creative. The Warwick marching band possesses its own unique style.

“We approach it with the mindset that kids can embrace their passion and grow as people,” said Matt Tenaglia, who’s been the director of the Warwick marching band for nine years. “It’s important for these kids to hear feedback. It’s important for these kids to be able to respond to criticism. We want them to give their best as much as possible. We say, ‘Be great.’ That looks different for everybody.”

The Warwick marching band’s 17-performance season is well underway. The Warriors opened their year with a performance at the football team’s season-opening home game against Avon Grove on

The world would be a pretty dull place if we were all alike, if we all did the same things and if we all thought the same way.

Lancaster Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (Lancaster AAPI) promotes diversity and celebrates all the things that make us different. But the social group also salutes the things we have in common.

In the process of acceptance, understanding and familiarity are essential early steps.

“That’s what it’s all about, finding people with whom we have things in common,” said Cindy Lam Guo, president and one of the founding members of Lancaster AAPI. “If you don’t have that sense of belonging, it’s not home. I don’t want my kids to feel like they’re different. That sense of connection is what Lancaster AAPI is all about.”

Thrifty means inexpensive, economical and frugal. It means the same things at Matthew 25 Thrift Shop, but in a different way, on a different level.

Matthew 25 Thrift Shop deals in spiritual and altruistic bargains.

“Before I came here, I had no idea how many charities there are in Lancaster County,” said Connie Shertzer, who’s been the general manager of Matthew 25 Thrift Shop for 12 years. “I never knew Lancaster County was so involved with so many things. It’s important to help because there are so many people in need. It’s part of

Lancaster AAPI is civically minded and advocates for inclusivity, but the group does not conduct regular formal meetings in an office or a brick-and-mortar building. Instead, the organization hosts four seasonal potluck meals each year - “breaking rice together” - and partners with similar nonprofits to advocate for the group’s interests through a handful of events held in various locations around Lancaster County, including Manheim Township and the city of Lancaster.

On Feb. 2, more than 3,000 individuals attended Lancaster AAPI’s Lunar New Year celebration at Ewell Plaza and Binns Park in the city.

Lancaster AAPI also sponsors

Aug. 22 and a show at the Cedar Crest Cavalcade of Bands on Sept. 6. The band will perform at
the United States Band Show at Hempfield on Saturday, Sept. 13. In addition to shows at all of

“Part of us is a social group, but we do advocate for our community,” said Lam Guo, a resident of Manheim Township. “If there’s something we want to advocate for, we show up. But we never push anything on people. Within the Asian community, there are also different people.”

“It’s really a safe space,” she continued. “Our mission is to celebrate, connect, bring us together and let people know we have a voice. We want to educate people and let people know who we are. It’s fun for us to all come together. But at the end of the day, we’re a minority group.”

Through steady growth since its founding, Lancaster AAPI’s membership now numbers 300 Lancaster County residents. Many of the members are second- or third-generation citizens who live in Lancaster County communities like the city and Manheim Township.

“In the Asian culture, there are a lot of traditions

we value,” said Lam Guo. “We come from immigrant families. Our grandparents worked hard and tried to pave a way for us. We take part of that and try to make a way for future generations. We try to piece two worlds together. I think the biggest difference (between the two worlds) is that we don’t take a lot of things for granted. Things weren’t given to our grandparents. They came here with nothing. We recognize how hard we have to work for the things we get because we saw how hard they had to work. That’s what binds us.”

It is estimated that the Asian American and Pacific Islander population in Lancaster County currently numbers more than 14,000 residents, or about

2.6% of the locale’s total population.

“On every corner and on every block and at every traffic light across Lancaster County, there is an Asianowned business,” said Lam Guo. “Some people aren’t as open-minded because it’s unfamiliar. But the Asian American community will continue to drive commerce in the county. There have been so many other contributions made. If you never take the time to learn about it, you’ll never know what’s beautiful about it. If (people) can understand it, there will be more appreciation for it. We need to start developing appreciations for other cultures, and not just the Asian culture.”

