There’s More to LCFH Than Meets the Eye
BY JEFF FALK
The Lancaster County Food Hub (LCFH) is the possessor of one fine title. But perhaps the organization should be called the Lancaster County Food, Clothing and Shelter Hub.
Despite its formal name, LCFH concerns itself with three of the five basic human needs. And because those needs in Lancaster County are great, that makes the local nonprofit’s work even more important.
“We just haven’t changed our name yet,” said Paige McFarling, who’s been LCFH’s executive director for four years. “We’re getting there. I think it’s essential that we come up with a name that shows who we are and lets people know what we do.”
From a 27,000-square-foot renovated warehouse located at 812 N. Queen St., Lancaster, LCFH provides food, clothing and
shelter services for county families and individuals in need. Serving with faith and compassion, LCFH distributes its services without asking questions and with few limitations.

receive services. LCFH does ask that clients receive food no more than once a calendar month and clothing no more than once every two months.
“We envision a Lancaster County where everyone lives a life of stability and dignity,” said
McFarling. “We’re hoping to build relationships. Basic human needs are what it takes for us to survive. If I’m helping someone with food and clothing, I’m freeing them up for their rent payments. Rent eats first. And if they can make their rent, maybe they can go to the doctor.”
In 2024, more than 73,000 visitors received services from LCFH, about 56,000 of whom were food recipients. Many of those LCFH neighbors earn less than 180% of the federal poverty level, and about 60% of those who visit earn too much money to qualify for federal government subsidies.
“They’re individuals who cannot make ends meet,” said McFarling, a resident of Lititz. “We support hundreds of unsheltered neighbors each year. By and large, they’re Lancaster County residents, but we don’t turn away anyone who comes. We’re going to make sure you get what you

Leo - Leadership, Experience, Opportunity - stands for service. Leo means doing the right thing all the time.
Leo is a lion.
“It’s important to be a part of your community and give back to create change in your community,” said Jarrett Falduts, who’s a Bareville, Leola, Leacock Lion and the adviser for the recently formed Conestoga Valley Leo Club. “Just being a person who gives. It’s really just God’s work. You have to reach down and help
people out. The impact it creates for yourself and others is unlike anything else.”
It’s been a few months since Falduts; his son, Geno, a sophomore at Conestoga Valley (CV) High School; and his daughter, Sydney, a seventh-grader at CV’s Gerald G. Huesken Middle School, pooled their talents to form the Conestoga Valley Leo Club. The club is sponsored and supported by the Bareville, Leola, Leacock Lions Club, but it is not officially affiliated with the Conestoga Valley School District.

Philanthropy is universal and timeless. The act of giving back is not bound by race, ethnicity or color.
The Aastha Horizons Fund is managed and operated by a group made up of predominantly Lancaster County Indian-Asian Americans. Its mission is to help everyone in an attempt to make their home a better place to live.
“My favorite part is the philanthropy,” said Manjeet Kaur, one of the founders of the Aastha Horizons Fund and a resident of Manheim Township. “We’ve been given so much by Lancaster County, and now we want to give back. Everybody does it for different reasons. I saw my family and dad (give back). When you see enough of it, it feels like your duty.”
“Giving begins at home,” said Reema Parikha, an advisory group

member who resides in East Hempfield Township. “I feel like this fund is the gift that keeps on giving. It’s amazing to see how these funds are used.”
Overseen by an advisory group and conducted in association with the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF), the Aastha Horizons Fund is a giving circle that raises funds through donations and distributes them to Lancaster County nonprofits via a grant application process. The fund’s advisory group meets on a regular basis but does not operate from a brick-andmortar office.
Translated from Indian culture, Aastha means faith, belief, trust and hope for a better tomorrow.
vote on the applications.
Before a final approval is granted, the advisory group interviews officials of the nonprofits requesting the grants.
“We try to focus on organizations that are less heard of,” said Nishit Trivedi, a member of the advisory group who resides in West Hempfield Township.
“It’s not just the money,” said Rao Sankarmanchi, an advisory group member and a resident of West Hempfield Township. “We’re looking for people to partner with as volunteers. We want to help out in any way we can.”

