Through getaways, PA Family Travel Fair brings people together

Sometimes we try too hard. Sometimes we overthink things. Sometimes the answer is right in front of us.

The PA Family Travel Fair has a unique way of simplifying things. The lively event focuses on recreation, on Pennsylvania, on family.

“Recreation is so important to your well-being,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair and editor of Where & When Pennsylvania. “It’s crucial to your health to check out of your job. It can just be a long weekend. But it’s time with kids too. It’s important for families to spend time together. It’s important to get away and make

those memories. You only get 18 summers with your kids.”

The sixth edition of the annual PA Family Travel Fair, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will be presented on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a new location, John Bonfield Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz. The event is free to attend.

“It’s important for families to spend time together. It’s important to get away and make those memories.”

“There’s nothing else like this in the state of Pennsylvania,” said Royal. “We call it a travel fair because it’s fun and informative.

I’m amazed by how little people know about things to do in Pennsylvania. I’ve had so many people say to me, ‘Why doesn’t the state do this?’ The state of Pennsylvania tourism office’s job is to bring people in. Our goal with the

Lititz Area, Warwick Alumni and Friends isn’t the same community choir it was when it formed.

“(The singers) have grown and sharpened their skills, and we’ve had a lot of experiences along the way,” said Debbie KlineSmith, the ensemble’s choral director. “The final goal is a fine performance. It’s very cool to know that they care enough to want to be a part of that. That’s why they became members.”

The local community choir’s

The evolution of the local community choir continues, and those progressions will be fully displayed at its upcoming concert. Through a dogged pursuit of perfection, the Lititz Area Community Choir, Warwick Alumni and Friends has settled for excellence.

If the performing arts imitate life, then all the world’s a stage.

Many of the challenges that Lititz Christian School (LCS) is facing in presenting its musical version of “Little Women” can be relatable in the real world. In some very meaningful ways, the performance is preparing LCS student actresses and actors for life beyond school.

“Theater is so important to try, at least once,” said director Jenn Balmer. “It’s challenging (the students) in so many ways. They’re doing so many things at once in their brains. You’re using your body, your facial expressions and your voice to express how you’re feeling. It takes hard work. You’re working to portray the story and you’re also working with your co-actors. There’s also a public speaking aspect to it. There

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, Scouting groups, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. More than 40 exhibitors will be represented at the PA Family Travel Fair, including visitor’s bureaus, museums, state parks, amusement parks, historical sites and Keystone State destinations. “We cater to our exhibitors,” said Royal. “They’re handing out free information. The cool thing is you get to talk to someone. You get first-hand knowledge and advice from someone who knows. When you’re there, it’s a lot of fun because we involve the kids.”

The PA Family Travel Fair was started in 2018 as a way to meet a need for affordable family vacations. Since then, the need for recreation or for family togetherness hasn’t changed. In fact, if anything, it has grown stronger.

In addition to substantial giveaway drawings from exhibitors, Where & When Pennsylvania will be giving away a Potter-Tioga get -

“Way too many of us are leaving vacation days on the table at the end of the year,” said Royal. “(Family vacations are) a time when we can connect. We encourage families to spend time together and disconnect from technology. There are a lot of fun things to

do with the family, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Or you can make it a history trip.”

next performance, titled “Carry the Light,” will be presented on Sunday, April 28, at 7 p.m. at Warwick High School’s 1,400-seat Performing Arts Center, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz. The concert is free to attend, and a good will offering will be accepted.

“When we work together, we can be the light of our community,” said KlineSmith. “The concert is a celebration of the community. The choir sparks the inner light though the music they share with the audience, their friends, family and community. They are the beacons. Experiencing something beyond words can only come through music.”

The Lititz Area Community Choir’s “Carry the Light” concert is a compilation of 10 songs directly and indirectly related to light. The show will last about 70 minutes.

“These songs show guidance to all different kinds of things,” said Kline-Smith, who taught and directed

choir from pg 1

choral music at Warwick High School for 35 years.

“It’s about guiding people to the light and how the light affects us in different ways. It’s the common thread. Light can be many things, and we look to the light to find our way. We see the light as a positive. It’s amazing how music can light a fire that’s been out for a while. It can bring a hidden feeling out.”

Since its inception, the Lititz Area Community Choir, Warwick Alumni and Friends has grown in participation, scope and depth. “Carry the Light” will represent the fourth concert the community

choir has performed since forming in the autumn of 2022.

