Farm Markets Go To Green (Phase)
Coin Auction Will Help Support MCC
By Ann Mead Ash
Because they provide food, farm markets were considered essential businesses when businesses were closed under COVID-19 restrictions, but that does not mean that the organizations were not affected by changes in shopping patterns in the economy that resulted from the shutdown. “The pandemic has changed the typical summer landscape for many, and that includes our local farmers and small businesses,” said Dani Decker, manager of communications for Lancaster’s Central Market Trust. Located at 23 N. Market St., Lancaster, the local icon remained open throughout the coronavirus pandemic. “We have been actively providing updates to the community online on what stands are open and any operational changes that have needed to happen,” reported Decker. Kristofer Bucher, manager of Harvest Lane Farm, 851 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, noted that the market stays open year round, but this spring he was pleased to find more customers than usual wanting to shop there. “I think the small format gave and continues to give a lot of people the confidence to shop (locally) during the pandemic,” said Bucher. The farm added an online store and offered both pickup and See Farm Markets pg 6

The Pennsylvania Relief Sale, which supports the work of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), is an institution in the state. Held yearly at the Pennsylvania Farm Show building in Harrisburg, the event has been known to feature close to 400 handcrafted quilts, wall hangings, and comforters, along with opportunities to shop for handmade items and gifts and to bid on unique items during the Country Auction, Silent Auction, and Children’s Auction. The event is also known for homemade food and family-friendly activities. This year, however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the auction was canceled. See Coin Auction pg 4
EPC Golf Outing To Aid Good Samaritan Services

When COVID-19 restrictions meant that Elizabeth Martin of Gap, a student in Janice Beitzel’s Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 deaf and hard of hearing class located at Warwick High School, was no longer being bused to Lititz from Pequea Valley School District each weekday, she grew a little bored. Although distance learning began in April, by the end of that month, Elizabeth was looking for more activity, specifically activity that allowed her to make a contribution. “I normally sew or crochet,” said Elizabeth. “Since (the virus) was happening, I thought I should help (in some way). I started making the regular masks.” Using her grandmother Betty Risser’s sewing machine, Elizabeth could turn out a two-layer cotton mask fairly quickly. “At the beginning, I made the regular masks, and I sold them from a table outside my house,” reported Elizabeth, whose mother, Sally, noted that those masks sold well. Then Beitzel shared that she was making masks with windows that allow for lip reading. “My See Making Masks pg 4
Now more than ever, thanks to jobs and wages lost while the stay-at-home order was in place, resources for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their homes are in demand. Thankfully, Good Samaritan Services (GSS), which serves individuals and families in Lancaster and Chester counties who have poverty-related needs, is prepared to help.
“We provide a wide spectrum of services that are customizable to each individual or family at whatever place they are at in their journey to stability,” said Shadoe Settle, GSS development and communications coordinator. “Our services are always expanding. Right now, we provide emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support services to men, women, and families in Lancaster and Chester counties. Serving men is a new ability in Lancaster County, and we are very excited about it.” Although the need for the services provided by GSS has increased, the organization has been able to keep the lives of its See EPC Golf Outing pg 2
