For WRRC, active lifestyles lead to healthy habits

Officially charged with a specific task or duty, commissions have the power to bring organizations together, and ultimately people as well. The Warwick Regional Recreation Commission (WRRC) helps to put the unity in the Warwick community, all in the name of physical activity, health and future well-being.

“It’s not just for kids,” said Ron Stief, who’s been WRRC’s director for three years. “Outdoor recreation is a great experience. It relieves stress. You’re out breathing air. This area has a lot of cool opportunities for recreation.”

Headquartered inside the Lititz recCenter, 301 Maple St., Lititz, WRRC serves as a facilitator, an umbrella agency and a sort of a liaison between organizations and community members to promote and make recreational activities available to as many local residents as possible. WRRC works in conjunction with the Lititz recCenter, the Warwick School District, Warwick Township, Lititz Borough and Elizabeth Township, and each one of those entities supports the commission financially or with other services.

“The purpose of the Warwick Regional Recreation Commission is to bring partners together to provide recreation opportunities to the Warwick area,” said Stief. “It’s a great partnership. The key word in all of this is partnership.”

WRRC also partners with local independent youth organizations

to provide athletic programs in sports like soccer, lacrosse, basketball, baseball, softball, wrestling and field hockey. The sports programs are mainly designed for kids ages 5 through 12, but some include children as young as 3 and as old as 15.

WRRC is also involved with the Lititz recCenter’s free summer playground program, which is conducted for kids at four locations within the region.

In addition, WRRC helps

manage the local skatepark, a Lititz Borough project located at the Lititz recCenter that provides a niche type of recreation for kids.

“We’ll be that link between the townships and the school district for youth sports,” said Stief.

“Most of those groups are developmental for the high school sports teams. We’re developing future Warriors.”

Many of the recreational activities that WRRC helps facilitate are conducted at municipal facilities

Newcomers and Neighbors: After a while, it’s hard to tell the difference

Lancaster County is a warm, inviting and friendly place.

Newcomers and Neighbors of Lancaster aims to epitomize that welcoming spirit.

“It is a fabulous group of women,” said Sue Bolton, Newcomers and

Throughout its six decades, the social group has stayed true to its original assimilation mission of turning newcomers into neighbors. But Newcomers and Neighbors of Lancaster has evolved into so much more.

Of all the ways to make the world a better place, communication is among the most important. The deaf and hard of hearing live in a world where it can be difficult to communicate with many people.

Keystone Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (KDHHS) of Lancaster teaches sign language, an important tool in bridging that communication gap. Although learning sign language

seems even the least amount of knowledge can be beneficial to the deaf and hard of hearing.

“It would be great if everyone knew sign language,” said Kandy Reyes, who’s been KDHHS’ executive director for 24 years. “That way the deaf and hard of hearing would have the same opportunities as everyone else. It would be a great world. Deaf people can’t walk into a bank without a sign language interpreter.”

Located at 2270 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, KDHHS

language classes in the spring and one in the fall. The sign language classes are taught once a week for eight weeks, they are designed for entry-level learners and beginners and the class size is limited to 15 participants.

“Sign language is the way deaf individuals communicate,” said Reyes. “It’s the way they hear. It’s their language. If you’re a visual learner, you may be able to pick up sign language easier. American Sign Language is just like any other language.”

“Our classes are designed for fun,” Reyes continued. “They aren’t designed for people who want to be fluent in sign language. If you want to become a certified sign language interpreter, you could start with our program, but you would have to go into more intense programs like the ones taught in college.”

Shown to be more accurate than lip reading, sign language is based on certain hand gestures or motions. Each sign corresponds to a number, letter or word, and when those signs are put together, sentences and communication are formed.

“The first thing you’re going to do in that course is learn about deaf culture,” said Reyes. “The instructor is going to go into words, numbers and teaching you the alphabet. In Level One, you’re going to learn words, but it’s not going to qualify you to speak a whole sentence to a deaf person. So, when they’re signing back to you, are you going to understand them?

Probably not.”

“Signing could be done on one hand or two,” continued Reyes. “The alphabet you can do all on one hand, and numbers you can do all on one hand. With American Sign Language, you don’t use all the words. ... You’re getting to the point. In English, you’d say, ‘The tree is over there.’ In sign language, you’d say, ‘Tree there.’”

According to numbers from a recent census, nearly 80,000 Lancaster County residents have some sort of hearing loss.