“It’s a result of hard work and dedication,” said KlineSmith. “We have some wonderful people who are very dedicated. The quality performances bring people back. They know they’re going to hear music they like, and the choir enjoys singing. I don’t think we’d have audiences that are so large if we weren’t improving. I don’t think we’d be playing to full houses. That’s what’s exciting to me. It kind of speaks for itself.”

From a modest beginning of 45 members, the

Lititz Area Community Choir now boasts 90 singers. The choir, a third of which is made up of Warwick High School alumni, has been forced to change concert venues twice to accommodate growing audiences.

“Where can you go for a free evening of entertainment?” said Kline-Smith. “There’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes. There are definitely challenges. I’m working with adults who have responsibilities and families. It’s a very diverse group. The common thread is they love to sing, and they love music.”

are so many opportunities for growth in the theater.”

Look for that growth to carry the performance when LCS stages the musical version of “Little Women” on Friday, April 26, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 27, at 7 p.m. at the Warwick Middle School auditorium, 401 Maple St., Lititz. Tickets are available at www.lititzchristian.net and also at the auditorium the nights of the shows.

“I want the students to feel that they are an important part of the story we are working on,” said Balmer. “I want them to feel valued and loved. I want them to come away with just a little more self-confidence. It’s so important for teens.”

Some 25 LCS students, grades five through 12, are involved in the production of “Little Women” - 20 cast members and five students helping behind the scenes as stage managers. Balmer is one of four adults overseeing the operations.

The cast includes senior Afton Urquhart as Jo March, junior Larisa Horst as Meg March, freshman Rebekah Lapp as Beth March, junior Sarah Smith as Amy March, sophomore Ella Urquhart as Marmee March and senior Carter Wighaman as Professor Bhaer.

“Theater is a chance to express myself, and I love how it tells stories,” said Afton. “The feeling you get from being on stage is a feeling you can’t get anywhere else - an otherworldly feeling. I feel like even before finding out that ‘Little Women’ was a musical, I felt I always related to Jo and loved her. I love her fieriness and the fact that she goes out and

chases her dreams. Playing her on stage inspires me to be myself and to chase my dreams.”

“While there are romantic interests in the play, the true love story is between the sisters,” said Balmer. “We talk about one of Jo’s quotes in ‘Little Women,’ ‘Sometimes when you dream your dream comes true.’ That’s what we’re going for. We’re dreaming big in a lot of ways. We’re putting this show on to bring the community together.”

Work on “Little Women” began in January with casting, and the students have been working hard for an hour or two every day over the last threeplus months. In the week leading up to the performances, the cast and crew will take their rehearsals to the Warwick Middle School stage.

“In that final week, there’s a lot of positive energy going around, a lot of excitement and definitely some nerves,” said Balmer. “When you build a community, you can lean on each other. It’s about working hard and working together so that nervous energy doesn’t overtake us. As a Christian school, there’s a lot of prayer going on. We talk about why we do this, and it’s to glorify the Lord.”

Presentation to focus on Thaddeus Stevens

LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, will host a new program, “Thaddeus Stevens and the Legacies of Reconstruction,” to spotlight a new collecting initiative as part of its Collections Up Close series. The program will take place on Saturday, April 20, with presentations at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thaddeus Stevens fought for civil rights and democracy in the 19th century, but his impact has been felt far beyond the three constitutional amendments that he helped pass during the Reconstruction Era.

LancasterHistory’s Mabel Rosenheck, director of education and exhibition planning, and Naomi Subotnick, research and curatorial assistant, will lead a guided tour of LancasterHistory’s latest exhibition, “Thieves & Vagabonds,” as well as a pop-up exhibit of new historic artifact acquisitions that together explore social movements from the 19th century to today.

The Collections Up

Close series, known for its conversational format, allows LancasterHistory staff members and visiting experts to showcase significant documents,

photographs, and artifacts from LancasterHistory’s collections. These sessions aim to uncover the stories behind these items and their contribution to understanding Lancaster County’s significant role in American history.

“Thaddeus Stevens and the Legacies of Reconstruction” is part of a new initiative by LancasterHistory to collect materials that tell the story of freedom, equality, and democracy in Lancaster and around the nation from America’s founding to today. The “Legacies of Reconstruction” collection will be held at LancasterHistory alongside 2 million other documents, photographs, books, and artifacts that help tell the stories that make up the diverse local

community. The project’s aim is to bring these stories into dialogue with people, organizations, and movements of national significance and foster conversations about the meaning of freedom and equality today.

