Frank Gentile runs for his own fitness, recreation and mental health. But he also runs for others, people who can’t run themselves, like his father.
“When you think of having a father who died when he was 46, you start to feel shortchanged,” said Gentile. “If I can help give someone an extra 10 years and give them a chance to see their grandchildren being born or their children get married or their children graduate from college, it’s very personal to me. I think it’s just part of who I am, and I think running has helped with that transformation.”
Gentile, a 59-year-old resident of Lititz, is currently preparing to participate in the running of the 130th annual Boston Marathon on Monday, April 20. His preparations for the race include raising money as a charity runner for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and logging hundreds of miles and hours of training.
He’s motivated by intestinal fortitude, something nurtured by his father, who passed away 41 years ago in Michigan following a three-year battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
“When I got to the age of 46, I thought it was incredibly young,” said Gentile. “I wanted to prevent

With a tagline of “always pushing the boundaries of what theater can be,” Creative Works of Lancaster champions the power of performance.
“We believe that theater can be a powerful force for goodbuilding community, sparking connections and cultivating joy and wonder - and we want people to know that there are many ways to experience theater that go beyond buying a ticket and sitting quietly in a dark building looking up at a proscenium stage,” said executive director Lydia Brubaker. “It can happen anywhere, be accessible and relatable for everyone.”
Creative Works of Lancaster became a nonprofit in 2010 after a few years of grassroots organizing with a group of creative people in Lancaster, Brubaker said. Original board members were Brubaker, Anne Kirby, Daniel Klotz, Jenn McMorris and the late Douglas Campbell.

Aaron’s Acres isn’t intentionally and deliberately expanding. But by responding to the needs of the community, Aaron’s Acres is growing organically.
One of its newer programs, Kindness Konnections, is taking a different approach to giving back to the same community that
Aaron’s Acres is already serving.
“I like the phrase ‘natural evolution,’” said Madison Heider, the program coordinator at Aaron’s Acres. “We’ve had discussions about how this program can continue to grow. There’s a need for it in the community. I think it’s a natural progression of Aaron’s Acres mission to support participants in our community.”

“The project started with plans for a community arts center, with creative co-working space, rehearsal and studio space, performance and gallery space and a cafe, but we switched gears when the economy collapsed and decided to be nomadic and create theatrical events in various spots around the city,” Brubaker shared.
The group’s mission is to nurture and promote creative opportunities throughout the community in order to provide “exquisite moments of surprise and delight in an ever-challenging world,” she said.

Creative Works of Lancaster performs three to six times a year.
“The whole city is our stage, and we’re always looking for new spots that inspire us or feel like the right place for a particular performance,” Brubaker stated. The group has performed in more traditional venues, such as Zoetropolis, West Art and the Green Room Theatre at Franklin & Marshall College, but it has also used space in restaurants, shops, schools, public parks, barns, churches, hotels, parking lots, cemeteries and more.
The organization’s mascot is named E.E. (for the Exquisite Explorer) and is always shape-shifting and changing outfits, representative of the nonprofit’s evolving works.
“We do original plays by local playwrights, sock puppet parodies of classic films, The 24-Hour Plays: Lancaster, site-specific performances designed for particular locations and traveling performances where the audience moves from one place to another,” Brubaker said.
Some past highlights have included inviting audiences to eat hot dogs and do camp activities with the troupe, setting willing audience members up on awkward dates for a Valentine’s Day performance and creating a theatrical
escape room set in an Antarctic research station.
“We just got done with a busy fall, celebrating our 15-year anniversary with the Net Gala, our send-up of the Met Gala, and premiering ‘Dead Inside,’ a new play by local playwright Gwen Tulin, and ‘Dye Hard: The Siege of Sockatomi Plaza,’ our latest sock puppet parody by playwright and former Creative Works board member Erich Goldstein,” Brubaker said. The group is taking a short break but is also busy planning its 2026 season, which will include a new sock puppet show for the Lancaster Fringe Festival in May.
To keep live theater accessible to everyone, Creative Works of Lancaster uses a “pay what you decide” ticketing model, letting audience members decide what the experience was worth to them or what they can afford after a show is over.
“We’re creating brand-new theater by artists in the community. There are so many talented, creative people in the area, and while there are many other great theaters that provide opportunities for people to work on established plays and musicals, we want to give people opportunities to collaborate on new work, take chances and bring their ideas to life,” Brubaker said.
Originally from Lancaster,