Balepur was an LCCF board member when she had an idea that evolved into the Aastha Horizons Fund.

“Aastha is a very simple word,” said Kaur. “As humans, we can approach people who are looking at the dawn and give them a little bit of extra hope for a better tomorrow. It’s what we want to do. We want to make a difference. We want (the fund) to continue to grow.”
Aastha Horizons Fund’s grant process is initiated with advisory group members inviting local nonprofits to apply for grants. Once the grant applications are received, the advisory members meet as a group, discuss the nonprofits’ merits and needs and then
Typically, the Aastha Horizons Funds awards grants in the $2,500 range. In 2024, the fund awarded five grants to local nonprofits, and over the course of its three-year existence, the Aastha Horizons Funds has granted more than 10 awards, including ones to Power Packs, Lancaster-Lebanon IU13, the Turkish Philanthropy Funds, Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, Milagro House, Aaron’s Acres, Reach Out and Read of Lancaster County, Lancaster Science Factory and Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services.
“As we’re going through the grant process, the organizations are getting

The Conestoga Valley Leo Club conducts meetings online at 6 p.m. on the second Sunday of every month and engages in community-building altruistic activities, not unlike its parent organization. Included in the monthly meetings are guest speakers, leadership-building exercises and the development and planning of upcoming events.

“For me, as the adviser, I’m giving kids an opportunity to see things they may never have seen before in their lives,” said Jarrett. “It’s a
leadership development group for giving back to the community. I want to show kids how to work with the community. We want to motivate people to be philanthropists. This club is about giving back and getting things moving.”
The Conestoga Valley Leo Club is currently made up of 18 students ages 13 to 16 who attend school in the Conestoga Valley, Warwick and Lampeter-Strasburg districts. Many of them are friends of Geno and Sydney or close relatives.
“They’re like the top kids in their grades,” said Jarrett. “They’re athletes. They’re very involved. A lot have part-time jobs. They’re already very busy. But to take something else on means they want to be better people. They’re super kids who will probably go to college and end up making a difference in the world.”
“Being part of the Leo Club reminds me of how lucky I am,” said Jackson Poole, a sophomore at
to know us, and they’re sharing about us,” said Rakesh Popli, a member of the advisory group and a resident of West Lampeter Township. “In three years, I feel like we’ve accomplished some significant achievements.”
“I think the word is getting out (about the Aastha Horizons Fund’s work),” said founding member Deepa Balepur, who resides in West Hempfield Township.
Aastha Horizons Funds raises money through events and private donations, some of which originate from the members of the advisory group.
“It’s a giving circle,” said Trivedi. “We have resources coming in, and the funds are managed by the Lancaster County Community Foundation, and the grants are written by the community foundation. While the funds are sitting there, they are invested and managed properly.”
Near the end of 2021,

“I appreciate what I have, and it makes me want to help others.”
Among the events that the Conestoga Valley Leo Club has been involved with since its founding are a banquet celebrating Lions and Leo Club presidents at Yoder’s in New Holland; an Easter egg hunt for Arc of Lancaster clients at Leola Community Park; and a regular Bareville, Leola, Leacock Lions Club induction ceremony.
In addition to helping to build job résumés and providing valuable experience, volunteering can serve as a way for getting kids outside and off screens.
“It’s really up to the kids what they want to do,” said Jarrett. “We want to help out with Lions Club events. There are a lot of kids who don’t know what Lions Club is about. We just want them to get their hands dirty. We want them to see what Lions do. We want them to learn about things
“Deepa started the process,” said Kaur. “It was her vision, and she connected people. She called me to be part of the process. I was already involved with a similar organization, but we were mostly putting out fires. What Deepa told me is, ‘We’re trying to do it as continually funding.’ That really resonated with me.”
“I was exposed to the concept of collective giving at Lancaster County Community Foundation,” said Balepur. “It was very intriguing. As I started talking to people, there were others who wanted to be engaged as well. Everybody brings different levels of expertise. It started with ‘it sounds cool,’ but it can be better if we bring other people on board.”