Lancaster AAPI was established in 2023.

“COVID was a really

tough time for a lot of Asian Americans, and (Lancaster AAPI) was a safe space to come together,” said Lam Guo. “If we’re all separated, how do people know we have a voice? It has grown so much. Every single time we get together, it feels like there’s new people. When they join Lancaster AAPI, it feels like they’re home again.”

“We are here, and we are building a community,” Lam Guo continued. “We’ve extended our arms to welcome other communities, and we hope everyone will welcome us because this is our home as well. We hope everyone will take the time to see us, hear us and value us.”

Anniversary Worship Service at Old Zion Church

Old Zion German Reformed Church, 187 Reifsnyder Road, Lititz (Brickerville), will host its annual anniversary service on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 3 p.m. The service provides an opportunity to reflect on Old Zion’s rich history and faith traditions.

This year’s theme will be “Brickerville 1813,” as well as topics of interest to area residents and the German Reformed Church when the current church building was constructed and initially used in the fall of 1813.

The Rev. William LaSalle will portray the Rev. John Theobald Faber Jr., who served as the minister at Old Zion from 1807 to 1819 and at other local churches. Michael Weber will portray Deacon Hollinger, a lay leader at Old Zion.

The worship service will include music and hymns from the period and will

feature the choir from Bethany United Church of Christ in Ephrata. For many years, the pastor at Old Zion also served as pastor at Bethany in Ephrata, Jerusalem Church in Penryn and other local churches.

J.P. Welliver, director of music at St. Paul Lutheran

Church, Penryn, will play the historical pump organ at Old Zion as part of the service. A freewill offering will be collected during the service.

Refreshments will be served outdoors after the service. Visit www.old zionchurch.org for more information.

Discussion Group

To Meet

The Exploring, Growing Together Discussion Forum will meet on Thursdays, Sept. 11 and 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the conference room at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. This date is a change from the group’s normal schedule due to a library event and a new time from previous meetings.

Led by Judi Larkin, the group will discuss “Quiet” by Susan Cain. “Quiet,” a No. 1 New York Times bestseller, started the Quiet Movement that champions the strengths of introverts. In “Quiet,” Cain argues that people undervalue introverts and will present stories of real people who

are successful introverts. Attendees may bring a lunch to eat during the discussion, if desired. The forum discussion series aims to offer a safe learning environment in which to discuss and explore diverse topics and beliefs with respect to everyone sharing. Each person obtains materials for the course unless specified otherwise in the information provided on the yearly schedule. The schedule is subject to change.

Contact Linda at 717626-0745 or raven303@ ptd.net with questions or suggestions, to obtain a series schedule, or to indicate intent to attend.

Nazareth High School’s Cavalcade of Bands Show at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18; at Manheim Central’s Cavalcade of Bands at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25; and at the Cavalcade of Bands Championship on Saturday, Nov. 1.

“We like to get out early in the season and get feedback,” said Tenaglia. “Then we start to apply it. The big one is our home show (on Oct. 4), and then we have the final push to our championships. You’ve just got to make your best product ever.”

This year’s version of the Warwick marching band is made up of 79 talented student members, including 50 woodwinds and brass musicians, 14 percussion instrumentalists and 15 color guard performers. The band is led by junior drum major Grace Myers; junior woodwinds captain Lucy Taylor; senior brass captain Sara Trovinger; senior percussion captain Cian Smith; and color guard captains Liz Roberts, a senior, and Addison Beeger, a sophomore.

“(The members of the

band are) the best,” said Tenaglia. “They have a passion for music. They have a passion for the arts. They want to learn something new. They want to be involved with extracurricular activities. We have kids who have high academic standards. They all come together, and it’s cool.”

“The environment we’ve built is very crucial to the success of our band,” said Grace. “Since we’ve been able to establish a strong, well-rounded group, we are able to accomplish a lot, while also being able to maintain high energy and a great environment to be around.”