Brubaker has been involved in regional theater for two decades. She directed new plays in college and enjoys collaborating with playwrights, but she also participated in Odyssey of the Mind, a creativity and problem-solving competition for students, and put on puppet shows as a child. Creative Works of Lancaster provides an opportunity for Brubaker to maintain an active creative life and work with other creative people. She particularly relies on board chair Joanna Underhill, a longtime friend and theatrical collaborator, for keeping the organization thriving.
“She’s been active in the Lancaster performing arts scene since 1996, and she’s the one who first brought up the idea of doing ‘Sock Puppet Psycho,’ our very first sock puppet show,” Brubaker said.
Brubaker hopes audiences
will continue to support the nonprofit’s work, and she encourages newcomers to check out a performance.
“Expect the unexpected!” she said. “We know it can feel risky to see something new, but you can be assured that our goal is for you to have a good time and to be surprised and delighted by something you’re not going to see anywhere else. You’ll share an experience with other people in the community, knowing that a lot of hard work, creativity and heart went into making it happen.” To learn more about Creative Works of Lancaster, follow the organization on Facebook or Instagram or visit https://creativelancaster .org. There is also an opportunity on the website to make a tax-deductible donation to support the group’s projects and artists.

The Building Industry Association (BIA) of Lancaster County, celebrating its 70th year, officially installed its 2026 board of directors at the annual installation reception on Jan. 15. Located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, Aaron’s Acres serves and enriches the lives of children and young adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. A community service group, Kindness Konnections works with other local nonprofits to provide participants ages 22 to 40 opportunities to work in the community, explore new social skills in new settings and elevate confidence levels.
“Our group is getting together, and we’re giving back to the community,” said Heider. “It’s a way for our participants to get out there and do something meaningful. It’s a new expression of our programs. We reach out to organizations and go out and do some work.”
Aaron’s Acres offers its Kindness Konnections program twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Both sessions are eight weeks in length, and the group meets to perform tasks and work together on Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m.
The spring 2026 session of Kindness Konnections began on Feb. 2, and the fall session will commence on Monday, Oct. 5.
“We’re trying to create an inclusive experience,” said Heider. “We’re meeting at different locations and doing the work at (nonprofits’) locations. We’re open to any kind of work. But we’ve found that assembly-line-like work is the most successful.”
“Communications are absolutely a form of kindness,” added Heider. “Just giving back in any way is kindness. Personally, I think kindness is so important. It can change so many things in the world.”
At this point, participants in the Kindness Konnections program have engaged in work at Girls on the Run, the local Power Packs Project and Lafayette Fire Company. The workers have also cleaned at the North Museum of Nature and Science and the local Lives Changed By Christ (LCBC) and have assisted with a large mailing project for Servant Stage.
“We hope (participants) are getting some social skills and connecting with people,” said Heider. “Just completing a task can be super special. We’re hoping these experiences could lead to opportunities outside of our organization.
Exploring, Growing Together Discussion Forum will meet on Thursdays, Feb. 12 and 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the conference room at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz.
The group will discuss “Even If Everything Ends” by Jens Liljestrand. The novel follows four characters who struggle to survive in a burning world facing a climate crisis. Even as the crisis escalates, life carries on as usual with teenage love stories, marital collapses, identity crises, and revolts against parents.
Attendees may bring a lunch to eat during the discussion, if desired. The forum discussion series offers a safe learning environment in which to discuss and explore diverse topics and beliefs with respect to everyone sharing. Each person obtains materials for the course unless specified otherwise in the information on the yearly schedule. The schedule is subject to change. Contact Linda at 717-626-0745 or raven303@ptd.net with questions or suggestions, to obtain a series schedule, or to indicate intent to attend.
Lititz Christian School (LC) invites families and prospective students to Discover LC, an open house event designed to showcase the mission and programs of the school. The event will take place on Thursday, Feb. 19, at 6 p.m. at the LC kindergarten though 12th grade campus, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. During Discover LC, families will have the opportunity to explore LC’s academic environment; meet teachers and staff members; and experience firsthand the community that supports students’ spiritual, academic and personal growth. Guests will enjoy guided tours of classrooms and facilities
Overall, being in different settings allows them to learn what other organizations do for others.”
An extension of an Aaron’s Acres’ summer camp program, Kindness Konnections was established in the fall of 2024 to serve the families of two individuals. Currently, eight participants ages 22 to 40 are enrolled in the program.
The participants reside in Manheim, Mount Joy, Elizabethtown, Jonestown, Berks County and Dauphin County.
“(The participants are) Aaron’s Acres’ heart,” said Heider. “They’re just looking for connections. They’re our friends. It’s generally just such a community who goes out with us.”
“To me, the best part is seeing participants reacting to their abilities,” added Heider, “and finding out what they can do and how much they can do. That and the connections they make. Just seeing what can be accomplished is my favorite part.”
The Kindness Konnections program maintains a 1-to-4 staff-to-participant ratio.
“Our numbers are always depen-
dent on staffing,” said Heider. “If our participants’ number would go higher than eight, we’d have to hire another staff member.”
As program director, Heider assumes the lead for the Kindness Konnections program. She is assisted by counselor Hayley Wilson.
“In this population, (a staff member’s role) is a lot more guidance and oversight,” said Heider. “We’re doing more modeling. We’re always there to support in that capacity. Our role is always just to be there. Most of the work is done entirely by the participants. They’re doing their job and we’re doing our job, and that’s what makes it complete.”
In addition to the Kindness Konnections initiative, Aaron’s Acres also sponsors summer camps for children and adults with disabilities; The Social Scene; the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League; a spring sports program; Dramability; and family classes that offer activities in fitness, art and cooking.