that are already in place in the community.”
“They’re learning how to be leaders in their community,” added Jarrett. “They’re creating a better world for themselves and others.”
There are about six Leo Clubs currently operating throughout Lancaster County, many of which are affiliated with school districts.
“I’ve been a Lion for about 14 years now,” said Jarrett. “Just being part of the camaraderie associated with the Lions Club is awesome. I think helping out in the community is something everybody should be a part of. It’s good for you and other people.”
The Bareville, Leola, Leacock Lions Club meets at 6:15 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of every month at the War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola. For additional information, go to https://e-clubhouse.org/sites/ bareville_leola_leacock.

Church Posts Dog Wash Fundraiser

Faith United Methodist Church, 1290 Fruitville Pike, Lititz, will host its annual dog wash on Saturday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. Volunteers from the church will provide dog washing for a donation; no grooming will be provided.
The Duckey’s BBQ food truck will be on-site for the event.
The funds raised will help to support the ministries of the church.
The church hosted the dog wash for the first time in 2023, under the leadership of Leon Baume. The event has grown from 10 dogs to 44 dogs in 2024. Event organizers are hoping to meet, share some love with and bathe even more dogs this year. Reservations are not required.
Strawberry Social Planned
Old Zion Church, 187 Reifsnyder Road, Brickerville (Lititz), invites the public to its 47th annual Strawberry Social on Saturday, June 14, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.
June 14 is also Flag Day, so
the event will also celebrate the star-spangled banner, which was the United States flag at the time when the current Old Zion Church building was constructed in 1813.

Food will be served outside on the lawn overlooking the Brubaker Valley. The menu will consist of chicken corn soup along with local strawberries, attendees’ choice of cake or ice cream, and whipped cream. Guests are encouraged to bring folding chairs and blankets for seating and trays for their food.
Cash and checks will be accepted for payment. All proceeds will support the maintenance and preservation of Old Zion Church, the cemetery, and church grounds.
During the social, visitors may take time to visit the cemetery, which dates before the Revolutionary War, or learn about the history of the church and church building from the Old Zion Church board members. Also on display will be the scale model of the church that was recently donated by the High family.
Visit www.oldzionchurch.org for more information or directions. The Strawberry Social will be held rain or shine.

As in previous years, dogs will be washed by volunteers from the church.

“For people who are heavily subsidized by government funding, it’s getting worse,” said McFarling. “Those living in poverty are struggling. This long-term economic uncertainty is leading to desperate times for our clients and neighbors.”
LCFH employs 10 staff members, some on a full-time basis and others on a part-time one, and its work is supported by more than 100 active volunteers. Much of the nonprofit’s
food and clothing are donated, and the organization is funded through grants and donations from community members, churches, foundations and corporations.
“I get to live my values every day,” said McFarling. “I put great value in the idea that we can all stand in the community and be better. We can try to make things better for each other and we can do that lovingly, mercifully and with humility.”
LCFH was originally established in 1947 as the Lancaster County Council of Churches. The organization moved to its current location in 2014, and then, through a strategic planning inititative, was renamed in 2019.
“It started as a collection of churches that wanted to do a number of things,” said McFarling. “They thought they could do more
from pg 1
in the community together than alone. There were all denominations involved. Their first undertaking was the clothing bank, and out of that grew the food bank, and they started providing other services as well. As the council grew, they were relied upon by the community to be responsive. Food and clothing were always a need, and shelter. Over the years, the basic commitment to human needs
has remained.”
“Over the last couple of years, we’ve worked very hard to get the name out and let people know who we are and what we do,” McFarling continued. “We’re probably (still) in the process of letting people know what they’ll find here when they come.”