“Sign language is the key to access,” said Reyes. “But you have to know what you know. If you don’t, you’re creating even bigger barriers. That’s the problem. We support anyone and encourage everyone who wants to learn sign language. A little bit is better than nothing in certain situations.”

“Deaf and hard-of-hearing people have a language,” added Reyes. “People shouldn’t minimize that, and they should respect the deaf and hard-of-hearing people and ask them how they want to communicate. The majority are going to say, ‘I need an American Sign Language interpreter.’”

KDHHS executive director Kandy Reyes signs the word “communication.”

Neighbors of Lancaster’s president. “I was divorced when I moved here, and when I first found the group, everyone came up to me and said hi. They’re very friendly. When people come to an activity or a session, it just gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling, so you want to join and participate in everything.”

Newcomers and Neighbors of Lancaster is limited to only women who are residents of Lancaster County. The group conducts regular lunch meetings on the second Wednesday of each month, usually at local restaurants, hotels or places like Bent Creek Country Club.

The general membership gatherings begin with social time at 11:30 a.m., followed by a short formal meeting; lunch; and then some sort of presentation, speech or discussion.

“The idea is to bring together newcomers to the county and people who have lived here for a while, sort of extend a neighborly helping hand,” said Bolton. “That’s really what the club is. We have members who have lived in Lancaster County for more than 30 years, and they’re the neighbors. We have people from all over who have moved to Lancaster County. It’s a way to develop a social life and meet people in the area.”

Newcomers and Neighbors’ membership numbers currently stand at 113. The members reside in all parts of Lancaster County, they originate from all walks of life, and they generally tend to be older.

Some are retired, some are grandmothers, some are widowed, some are housewives and some are stay-at-home mothers.

Bolton said that for some members, the group is a way to stay active.

“I can’t speak for everyone in the group,” said Bolton. “For me, it was a chance to meet people in the area and do things I like to do with like-minded people. I’ve met great people and made friends.”

Newcomers and Neighbors of Lancaster is an active group. Included in the club’s variety of activities are local and regional

WRRC

day trips; arts and crafts; a pair of book clubs; concerts; shopping; games like mahjong, Mexican train, Scrabble and cards; recipe exchanges; and dinner dates. A nonprofit, Newcomers and Neighbors also engages in volunteering, fundraising activities and community service projects.

“We’re not just fun and games. We’re also community-oriented,” said Bolton. “When newcomers see all the activities and get to meet all the people, the club sells itself. Some people just like one activity, so they join for the things they like to do. You don’t have to do everything; you can pick and choose. Everyone joins for a different reason. You make friends in the club, and you have spinoff groups. With some of the things we do, we allow spouses and partners to attend.”

Newcomers and Neighbors of Lancaster’s origins can be traced to 1968 and the Welcome Wagon of Lancaster East. The group, which is overseen by a board of directors, took on its current name in 1998.

“I want people to come join us,” said Bolton. “Just come to activities and see how much fun we are. We’re doing things for the community, and we have fun. When we get new members, we get new perspectives, and it opens us up to the possibility of new activities.”

like Rothsville Park, Elizabeth Township Municipal Park, Elizabeth Township Community Park, Warwick Township Municipal Park, Linear Park, New Street Park and Spruce Street Park. The parks are owned and maintained by the municipalities, but WRRC does assist with the renting of pavilions from March 1 to Oct. 31.

WRRC also helps promote and organize activities on the Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail, which traverses five municipalities.

“We use the parks,” said Stief. “They’re not built just for us.”

While most of the programs that WRRC helps support are geared toward kids, Stief will direct adults with interest in recreation activities like pickleball, fitness and bus trips to the Lititz recCenter, where he also serves as a program director.

“(The position of WRRC director) ducktails nicely with my program job at the rec center,” said Stief.

“For me, it’s a great fit. I’m all about kids getting opportunities to get out and play. We want to get kids outside as much as we can. We want them in the fresh air and having fun. It’s a healthier alternative. If we can get kids an opportunity to play multiple sports, I think we’re doing a service to the community. That’s what motivates me.”

More than 20 years ago, Warwick Township official Dan Zimmerman was instrumental in founding the WRRC. But it’s been the commitments of the cooperating organizations that have helped the commission evolve.

“It’s grown because the community has grown significantly,” said Stief. “Its mission and responsibilities have grown with it. There are more opportunities for kids now.”
