Lititz Rec Schedules Parkinson’s Awareness Event By Ann Mead Ash
“My hope is we will continue to do this each time Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month (is observed),” said Erica Johnson, personal trainer and certified Rock Steady Boxing coach with the Lititz recCenter. Johnson is organizing the inaugural Parkinson’s Meet and Mingle at the rec center, 301 Maple St., Lititz, on Saturday, April 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. Johnson’s hope is to include experts and speakers, such as neurologists, speech therapists, and massage therapists, that specialize in working with Parkinson’s patients. David Lauver, who runs PWR! Moves, a fitness, rehab, and wellness program designed for patients with Parkinson’s disease, will be present, as will Johnson. Amy Pavlov, massage therapist, will speak
about how massage therapy can relax the muscles and help increase blood flow in patients with Parkinson’s. “There are lots of benefits (to massage therapy),” Pavlov said. Rock Steady Boxing classes, which are currently being held for the second year at the rec center, are based on a method that was developed when someone with Parkinson’s disease realized that boxing with a friend helped relieve his symptoms. In 2012, a training camp was launched to help spread word about the method. Johnson learned more about the story behind the method when she trained for her certification. She noted that Rock Steady may increase mobility and flexibility and lessen tremors. Both Lauver and Johnson will be running sample classes during the event. “We will both be present and doing See Meet And Mingle pg 4

WMS Students Win Grand Prize At Future City By Ann Mead Ash
“You never think you’re going to win,” said a thoughtful Lauren Matt recently. Lauren and her friend Grace Kegel thought it was so unlikely that they would triumph at the recent Future City competition, where they were presenters along with Xavier Flaiz, that they regularly teased each other about it. “Grace and I had a running joke that we would win and go to space camp,” said Lauren. “Then we ended up actually winning, and it was unbelievable.” The Warwick Middle School (WMS) team, which included the three students and a number of their peers, earned first place at the 27th annual Future