LancasterHistory has begun the process of acquiring new materials related to this history. Among the recent acquisitions are an 1870 invitation to a ball celebrating the ratification of the 15th Amendment, a 1946 NAACP registration

form, and a 1980s “Disabled Americans Rally for Equality” button.

The event is free and open to the public, but it requires advance registration due to limited capacity. To reserve tickets, visit www.lancaster history.org/events/ or call 717-392-4633.

Miss Lancaster County Scholarship Organization crowns 2024 winners

Every year, young women in Lancaster County have an opportunity to participate in the Miss Lancaster County Scholarship Pageant. On Feb. 3, six titleholders were crowned during the contest at Ephrata High School, qualifying them to advance to the Miss Pennsylvania and Miss Pennsylvania’s Teen Scholarship competitions in June. This year’s winning contestants

include Noelle Schneider of Quarryville, Julianna Billings of Peach Bottom, AmandaGrace Krier of Levittown, Kathryn Davis of Willow Street, Whitney Ridler of Manchester, and Maggie Roe of Lancaster. During the scholarship pageant, each contestant gave a unique performance and highlighted a community service project near to her heart. Schneider, who received the title of Miss Lancaster County, performed a harp arrangement that combined Han -

del’s “Passacaglia” and Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor” in a mashup of the classical and R&B genres. Schneider presented her service project, MAOSmiles: Delivering Hope to Hospitalized Children. Through Schneider’s initiative, gift bags containing greeting cards, craft kits, toys and books are delivered to children undergoing hospital treatment. Each bag also includes a QR code to a YouTube channel of Miss America titleholders reading their favorite children’s books. “Hospitalized children feel isolated and have increased anxiety in unfamiliar environments,” Schneider said. “(MAOSmiles) provides children with bags to craft the courage to face their hospital stay with joy.” Billings, who was crowned as this year’s Miss Red Rose City, presented a jazz-influenced dance routine to the song “Never Gonna Not Dance Again” by Pink. Billings said she chose this particular song due to how deeply its lyrics and title resonated with her; the 2023 Solanco High School graduate has been dancing for 15 years, and she currently works

as an assistant coach at Debbie School of Dance in Quarryville. “Dance has always been a big part of my life. I couldn’t imagine not dancing again,” added Billings. “This song perfectly captured the sport that I’ve given my life to.”

This

Billings also discussed her service initiative, Chiari Malformation Awareness, which she created to educate people on a rare condition she was diagnosed with in 2020. After her diagnosis, Billings said she had difficulty finding information about Chiari malformation, and few of her friends and family members had ever heard of it. Billings’ goal is to use her platform as Miss Red Rose City to raise awareness of the condition and share her personal experience with it. “It was shocking to me I got this big diagnosis but no one had even heard of it. I hope to educate people on the signs of Chiari, so people can find it before it’s too late,” Billings said. Krier, Ridler, Roe and Davis were awarded the titles of Miss Heart of Lancaster, Miss Red Rose City’s Teen, Miss Heart of Lancaster’s Teen and Miss Lancaster County’s Teen, respectively.

The scholarship contest is coordinated by the Miss Lancaster County Scholarship Organization. The program seeks to empower young women across the nation by providing them

with a platform to share their input on critical topics and hone various leadership skills as they compete for scholarship awards.

Museum restores iron lung

The Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum, 410 N. Lime St., Lancaster, has completed the restoration and preservation of its iron lung exhibit. The completion of this project marks a milestone in the museum’s dedication to preserving medical history for future generations.

Originally acquired by the museum in the 2000s, the iron lung has stood as a symbol of medical innovation and the fight against polio. Its historical significance, coupled with its intricate engineering, made it a focal point of interest for visitors and researchers alike. Over the

years, however, the iron lung began to show signs of wear and deterioration, prompting the museum’s preservation team to undertake the preservation process.

“Probably the best ice cream in the world.”

To us, the best means producing a truly authentic, premium product. We start with happy, healthy cows who live at our American Humane Certified™ dairy and focus on top-quality ingredients that result in superior taste you can savor. While you may be seeing more and more “frozen dairy desserts” on the shelf, we still offer REAL ice cream made with less air & higher milkfat for a creamy bite every time.

Try it for yourself and we think you’ll probably agree!