The Warriors’ seven-minute field show is titled “A Night in the Cathedral.” The theme of the show features gargoyles and includes a frightful first movement, a peaceful middle movement and a joyful climax.

“The music is very difficult,” said Tenaglia. “It’s been fun to learn. It’s just a beautiful piece of music that (the band members) all seem to enjoy playing.

Each section is featured throughout the show.”

“My favorite part of band is seeing people finding their own unique roles in this group,” said Lucy, “and becoming more passionate about the show we are putting together.”

In preparation for the fall season, the Warwick marching band conducted music and marching rehearsals in June and staged an intensive band camp during the first three weeks of August.

“I think band is really important,” said Tenaglia. “Band is one of those extracurricular activities where everyone matters on the field. In band, there’s no bench. Everyone in band has to carry the weight of the person next to them. It hurts us when people aren’t here. These kids go on to be student leaders. Some kids really come out of their shells. It helps them grow mentally and physically.”

“Members put in work, both outside of the band and at rehearsal, to put the best possible show on the field,” said Cian.

Historic Rock Ford Receives Grant

The Rock Ford Foundation has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation’s John J. Snyder, Jr. Fund for Historic Preservation. This grant is part of a total of $317,200 awarded in 2025 to support the efforts of 18 community initiatives dedicated to preserving Lancaster County’s heritage. The funding will support continued exterior maintenance and painting at Historic Rock Ford, the circa 1794 home of General

Edward Hand. The preservation efforts will help to ensure that the historic site remains a valuable educational and cultural resource.

Since 1924, the Lancaster County Community Foundation has worked to establish permanent funds to support the community by making grant investments to local organizations. Today, the foundation manages approximately $200 million in community assets that support Lancaster County every year.

Thrift Store

what we are, who we are. We need to give back. We need to not just think of ourselves.”

Located at 48 E. Main St., Lititz, Matthew 25 Thrift Shop sports the largest storefront downtown and is one of the anchors of the thriving business district. The shop, which transforms donations into funds for local nonprofits, recently celebrated its silver 25th anniversary.

Overseen by a seven-member board that meets once a month, Matthew 25 Thrift Shop is open for business Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We’re here, and we care about our community,” said Shertzer. “We know we need to help people in our community. Our donations and shoppers

are keeping us alive. Without them, we couldn’t do what we do in Lancaster County.”

Matthew 25 Thrift Shop sells new and gently used items donated by individuals, churches, civic organizations and even merchants that are going out of business. The store offers clothing, jewelry, handbags, shoes, household accessories, artwork, books, toys and seasonal items all at reasonable prices.

“I think we have to remember to be kind and greet people,” said Shertzer, a resident of Lititz. “Without our customers, we couldn’t give away the money we do. We’ve been blessed. If I find a good deal on things, I’ll buy them. But 95% of our items are donated. We have a lot of regulars who

donate all the time.”

Last year, Matthew 25 Thrift Shop realized $338,000 in profits after expenses and donated those proceeds to mainly local charities like community meal programs, food banks, ministries, Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity, the Lancaster County Council of Churches and various emergency funds. Since its inception in 2000, the store has grossed over $6 million in sales and donated a total of more than $4.13 million to nonprofits.

A list of the specific charities that Matthew 25 Thrift Shop donates to is regularly posted in the store.

The mission of Matthew 25 Thrift Shop is based on the acts of service Bible verse where Jesus implores

us to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, care for strangers, provide drink for the thirsty and visit the sick and imprisoned.

“The shop was started by Jack and Nancy Reece of East Petersburg,” said Shertzer. “When they started it, it was very basic. They didn’t get as many donations, but each year it evolved. When they retired, they told the board, and the board talked to me about taking it over. I’m so happy they created it. It’s a good need for the town. It’s changed over the years, and Lititz has changed over the years.”

“All these shops in town are special,” Shertzer said. “If people ask for a specific item and we don’t have it, we send them to other stores. We work together.”