that from happening (to me). That’s what fuels me. (Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is) an incredibly debilitating disease. It brings tears to your eyes to see people in that condition. That’s my why.”
Gentile has already raised $10,000 toward his $25,000 goal for cancer research through the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge. Gentile has been soliciting donations from his large network of friends, family members and business associates, as well as conducting small fundraisers.
“I started running about 13 years ago,” said Gentile. “My son was asking for donations for a fundraising run. I was never a runner. When I did the race, I just about died. But I didn’t stop. I gradually built into 10Ks and half marathons. This will be my ninth marathon, and the competitiveness of me has helped me mentally. It’s become a way of life for me. Hopefully, I’ll always be able to run to stay fit. It’s a great sport, and you meet a lot of great people.”
Gentile’s training regimen for the upcoming Boston Marathon
has included speed training at Warwick Middle School and Lititz recCenter, hill training, endurance training on the Lititz-to-Ephrata Rail Trail and weight training.
“It’s 16 to 20 weeks of training for a race that, for me, will hopefully be lasting four hours,” said Gentile.
“It’s a lot of work for a relatively small 26 miles. With training, you have ups and downs. Sometimes you don’t feel like doing it. One of the things I like to do when I’m running is say hi to people. Lititz is just an incredible town.”
Gentile was a freshman at Michigan State University when his father was diagnosed with blood cancer. They were already close, but the shared ordeal made father and son even closer.
“He was a great man. He was a big supporter of the community,” said Gentile. “Back then, we didn’t know a lot about cancer. It probably took a year to figure out. He did all types of chemo, but (the cancer) was too far advanced. My father was a big guy and very hardy. I think about the man I am today because of what I went through.”
“I remember being there, helping him and consoling him,” added Gentile. “There was a point in time I wasn’t sure I’d make it through college. But I think I did because of that attitude of not giving up.”
Never has Gentile run the Boston Marathon, perhaps one of the most prestigious running races in the world. In April, when he does, he expects to encounter a flood of emotions.
“You never have a good night’s rest the night before a race, but you try to stick to your routine,” said Gentile. “As the anticipation grows, you have all this energy, but you can’t go out too fast. From mile 3 to the halfway point, you’re settling in. During the second half of the race, I start to pray and I think about the people I’m running for, like my father. Over the last 6 miles or so, it becomes about heart, and the emotions start. You think about all the people who helped you along the way. That all goes through your head.”
